The Marshal has always been one of those on my bucket list. However, the experience is a little bit disappointed. There is more than one problems in their Hashed Short Rib with Poached Eggs: (1) the timing of poached eggs is not correct. It tasted not soft at all, instead very coarse. (2) short rib is not fresh and there is no seasoning at all. The taste is below their standard and my expectations. read more

Thanks Yelpers for finding this little gem. Visiting from California and got a seat at the bar otherwise the small place was packed. This place serves up fresh local ingredients, started with the beet salad with goat cheese which was a nice simple dish. Topped it off with the special, pork medallion stuffed with cranberries and walnuts then wrapped in bacon. Very tasty just a tad overlooked and a little dry. Warning in advance: Make a reservation or wait in front the door so that you can grab a seat right when the restaurant opens. Everything is farm-to-table here. The owner, who is also the main chef, welcomed us and was a great host for our group. The chicken salad, rib hash, and frittata were all delightful--I must admit that the chicken salad was my favorite of the three. The apples, fresh greens, and crunch walnuts added the right amount of acidity to the perfectly cooked chicken with its savory crispy skin. Surprisingly, the hash was not overly seasoned; the potatoes and rib were addicting (I absolutely enjoyed the minced potatoes and rib that melted in my mouth). The sheriff must've not been in the office... Because the Marshal was definitely slacking off last weekend. My bf's friend was in town and we needed to find a brunch place within walking distance of Penn Station. The Marshal had decent reviews and the wait wasn't terrible. We were quoted 30 minutes and got a table outside within 15. Then it all kinda went downhill. We sat for about ten minutes before anyone greeted us with water. Finally a server came out and we dove right into entree ordering. It was super awkward though because the server sat down on the bench with us, claiming he was tired of standing all day. My bf's friend actually had to scoot down to make room for him at our table. It was just uncomfortable and slightly unprofessional while he scribbled on his pad. All that aside, there was no excuse for the wait. We each ordered an entree and after waiting about 30 minutes, the sever finally came over to check in on us, letting us know we were right up. My bf ordered a biscuit then to hold him over in the meantime. 15 minutes later (45 since ordering), we finally got our food served by someone else completely. My plaid hash had one perfectly poached egg, the second with a hard yolk, the friend didn't get his side of bacon, and my bf's biscuit was nowhere to be found. We asked for replacements / the remainder of what we ordered, hot sauce, and it was a good five minutes before everything was served and ready to go. I feel bad for the woman helping us because we were already a little irritated and she wasn't even our server but was doing what she could to make everything better. Our actual server totally dropped the ball. Food wise, everything actually tasted okay. My hash had a nice herby undertone, although it was fairly one dimensional. Adding tabasco helped. The duck bacon was okay, and I wouldn't recommend the up-charge if you're going to substitute (see below). The other dishes were also tasty, although the biscuit was truly incredible. Fluffy and buttery, the preserves and butter were the perfect pairing. The bill was the nail on the coffin. I wanted to substitute duck bacon for the regular bacon on my hash entree and the server mentioned it'd be a few dollars extra. I should've asked, but I just assumed it'd be $2, maybe $3. The bill showed a $4 charge for duck bacon. I get it, duck bacon might be expensive, but this is why I was annoyed. Our friend ordered a side of duck bacon in addition to his entree: it was $8 for about 5 1/2 pieces of duck bacon. I only got 2 slices of duck bacon at $4. Not only was the per piece cost way more than the side, I wasn't even getting it in addition to the entree, I was substituting something that was already supposed to be included! The math really doesn't add up and in my opinion a little unacceptable. (I know it's only a couple dollars, but it was the principle of things and it didn't even taste that good...). Small cozy rustic place perfect for a date night or family dinner. The food here is like an elevated version of home cooked meals. Fresh farm to table means fresh ingredients and fresh always tastes better. I had the chicken and was told that the recipe was the chef's moms and it was really excellent! Food looks good but is it? No. Ordered a coffee and a tomato basil mozzarella frittata. First off, my coffee came with some white bits in it which I still do not know what to make of. Perhaps cookie crumbs? Dandruff from the waiter? Anyways thankfully they