I was REALLY excited to try this place out. I've been wanting to dine here for a long time. The Grove has a strong reputation along with its great location. I was very disappointed by the majority of the evening.. We ordered a bottle of a dry white wine that they recommended. I think something was wrong with the bottle because it took a server about 5-10 minutes to open - not kidding. She poured and walked away before we could tell her if we liked it. I get like 95% of the time your guests are happy with the wine. This wine was terrible!! I have never wanted to send a bottle back, but this was so bad. We all had one sip. Eventually we were able to flag down our waiter, tell him our story, and ask for another bottle. He told us there was something wrong with our taste pallets because this is an amazing dry wine, but he will find something else. Yes - that really really happened. Ordering took forever. Getting water in June took forever. We were constantly having to flag him down. By the end of the night, we were going to the bar to order drinks. The gentleman behind the bar was gave us a complimentary drink which was nice. My friend ordered the crab Mac and cheese which was so good! But she wasn't half way done and they just took it! First of all, l love a good place with a lot of windows and a view. This place had it and for that the third star. We walked in and we were greeted by a very pleasant hostess. We didn't have a reservation but she said we could still be seated. That was great. We were brought to a tiny two-top behave a large party with more kids than adults and a lot of mimosas. Needless to say it was loud and took away from the lovely view on the other side of the window. We asked for a different table and were moved. (Note: I love kids -and mimosas but not together). Not knowing that it was just a full-on brunch, but already being sat, we decided to just stay. The brunch was far from the best but did include a lot of options. There was a carving station, that included fish and shrimp. An omelette station, the traditional pancakes, French toast, potatoes and meats. Hot dishes have a Texas flare. My biggest disappointment wasn't the of vegetarian options (there was salad and fruit), but what I thought I was getting with the local vegetables wasn't just vegetables as it was labeled. Talking to the 'carving chef' I found out that there is rotisserie chicken dripping in the Veggies. This is wrong on so many levels since it wasn't tagged as such. It took 15 minutes just to get water delivered to the table. And since were we not drinking the mimosas that was extreme. We were never asked if we wanted coffee, tea, etc either. And considering the brunch was 'self service' it was a bit of a surprise to see an automatic gratuity added to a check for our table of 2. I don't get it. You charge $35 for food (unknowing of the price because there is no menu or mention of it, Or what it even included) but then to add a tip on my behalf, not cool. Although I usually tip 20-25% based on service The restaurant is lovely to look at if you can overlook the poor service and the worn down bathrooms. Buyer beware on the Sunday brunch. read more

Cute little place near discovery green. Nice decor Wall to ceiling windows allowing you to see people walking by and enjoying the park and the activities. Valet parking and street parking available. I went there for brunch and for only $20 pp you can get a three course brunch, you choose I appetizer and entree and a dessert. I had the deviled eggs, brisket eggs Benedict and the brown sugar pound cake. Everything was good with the exception of the desert. It tasted strange and had a gritty texture. We came to the grove on a Saturday afternoon for my cousins birthday. She came all the way from Dallas and chose the grove as the place to host her birthday. From the start the service was just absolutely awful. The "host" in the fancy suit took it upon himself to take her balloons from her because he said they "weren't allowed" in the restaurant. He continued to give us attitude and belittled us to the point where we eventually made a decision to relocate all 11 of us to a different venue. The way that we were being treated here was just absolutely disheartening. The menu was limited and didn't have anything that appeared too appealing especially for the price. Overall I am glad that we chose to leave and spend our money elsewhere. read more

TLDR; started off with problems and ended on a good note. Would try again. We arrived about 15 minutes late because of traffic from the Woodlands; we notified the restaurant that we would be late and they said that was fine. We showed up and they said that they had no tables in the main dining and they gave us this table that wasn't typical place for eating but rather for sitting while waiting for a table. I wasn't too pleased. The manager came over to apologize and offered complimentary appetizers. He made sure we had fast service as we had a concert to attend at the Toyota center and made up for the initial bad experience. Will have to try again when we have more time. The salmon was delicious! My wife thought the petite filet and it was good, but not great. Lastly, it was very loud inside, so if that bothers you, I would find somewhere else or eat outside. read more

