The Monk's is my go-to for butter chicken and chicken tikka masala in Carmel. I highly recommend their manchow soup, their tandoori chicken momos, and their Monks fries for soups/starters. My appointment was just a mile away from Monk's and I decided to stop for lunch. The interior is attractive with several 4-top tables with some with booths. The buffet is in the back within a separate area. There is lots of 4-tops in front of the very large buffet. I was greeted by a nice gentleman who ask if I wanted to try the weekly buffet (afforable $14.00 Mon-Fri 11:00 - 3:30) but I wanted to order off the main menu. I had checked out the vast menu on-line so I knew exactly what I wanted to try. The menu is extensive and there appears to be something for everyone. I selected the delicious Sweet Corn Soup with Veggie Spring Rolls as appetizers. The soup arrived incredibly hot and is served with sweet corn and other ingredients in a steaming broth. The Veggie Spring Rolls comes with 4 rolls and a mild, creamy dip. My entree was Butter Masala Chicken with Garlic Naan. This dish is also served with Paneer and Lamb. The Garlic Naan has 4 generous size slices. It was wonderful with the Masala. Unfortunately, all my dishes arrived at the same time. It didn't really give me an opportunity to enjoy everything hot as if they were served separately as Appetizers. My Butter Masala and Naan was luck warm to cold by the time I finished the highly recommended Sweet Corn Soup. It didn't disappoint. The 4 Spring Rolls were filled with finely grated veggies and perfectly cooked. I ordered the soup mild but the Butter Masala was supposed to be medium heat. I'm not sure if they accidentally made the Masala mild because it was missing any heat or much spice. It was good with the Garlic Naan but I missed the spice and heat. The pastry case, as you walk in, looks amazing. I had to try one of the pastries after seeing the case.The pastry was 3 layers of delicious, light chocolate mousse between layers of a chocolate cake. I would order again and probably end up taking most home as today. If you have a chance to check-out the buffet it has a nice selection of different types of Indian favorites. I couldn't actually see all that was available as several customers were filling their plates. There was a nice crowd by the buffet and everyone seemed pleased with the selection. I would say the service could be improved and I deducted a star because of him never checking on me once after taking my order. I wasn't surprised with prices as they are typical for most Indian restaurants now. It is a little pricey but I basically have another meal for later. Food was great, if you're doing carry out it's a must have.... Unfortunately we decided to dine in. There was maybe 5 other tables in the place (pretty empty) we were seated quickly, and he came and took our orders.... After about 10 min we asked "Hey can we have our drinks?" Which we thought were getting made in the back (the mango drink).... Nope out of the cooler less than 10 feet from us. About 10 min later they bring everything.... Momos are fantastic - chicken tikka especially, they have a ton of flavor and have always been well prepared in our 5+ visits. Don't be afraid to try one of the traditional dishes - they have way more variety than many other restaurants. The biryani is great, and I've loved the Gully and Ghee Roast appetizers. The Jalfrezi, Chettinad and Rogan Josh are other personal favorites - absolute flavor bombs. A lot of restaurants tone down the spice for western palates, but the sauces here are swimming in heady aromas and flavors. I enjoyed the sauce and the chicken was tender. The lamb vindaloo I got because it is highly rated and popular. However I was not impressed. It was too salty and i could not eat it. I don't recommend this dish. I told them about it and had it changed to lamb chops and WOW this is the dish to get me me tell you. Very well seasoned. NOT DRY. Pairs beautifully with green sauce. The food here was SPECTACULAR. The momos were filled with meat. The fries bursting with flavor. The maggi spring rolls had the perfect crunch and gave me the maggi satisfaction I needed. Establishment should make more of an effort to make a nice presentation for customers as I was the one to align the momos and spring rolls on my plate to get a nice shot of the food. When they arrived at the table the green chutney was hanging for dear life on the plate with the momos. I was served mango lassi (which was delish by the way) in a to go cup when my neighbors were served theirs in a mason jar. Having seen some neighborhood buzz about this little spot on Carmel's west Main Street, we stopped in at peak dinner time on a Saturday night. Although there was a nice crowd, we had no problem getting a table. There's a little bit of mixed messaging because there is a QR code on the table that seems to indicate you're supposed to order that way but we were grateful when a server came to our table. Most of the food was unfamiliar to us, but I had done a little research on the menu ahead of time, so we had some idea what we wanted to order. My dining companion enjoyed an entree called Chicken Manchuria that came with a small bowl of fluffy long grain white rice. I chose an appetizer (for my meal) called Chicken tandoori momas which basically looked like orange Japanese gyoza (dumplings). They were very flavorful, especially when dipped in the delicious cilantro sauce. I ordered medium spice and it was not very spicy at all, however my dining companion ordered medium spice on his dish and it was spicy. Not too spicy to enjoy, but not consistent with mine. Based on another person's recommendation we ordered the naan (bread), which was so light and fluffy. The garlic was subtle, and the basket did not come with any sauces, which was fine. It seems like they might still be working out some issues, but the men who seemed to be running the place had a good attitude of service. I think the outdoor seating area will be very nice once the weather warms up. The restaurant seems to face Main Street (131st) but there is parking out back, and most people came through that back door. We were offered a discount if we paid with cash. read more

My partner and I tried this place for the first time recently. I was very excited as I'd been wanting to go for a while. We were seated quickly, and that's about the only positive about the service. I don't expect servers to constantly be grinning from ear to ear or putting on a grand show, but our server very clearly didn't want to be there, and we had a hard time understanding him because he spoke so softly. It also took a while for him to come back after we were seated to take our order. My partner got the buffet, and I got the Chinese chili chicken off the menu. I thought my meal was quite tasty and would definitely eat it again. My partner was less enthused about the buffet - acceptable but not superb in his opinion. Our server never came back to check on us. I wanted a box for mine but didn't feel like chasing someone down for it, and we were on a time crunch and needed to get going, so we left. The restaurant was bustling. People also patiently waited for tables. At that moment, we knew the food was going to be amazing. They seated guests as promptly as they could, and we finally got our order. We ordered something extra as we were about to leave, an Indian beer I was curious to try- Bira. The host included it with our order, no charge, and kindly saying, "enjoy". I should mention that the restaurant itself is stylish, spacious, and clean looking. On the ride back to our hotel, the aroma of the food was incredible. We finally get to the hotel and pull everything out of the bags. We took my parents to Monk's after hearing good things about their indo Chinese menu. When we arrived, the service was on point, and food was good too! However, it went downhill towards the end as they got busier and they gave parts of our order to another table. Just visited The Monk's a newer restaurant in Carmel. Don't let the strip mall location throw you this place is great. They call the food fusion and there's an extensive selection of primarily Indian and Chinese dishes. Tandoori, Desi Tacos, Noodles, Fried Rice, Biryanis and more. I went with a group so we tried lots of things starting with multiple appetizers. All were very flavorful and the naan is delicious.
