Being parked on the corner of Highland and Manhattan Beach Blvd since 1973, The Kettle is one of the Last Bastions of Freedom that defends the character of Manhattan Beach from becoming Beverly Hills. Real ones know how much MB has changed over the past 20+ years from Wahoo's shuttering its doors years ago and Tacolicious opening on it's grave (paying $20 for 3 tiny little tacos feels like a sin), to the Manhattan Beach Pizzeria needing a gofund me to stay open. It feels like my childhood is being closed down. The Kettle and its 24 hour diner food has helped raise me. The amount of memories it has given me through time is endless: Eating with friends after school on half day Fridays, seeing Pau Gasol here in 2010, coming post prom night at 3am with our group of 20+, gathering here when someone in our group chat was down bad about a girl to regroup and talk it out, coming here fresh off the plane from LAX otw home from college to meet with your high school buddies to catch up, etc. The Kettle acts as sort of an Independence Hall for Manhattan Beach. When I was a chubby 12 year old kid without a care in the world, the spinach artichoke dip with piping hot pita bread on the side was there for me. When I was 17 and got my heart shattered into a million pieces, the chicken breast with scrambled egg whites with broccoli instead of potatoes was there for me. Now, a 27 year old BEAST, the chicken breast with scrambled egg whites with steak fries instead of potatoes and a Bran Muffin is there for me. The Kettle is part of the Manhattan Beach culture, literally everything about it oozes class, quality and Manhattan beach culture. I don't think I've ever been disappointed about spending time in this place. The service is amazing and it's not overpowering which also is very important. The burger selection is exceptional-- meaning they make your burger the way you want it. The menu isn't too busy plus they serve breakfast all day, in fact they serve everything all day because it's open 24 hours, so don't feel too crazy if you go for the breakfast at 5pm. A gem in Manhattan Beach in my opinion. I dined here on a Thursday evening around 6:15pm and there was no wait. The restaurant itself, felt cozy, clean and there's also outdoor seating with heaters as well. Servers were super attentive and friendly. There's so many items on the menu that all looked delicious w/ Vegetarian/Pescetarian options. We ordered the Spinach and Artichoke dip served with the most warmest and soft pita bread slices. I highly recommend this - it was sooo good! I got myself the petite soup and salad combo. The chicken tortilla soup was so hearty and good. Paired with the Caesar salad which I found to be the perfect pairing. The petite combo was a good size and made me really full with extra leftovers. My friends ordered a burger and salad and everyone was happy with their food. It was delicious and I wasn't even hung over. Haha. I asked for mine with toast instead of the corn tortillas and they brought me both. The toast they serve with it is high quality and thicker slices. The whole wheat felt more like a pumpernickel. My friend ordered the granola, fruit and yogurt. He said the granola was solid. The yogurt was standard (although they brought the wrong flavor). He said the melons were bland and watery. The servers were nice and quick. The restaurant is spacious and mostly wood decor. My mother and I love going to The Kettle for an early morning breakfast. We tend to be early birds on the weekends, so The Kettle comes in clutch with their convenient business hours. The Crabcake Benedict is my favorite. They use real lump blue crab; the eggs are always perfectly poached; and they are never stingy with the hollandaise. I am not too keen on bread, so I usually sub out the English Muffin for spinach instead. My mom is a huge fan of their freshly baked muffins. I usually default to a Guavamosa for something sweet. I liked the chicken tortilla soup and Chinese chicken salad (yeah, seems like a weird combo, but it worked!) Oh, and it came with a muffin too! I thought the waitress said, "Corn muffin" but it turned out to be an "orange muffin." I got the BBQ pulled pork we hash and it was a great move. The BBQ sauce was absolutely amazing with the pork and it went so well with the crunch of the tater tots and the runny yolk. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. The ambiance was very homey and warm, with neutral colors and cozy booths. We had just gotten into town late at night, had nowhere to eat, and stumbled upon The Kettle (which is open 24 hours, luckily!) We went in and got our seats and talked about walking down to Manhattan Beach (the actual beach) that night, which was VERY close to the Kettle. It was super cold though, being nighttime and so close to the ocean, so I was shivering and talking about going to a store to buy a light jacket. Our waitress was very kind and tried to help us find directions to the nearest one. When she couldn't figure it out, she had another waitress come help too, and they both went on a mission to find the closest store that was open that late. Unfortunately, there were none and we were out of luck finding a jacket. However, our waitress actually went and got her OWN jacket and gave it to me to KEEP! She said that she didn't pay very much for it and she could see that we midwesterners were freezing in the ocean weather. I know this has been all about the staff being great. Great food and service as usual at The Kettle last week. You cannot believe my joy when I realized I was there on Wednesday and I was able to get the Portuguese bean and andouille sausage soup! It has been the same amazing recipe and delicious soup for over 35 years. I know this, because I worked there 34 years ago!! I did try a new entrée this time. I fully enjoyed the pot roast dip sandwich, which I added cheese to. Drooling now just thinking back to that meal. One friend had a gorgeous steak and vegetables, and another enjoyed breakfast for dinner. I hate to say it, but I can't remember the servers name. I also got a date shake with my partner, as it was a new menu item! The verdict: date shake was nice and creamy, but it didn't have much date flavor to it: it tasted mostly like vanilla ice cream, but with a hint of date bits inside. Not bad, but not what I expected. The grilled cheese and French onion soup, however, SOLD me. Extra gooey from the cheese and with a fantastic, crispy rye bread, the sandwich was the ultimate comfort food and guilty pleasure rolled into one. The rye bread really did it for me, as it had more texture and mouth-feel than your usual white bread grilled cheese sandwich and had some skirt cheese on top. The French onion soup was also the perfect vessel to cut through the decadent nature of the grilled cheese. I highly approve. Overall, The Kettle is a solid restaurant to go for just about any occasion at any time of day: I'd like to return to check out more of its menu, as well as enjoy a glass of wine just blocks from the beach. Came here for a late night bite with the fam. We ordered the zucchini fries and chicken strips for appetizers. My husband really enjoyed the zucchini fries and he's not a big fan of them so that tells you a lot. For our entrees we ordered the braised pot roast dip sandwich which the meat was a bit too dry for my taste but we did really enjoy their French onion burger!