I really like the location and the view from The Grove. You have a nice view of Discovery Green, and depending on what is going on there and at the convention center, the people watching can also be great. I went there last weekend for the second time. The first time was after an all day fiasco at Discovery Green with the kids, so everyone was tired, hungry and grumpy, and noone had any fun. So I didn't think it would be fair to review them then. But last weekend, I got to look around and actually enjoy myself. The ambiance was really nice, the server friendly and attentive, the food was delicious and the drinks were tasty. We ordered a gnocchi appetizer that was just phenomenal. I can't even begin to describe how delicious it was. It had kale and pecans and some kind of a honey topping. I'm drooling just thinking about it now. For my main entree I had the shrimp and grits. They were also good. Not fantastic, but certainly nothing I would avoid in the future. They had a nice cocktail menu, and though I can't remember which one I ordered, I remember enjoying it. Dessert was also fantastic. We ordered beignets with some sort of a nutella dipping sauce. It may surprise some of you to discover that I had attended law school. Yes, at one point, I was at the University of Houston Law Center...facing down the interrogation of the Socratic method in Civil Procedure, arguing the merits of hallowed cases in Constitutional Law, and mentally tackling torts on a daily basis. I was even pretty good at Legal Writing, which taught me how to boil down my writing to just the facts, and succinctly explain incredibly complex matters of law and fact in a few short paragraphs. As someone who cares more about Tom Ford's career trajectory than subject-matter jurisdiction, and as someone who can write a 5,000-character Yelp review on their experience at a gas station rather than try and explain 200 years of the Commerce Clause in a one-page memo, law school just wasn't for me. I had the grades and the opportunity, but it all seemed so boring and stifling. My personality just could not be constrained. Truth be told, I was also clandestinely and fervently attempting to find a husband who would do this boring, stifling work for a living and support me, which is (to me) the way God intended things to be. But since no one in my class was gay (seriously?), I had to cut my losses and move on. Never one to throw the baby out with the bathwater (that's an example of a crime and a tort, by the way. See? I still remember some things..), I kept in touch with a nice group of people from law school over the years. I admire their intelligence and success at passing the bar; I assume they admire me for my intelligence and success at experiencing, and then reviewing bars. Whatever the case, Facebook has kept us in contact, and after attending a wedding in Houston, I was invited to brunch at The Grove with some lovely ladies with whom I went to law school. Walking in, I immediately noticed I was standing in what felt like a glass house. Luckily, no one was throwing stones. Windows on all sides revealed the greenery of the park surrounding the restaurant. For lack of a better phrase, I thought it was pretty. And even before I knew they offered bottomless mimosas, I thought to myself: "I love this place." One by one my gal pals arrived. What was awesome was that: 1.) They all work at the same law firm; 2.) They all follow me on Facebook and find me hilarious; and 3.) Apparently, my presence at the brunch was highly anticipated. Kit put it best the day before when she came out and said: 'Nathan, you have a fan club." Since they were also privy to my compulsive Yelping habit, they wanted to put their best culinary foot forward and have me experience The Grove. It turned out to be an excellent decision. First off: bottomless mimosas. One mimosa is $8; unlimited mimosas are $11. What should one do? I know this sounds like an alcoholic wrote an SAT question, but the answer is: Everyone should order bottomless, because nobody wants just one mimosa. Nobody. I simply had to try the Smoked Salmon Crostinis w/ Local Cucumber & Herb Crème Fraiche, Red Onion, Dill & Capers. They were excellent, and make a perfect app to split, which we did. The smoked salmon was delicious. I've decided that an adequate tool for measuring a new brunch spot is to order their Eggs Benedict, and The Grove did not disappoint. The crispy pancetta, generous portion of jumbo lump crab, and creamy béarnaise really kicked it up a notch. Definitely a winner. I know I only had one choice, but if I were to ever come back, I have my eye on the fried egg BLT, or the steak sandwich with seasoned chips. My friend Natalie recommended the Sweet Potato and Cheese Empanadas with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Actually, she came out and said: "I know it *sounds* gross, but they taste amazing." And they did. They were warm and tasted like a fabulous doughnut, so don't be afraid to try something new. See? I'm adventurous like that. Say what you want about Facebook, but nothing else could have ever possibly made it so easy for me to continue a conversation I started with people I haven't seen in over six years. Sitting in the middle of the spacious dining area, we had a delightful conversation about the luxury handbag world, and what our mutual acquaintances were up to in lawyer land. My goal was also to be as amusing in person as I am online, and I think I achieved that. My driver arrived to take me back to the hotel, and so we parted ways. It was a solid brunch, and the ambiance could not be beat. Very few places outside Austin truly impress me, but The Grove goes on that list. I know we have so many places to brunch in Austin, but The Grove had a certain...je ne sais quoi. I definitely want to go back. OK, real quick with the lawyer quips: I find The Grove guilty of being fabulous. If anyone disagrees, I'd be the first to stand up and yell: "I object!". Ever heard of "Jewish Christmas?" Well, if you're familiar with this, we felt as if we experienced this on Superbowl Sunday. Traffic was light; restaurants were empty; and anyone with agoraphobia could be put at ease by stepping outside. We decided to dine at The Grove, since I've actually only been to Grove's for events, but I've never dined there. We walked in and were able to choose our table, so we chose one by the window overlooking Munro's Field of Lights. It was beautiful to see the lights changing while we had dinner. Their bread dish (which might as well be an appetizer) was so tasty with a variety of flavors. We were hungry, so went ahead and ordered our entrees. I had the Grilled Chicken Skewers and Sweet Corn Esquites with avocado, red chile salsa, crema, and radish. Since I cannot have pork, they were able to make the salsa without it for me! It was quite delicious, but be warned: the chicken to corn ratio is not equal. Corn definitely dominates the chicken - - not normal on a usual plate in Houston. My husband opted for some steak dish. He had no complaints. We ended our meal with a super creamy dessert, but I don't remember what it was named. It was a lovely and quiet evening. I Hope we'll be back, even though Munro's lights are no longer there. So, those of you who aren't into Superbowl things, this may be a good place to dine on that American Sunday. read more

