I have been very disappointed in the Keep the last two times I visited. Makes me very sad because the views are outstanding and I have been coming to this restaurant for 25 years. I visited on New Years Eve. Salads were delicious, apps were delicious, no substitutions were allowed on a very limited menu (swap requested for side item due to allergies) steak medallions were overcooked and the food took SO LONG. Service was ok. Visited in August when I said good bye to two of my pups in one day. There were inside tables available, but waited 45 minutes for a patio seat. Wanted to watch the sun go down from the deck over diner and drinks to wish my pups well on their journey over the rainbow bridge. We requested a table by the edge, but were seated in the middle. Once we were seated, another table was sat where we requested to be sat and the staff immediately lowered the blinds because the sun was setting. Keep in mind that there were tables available inside if needed, and the whole purpose we visited was for the sunset and view. When I asked the waitress to pull the shade back up she refused and said she had to appease the other table. Very disappointed. Food was ok, but took forever and was just ok. I can never replace that opportunity to say goodbye to my boys as planned. Very poor choice by staff to appease a table who could have went inside and honored my request (they were aware of the reasoning behind the request). For a restaurant who posts that they were awarded best view from a restaurant and best outdoor dining, they threw those options right out the window with no regard for customer request. Went here on a Friday evening for a date night and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. We were seated promptly and were greeted by our server on a timely fashion. When it came time to order, I got the filet mignon without the bacon with mashed potatoes and a mixed greens salad. Steak was cooked and seasoned beautifully! My boyfriend ordered the ribeye with mashed potatoes and his was a tad overdone and quite fatty (more than is typical with ribeye). He still enjoyed it though. We got the berry crisp for dessert which was sweet and tart and all sorts of yummy! Overall, I would recommend the Keep for date nights, anniversaries, birthday dinners with family etc. Also, the views are breathtaking, so if you're able to snag a table near the windows, do it!! read more

We tried to make a reservation - $150.00 deposit. Was told we could come and eat in the lounge or outside patio. We drive 30 miles to find out the lounge and patio are closed for private party. We should have been told this. The manager simply said we were given the wrong information. Our friends were there a month ago and the service was terrible! They got 2/4 salads before the appetizer. I ate dinner at The Keep restaurant last night and was greatly disappointed with the overall service. The five of us arrived at 4:00 pm, in hopes of getting something easy with a few drinks and sitting in the bar area. We were the ONLY people in this area for 2 hours. First: we asked to sit in the main area so we could see the storm coming in. We were told there was no room (totally empty) and they would have to put 2 tables together. Huh? We were directed to a back corner (very dark) space and added an extra chair to the table. There was no discussion about moving until we finally asked to be moved and said we didn't mind being a bit cramped at one table. Well, once again someone went to talk to a manager. Finally, two tables were put together and we moved. The customer service at this place is zero. I have heard this from many people. Too bad. Consider this a high three knocking on the 4 door. Great views of the city lights at night and of googy golfers during daylight. Perched high on a hill this one-time residence was moved from the city to this location, burned down a couple of times and reserected. Very classy, esp for Missoula, a university town and Montana in general. Pricey, which gives it 3 stars because although the meals are good and the service appropriate, the value for price ratio is a bit too low for me. That said, the bar is very nice and menu pretty darn good with unusual and unusually prepared entres and appetizers...plus desserts. I had halibut tonight. I was not impressed. It must have been the tail and was flavorless and chewy. Potatoes were undercooked.

