Although the food they had sitting out for show didn't look very appetizing, it was cold and late and they had indoor seating so we decided to give it a try. We got the fish wrap, shrimp and chips and two clam chowder bread bowls. Price came out to about $42 which wasn't bad for eating at the pier. The fried shrimp came in 6 pretty large pieces. Freshly fried, they were delicious! I actually wish we got more of them. The fries were good too. The clam chowder bread bowls were creamy and tasty. They had bacon in it so that probably made it taste even better. Good amount of clams. I do wish they cleared out the bread bowls more so we could have had more chowder. The fish wrap was just ok to me. Not that much fish in it but a ton of lettuce, tomato and a bit too much sauce. If they put more fish in it, it would be pretty bomb. The fish that was in it though was nice and crunchy. Lots of indoor seating as well as outdoor. Staff was friendly. Food is made pretty quickly. I think most places have things that they make better and things they don't. With this place, I'd definitely just stick with their clam chowder and shrimp and chips. read more

The only reason why you'd come here is because you don't want to wait in line, you are super hungry, and there's tables available. Don't expect great tasting food or good food quality. I came here to buy my lunch during my break. I only came here because it was close to where I worked and there never seem to be a line. The food looks yummy but the pricing did not. The price was a tad bit expensive for a small plate of food. I ordered the fish and chip and only recieved a handful of fries with two fish sticks. I had discount but it was still expensive. My co-worker and I had gone for a walk down the Embarcadero - it was a beautiful day out, sunny and warm by San Francisco standards. We ended up at Pier 39 and found ourselves in want of some food. In true form to its touristy locale, the food is lackluster and the prices a bit high. For $10, I came back with a paltry two pieces of fish, breaded too heavily and cooked too long. if i could give it negative stars or 0 stars i would. We get there its super crowded so we assume that its popular and good. No just popular and im assuming its only because of the attraction of feeding nasty diseased pigeons that swamp at you for your food because the food couldnt have been the reason so many people were there. The price couldnt have been the reason so many people were there because you pay and arm and a leg for fish and chips alone. The customer service couldn't have been the reason because they were either busy rolling their eyes at you for a simple request of "please clean the bird crap off the table so we can sit" or they were too busy texting. Super rude!! So we were there 7/14 and we sit down on a filthy table. The birds are everywhere and there is literally no control or anything they do to try to detour this. These birds are clearly diseased as we saw one missing toes from the mites!! OMG! We FINALLY get our order which took forever btw, and it was so greasy you have to pile vinegar on your fish and chips just to eat it. It was tasteless and greasy!! The food was AWEFUL!!! I couldnt finish my food at all because i simply couldnt stomach it. I left feeling like i ate a brick. I didnt feel good at all. The portions are small and the food is lukewarm, not hot. Service is awful and run by young kids with no personality. Did I mention the food is not hot? Probably made a lot at first and left it to the heat lamps to keep lukewarm? Ordered fish and chips and as we all know it's not really good unless it's hot, fries still had brown peels on them, think it's laziness rather than style as they were also less than hot. $12 plus a $3 soda, worse I ever spent. Spicy Shrimp and Crab Chowder. AMAZING. I think it's tomato based because it's red, but I'm not sure. It tastes delicious and got a bit of a kick. Not very spicy, but enough to make it interesting. Yum! You can get it in a small cup, large cup, or bread bowl (~$6) Usually lines aren't too bad. There's not really an order to the line, you just go to anyone who looks free and then you pay at the two cash registers. GO GET THAT CHOWDA! read more

They have a little indoor seating and outdoor seating area. Just beware of how packed the tables will be! The food is great and prices are average! More like a 3 minus....Food was decent ( I enjoyed my fish and chips, and the soup in bread bowl was great ), and my Goddaughter enjoyed her shrimp dish. However, my little sister's hot dog looked and tasted quite gross. Another con is her hot dog, soda, and fries were close to $13 by itself, and refills were extra. The food was overall decent, but for the price I paid for food for me and two kids totaling $50+ seems ridiculous.....for that price, I would hope they would put more care in all of their food....not just their fish. I don't often look up places before I eat there but today I did.. Most of the reviews are bad but I decided to try hook & cook anyways because most people are complaining about the stupidest things. I ordered fried shrimp, garlic fries and a Heineken. The beer was a little on the flat side but the food was really good. The fried shrimp was perfect nice and crispy The garlic fries were good but I've had better. With that being said when I do return to the pier I would definitely eat here again. read more

