This revelation began almost 25 years ago in New York City, when three founding partners transformed their hot dog carts into a world renowned franchise! They saw a huge demand in authentic Halal food so they capitalized their market by catering to cab drivers in busy streets of New York. Luckily for you and I, we don't have to be at the Big Apple to get our hands on their infamous platter of gyro! I remembered when this establishment first embarked its ground in Southern California. I think all the foodies living within the area were patiently waiting for this gem to come into our neighborhood. When it had first opened its door to the public, their lines were incredible long, so if you wanted to grab something quick to eat, you'd probably would have easily passed up this offer. But after months of the hype dying down, a few buddies of mine finally got the courage and time to go check this place out. We waited for about 45 minutes in line, but as soon as we got inside the building, their set up is very similar to a Subway sandwich service style. You wait in line and talk to one of the employees to create your concoction. I couldn't decide what protein I wanted so I got them both to determine which was best. (I would HIGHLY advise you to ask them if you could sample your choice of proteins first because they sometimes overcook the meat. ESPECIALLY the chicken). They then proceeded by added in 1 scoop of shredded chicken and thinly sliced gyro on the bed of luscious red rice and chopped lettuce and diced tomatoes. After that, they asked me how much of the red/white sauce you would like my platter (their red sauce, is known to be their hot sauce, is not for the feint of stomachs, while their white sauce is their mayonnaise cream based sauce). I asked them to add in the normal amount so I could base of what it should actually taste like. After paying for the meal, we luckily found a table inside and started digging right in. After having waited in that long line, we surely did build up an appetite. I was told that you have to mix up everything in your platter, just like how you would mix a salad up so you get a taste of everything. My first taste of this dish was actually quite scrumptious. The white sauce played as a dressing so it provided that creamy and sweet flavor, while the gyro was nicely charred on the outside and savory on the inside. The chicken this time was moist and sweet and that small red line was the perfect heat that this dish needed. The crisp lettuce and juicy tomatoes added a refreshing component to the dish, so overall it was an awesome meal. Now if you were to ask me would I wait 45 minutes again in line for this? Probably not, but if there isn't a wait and I want something that's going to fill me up, then you might catch me here! read more

But today I wanted to use Yelp delivery since the other carriers didn't have my normal go-to THG available for delivery when I wanted it. Today I order your this store and was jibbed! I ordered a regular size combo with double combo meat for my coworker and I to split. The order came through with GrubHub delivery man which was perfect. Greeted me in my building lobby and I was on my way to sharing with my coworker and start enjoying lunch! When we opened it . We were like wtf? The serving rice and meats were enough for one person... this was their doubles meat combo ?! Dissatisfied with the way it looked I called the location. Twice and no answer? Waited 20 mins and wrote to them through Yelp and tried again to contact the location over the phone. Nothing. Horrible and I will never order delivery from here again. I've been coming to this location since they opened back when I was in law school. Having heard about the one in NY, I knew I had to check them out. Whenever I'm out in the OC, I always swing by The Halal Guys to grab food to bring home. The staff is always friendly and they always have fresh falafels for my falafel plate. Love the white sauce with one line of red sauce. We ate here yesterday and dined in. I discovered my husband is apparently a fire breather and can put 3 lines of red sauce on his food. Whew! Anyway if you're looking for a gyro/chicken combo plate or falafel sandwich, I definitely recommend here. I also love that their French fries are always piping hot. read more

This is one of the better locations for Halal Guys compared to some of the other ones I've been to. Came in for lunch on a weekday, but thankfully got to order/eat before the huge work lunch rush came through! Got the small beef gyro plate which included the meat on top of rice, lettuce, tomato, along with some pita bread, olives ($1 extra apparently?)...and of course, allllll the white sauce. Seriously the white sauce is so good! They even sell it by itself which I saw as large bags in their fridge. Word of caution with the red sauce - it's super hot so I'd suggest if you're sensitive to heat just add little drops of it into your food to try it out first. For this particular location: the service was friendly, they cleaned the tables up quickly, and the portion sizes they served were great. we decided halal guys the night before. i was looking up salad places and then i said halal and got reminded about halal guys. omg when i thought about it i was craving it the whole rest of the night. so i couldn't wait till tmr morning after we rock climbed to get it. we rock climbed but i don't remember if i did anything interesting like climb a new route but i probably just sucked and did worse and worse while the flappers on my hand got worse and worse. we got to the halal guys pretty early and there was no line. i got a large plate and my friend got a regular. i got half chicken and half beef and i got a six piece falafel. but they forgot to add my six piece falafel so i had to add it after. my LUNCH ended up being over $20 which is crazy for an unemployed person. but it was good i can't be lying. i found out recently that nyc is the birthplace of halal guys which is interesting but i don't see myself going out of the way in nyc to eat that when there are a bazillion more places i could go and try. i love their food though don't get me wrong. 5 STARS read more

Why is the white sauce so addicting? To the point where I lay in bed and just think "hmm I should get Halal Guys for dinner tomorrow just because of that sauce". I am so happy the lines here are not miles long. This is the only location I've been too (other than the ones in NY) and it is always so clean! The staff is always so friendly and actually smile when they serve you. Don't bother paying for the sauce packets! Just ask for extra sauce and they are happy to add it for you. I was super excited about Halal Guys opening in OC, but was sadly very disappointed. I ordered the chicken platter, expecting flavorful juicy pieces of chicken. Instead, I got super dry pieces of chicken. The rice in the dish was also hard, and the lettuce had some wilted pieces. While I do understand that restaurants have off days sometimes, when 3 of the 4 components in a dish are subpar, that is inexcusable. By the time you sit at your table the fat in the food has already turned solid! I really appreciate the fact that they serve the food in aluminum plates which is definitely better and healthier than plastic, but I think the problem is the tables, they are freezing cold! This is our first visit to this branch... and it is the worst branch we have ever visited. 1. Combo platter meat was dry 2. Falafel was fried fresh BUT it tasted bad... would not recommend eating falafel from there... there are many much better places. 3. The quantity of protein in the combo platter was definitely less than any other place we have been to. 3. The server gave us half less than the standard portion of pita bread and we had to go back and ask for more. We are giving a 2 star just for the sake of the brand but certainly not this branch. I think the food is okay, but not remarkable. There are many other Mediterranean or Middle Eastern food places that make better tasting food. For the plates, you choose either beef gyro, chicken, falafel or combo as your meat on top of rice, lettuce and tomatoes. The white sauce is a must use condiment to flavor your plate. The red sauce has a bit of kick to it for those who like spicy. Without any of the sauces, the food wouldn't be very appealing to me. The portions are decent. We got charged extra for white sauce yet the people behind us did not. I was sitting by the cashier and saw him hand out sauce packets to at least 3 people without charging them. The $.60 not the issue, but it's the principle of the matter. If you want baklava look at it carefully. The boxes in front of the case all have 2 making you think 2 comes in a serving.