Came to The Keep with a large group of family. Nice view, good service, food was hit and miss. I did hear from a couple people in our group that the scallops were great. Halibut was super dry/ overcooked. My ribeye was TERRIBLE. Equivalent of picking up a steak from Winco then somehow slicing that steak into 1cm thick separate steaks to make an extra buck. Being so thin it was of course cooked far past my requested medium rare then covered in a sacrilegious brown gravy looking sauce. Friendly service and good food. It appears they have a fine dining restaurant and a pub area. We are outside with the pub like menu. Crab tacos were very good and the skillet salad was also delicious. The view was priceless, great place if you are from out of town. They accommodated a gluten free diet by substituting wheat tortillas to corn. read more

This place really knows how to cook and the food doesn't come off as overdoing it or trying too hard like a lot of restaurants in Missoula tend to do. Beautiful view. Fabulous cocktails from a super bartender, and excellent food in a relaxed but gorgeous setting. We enjoyed dirty martinis in the bar overlooking the first tee, before settling onto the balcony for our meal. The calamari to start was delicious. And I, personally, had the special of haddock that day, which was phenomenal! Paired with a lovely Sauvignon Blanc, the meal was complete. One of the most expensive restaurants in Missoula. $50 for a pork osso buco? It had better be perfect. And the meat was. The accompanying gnocchi however could have been eaten with a straw. Took off half a star for this because my partner liked it and ate it. The other half a star came from the tiramisu which we had had before. I noticed this time however it had been made with would appeared to be Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix. Not a lady finger in sight. Likewise for actual espresso. Half a star for this. Another pretty disappointing meal. The "All green everything" cocktail was delicious as were the appetizer mussels and calamari. However our entrees took forever to come out for some reason and the halibut was dried out to the point that I couldn't get a knife through the skin to cut it. Our waiter Scott J. was very good. Thanks to him! The seafood entrees were very good. However, the medium-rare NY Strip Steak special was tough and overcooked. The views might be great but we were put at a table in the back with a constant mechanical whirring audible. It was 6pm reservation on a Tuesday in March for "a big birthday" for a family member and we were right on time. When we arrived my request for a view citing the occasion was ignored, and my party, including the birthday gal, were unwilling to share my desire to make any further protest for a better table. I have yet to eat in the lounge but the formal dining area is always superb so I assume it's just as good. The atmosphere is quite nice as well with incredible views overlooking Missoula. This restaurant is the opposite of a hole in the wall. We have been here before (about a year & a half) and had an excellent experience during both visits. The view looking out over the city from just the parking lot was breathtaking. The building is a beautiful stone & wood structure resembling a sturdy castle keep. Inside, the service is top shelf; the staff is friendly, helpful, and attentive. We are arrived in Missoula late after a grueling 8 hour drive from Seattle. Hungry, tired, and not motivated to deal with a fussy menu or snooty service. This place hit the spot. We enjoyed an excellent rare rib steak with asparagus and vegetables. A nice Cab Sauv for me and a hefeweizen for my soon to be Dear Hubby (yes, this was our wedding trip). I recommend the bar seating, which is more casual and suited to the menu in my opinion, but the fine dining area would be better for a large party, and I could see holding a retirement party or similar function here. The decor is definitely kitschy, but in the best way, and we really enjoyed the roaring fire in the fireplace. Service was professional, warm but unobtrusive. read more

