    Fish and chips

Nice location on the pier. The exterior is fun and interesting, employees were friendly. It was crowded but service was organized and we didn't wait long for our food. Our group ordered several different items. I ordered fish and chips. It consisted of two pieces of fish, some fries, and a "side" of slaw. The slaw was in a sample-sized cup, more like a garnish than an actual side dish. As for the fish, one piece was very good. The piece on the bottom was overcooked and hard, nearly burned. I went back to the counter to request extra tartar sauce which was handed to me with no additional charge. My friends were happy with their food choices, sandwiches and chowder. We dined inside, and it was startling to see pigeons flying inside to scrounge for food. They walked around on the floor looking for food. Overall, not a bad lunch. A little overpriced but it is a tourist area.

Food was good! Chicken was cooked perfectly. Service was not as fast as we thought it would be, because they called the numbers after us first, so we were quite disappointed ours took longer. Ambiance is perfect, loved the outside seating

The Hook can be found in the midst of the super touristy area of Pier 39. It wasn't nearly the worst tourist-trap type restaurant I've ever been to, but it still was overpriced and pretty unsatisfying. We were enjoying ourselves hanging out and taking in the sights at Pier 39 when we decided to take in a quick bite and a drink and came across The Hook. The Philly cheesesteak was just not very good at all. It was very basic and overpriced for what you actually got. Just check out the pics. Very average at best. The beer was just a Bud Light draft, but tasted WAY watered down. There was definitely something off about that beer. It was pricey and unsatisfying, so we decided to cut our losses and save the real grubbing for a better place. 2 stars.

Although I've tried this spot before and was slightly underwhelmed, this second visit was a pleasant surprise! I've had coworkers recommend this spot for their Philly cheesesteak and their grilled onions and peppers ALONE, so that is exactly what I tried this time around. It's interesting because I've saw photos of this sandwich in previous reviews, and I always thought it looked a bit small for my liking but when I got it I was happy to see that it was a decent size. It has exactly what you'd think: Shredded Steak cooked with Onions and Peppers with the infamous cheese sauce. It was filling and delicious! The savory cheese pairs perfectly with the flavorful steak and sweet grilled onions and peppers. If you go, I genuinely could not recommend the Philly cheesesteak more.

I got the butterfly fish with fries and Tatar sauce. This place is pretty pricy for the amount of food you get. It was really good other than that and theres seating inside and outside. The service was kinda quick but it depends on how many people are there.

The staff was nice but the food was not good. It was edible but bland. We got a fish and chips, a seafood mix, a bacon hot dog, a Philly cheesesteak, and three drinks for a little over $100. They also don't validate parking from the public parking just fyi. Kind of crappy because parking is $10 per hour unless a restaurant validates it. Idk why they don't validate. The fish was overcooked. The Philly cheesesteak had squeezy nacho cheese on it, the tartar sauce was bland, and the chowder was sweet and gritty.

Never had anything so horrendous. Actually ridiculous. Paid $16 for food that's worth $7 max. Very disappointing. Edit: my friend and I both got a stomachache after, don't recommend

Disappointing Experience with Fried Calamari Unfortunately, my recent visit to this establishment was a letdown. I ordered the fried calamari, which was one of the worst I've ever had. The dish was dry and lacked flavor, which was disappointing. The lackluster food may have contributed to the noticeable absence of customers. Normally I check the review before I try a new place and I failed this time . I was just craving for calamari and stopped here without checking reviews . Rating: 1/5 stars

Great location in the area, love their fish and chips basket. Too bad I'm not staying in SF longer.

    Clam chowder in bread bowl
    Roxanne P.

While visiting San Francisco with my best friend, we stopped at The Hook on Pier 39, and shared a clam chowder in a bread bowl. It was delicious! The chowder was creamy, flavorful, and packed with tender clams, and the bread bowl was the perfect vessel--crispy on the outside and soft inside. The casual, laid-back vibe of the place was perfect for a quick meal while enjoying the views. It's a bit on the pricier side, but for fresh seafood and the atmosphere, it's totally worth it. If you're in the area, definitely give it a try! Video Review will be posted on Tik Tok @Foxy.appetite and Instagram @Foxyappetite soon

    Fisherman Platter

First time at the pier and wanted to try the sourdough bread bowl clam chowder. Tried it here and it was delicious! My husband had the fisherman platter and I tased the shrimp and it was amazing! The view of the seals outside and the harbor were beautiful. The only thing lacking from making the place perfect was the service. Our server was rude. Like I get it, you have to serve tourists all day long, but throwing down my water saying "here" was unnecessary. Loved the food, but wouldn't come back.

The food was slightly over priced, two pieces for $16 is a bit much. The food was not that good as well. The fries are soggy and kind of wet?? The coleslaw is almost literally onion and cabbage, no sauce whatsoever. Service was ok.

This is a fun seafood shop. The wharf has many but it's the specialty. I had the fried shrimp and it was fun..many shrimp..I asked for a discount and he took off like four dollars..with french fries Here's to pier 39

When you arrive, look for an outdoor venue with a permanent food truck (before food trucks were cool) and outdoor seating. You'll be greeted by only the kindest Brit's you've ever met. Depending on how busy they are, they can get the food to you pretty fast considering they are deep within the tourist section of San Fran. 10-15 minutes. The cod has a crispy batter, fluffy inside, and tender white flaky fish. Perfectly seasoned to consume straightaway. If you'd prefer, their tartar sauce is also amazing. (Can't speak for the malt vinegar as that's not my thing.) Ditto for the shrimp. Medium sized, flavorful, and you can't have one seafood without the other. The fries are also perfectly cooked to order. I'm so happy to see, that in 2026, they are holding a 4.4 stars with over 3,532 reviews. I can't wait to visit them again. One of the cleanest "fried" food places this side of the coast. Only one place completes with them directly in my book down in Ventura. Way to go!

My lower review was the food. My mom ordered fish n chips for 17.99 Clam chowder..no bread for 13.99. The clam chowder was disgusting. It was so watered down like water...a few potatoes...I saw no any clams...and no clam flavor at all...see my video. I make clam chowderfir my mom a few tines a year becauseshe loves it...I know what it should taste like. I tried my moms to see if she was over reacting...nope..it literally tasted like drinking warm milk..no flavor...disgusting and for 13.00 for maybe 8 oz...they should feel ashamed of themselves... My mom however loved her fish and chips. Fresh fish...batter light and crispy...good tartar sauce. I ordered the calamari and fish tacos. I loved the fish on my tacos..did not like the sauce. The smokey flavor was too much. It took over. I would order them again with no sauce...they give you a good size piece of fish on the tacos...and the fish is good. The calamari was good. Again the same sauce to dip made it where I do not want to eat it again. I dont like the Chipotle sauce...the smoke flavor is too powerful. A simple white crema would be much better. That is what I eat locally and keep ordering the tacos again and again. If I am in SF again..I would choose another place to eat. They have outdoor eating area. Flies and birds flying around. Covered tables which was nice since it was hot.
