    Chili fries

3.5 to 4 stars First time here at the Hat. We ordered pastrami dip sandwich and I split it with my husband. I couldn't finish my half, it was too much for me. It was not too salty. For Flavor, it was okay. We also ordered chili fries, it was humongous portion. The flavor was a little too heavy for me. How you order is to be in line and order and pay and wait to be called. Plenty of chairs and tables. During peak hours the line is long, luckily we came here at 9 pm, line was short. Noise level moderate. They constantly clean the tables and the floor. Plenty of parking.

Went last Monday after running an errand. Unfortunately that put me at the Hat smack dab in the middle of their lunch rush, around 12:30. I pull up and the drive-thru is insane, so I decided to park and go in. The line inside wasn't bad. I was 5th in line to order. After ordering, I waited ~10 min. for my sandwich. Overall, the entire process took ~15-20 min. The pastrami sandwich was good. Not great, but good. I shared it with my husband. It was filled with pastrami and tasted exactly like the last time I had it in L.A. (Pasadena to be exact). I was a Johnnie's Pastrami gal when I lived in L.A. and was introduced to the Hat by my now-husband. I thought it was a 4-star place back then and still consider it a 4-star place. But considering it's in Vegas now, more like a 4.5 star place.

Food was a bit bland. I expected the roast beef to hold its own on flavor, not have the au jus carry the meal. The hype was real but the taste didn't measure up for me. Granted, I've never been a fan of In and Out so the West Coast palette was never agreeable. My only comparison is to Manny's in Chicago and The Hat didn't even get on the map when comparing tastes. The only redeeming item on the menu was the pastrami French fries. I won't be going back. At the end of the day, I wasn't impressed.

    Pastrami melt- 4/5

Alright folks, I've been to the original HAT in Cali. Went once and never went back. So, where's the rundown for you. Avoid long lines by going hella early in the most random time at 5:00pm or later after 8pm. Don't even mess with that drive through, it's horrendous looking. Park and just line up or walk in. Pastrami melt- 4/5. Onion rings- 5/5. If you love onion rings, this is the real deal. Chilli fries- 1/5. Fries were meh. Chilli looked like doo doo and I half lost appetite with the look, color, and everything about it. I didn't get cheese on top, cuz it drives me nuts to see unmelted chunks of shredded cheddar cheese on any hot foods. I want my cheese melted, not look like I just topped it right out of the fridge. Flavor was just...0/5 basically not good at all. And I am a self-proclaimed chili connoisseur. Pastrami burger- 5/5. I don't know what it is, but it was exceptionally good. Id go back and get the onion rings, pastrami burger, and call it a day with some orange bang, it was my first time trying it and I liked it.

It's new to Vegas but tastes like home to my heart. Ordered my regular pastrami dip. Line was as long and dramatic as their grand opening. There was six of us, two children. It was a smooth time in line and order came out quickly. We found a table quickly. People were courteous and cleaned up after themselves. The staff did come around and do follow up cleanup when you did get a table. Atmosphere was just as though you would walk in to the Upland location or Pasadena all in all. It was a great day at the hat.

    Just like in California

I have been to The Hat many times in California and it was my mother's favorite and would make me bring it to her from California. She could not wait for this location to open in Las Vegas. Unfortunately she passed before it opened. On her birthday this year my family and I decided to give it a try to honor her. We ordered of course the Pastrami Dip, Onion Rings, Gravy Fries and Chili Cheese fries. I can only speak on what we ordered. The Gravy fries and Chili Cheese fries were good just like they are in Cali. Remember these are very large portions so make sure you share! I have never tried the onion rings before and they were amazing I will for sure order them again. The pastrami dip was a little dry and not as dipped as what we have experienced in the locations in Cali. This is my only reason for not giving them 5 stars!

Had to try out the new location. Went at prime lunch time. 12:30. On the dot. Line wasn't that long. Took a total of 22 minutes to order and walk out the door. Not to bad for a Sunday at lunch. Now the location has ton of parking and easy to get to. Nice new location so it all looks clean and new. The staff was friendly and easy to work with. Took a total of 22 minutes from time I walked in ordered and waited for my meal and walking out the door. As for the quality of the food. It's the same Hat I always remembered. And for the price of 14.00 for a huge sandwich. Hard to beat.

Another California childhood favorite. The Hat doesn't do fussy. It does flavorful. It's fast-food with a sense of pride, served by friendly staff who make sure your pastrami-to-bread ratio never dips into tragedy. Is it healthy? Absolutely not. Is it a religious experience between two slices of bread? Also yes. Come hungry. Leave happy.

An idea of what you can get.... but if it doesn't include pastrami... why are you here??