We made a date night out of our visit to the Missoula symphony by going out to dinner first. I went looking for a restaurant we hadn't tried and found The Keep. It's out of the downtown part of Missoula and up in the south hills. There is a golf course too for those of you that like to golf. Dining starts at 5 PM. When I first read the menu I saw the clams sauteed in garlic, pesto and white wine I knew I had found my dining spot. I adore littleneck clams and don't get to eat them that often. The hubby is severely allergic so I don't cook them at home. These were perfectly cooked. The broth was a bowl of heaven and I ate every single one. I think I could have eaten two bowls. The hubby had cajun calamari. It too was cooked perfectly. Calamari can be tricky; overcook it and it turns into a rubberband. This was tender and delicious. We both ordered the Caesar salad, although the hubby got his with anchovies (ick.) The salad was good, not great. It seemed as if the lettuce was a little wet when it was dressed so it was a bit watered down. There was a good bit of garlic and plenty of cheese. Several entrees looked enticing. I wasn't feeling my best so I opted for a lighter choice rather than the duck that I really wanted. The sea scallops with shallots, garlic bacon in a pomegranate reduction won. They wers served with my choice of rice and the vegetable of the night, spaghetti squash. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the meal was good. It was just short of great by a few shakes of salt. The hubby ordered wasabi pea encrusted seared ahi with soy ginger sauce and pickled ginger. He chose fettuccine alfredo (?!) for his starch and he also received spaghetti squash. I had a taste of his ahi and it was delicious. The wasabi pea crust added a nice heat to the mostly raw fish. His minor complaint was an insufficient amount of sauce and ginger to go with the amount of tuna. Our server Diana was very friendly and attentive but as the night wore on the section filled and she had many tables to care for. As several were seated at the same time she needed to deal with them and we languished a bit at the end of our entree. As we had to be at the theatre it left us unable to have dessert or coffee. View is awesome, ambiance is great, but the service, to price, to quality ratio is just a little off. I have never had a bad dish here per-se, but I just don't think the prices quite warrant the quality of the food. Same goes for the service, have never had "bad" service, but the servers I have had here are not the same caliber you would expect to find for this price point (overly knowledgeable about food and wine and associated pairings, a "foodie" so to speak), they just seem a little, well, amateur. Also, the "desert cart" is a little more than tacky (may not still have this as it has been a while since I was last here) The prices (especially for Missoula) are reflective of a five star, renown restaurant; unfortunately what follows just doesn't quite add up. Probably worth trying for yourself, if not for the view and location alone, just don't expect to be blown away. read more

From the atmosphere and clientele I'd say it was a great restaurant 20 years ago. Food standards and quality have gone up and for the price you can get much better somewhere else. We ordered the calamari which was good but the lamb and ribeye were definitely below standards. The ribeye needed a better sear, the quality of beef was low for the price. The lamb was not crusted well enough or seared well. You received 3 slices of lamb. One of my slices was bad...as in the meat was spoiled! Very disappointing! The sides were nothing to write home about. All in all, I would not be back or recommend this place to anyone. First time here. Excellent service food and atmosphere Someone did mention the salad dressing might be watered down a bit. I tend to believe this. My husband felt his was fine. Portions were fine. My husband had the bacon wrapped filet. Side of mashed and seasoned vegetables. I guess that was all you got you might think it was small however the filet was easily 7 ounces and after a decent size salad which had a mix of fresh veggies was more than enough. Husband had the rib appetizer. WOW ! Huge portion! You can tell they are oven baked though but still good. I chose the calamari. Now living in California and visiting Florida and Boston frequently I must say the calamari was surprisingly fresh, tender and VERY good. For the entree I chose the shrimp scampi. It was excellent and a bit of a twist on scampi but really enjoyed it. I was not sure about the shrimp ( I being really picky here ) but not sure if they were just slightly over cooked or not as fresh as I'm used to eating and living close to fresh and local seafood. I realize you can take shrimp too far VERY easily. My husband thought they were fine and he is an amazing cook. We normally only go to the Pearl for fine dining but now we have this restaurant to go to as well and will DEFINITELY be back. read more

We have eaten at The Keep for many years, and have had many excellent meals there. However, tonight, three out of the four in our party had meals that were simply horrible! I had the chicken marsala. One small piece on chicken with a sauce that did not even resemble normal marsala sauce. The side of mixed vegetables were the worst I have ever had. The green beans were obviously previously frozen, and the carrots and zucchini were almost raw. I could eat more than a single bite. My buddy had the pork chop, and it was so over-done that is was a dry as an old sock. He too had the inedible side veggies. The service was also very slow. I should have listened to the other recent reviews, the service was subpar, which can be excused with covid, but the food was also subpar. It should not take 2 hours to get dinner. Lamb was well done when I asked for medium-rare, carrots were not cooked at all. We were sat in the sun at 5pm, which may have been ok, but over the course of 2 hours it became very uncomfortable.