I was recently in Houston for business and my visit to The Grove was among the better dining experiences I had during the trip. The menu offerings are relatively expensive, but given the generally low quantity and caliber of dining options in the downtown corridor, I'd gladly pay the additional cost for a reasonably well-executed meal. Food: The menu is predominately American Continental fare, with entree options ranging from hamburgers to lamb rib chops. The offerings aren't particularly imaginative, so this is an ideal place for individuals with less adventurous palates looking for an upscale dining experience. Unfortunately, my visit was only for drinks and dessert, so I didn't have the opportunity to try any of the dinner entrees. Nonetheless, the carrot cake that I had was impeccable on all fronts. Although it was touted on the menu as a "traditional carrot cake", it was more of a carrot loaf, which was topped with sweet carrot cream anglaise and accompanied by candied pecans. As for drinks, the wine menu is somewhat limited, but still comprehensive enough to please most casual diners. I opted for a glass of the August Kessler Riesling, which was slightly overpriced for the brand ($12), but still delicious. Service: I sat at the bar during my visit and found the service to be friendly, efficient, and professional. We were promptly greeted upon being seated and checked on repeatedly throughout the evening. Atmosphere: Upscale chic. The ceilings are quite high, so the acoustics are not ideal; however, I had no trouble carrying on a conversation at the bar with the restaurant at approximately 50% capacity. Dress is smart casual and the clientele mixed, but mostly young and middle aged adults. The restaurant is located directly on Discovery Green, so I'd recommend sitting on the outdoor patio if the weather is cooperative. Cost: Moderately expensive by most standards. Appetizers are $8-$15, salads are $7-$12, entrees are $15-$45, and desserts are $8.50. Sides are $6 each. Other: I've been told that The Grove is one of the more eco-friendly establishments in the Houston area. Aside from having its own second-floor herb garden, it also uses eco-friendly materials, recycles a large portion of its paper, plastic, and glass refuse, and maintains a compost pile from all unused produce. read more

