Great looking restaurant with amazing views but lacks warm food apparently. Went with my girl friend for a birthday dinner and paid hefty but was served obviously pre-cooked food that was slightly warm at best, along with a creme brulee that had most definitely been in a fridge all day before being served. Great neighborhood haunt for some of us. It is also a nice upscale treat for locals. Amazing view of the entire town at night, indoor fireplace and usually live music. Good wine selection and a full bar. The bar eating area is nice and casual but there is also formal dining. The menu is always first class but also has a burger if your not looking for duck. Amazing to think there is a golf pro shop in this place (downstairs),but a favorite for sure. read more

Four of us dined at The Keep tonight and by our waitress' admission they were not prepared for a crowd, warning us 30 minutes in that there might be a 40 minute wait for food. More on that in a bit. The restaurant appears very nice and is attached to what appears to be a beautiful golf course. We had reservations, got there early and were seated immediately. Our drink and appetizer orders followed very quickly. It was all down hill from there. The promised 40 minute wait turned into an hour. We were actually served 90 minutes after our arrival and 60 minutes after we ordered. The entire place was understaffed, it appeared and the restaurant was not particularly busy. The men ordered the rib eye steaks and both steaks were prepared properly but served with the wrong side dishes. Our wives ordered the duck which was reported to be excellent and the scallops which we were told were nothing special. We ordered desserts as well and I enjoyed the Huckleberry and Strawberry Crisp with ice cream. The crisp was clearly microwaved as it came out in very short order; too short to have been reheated in an oven. Overall, the meal was nothing special and while they comped our drinks and appetizers, we did not go there for free food, we went there because the place was supposed to be a very good restaurant. So, the food was nothing special and service was bad until our waitress found out our orders were wrong. It was at that point that she paid real attention to our table. We're not likely to try the place again as we are out of towners and Missoula has a number of fine dining experiences. Good luck if you go. I would recommend a slow night but my experience is that a good restaurant is even better when they are busy. read more

I recently went here for an anniversary dinner - the building itself is breathtaking, it looks and feels like a castle. The indoor decor is a little outdated, but fits with the architecture. The wait staff were underdressed for the feel of the restaurant. I ordered the Shrimp Scampi and he ordered the Rack Of Lamb (per recommendation of our waitress). We started with glasses of wine and bread - all very delightful. Our entrees came with salads, which were crisp and delicious. We both absolutely loved our main dishes. The shrimp were very large and crisp and the portion size was generous. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked. We will definitely be returning. read more

I am a little disappointed. I had called a few months ago to purchase a gift certificate. I had left a voice mail stating I would like to purchase a gift certificate and a phone number to call me back, and no one ever responded? I had to buy a $500 gift certificate elsewhere. Great place to watch the sunset while enjoying the view of the city. I stopped in for a quick bite before having to leave town--as I almost always do--and had the best time. Great food and service! I recommend going on a Sunday and sitting in the bar. Ask the bartender-Chris to mix you his specialty...Mojito's. Yum!!! The bar also has a great menu and reasonable prices. First of all, I understand everybody has an off day, and I've only eaten there once, so take this for what its worth. I took my fiancé there for her birthday and she had fish and I had the buffalo (tenderloin I think). The service was great, but the food was only so so. For what it cost, I was disappointed in the food. I've heard good things about The Keep, but I was not impressed. I'll give it another try soon, hopefully I can rave about it next time. read more