Finally got to try this SoCal staple a few weeks after their opening. While the drive thru was still insanity, walking in was a much more reasonable (maybe 15 mins) wait. This was one of my dad's faves, so as an homage to him, had to try it out and bring home (that said, there was a decently large dining room for people to eat in). Wasn't completely sure what to get and ended up with a few Pastrami Dips (which was 1 too many for 2 of us) and a Chili Cheese Fries. Pastrami dip was delicious.. not a whole lot to it, but honestly... there doesn't need to be! Amazingly, the leftovers were delicious the next day too, so if you're not sure if you need one more sandwich.. just get it and have it the next day. As for the fries.. like others on here, nothing earth shattering. Mind you had to bring them home, so the fries likely got a bit softer, but the chili was just okay. The amount of cheese was nice and absolutely necessary to change the flavor. Next time, I'd be going pastrami chili cheese fries (which I didn't see as a menu item until after paying) or fries and gravy (someone get them some cheese curds and these could be decent poutine. I will say that the fries tasted better reheated the next day... so either dine in and eat them fresh.. or maybe reheat them at home immediately?? Definitely want to try eating in one day, but I'll wait for the temps and lines to go down!

The three stars is for the pastrami only. It's been ages since I last had The Hat's pastrami dip. I got really excited when I found out they were finally opening in Vegas. We were driving through a few hours ago and saw the sign and thought to ourselves, why not get a pastrami dip? The place was busy as expected. The line in the drive through was to the moon. So we decided to try to dine in, maybe it would be quicker. It definitely was faster to dine in. The service could be better. Since it's probably been 2 years since we dined in Lake Forest, I couldn't really remember what came standard with the Pastrami Dip. I also thought it came standard with melted cheese. It would have been helpful if the cashier asked if I wanted cheese, but she didn't. All she asked was if I wanted mustard and pickles. When I got our order, my husband asked why his bread was not rye. The cashier never asked what bread we wanted. The fries were kinda dry and lacked salt. The onion rings were just meh... I guess we were expecting the same proactive approach as the CA staff, but I guess we need to lower our expectations as this is Vegas outside the strip after all, and not our South Orange County hometown. So, if you are missing a SoCal joint, the pastrami is still wonderful, flavor was probably dialed down a notch from what I remember but still great. Just don't expect the typical South Orange County service and polished crowd when you dine in the restaurant. I was a bit culture shocked when I visited. But honestly, now that I think about it, what can one really expect? I've been living in our tiny bubble for quite some time now, I forget how the real world is in Vegas outside the strip. So pardon me for being surprised. This would definitely be a drive-thru place for us, dining inside the restaurant will never be an option should we crave for a pastrami sandwich again.

    Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries

This classic spot lives up to its legendary reputation for massive food portions. While the counter line moves fast on a weekday evening, the kitchen takes a substantial amount of time to prep the food, though the sheer volume and flavor make it well worth the wait. Pastrami Dip (5/5): Their world-famous signature sandwich, and it's easy to see why. The sandwich is absolutely loaded to the brim with savory pastrami, and the flavor is elevated even further by the bread being dipped in rich au jus broth. It's a simple concept done exactly right and a hearty enough portion for two people to easily split. Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries (4/5): An absolutely massive and delicious mountain of food. For a table of six people, we ordered two fries, but a single order alone would have easily sufficed for the entire group. Every layer of fries, pastrami, and melted cheese is incredibly generous, though the chili itself felt a bit on the blander side and was missing a little extra savoriness. Still, it's a great, comforting option to share. Logistics Tip: While you can place your order at the counter quickly, be prepared for a long wait for your food to actually be called from the kitchen. Keep an ear out for the overhead intercoms, which the staff use to announce order numbers if they sit on the counter for too long.

    Hot pastrami sandwich

Had to find out (and experience) what all the "local" Vegas Californians kept talking about. After about a month of its opening, the lines were short enough to finally go in. I ordered the hot pastrami sandwich and their pastrami cheese french fries. First off both the sandwich and fries were huge, like bring three other people with you cuz you are not eating all that by yourself huge. The pastrami is really good, like I can just eat a bowl of pastrami and be happy. Over the sandwich is delicious, fries are good too but I'm not really a big fan of loaded fries.

Chili Cheese Dog - too messy to enjoy like a hotdog with your hands
    Rin M.

Finally got to try this and I must say that I can see why there are still long lines at this place. The thing to get here in my opinion is the pastrami chili cheese fries, with raw onions and the chilis. Best thing on the menu and worth standing in line 30 mins for. I also tried the chili dog, which tastes good but definitely too messy to enjoy eating it using your hands. If I have to eat a hotdog with a fork then that defeats the purpose. And the pastrami melt was good too - extra toasty (you might scrape your mouth) and buttery bread with a heaping amount of pastrami. Would come back for the fries and that's about it. Everything else I've had was just ok. Also don't sit in that long drive thru line. As of right now if you stand in line it's 30mins total time to get your food!

Ask the Community - The Hat

Is there a long wait for seating?

    15 to 20min

    Are they officially open now.?

No, I was at a store across the street on April 13, 2016 @ 1:30 pm and sign was lit, landscaping in but fence still up around property.

Is this the same kind of Pastrami you'd get in a Jewish Deli?

I don't believe so. It's a sub roll with thinly sliced pastrami with pickle and mustard. You can get it dipped or dry.

    Any new opening date set?

    May 6th - grand opening day :)

Is there an updated opening date?

I got an email on The Hat's mailing list stating the grand opening is May 6, 10:00 am - 1:00 am.

    Have they opened yet?

No, not yet. Still under construction.

Is the Las Vegas Location open?

I don't believe so. On their website they say they expect to open sometime this spring and spring isn't till the end of March so that means End of March or latter.