I decided to try the Grove because I heard about the rooftop. I visited on a Friday evening and opted for outdoor dining when I was told the rooftop was only for private events. The service was good for a busy restaurant. The avocado flatbread was so light and went well with everything else we ordered. I had a mojito which was good, and a TX smoke paloma which was a bit stronger than I expected (the flavor, not the alcohol). My co-worker and I came here for dinner after a long day of conferences and events at the Hilton Americas. We were in dire need of a stiff drink and some non-hotel cuisine. The interior of the restaurant was pretty...clean lines and nice colors. I am probably going to catch heat for this, but where were the fabulous views that everyone is talking about? Our table overlooked a small grassy knoll that was surrounded by buildings. I was expecting something similar to The Boat House in Central Park. Maybe I am just a jaded Northeasterner, but I was not "wowed" in the least by the view. It was light out when we arrived and it was dark out when we left. I was underwhelmed by the views on both accounts. We split the lamb meatballs for our appetizer, along with a couple of salads. The meatballs were a little undercooked but the sauce they donned was delicious. I had the beet and goat cheese salad and my coworker had the ceaser salad. For our entrees, I had the short rib papparedelle and my coworker had some kind of grilled chicken on top of roasted vegetables. The portions were small. My entree arrived in a huge bowl and in the middle was a very small mound of pasta. My coworker's meal arrived on something that looked like an appetizer plate. Portions aside, our meals were tasty and everything was piping hot and fresh. Needless to say, we had room for dessert. We split the frozen caramel cappuccino. We were expecting ice cream, however, it was more of a frozen cappuccino mousse. It tasted like it was sitting in the fridge/freezer for a few days. All in all, it was an okay dining experience. We kind of forgot about it the day after. If I lived in the area, I probably wouldn't hurry back. I came here for lunch with my boyfriend, his bro, and his bro's gf on one of the hottest days yet. We had the option to sit outside, but indoors seemed like a more comfortable choice on this afternoon. It was a late lunch, so luckily the lunch crowd was just breaking up, and a wedding was beginning??? anyway... ATMOSPHERE Wood paneled ceilings, tones of green colored the walls, floor to ceiling windows brought in the light, an open floor plan made us feel free to roam, and the lacquered blue bricks lining the open kitchen kept the space feeling fresh and clean. SERVICE Was so-so. My waiter was confused when I asked for a Hendrick's and Tonic with a Cucumber and it took almost 15 minutes for a bottle of beer to arrive. He said, "what kind of vodka do you want??" That's not a good sign... For a $9 cocktail, my waiter better know that Hendrick's is gin. FOOD The menu fit on a page, but there were a decent variety of choices between apps (cheese & meat plates, ceviche, fried shrimp), salads (ceasar, cobbs, tuna nicoise), burgers + sandwiches (beef, shrimp, chicken), and entrees (big plates. nuff said). I ordered the irresistable burger topped with cheddar, avocado, bacon, anaheim chiles, onion, lettuce, and tomato (whoa). It was hand packed, sizable, cooked to order and juicy. It came with a healthy serving of hand cut fries. All this for $12. Overall, the menu was a bit on the pricy side, but I was intrigued enough by the menu to want to try it again, maybe even for dinner, or late night chillin. I came here for lunch since I work downtown and it was a beautiful day out to take a walk to Discovery Green. It was fairly empty when we arrived, but we usually eat lunch at 11am (we go off of NY schedule). I ended up ordering the JEFFERSON COUNTY RICE BOWL [v] [gf available]: marinated beef, fried egg, broccoli, baby bok choy, cranberries, peanuts, cilantro, Szechuan chile oil The chlie oil MADE this dish. It simply tasted like a tasty fried rice, but drizzling that chile oil over the rice combining with the oozing yolk from the fried egg really brought it all together. The price was a bit high, considering the portion size was pretty small. I was still a little hungry after, but after spending $20 on lunch didn't want to add anything else on that bill. Good quality ingredients you can really taste, just a bit on the pricey side for lunch. read more