I'm wavering between a 3 and a 4, but the 4 it will be. Mostly because the customer service was really nice -- and it is surprisingly a bit difficult to find a clam strips dinner in the SF area. Giving 1 Star for many reasons. The food is definitely over priced for the quality that they serve. 10.99 for fish and chips and they don't even make their own tartar sauce. They give you those sad Heinz packets. The fish was soggy and lacked crunch. The manager (didn't have a name tag but she had a mustache) was really rude when I asked for a to go bag to put my box in. She told me that it was 25 cents for a to go bag which okay, I get San Francisco laws. But then she had the nerve to tell me that EVERYONE knows it's the law. I then said "you mean to tell me that people from out of town and out of state know about this law before coming"? And she said "yeah". Girl, please. Not bad for a place on the pier. Get the seafood combo/platter and upgrade to garlic fries. You have to pay extra for the garlic fries but they give you more than what comes in the combo. You get a full order of garlic fries. Which, by the way, were absolutely BOMB. Still a bit pricey for what you get, but I'd say this was the best value. I also tried the clam...and shrimp chowder, but I don't recommend this at all. Very little seafood in it, and it tasted like straight up melted butter! :( Pricey for what you got too. I understand that this is a tourist trap but there are plenty of touristy places at the pier that give you a better value (and quality) for your money. Why does this place have so many bad reviews? I came here during the new years weekend, I was SUPER HUNGRY and we walked into this place. We split the 1/4 combo. 1/4 rack of ribs and 1/4 chicken. Comes with a dinner roll and it was about $12 total. Pretty pricey but we were hungry and getting tired of the same old clam chowder bowl (Even though the ones here were cheaper than usual!) The food was ok, it wasnt that bad. I thought it was good, but I was really hungry, So I guess everything at that time tasted good. Its pretty overpriced here but what eatery in Pier 39 is not? This is a fish'n'chips joint so I figured the fish'n'chips are a must get. I got them and I was not too impressed. It was made with cod and pretty standard, other than being surprisingly not oily. Despite being less oily, it was worse than my usual joint back in Westminster. The fries were oily and not too good. I didn't think it was excessively expensive ($8), the portion wasn't too large but just enough to fill me up. It wasn't too bad. Honestly, there was just nothing special enough about this place to warrant a better rating. But if you want fish and chips and something relatively cheap (compared to the other restaurants on Pier 39) then come here~ The GF ordered the Cajun Popcorn Shrimp and she adds: "It was really good! Meh, very mediocre fish and chips. That's about the best I can put it. I grabbed lunch here last week just because I was around checking on a field project nearby and wanted to grab a quick lunch. I would have explored for something nicer if I had more time. At least the staff seems pretty nice. Up front by the entrance is a spot where a young lady was stationed who would smile and ask if I wanted a beer. I went here once and got their clam chowder in a bread bowl and the clam chowder was delish! So much better than Boudin's. There were lots of clam, not so much potatoes (which I like), it's more flavorful than Boudin's in my opinion. The bread wasn't that good though. Compared to other places on the pier, this place is very cheap and its a good place if you want something quick and filling to hold you off until dinner time. The workers are consistent and very hospitable; it's understandable to be a little over the edge since it gets pretty busy and customers tend to act rude when their hungry. But other than that, the food (grilled chicken burger& hot link sausage) was really good! The coleslaw that is put inside the burger makes it really tastey and unique compared to other burgers. This was one of the one places my friends and I saw that served both a crab chowder and clam chowder. It took us a while. The crab chowder was a crab and shrimp chowder that was tomato-based, and it was really good. I still liked the original clam chowder, but it was definitely worth a try. I thought it was a little cheaper than some of the other places on the pier. Bottomline: Good stuff! My other friends ordered a salmon ciabatta (which was delightful) and a chicken ciabatta. Everytime I am forced to go to Pier 39, I always come here and eat the deep fried clams. This place is extremely busy at times (service can lag). Seagulls are always around along with their poop. Not only that, seating can be limited due to how busy it is. But I will say this. I love deep fried clams and the clam chowder. read more

My bf and I were being super touristy and thought that this place looked more "authentic" than wipeout. There were 4 groups in front of us and the line moved quickly. We waited no more than 5 minutes for our food and it was good. We got the crab cake sandwich and the seafood combo. The crab cake was good and was on a soft, light roll. I wouldn't recommend getting the seafood combo because everything was fried and slightly greasy... Doesn't sit too well if you eat the whole thing. I sampled the clam chowder as well. If you like bacon, you'll like the chowder here. You can really taste the bacon. The only downside is that we sat by the door and watched as pigeons (not sure how they got inside) almost decapitate guests... :( read more
