I was in the area of OC and wanted some good Hawaiian food. Way way back in the days I use to go to the one in Gardena or Torrance. But anyways I remember the food be wonderful. But this time it was NOT good. I ordered the Island Style Fried chicken, Korean BBQ beef, Bacon fried rice and the Fried Saimin with Chicken Char Siu. The only thing that was good was the Bacon Fried Rice. Island Style Fried Chicken was over cooked and not juicy. Dry for our taste. It comes with 1 scoop of mac salad which was good and 1 scoop of ramen cabbage. The ramen cabbage was more like cabbage and a few tiny pieces of ramen. Wasn't sure if there was a shortage of ramen that day or what. The Fried Saimin had a floural taste. I did not enjoy that at all. Korean BBQ beef was hard. The portions of the place was not worth the cost of the meal. Sucks I use to like this place a lot. Oh well maybe next time... If there is a next time. Parking is in a plaza so you have a lot of parking. The young cashier lady was very helpful over the phone and she was nice in person. That is why this place got a extra star. This review will be small, just like my order. I had just come from my facial next door, and I had a huge headache. I knew I'd be getting food with my boyfriend later so I was like okay, I'm going to grab something to nibble on while I drive to his house. I got a side of macaroni salad. It was $2 and I figured it would be small, but not so small it would be gone in literally two bites! Am I paying $1 per bite? Seriously, just charge more and give a bit more. Cut real thin Korean Bbq Beef was dry w/ burnt on Korean BBQ sauce... Dark Brown colored Chicken Katsu seemed cooked in old oil & tasted like fish.. (Fryer might be used for both Fish/ shrimp & chicken???) If you have fried Katsu before, oil tends to go bad from over use & Katsu will tend to turn darker !! or Oil too hot??? In addition to quality of food, , restrooms seemed to be out of order most of the time on recent visits.. Let me give some advice.. Bring hand sanitizer's, handi wipes, to wash hands before & after ...if u decide to eat there...Upstairs & outside dining available.. Restrooms NOT available??? The Loft used to be the only Hawaiian food place in HB. Then L & L came into town, and most recently Da Hawaiian. I had not been to the Loft in a while, and after I ate, I wish I had not returned. Unfortunately, The Loft has gone downhill. The fried chicken doesn't have much marinade as evidenced by the chicken being too white on the inside. It used to have a nice mirin flavor. In addition, the teri chicken is also not marinated beforehand: Basically grilled chicken w/ teri sauce on top. Additionally, their signature bacon fried rice doesn't have a "wow" factor any more. It also has a lot less bacon. Lastly, they don't have mahi mahi or salmon on the menu any longer: Weak!!! I won't be coming back here, (or L & L) for Hawaiian food any longer. Service was friendly when I placed my catering order and when I picked it up! That helps my family want to keep going there. The island style chicken is the favorite and I wished I had ordered more of that and less of the beef. The beef lasted as leftovers forever! I had ordered that as 1/4 tray but could have done just fine with the 1/6 because the meat is thin and layered. The bacon fried rice is soo flavorful and of course the macaroni hits the spot too. My friends and I went here because one of our friends went to Vegan Nirvana, which is a couple of doors down, and we didn't want vegan food. The Loft reminds me of L&Ls! It was good, but it wasn't the best Hawaiin food or food in general. We each got a lunch special: smaller than the regular entree size, doesn't come with macaroni salad, but does come with a drink. It's still a huge amount of food! There's an overwhelming amount of cabbage salad, and I don't know if this is a regular thing for them, but there are uncooked ramen bits in it here and there. They're not completely dry because the dressing of the cabbage salad gets on it, but I was still confused. I tried my friend's teriyaki chicken and it was alright--nothing special. I got the island style chicken lunch special. I'm not sure what makes it "island style" but I'm assuming it's the fact that it, in a way, has a sweeter taste to it? It doesn't taste like regular fried chicken. Regardless, it was pretty tasty. The cashier was nice! We didn't explore the whole place, but downstairs is where you order and I guess the whole "loft" name comes into play when you go upstairs. First and last time .... This was the saltiest burnt food I think I've ever had. The Korean bbq beef was horrible it was burnt and they tried to bury the fact with their sauce. The chicken was just as burnt as you can see. I'm all for some char but this was on another level. And for $17 ... ha not worth a single penny. I've never had food this bad. One of my BFFs have been telling me about this place. She's Japanese with Hawaiian roots so I knew I could trust her taste. We came in and she wanted a few dishes that she loved. BBQ Char Siu Chicken - 4.5 Stars Asian style BBQ chicken that's sweet and savory and has a hint of honey. Served with Chinese hot mustard. - The chicken was amazingly SUPER TENDER and juicy. Nothing like I've ever had before. This is her FAVE dish. I can def see why now. MUST TRY everyone. 