I loved brunch and dinner at the Grove. It is a very modern restaurant surrounded by glass windows. The large trees outside make you feel as if you were dining in the Discovery Green. We had brunch and the BALT sandwich was a huge sandwich built on fresh bread and loaded with an egg, bacon and Avocado. It was tough to eat yet very tasty. Each dish is presented on a happy blue and white plate and the food does come out as a work of art. I also came back for dinner and had the chicken dish and it was fall-off-the bone fresh over colorful vegetables. The venue is very trendy and clean and staff was great. You can walk from the Hilton and that is why we came here a few times because of the proximity to the hotel. read more

I've been here several times and always had a good time. Some people seem to really take issue with the Grove, but I've never had a bad experience and for the price it's a pretty solid option. The interior design is pretty unique to this area of Houston, and almost seems more like a lounge then restaurant, but kudos for them to going out on a limb, it's certainly not the norm. Their bar is quite nice as well and I feel the drinks are typically pretty fairly poured. Never actually been here for lunch, but I'd suggest it for either brunch or dinner! read more

I really enjoy The Grove, and I've now come here twice - both times with my same Houstonian friend, who seems to really enjoy the place. Yes, it is pricey by Houston standards (and it does remind me of a place you'd find in NYC or SF), but I still enjoy it. Frankly, it's refreshing to have a place with fresh, interesting cuisine and a fun ambiance. No, it is not a rowdy Texas-style place, but there's plenty to choose from elsewhere if that's what you're seeking. And no, it's not a trendy 20-something party place, but did you really expect to find such a venue in downtown Houston? If you're looking for that, I would think you should venture to Midtown. As for rating The Grove, and focusing on what it is: - I've enjoyed the cocktails, and the wine list is great - Both times we've had the ceviche with dried plantains and tropical fruit, and I've loved it both times - Tonight we had the quail skewers with a pineapple BBQ-style sauce, and it was superb - We also tried the picnic appetizer, with yummy meats and cheeses - And the arugula and fig salad was delicious We had great service, and my water glass was never less than half full. Our dishes were also removed promptly upon completion, and I couldn't rave more about the service. I, honestly, don't see anything here to complain about. I think the critics of The Grove are just a little upset about it's somewhat pretentious ambiance. The Grove has become the place that Fiancé and I take out-of-town family members for a nice sit-down dinner: it has a nice ambience and view of Discovery Green, it's right downtown, and so far has had consistently good food and service. I'm a fan of the chicken (it's simple, but juicy and so tasty!) and the blue crab Mac and cheese. Fiancée and I like to have a little gelato or sorbetto to cap off the meal (the coconut and the pomegranate ginger are my favorite). The only entree I've had that I did not love was the shrimp and grits. It wasn't bad, but I've just had other versions I've enjoyed more. After dinner, it's nice to be able to walk around the green and take in downtown Houston. read more

I had the pulled pork eggs benedict, and it was really amazing. The bloody mary was tasy, but chunkier/more peppery than I prefer. The three vegan 'ice cream' dessert was beautiful and unique, but too rich for me to eat it all - I wish I had shared it with someone else! Be prepared to fork over a good bit of money - this is a nice place with good quality ingredients and a cute location, so it all costs more. There is street parking (free on sundays) available on surrounding streets, and Valet Parking if you prefer. Eating outside on the deck is awesome in good weather, although you will experience all the sights and sounds that come with being in the middle of a public downtown park! read more