switched this out for a new cup that looked pitch black - the only way I like my coffee to be. The frittata was incredibly bland and lacked any flavors. Would it hurt to put some spices.. salt.. anything?! I drowned mine in hot sauce which arrived when I was half way done with my food. The "thick cut" bacon is just normal breakfast sandwich bacon which they only give two pieces of by the way. Service was incredibly slow for a half-full restaurant. For example- the hot sauce which took half a meals time to arrive. Would I come back? I went for brunch on a Saturday with a friend. She had been there before and talked up the biscuits and jams/butters so I was excited to try it. They were a little too dry for my taste and they were crumbling in my hand when I picked them up or tried to put one of the spreads on them. We each ordered a pizza as well. I got the bacon and egg pizza and my friend got the heirloom caprese pizza. Hers was basically a pesto pizza with a spring salad on it lol. I felt like my pizza was just okay. We both got the autumn lemonade cocktails, which we liked. Pretty average brunch. The staff is very kind and attentive. What a horrible place. Forty dollars for a mediocre meatloaf. Actually 'mediocre' is being generous; the average home cook makes a better meatloaf than this. Why on earth did I order such a monstrosity? It was described on the menu as 'stuffed with' a variety of vegetables and blue cheese. You get a huge heavy expanse of bad meatloaf, then a few bites of veg and a truly minute amount of blue cheese, just a speck, then another huge expanse of meatloaf. Sorry Marshal, that is not was is meant by something being 'stuffed with' something. What else? A waitress who doesn't have basic information about items on the menu (she didn't know, for example, what kind of cheese the vegetables 'gratin' came with). But what's really disgusting here is, you pay forty dollars for a bad meatloaf, and you don't even get bread with your meal. What a disgrace. There's bread on the menu--get this--for an extra SEVEN DOLLARS. How nice. Sorry, you are beneath contempt. Bread comes with dinner in decent restaurants. Full stop. The atmosphere? You sit outside at a wobbly metal table and look at the traffic on tenth avenue. Wow. Oh, the vegetable side dishes cost ten dollars--more of course with tax and tip--and waitress actually tried to encourage me to get one because 'they're kinda small and the meatloaf doesn't come with anything.' read more

Took a chance on this narrow farm to table spot in Hell's Kitchen for a pre-theatre meal. Our experience was absolutely top notch, in fact every single element of our time there was exemplary. The restaurant is small as other reviews state. I am a large man and was more than comfortable at my table and the place was full. I would not recommend sitting at any of the bar seating if you are large or infirm as they are tight and the table space for food is very shallow. They also had some outside seating. The service was fantastic with a completely attentive staff. Every course of our meal was prepared expertly and was flavorful and beautifully presented. The deviled egg appetizer was an innovative twist on an old timey favorite. Everything is prepared on a huge woodfired oven and we had the meatloaf which I thought was the best I'd ever tasted, and a monkfish special with perfect risotto. The Sweet potato and kale side dish is a must order. Our deserts (maple smores and peach cobbler) were outstanding. This was a first class meal and I can't wait to come in from the far reaches of the NYC sphere again to eat there! This is a good choice for non-touristy pre-theatre. Made a rez online for my husband and a friend visiting from CA. The 3 of us were seated at a 4 top towards the back. Keep in mind, this is a warm, cozy, small restaurant so really only about 6 tables down. Our waiter greeted us promptly and was attentive & professional. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. We found it randomly when searching for organic restaurants last year. It is absolutely amazing when it's cold out. It's tiny but that what makes it very cozy. They recently started taking reservations. The bar can literally fit only 3 people. All the staff is fantastic, witty, knowledgeable and very helpful. They have awesome drink menu! Hot apple cider with bourbon was super comforting in cold weather. The restaurant was very busy on Monday night. We had to wait for our reservation for at least 40 min but it's worth the wait!!! We started with Burrata, deviled eggs, the brussel sprout salad and the meatballs. All were delicious. For our entrees we had the chicken, the meatloaf, the short run and the lamb shank with three sides of kale au gratine, cheese cauliflower and the mushrooms. We had a few bottles of the most delicious local wine from Long Island! And the desert was the perfect finisher - super rich chocolate something! It was chill and amazing! Definitely