02. Korean BBQ Beef - 3.5 Stars Thin strips of tri-tip marinated in a flavorful sweet and slightly spicy sauce then grilled over an open flame. - This was not my fave dish, I'm not a huge fan of anything Teriyaki at all. The sauce I thought as a bit too sweet and a lil on the chewy side. It's much better than other teriyakis but still not my fave. 03. Island Style Fried Chicken - 4.5 Stars Our island-inspired version of fried chicken - juicy chicken nuggets dipped in a sweet, secret home-style ginger marinade and deep fried to a golden brown. - I like the LOFT's version so much better than Da Hawaiian Kitchen's version. If you do one thing at this place, order the fried chicken. Teriyaki chicken is delicious as well. It's modern Hawaiian food, so they have a full menu of Hawaii favorites and it's as close as you can get to authentic. Nothing beats being in Hawaii eating teriyaki chicken or kalua pork beachside though, but for a fast casual place, this will do. This place may be busy during the day, but we came on a Sunday evening and it's not too busy. Service is great, and they even had Lilo and Stitch playing in the background. With all the "Hawaiian" food establishments in the OC, it is easy to forget that there is one that has been here as long as I can remember. In days gone by, I used to sit upstairs inside the small restaurant called The Loft. It is still here and that is a true testament that their hawaiian food is second to none. We craved being back in the "islands", so next best thing is to skip all the other hawaiian food places and come back to The Loft. Patrons were waiting outside and we wondered how long it would be as some were pacing back and forth waiting. Undaunted we got our PPE mask on as the signage on the front door requested, and made it inside. It hasnt changed, the stairs to go upstairs is still there. Time to order from a very busy board. The missus came for teri chicken plate and I opted for the Kalua Pork Plate. It is take out, so we added 1/2 Chinese Chicken Salad to bring home as well. The bill was quickly handled with a credit card. We waited and saw the other patrons one by one getting their orders brought to them. Nice gesture as this relieves from having a traffic jam at the front door. It was our turn and we got the bags checked and ready to go. At home we opened our plates and wow, the containers were filled to the top. All came with white rice, topped with chicken and in my case a full helping of that salty and porky and smoky shredded a pua a (Kalua Pork! A heaping portion of the crunchy noodle in the cabbage salad, a side of a fairly tasty mac salad and of course the teri sauce. This was good teri sauce. We liked the our food selections and had plenty of it. We will eat our Chicken Salad later. It was great being brought back memories of The Loft, and a great choice for our Hawaiian Food craving. read more

I went on a Saturday at around 11:30 am. I was craving a loco moco, so I thought I would give this place a try. For $14, it better be good. The interior was dirty. It took almost 20 minutes to get my food and there was only 1 other person there who was already eating. I took it to go. I live 6 minutes away. The rice was mushy. The Mac salad was loaded with mayo, too much salt, and weird tough bites of meat (shredded chicken? Tuna?) IDK. I couldn't tell so I stopped eating it. I was starving hungry, so I dove into the meat, gravy, egg and when I put it in my mouth I was hugely disappointed. Maybe I needed another bite. Nope. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. Definitely not a Rainbow loco. There were 2 huge patties of meat, but no seasoning and way overdone. Super tough. The egg was also overdone. Gravy was super salty. Maybe they were trying to make up for lack of seasoning in the meat? And the rice was just mush. Maybe leftovers from the day before? I couldn't even eat it. Seriously major bum out. I stuck it in the fridge and my husband fed the meat & egg leftovers to the dogs. I try to eat local and support my local small business, but I will not be going back to this establishment. It's a bit on the pricier end, but to be fair I do make a substitution/upgrade. The Kalua Pork here is not dry like in most other Hawaiian places. Definitely my go to Hawaiian place compared to L&L and Aloha chains. After some time, I got up to check my order and saw that the stairs was already blocked off, signifying that the upstairs was already closed! The place closes at 7 pm and I sat down around 6 pm. Good thing I checked for my order! Else, they would not have given it to me. Why would they close the upstairs an hour before they close? This place is great, if you can ever eat there. They close at 6, so unless you want to have an early dinner while the sun is out it basically isn't an option. Over the weekend, I was at a Boat Parade party in Huntington Beach and they had Hawaiian food catered from The Loft! I did not know initially where it was from and just had to ask because this was some good food! Unfortunately, (but at no fault of the restaurant's) the food was not as "fresh" or hot as we would have liked because it was an outdoors event and by the time the hosts picked it up, brought it home, set it up, party started, and we ate, it was kinda cold. BUT we were still able to enjoy the most of it! The catering included the following: Beef - I think it was a teriyaki sort of flavor, (again coldness cause the flavor to kind of mellow out). The beef was cut into strips and it was tender and sweet! Fried Chicken - wow this was some damn good fried chicken!! Big pieces of boneless chicken, thin crispy batter, and somewhat sweet like a pineapple-honey seasoning! It definitely did not need a sauce but a honey drizzle would be a good addition! macaroni salad - I usually stay completely away from macaroni salad, but pounce on potato salad when it comes to Hawaiian or Asian-esque meals. I figured why not, let's try this mac salad. And guess what - it was great! Creamy, pasta was soft, and good flavors! fried rice - this was actually the disappointment of the night, and again, it could be because it was cold by the time we ate it, but it just seemed to lack flavor, lack ingredients (veggies, scrambled eggs, etc) and the texture was kinda of mushy, as if it was overcooked.