I came here for a birthday dinner and ordered the salmon fillet that originally came with kale & cauliflower topped with spinach & onions. However, I was able to switch out the kale & cauliflower for a side of loaded mashed potatoes instead. The salmon was cooked well-done, honestly a little too dry for me, but the flavor was good. The skin was extra crispy & that was delicious! I absolutely loved the loaded mashed potatoes - very smooth & creamy with just the right amount of butter and toppings. My date ordered the pork belly. He thoroughly enjoyed it. It was juicy and flavorful with a little crisp on the outside. Personally, I thought the serving was too small. All in all, the setting was very nice and fancy. We went for an anniversary dinner. The service was good, vibe was chill after things settled down (it was the night of a Lizzo concert!) and we liked it. We didn't know Lizzo was performing that night so once people started leaving for the show, the noise went down to a more comfortable level. I'm hard of hearing so we had to just read lips for a little bit at first. For the price, it's okay. Not the best NY strip but we did love the mocktails (we don't drink but there was a big wine list). The valet/parking situation was better than most. read more

I went for a friends birthday the atmosphere was beautiful and perfect for a dinner party. We ordered three apps the queso, guac, and best hummus. The queso and guac were delicious and you can't stop eating it. I love hummus, but beef hummus just wasn't for me it had a weird bland taste and even the jalapeños it came with didn't help me pass the flavor. I ordered the crab mac and cheese and it tasted like a crab cake with mac and cheese in the best sense. However, it didn't have enough crab, so that was a bit disappointing. Fine dining meets Downtown park scene. Great spot for after work downtown suites to meet for dinner. Great food combinations with a beautiful view. Ahi tuna appetizer was a crisp refreshing dish. Think a bite size piece of ahi served on a thin slice of crisp pear with finely chopped radish and clover. Picked gulf shrimp comes as a pickled jar of carrots, shrimp, and fennel with four slices of Baguette, spread thin with a layer of avocado. Sounds like a peculiar combination but the layer of avocado spread makes for a "barrier" so the delicious pickled oils don't soak and run through the bread. Great professional yet modernly relaxed pick for an afterwork meal or meeting place. read more

Nice place. Nate was our server, he was lovely. My husband had the burger and fries and I had the crab and shrimp bisque soup. The food was good. We started with the guacamole with chips which was excellent. It would have been a perfect rating if we didn't feel rushed by the hostess. She asked if we could leave by 7:30. This was our first experience here, so it would have been nice if we were not on a time limit. read more

At first the Grove seems a little trendy (it is), you think the decor is a bit too 90's modern (that's right too), so you expect the food to be mediocre and over price (that's where you're wrong). To be honest, this wasn't my first choice and having stayed at the Hilton Americas many times before, had never dined here (right across the street). I was very surprised as the food and service was better than I expected. The jalapeño meatball app was very good with BBQ sauce that wasn't too sweet. My Shrimp and Grits were delicious and the chorizo added a nice bite. The service, aside from trying to serve us someone else's meal shortly after we arrived, was attentive and welcoming. A quick walk from my hotel and a great view of the park made this a surprisingly good dinner. read more

We were staying in the Hilton across the street for the weekend and decided to pop in here for dinner. The hostess said there were no dining tables available because they were reserved, so I would definitely make a reservation next time. But we were able to seat ourselves at a small table near the bar. The staff was pretty friendly, and the decor was unique and interesting. They had quite a limited menu. We settled on the quesadilla, the crab Mac and cheese, and sharing a side of street corn. Everything was DELICIOUS. I would definitely recommend the street corn. I also had a white sangria, which was really good. My only thing about this place was the value- taste was great, but the portion sizes for the price were a bit disappointing. I went here for the Sundown event yesterday,it was cider night. Lovely terrase with limited seating. The event was well organized & cheap to go to (20$/person). The fees gives you access to 4 X 4oz flights of the specific beverage highlighted with food pairing. You can substitute for 2 glasses of wine from what I was told. Food is all you can eat. Live DJ spinning music was nice but a little loud. Friends who have been to the event weeks prior said that the food was the best so far. The staff were efficient so much so that when the event was over they wanted us out! If you were to stand up there was no guarantee that your chair would be there at your return. Happy hour is available from 4:00-7:00 at the bar & patio. The bar bites seem quite appetizing. I was told that the restaurant itself is overpriced by a few people. I would be more than happy to return for this event in the future. read more
