While purchasing my coffee, I witnessed a mother and her approx. 2 year old son sitting at a table eating a bagel. While they were at the table the store employee walked up to the mother and asked her to leave the coffee shop because she didn't purchase the bagel from them. Really like the design of this place. It manages to feel both Intimate and open and welcoming at the same time. Good combination of colors. Got in to get my morning Latte. There were two displays that had croissants. In one it was wrapped in a seran wrap (No!) and in the other it was looking small and lonely so I opted for a pumpkin bread. A Lady next to me waiting for her order whispered they are really good. It was... OK. Not bad, but not memorable at any stretch. The label said it was made in Russells bakery and coffee bar. On to the main event: 12 oz Latte. Close. Very close. It had the right texture and temperature but it was weak. It was evident by the contrast of the foam design. There wasn't any (contrast) and the first sip of mostly hot milk confirmed it. It's possible that it was only 1 shot of espresso (though 12 oz should get 2 shots) so I'll give them another shot (pun intended) to see if it's on me or on them. Nice place. It saddens me that I have to write this review. I'm a regular and I come in almost every other day to buy some form of coffee or breakfast taco. Usually it's a good experience but on this particular night I was extremely upset about the way I was treated by the two baristas. I came in on a Saturday night (4/22) I ordered a pretty standard soy cappuccino. When it came out noticed it was extremely light... then I swirled straw in it and noticed it was 70% foam. I went to the bar to notify the two baristas that the cup hardly had any coffee or soy milk it and was mostly air. They said to me "honey I don't know what to tell you... this is how a cappuccino is made" "it's made with 70% foam" "I don't think we should explain to you how coffee is made" ... To that I will have to call BS! I've drank and made several good cups of cappuccino that isn't entirely whipped air. Do not insult my intelligence. If this is really the case than you need to make your cup 70% larger. Over the years me and my co workers have probably spent hundreds maybe thousands of dollars supporting this business but if this the BS they're trying to pull... This place is a rare mom and pop type coffee shop. It's rare for Downtown Austin, at least. Walking in, you feel like you are stepping back in time a bit, or perhaps just visiting somebody in a small town. The service is ok. The coffee is ok. The scone is ok. I was in Austin for a wedding and needed a pick me up before the festivities started. So, I walked to the nearest coffee shop, The Hideout. Upon entering, I asked the barista what her favorite coffee was and she gave a bland, "I don't have one" answer and closed down the conversation. I just ordered a cold brew with a sugar free syrup and cream. It was ok coffee with not so pleasant baristas. If going here, know exactly what you want to order and ask no questions. They seemed irritated by simple questions and attempts at small talk. As a side not, it was not busy (we were the only people there) or near closing time! I never got the bad customer service people here have been talking about, but my almond joy was very, very sweet. I don't think I can finish it entirely because of it. The ca phe sua da (Vietnamese coffee) isn't bad, but doesn't taste very accurate? So I didn't feel prepared for what I actually tasted. The music is pretty loud so it's not a good place to study or read, but maybe it's to drown out the loud stomping from the theatre (?) upstairs. I don't think it's a bad place. I like the music a lot. But I was a little overwhelmed with the sweetness and the noise level. Nice decor though! read more

The Hideout was near my hotel, right on Congress Street so I stopped in. It was a standard coffeeshop, some noise but nothing crazy. The staff was friendly and quick. Unfortunately, the coffee was only okay. There was not a ton of flavor to the coffee itself and it seemed a tad burnt. I cannot speak to any other trip there or their food. This is such a cute coffee shop with so many types of coffee. I secretly wish they had hot breakfast sandwiches, but they didn't, so I settled for a yogurt parfait instead. They do have lots of breakfast items like scones, bagels etc... I just really wanted a hot breakfast sandwich. Never been to the Hideout and I was excited to try the coffee. I ordered the raspberry riot and you're able to get any of the drinks hot or cold I love raspberry. I've been thinking about how I could do this place justice with some words on the internet...for DAYS...and I just can't. I mean, how do you properly communicate to someone the stream of tears you cried, doubled over laughing hysterically or the number of times your ass came up off of your seat in a fit of laughter?! I came across The Big Bash event listing a few weeks ago while looking for something interesting to do as part of my 30th birthday festivities. This seemed fitting. I had zero idea what to expect, but can I just say that any expectations I did have coming in here were blown out of the water in the first couple of acts. I've seriously never laughed so hard in my life. It's better than Whose Line is it Anyway, but the same idea...improv that encourages suggestions from the audience and even audience participation. That's right folks, I volunteered to "help out", but when they said I'd be doing sound effects for everything Roy did I about passed out. I don't do sound effects...and I definitely don't do them while I'm cracking up. I was in literal tears by the time I sat back down. I could not have been more impressed with this production or the people in it. Roy, one of the improvers, was also the person I was in contact with ahead of time, and he graciously reserved seats together for our party. So professional and you can tell these entertainers are totally invested in their craft. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been nearly as impressive. I'm already planning a return trip! read more