Wonderful experience I brought a group of 27 to Missoula for a conference. I could not find a Restuarant to handle a group that size. After a by change web search I found The Keep. Melissa was easy to work with and very accommodating with my numerous count changes. The views are breathtaking and the service was top notch. Fantastic lamb chops, and reasonably priced. A great wine list, and well made cocktails, with good bourbon selection. Pork belly appetizer was delicious. Main negative is that the sides were extremely small, just a few mixed veggies, and very small portion of rice, pasta, or potato. But the main dishes shined. what I find interesting is only favorable posts are on this site,,,,,,,we get up there often,,just like the place,,,but the service has always been sketchy,,,but last nite was horrible,,,,,,,,,,,,,,we arrive at 510,,,wait for drink order,,then for drinks,,prob 15 minutes,,get appetizer,,,for a table of 5 she puts out a small basket of bread,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, we wait and wait,,,someone ordered another beer,,,,,,,,,never comes,,,it is sitting on the bar as we were in bar area,,i almost got up and grabbed it myself as apparently our server is inept,,,,,,,,we wait,,,my friend gets her salad,,,was to come with meal,,so I am thinking finally,,,nope,sat there for 15 more minutes,,,,,,,,,,,, I see a table of four come in,,they ate and left and we are still waiting for food,,,,,,,,,now what is wrong with this picture,so at 640 our food is served,3 steaks med rare are well done,,mashed and veggies are cold,,,,,,and no one dares send it back to get done right,,,,, two tables beside us,,one had to walk up to bar and ask for menu and a drink as after 15 minutes no one served them,,the other couple got there salads when we got our steaks and they were there about the same time,,,,,so he gets his steak and turns it away,,,was well done,,,,,,,,so when we finally leave at 715,,his wife is done eating and he is sitting there waiting for his steak,,, I wish I made this up but not the case,,,if they wanted to,,,, they could not have done worse,so from 515 to 715 and dropped almost 200 dollars that was it,,,,,,,,,,i called the manager,,sounded like she was 21 years old,,she admitted she knew about it and said there was a commnunication breadown,,,,,,,,,,,,well I thot a manger who sees this going on is supposed to approach the problem explain etc,,,,,,,,,,guess not,,, if not for having 2 elderly people with us I would have left long before enduring that diaster,,,,so our server gives us two free deserts,,,,,,,,,,,guess that made u for the 2 hour wait and steaks cooked wrong and everything else cold,,,,,,,,,,,,, sadly I love the place but dread going back,,,service is and remains horrible,,,will be quite awhile before I subject myself to that,,,,,,,, read more

I went here for my birthday recently and lets just say it was not enjoyable what so ever! I've been here before during the summer a few years back. I was in awe and absolutely fell in love with the charm of the place and couldn't wait to go back. But now (last night), I was to the point of disgust and both my boyfriend and I wanted to walk out. Poor service-waited over 40mins for the check and I'm sure for our main courses too. I had ordered the shrimp scampi (which I know gets cold pretty quick, but I believe a chef should understand and try prevent that as much as possible) but it was so cold to the point I forced myself to eat just because I was starving and that our waitress was too preoccupied with the other customers in the room ( I think she was the only waitress for one whole side of the restaurant.) Also I should mention that the dish was not at all what I thought was described on the menu or how our waitress described too. But as we both froze by the window (trying the enjoy the night) we had to scream to be able to hear each other on top of other loud groups and the STAMPEDE of stomps from the second floor. I kid you not, us and other customers thought the ceiling would give more than just once. The couple behind us even said something about that they would've brought their kids if they knew the place was that lenient. Truthfully my boyfriend and I are not the type to make scenes but it was not a good experience at all. At least we are already laughing about how ridiculous the night was, but we will never go back. Very Montana. Great atmosphere, great views, and the service is always fantastic. The food is good (maybe not the very best in town, but right up there) and the prices are reasonable for this level of restaurant. Leaps and bounds above the Depot and Soctty's Table, especially in terms of ambiance and service, could maybe take a note from The Red Bird and The Pearl in terms of the actual menu. Overall, Shadows Keep is a great option for a nice evening out in Missoula. read more