not my favourite brunch place. It is very blah-- My friend and I ordered the lobster frittata and goat cheese frittata to share. It is very mundane and tasteless, while the sausage and bacon were too salty. The biscuits which the waiter recommended were dry. To be fair, the jam is good. The usher was not friendly at all either. She told me to wait by the door. it took her forever to come, only to tell me to wait at the bar bc my friend hasn't showed. We had a reservation, I arrived just on time, the place was not busy (so many empty tables) - I do not see why I cannot be seated. I will unabashedly say that The Marshal is one of THE best restaurants, bar none, in Hell's Kitchen. With every bite of every course, the flavor, herbality and freshness nodded to the chef and owner's passion for creating delicious and local Farm-to-Table food. Chicken Liver Pate: Simple, yet creamy and decadent. Wood Oven French Loaf: Like European restaurants, bread is not provided gratuit. However, this bread is totally worth paying for. It comes out nice and warm from the oven, crusty on the outside and tender on the inside. The in-house churned butter is light and airy, with a light flavor of the fresh cream from whence it came. Braised Lamb Shank: No knife necessary - this generous portion of lamb shank is so tender is practically melts off of the bone. And that parsnip turnip puree it rests on - MY GOD is it DELICIOUS. I can't even fathom what the kitchen did to make it taste so good but scrumptious, lick your plate yummy aren't enough words to describe the greatness of this simple sounding side. Rag Beef (Special): This dish was just as delicious as it was unique. A rag is soaked in a red wine and herb mixture, than wrapped around a piece of filet allow it to marinate. The filet is then oven-roasted with the rag still on it, which is then removed prior to serving. The amount of flavor and herbality that they infused into that filet was INSANE. I love the out of the box preparation, which resulted in a wildly unique dish. Sweet Potato & Kale au Gratin: Layers of thinly slice sweet potatoes held together with thick melty slices of delicious cheese - what's not to like! Kale was certainly an afterthought, but I will undoubtedly get this side upon every return to the Marshal. Roasted Smashed Yukon Gold Potatoes: Roughly smashed, add duck fat, done deal. Roasted Cauliflower: A simple, well executed side, but nothing to write home about. Its not often that I truly desire to return to a restaurant, but with a continually changing menu and wide array of delicious offerings, I will happily return to taste more and more of what The Marshal has to offer. read more

Midwestern Gal: very nice evening! I had the special which was a monk fish risotto. The risotto was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. I know monk fish is supposed to be more steaky than flakey but it was just a little too tough. That said, the food was delicious. The freshly baked bread was AMAZING. I would highly recommend getting a loaf with the homemade butter. Overall, the experience was wonderful and I would recommend this place to my friends, including all of you yelpers! Midwestern Guy: Stereotypically (being from the midwest and all), I ordered the meatloaf. What a great decision! The meat was cooked perfectly, and had a lot of delicious flavor. The tomato sauce on top was the perfect amount of tangy and spicy, and the loaf was stuffed with squash and spinach. I would highly recommend ordering this dish! As the gal noted above, the fresh bread is a perfect appetizer, as it is warm and flavorful. Their homemade butter was good enough to be Amish made! My new favorite lunch spot! A hidden gem in Hell's Kitchen for sure. First, the Marshal is super trendy with a cozy ambiance that makes it hard to get up and return to work. But that is not the best part, the best part is the food. The portions are very generous. My favorite is the Wood Oven "Grilled" Cheese NY cheddar with Berkshire bacon and duck fat potato chips. The most amazing grilled cheese I have ever had in my life, the bread melts in your mouth and although I am not a potato chips fan, I am a huge fan of these. The beef stew was hearty and flavorful. A couple arrived after us (I dont want to assume they did not have a reservation). A couple sitting inside was then sat on the table outside that had just been vacated. The couple who arrived after us was also sat on that table (they had to share) and then I waited for about 10 minutes..no one came out. So i went to 44 1/2 next door. I really wanted to LOVE this place. I like the space. But the three people who were with me convinced me it was a small space and overall, our meal just wasn't so good. Cocktails each had a "flowery" taste - not good for a Manhattan. Clam chowder had great big clams - wow - but not a ton of flavor. Salt and pepper helped. Macaroni and cheese had apple and blue cheese - but not enough. Signature