I am not an actress, nor comedienne, nor barista, nor starving artist (not yet, anyway). Despite my lack of experience in areas that might better suit to make an informed judgment of The Hideout Coffeehouse and Theater, I love the place. This Congress Avenue combo of a java joint and a mini-playhouse makes for a merry evening, alone or with amigos. I went with a small group of friends to their Saturday evening Maestro Improv show (10pm, $7) and had a wonderful time. The Heroes of Comedy put on an entertaining elimination-style improv that involves the audience and is sure to garner laughs, even from the toughest crowd. The house is small and the stage smaller, but it creates an intimate setting that makes you feel like you're the IN person in an inside joke (if that makes any sense...). Get tickets online or go a half-hour early to buy at the window. Hideout tip: they charge on a sliding scale of YOUR choice: $7-$10 per show. Nice. The larger portion of Hideout is not the theater (two stages), but the main floor coffeehouse. The atmosphere is quiet, but not stiff. The barista was patient with a long line and demanding requests (they serve a decent variety of specialty coffee beverages). Someone recommended their cinnamon roll (heated up) with a scoop of Amy's Mexican Vanilla (they sell Amy's!). Wow. That combination has officially entered my top five best desserts list. Semi-expensive prices (the dessert and a glass of wine cost me $10). The above is just a highlight of my experience - Hideout offers other shows and other desserts. The staff is cool shit, too. Very friendly, unlike how elitist coffeehouse staff has become over the years, that has allowed for a very welcoming, comfortable place to enjoy a nice cup of hot Jamaican Rooibson or White Peony tea. I approached the counter with Heather L. and asked the barista what I should order if I wouldn't be able to enjoy this Austin establishment for a while because my physical being would be in another state. He gave an excellent recommendation of the espresso rocket ($4.85) because a) Amy's Ice Cream is local, and b) Katz Coffee is in Houston. It was also /very/ effective at keeping me awake after dinner: like a woman on speed, I proceeded to stay up for way too many hours cleaning and working. (The barista also took the time to give me some handy advice since he turned out to have also lived where I'm planning to move to.) Heather got the Almond Joy and was correctly warned to steer clear of the special of the day (Sea Salt & Caramel Latté): the Almond Joy was so delicious. As we sat by the window enjoying our drinks and each other's company, we noticed the interesting things on the walls and ceiling (e.g., several human head sculptures high up on the wall, a doll in a Tarzan get-up hanging from the ceiling). And a bizarre, repurposed school bus labeled "Interstellar Communication" and a platform with a railing on top of it drove up and down Congress outside. Yes, there was a band of some sort on the bus's platform, and some guy hanging out the bus's front door. Thanks to the Hideout's large front window, we were quite entertained. The verdict: I'm going to miss the Hideout. It's definitely a place that is very Austin even as downtown is getting more and more Californian. Keep up the good work! read more

I came to The Hideout on a Thursday night to see an Improv "Threefer." The coffeeshop part when you enter has a familiar and comfortable vibe. The barristas were both very nice though I didn't buy anything. I went to the box office and purchased a ticket, which was only $3. I arrived at 7:45 and the show started at 8pm, so I sat in the café until it was time to go upstairs to the theatre. There also appeared to be a music stage downstairs...I didn't go to that show, but the sound quality was fantastic. They called us up- we trekked up the stairs to a small room with a stage and a cityscape set. Three different comedy troupes performed improv (much of which was based on audience suggestion). Overall, it was a really fun way to spend the evening if you're not a big drinker but want to be around nightlife. read more

It's a little worn, a little musty, you get some sketch characters in there sometimes; BUT it's got the best drinks, the best atmosphere, that "welcome home" feeling you only get from local Austin places. DRINKS & SERVICE: Excellent I stroll in here 2-3 mornings a week. Jackie and Michael are usually working. They promptly get me my El Pachon (their light roast coffee) with skim milk. If Jason D. (current check-in Duke here) is with me, Jackie only questions whether he would like a medium or large today, and then she whips up the best iced vanilla latte in town. There's a new kid that usually works weekends who also makes a mean latte (I usually get my hot almond-flavored latte with skim when he's working). Recently,since I'm cutting back on caffeine, I even braved the DECAF coffee. It's got a strong chocolatey flavor and is actually really good. Yes, that's right, the decaf coffee is good, I said that. (Though I still need one cup of my El Pachon, yum). FOOD: Good enough Sometimes I get a scone (doesn't hold a candle to Cake and Spoon, or Waltons, but I still find myself craving them (read: sugar addict)); sometimes I get an amazing Migas and Avocado breakfast taco ala Torchy's Tacos. (All the tacos are vegetarian. For meat ones, go to Royal Blue next door). The muffins and wraps are good too. I don't really come here for the food specifically, but I still enjoy it. DECOR/ATMOSPHERE: It's got character, definitely. I love the ever-changing artwork. The pink chairs and the long orange bench are a little gross. And I wish there were power strips coming out from under the orange benches so I wouldn't have to crawl under them to plug in my laptop. But it's comfortable enough for me to sit there for hours on end video editing. This is a GREAT place to work, until around 6pm when the improv crowd starts showing up. Man, those people are LOUD. I wouldn't call this place quiet, but I can easily ignore (even enjoy) some music and the casual coffee house conversation. But when it's time for improv classes to start, it's time for me to pack up my laptop. And I almost forgot, the bathrooms are clean and full of interesting graffiti that gets reset every so often. One of my favourite coffee shops in Austin. It's great if you are already walking around downtown but if you are driving--goodluck. They make excellent coffee and I usually stop in this place on New Years eve. They also sometimes sell torchy's tacos and some of the best biscotti I've had.