The Keep: Took my wife here on our anniversary to spoil her a little. Server was Excellent** Atmosphere was good. Appetizers were expensive but delicious. Entrees were massively over-priced, very small. Poorly plated, and horribly (not said lightly) ***HORRIBLY cooked!!!!***** $35 bought me 5 scallops and a reheated lump of curry-laden rice. 1 scallop was cooked well, the others ranged from slightly raw to almost 100% raw. I couldn't eat more than 2, so they brought it back. Rather than cooking new scallops, they simply threw mine back on the pan and tried again. Now they had a rubbery outside, and amazingly 2 still seemed to be undercooked. I didn't want to make a scene so I ate them anyways, and became really ill for the next few days. My wife ordered the rack of lamb for $40, which was about the size of a small child's fist, this was also under-cooked and nearly raw in the center. My wife thought maybe it was supposed to be like that, and ate it anyways. She also fell ill. So in all I spent $100 for a nice appetizer, two glasses of iced tea and two severe cases of food poisoning to go with our anniversary dinner. Needless to say if you go here, order something that doesnt need to be cooked to be safe (like cheese, or a salad). We will not be coming here again. I would have asked for my money back if I wasn't worried about embarracing my wife. Though now I really wish I had! read more

This place keeps getting worse. Great location, nice staff, food is terrible. Mushroom appetizer uncooked, chicken cordon blue a fried wad of something that came out of a 50 pound box. It had a burned greasy breading that tasted like it was prepared in a commercial warehouse months earlier. Get a new chef or give it up. read more

A great place to relax and have a quiet meal with friends! I love their bar menu, it's affordable and filling, and on a warm summer night, the view of Missoula's city lights is beautiful!! My H & I love to go out for martinis & apps every once in a while. This place may have the best in town (cant speak to Pearl or Scottys cuz they dont have martinis). We went here a couple months ago, had escargot, calimari & the beef thingy, all excellent. We went last weekend & this time got crabcake, wings & artch & mushroom thing - these were not as good. They were good but not excellent. This was the lounge, dont know about the main part. Also we found the prices to be on par w other upscale restaurants and the view cannot be matched. The only bad thing is the lounge, which is lovely & has a great outdoor patio, is poorly lit. I hate that. read more

Excellent food, good service and pleasant decor

My husband and I went here for are anniversary dinner. We set in the dinning area which was not very busy but the deck was. It has a beautiful view, food was good, and our server was very nice. The food was done well but sort of basic, thats the only reason I gave it a 4 not a five (The pairings were just what you would expect every where nothing exciting) Pricing is expensive but I would say it is worth it for the atmosphere. The price you pay for a nice fancy dinner. I think our waiter comped our dessert though which was nice :) read more

Very disappointing dinner. My fish was way over cooked, our food was lukewarm and the vegetables were raw. A couple came in after us and received their food before us. My husband called the next day with our concerns. She was nice and said she would reimburse us. We received nothing in the mail. 3 + weeks later, we call again. On a hill overlooking Missoula, so the view can be fabulous. BUT, make sure you reserve a table on the patio! We didn't and got stuck in the dining room in the back away from the (few inside) windows, so it wasn't special. The decor is so dated (Victorian!) and dreary. I was worried about the dinner when I sampled the bread (dry, tasteless & cold). The salad wasn't any better (runny Caesar dressing and blah flavor). The entree, however, was delicious. Everyone (there were 8 of us) loved their entree, so go figure. Maybe it was the fact that there was a full bar! Anyway, if you don't get a patio table or the day is overcast, forget it. We were visiting Missoula, so it might have been an off night but it WAS Mother's Day, so you'd think they'd make an extra effort for an all around good meal. I found myself struggling to write this review and give the Keep such a low score but factually I am shocked at the pathetic quality of food and service. Many years ago we used to dine at 'Shadows' Keep and the food and service was 'quite good' although certainly not excellent. However now it seems that the new owners take fine dining to a new level of low even for MIssoula. We ordered the scallops which were rubbery and tasteless and the salmon which was so overdone I could have used it for shoe leather. The waitress was snotty when we attempted to say that the food was unacceptable. Her response was that we ordered it so we should eat it. Others sitting around us were also complaining and the responses from the other wait staff was consistent with ours. If you want an outrageously overpriced meal (ours was $130.00) then this is the place for you. The view remains good. I can't imagine how this place continues to remain in business. Likely because of the golf course and alcohol. read more