meat loaf was mushy and - again - not a ton of flavor. Brussel sprout salad drenched in sauce. Cute spot but was disappointed. A) The hostess needs to learn two things 1) Tell the truth. Don't tell me a table is reserved and then 2 minutes later give it to another couple that walks in (they said they didn't have a reservation, I heard the conversation), that just looks bad, very bad. 2) Don't ask someone how the food is when it was just set down on the table, wait until the customers actually take a bite first. The staff need to get it together. The restaurant wasn't even full (not even half full) and it took almost 30 minutes for the appetizers to come out and then another 30 minutes for the main course. Any apologies from the waiter? Nope. And also, apparently they only refill your water if you ask.. several times. I'll pass on going here again, I didn't find it all that special. Review #101 for the Marshal gets a well-deserved five stars from me. See, back in January I was visiting NYC for the first time in my life, timed with my 30th birthday. I wanted something awesome, but not tacky/touristy. I wanted to find somewhere special for dinner that had enough New York about it while at the same time suiting me and my interests down to a tee. I also needed somewhere affordable enough that my family would still want to come to dinner with me... I spent weeks trawling through reviews. From looking at NYC large scale, to zooming right in to areas we were staying in and searching there. I asked friends who'd been before. I asked locals once we were in town. I fussed, I fretted, I angsted. And then I found the Marshal. It's a wanky locavore menu at its finest, but do you know what I love? A WANKY LOCAVORE MENU. I called up on the morning of my birthday to see if I could still get a reservation--risky business. I was disabled with a broken ankle at the time and mentioned this when I called up. The sass I got back about a birthday cake stripper for the cripple... made me certain I'd found what I was looking for. Charlie and his staff were all delightfully sassy. The space is small, but I'd rather use words like "intimate" and "cosy", because that's exactly how we felt on a chilly January evening. Low lighting and a sweet soundtrack set the scene and we made zero effort to rush ourselves through an amazing meal. The menu is updated literally every day. Make sure you start with the bread and butter, because the secret ingredient in the butter is crack. My sister asked to be sure and while it wasn't confirmed verbally, the waitress's eyes told another story. We got a whole table full of deliciousness for mains, and I was particularly fond of the land-locked salmon I ordered (and the story I got to go with it) though there wasn't a single average meal between us. I even got a birthday candle to blow out in my apple and rhubarb crumble dessert. I should have left this review a lot sooner. It looks like the rest of the world is in on the secret now, but good for Charlie & co--they deserve it. Perfect dinner, perfect venue. Tables on top of tables. But enough of the bad... The good...the great...the FOOD! Despite the tight quarters the food rocked. Suggestions (since I went with 3 other people and sampled some goodies : Wood Oven Roasted Meatloaf...melt in your mouth goodness...all I would request is a little more well-done on the outside...otherwise perfecto. Wood Braised Short Ribs...so tender and moist...fall off the bone quality...seasoned well...delicious. Chicken Breast...liked it a lot...goat cheese and herb stuffed added tons of flavor. Sides(3 for $21) Sweet Potato and Kale Au Gratin, Bacon Roasted Fingerling Potato's and the Acorn Squash...all we a nice compliment to our meals... My favorite new restaurant in NYC, and I sure hope no one finds out because I want it to be "my place." I live in the neighborhood, and Hell's Kitchen badly needed this farm to table locally sourced restaurant to add to its many offerings. It is now the one place I take everyone who visits me because it's that good, and no one has been disappointed. The atmosphere is industrial and Williamsburg / hipster inspired. I love the brunch with fritatas, omelets, and fresh bacon. The drinks also are excellent and substantial. The happy hour cocktails are unique and a good deal. But dinner- wow. Everything I've had here blew me away, and I'll keep coming back for more. The chocolate sundae dessert with homemade vanilla ice cream is basic but perfect. I love everything about The Marshal. It's mind blowing to me how this establishment got four stars!!.. Ok as soon as I walked in with my girlfriend we rudely rushed in. My waiter was super rude. Sorry to say but he seemed like a super unenthusiastic I'm better then normal society hipster. Every question we asked he would give us a pause and a deep breath while looking in another direction as if we weren't there. For instance My girlfriend: Hi what would you recommend?
