We ordered espresso martinis to start and they were perfect to get evening rolling. I need to shoutout our waitress, Lily! Her energy was amazing and she was super engaging, laughing at all of our corny jokes. When we were stuck between the petit filet and the burger, she gave us that LOOK. That burger look. SAY LESS LILY! We ended up getting market vegetables, Wagyu Beef Tartare, the Kaspian Potato, and the Burger N9. As I was taking a video of the wagyu beef tartare for tiktok (yeah im that guy), an employee came up to me and said no flash inside the restaurant. I felt terrible. Who am I? I went on a Saturday and it was busy but not like a dive, it was more sit down vibe. We sat at the bar and almost immediately got attitude, maybe it was because the bartender had a bad night, but for the price it was unacceptable. If you're just going for a quick drink with a friend than i suggest you check it out on a Saturday. Monday night I found it quiet and even more snobbish, the bartender was a young lurch that wasn't friendly at all. I could take it or leave it. A downtown version of Bemelman's, located in the old Acme space. I was super excited to snag a reservation at The Nines (7pm on a Monday), and the vibes were great. They have a piano player every night from 6-midnight, and he played hit songs on the piano. It was wonderful! The service was good but not great- nothing memorable there. This is definitely a restaurant where you come to see and be seen. I HAD to order the caviar potato ($100), but boy was it good. I've heard mixed reviews on the food here, but I knew the caviar would slap. My boyfriend got the steak tartare and said it was good. The only disappointing event of the night were the martinis. This is a space that is mostly drinks/cocktails, so I had high expectations, but the dirty martini was one of the worst I've had in NY. I would be back for that caviar potato and the nice atmosphere, but make no mistake, this place can't hold a candle to Bemelman's. read more

The service was the worst ive ever had, so pushy and rushed to order (and pushed to order more). Before our seating time they literally called us on the phone unprompted and told us that each person was "expected to order multiple appetizers, an entree and dessert" and if they "saw we were using the table for something else" they would "take it away." I wish I could make this up. I sat in the parlor which was supposed to be for cocktails and appetizers. There were four people in my party. Three of us got entrees, I got a small plate and two drinks. Everyone else was also drinking. And the waitstaff acted like we were wasting their time. Who do these people think they are? I will never come here again and will tell everyone who will listen how overrated it is. If you want a real, vibey, classy, instagrammable but actually authentic jazz bar, go to Zinc four blocks away. Service at Zinc was incredible and the energy was amazing. It was incredibly expensive - we just did drinks and even a glass of the cheapest wine was $18. However, they do bring you a snack of olives, popcorn, chips which I thought was really nice. Fun, cute, expensive! We have truly entered the $20-30+ cocktail era. Inflation sucks! The decor is wonderful and it feels really intimate, perfect for date-night. The staff are super friendly and they absolutely don't mind if you just wanna order one drink and eat the free snacks while enjoying the live music! Don't feel obligated to ball the heck out, unless you want to of course. If you order a martini, it comes with a "sidecar" - the excess in a little jug that you can use to top off your drink. LOVE that. Every table gets free popcorn, olives, and potato chips. The olives are really tasty and they'll refill the snacks if you ask. Obviously the live music is the big selling point. They acoustics are pretty good so it doesn't sound too loud even when the place is packed. However, some of their pianists get a little carried away with their foot tapping - more like foot stomping! If you're sitting close to the piano, you might have to deal with some pretty loud stomps. All in all, it's a good time and I'll be coming back. Extremely disappointed. I tried to go here a few months ago and it was closed for a private event (no notice online). This time, we checked the dress code online and followed it, yet were still turned away after the manager greeted us, said the host would help us, and then the host took 5+ minutes to look up from her iPad. My friend was in a hoodie for the cold (intended to be removed) and I was in a dress. The host asked us if we were there for dinner or drinks and we answered drinks. It wasn't until then that the host brought up dress code and said we weren't allowed in. It felt like her manager used her as a scapegoat and also as if she was reciting a script and not adapting to a situation (ie: we're wearing layers because of the zero degree weather, we will take off these layers and be wearing clothing appropriate for the environment). To be treated this way at 5:30 PM on a Monday in an empty establishment felt elitist and unnecessary. Plenty of other places in the city will appreciate our business more. read more

Visited with loved ones during the holidays and it was everything I anticipated and more. Service was lovely from the beginning when we walked from the doorman to our waitress and some. My party went for after dinner drinks and even though the time was late, we did not feel rushed at all. It was a nice, calm, and quaint ambience that felt luxurious with the red theme. I enjoyed the drinks we ordered and everything tasted perfect. Our server was amazing and found out we were visiting for pleasure and gave us some additional goodies (pens and postcards) which was very kind. She was also very attentive and friendly towards us. I had left my scarf at the restaurant and by the time I realized where I left it; I was already across the country back home. After emailing them about my problem, they worked promptly and very kindly to ship back my scarf with no complaints at all! The Nines interior is absolutely stunning. As soon as you walk in you feel transported into a another decade. The hostess was nice and so was the wait staff. We were seated in the main dining area on the booth. When we sat down they gave us a trio of on the house snacks including an olive assortment, popcorn and salt and vinegar chips which were a nice touch. They brought us another round of these snacks later in the night which was welcome because we didn't get food. While the interior was nice the place felt cramped and it was extremely loud. We had very minimal space between the two tables next to us and I kept thinking if they just removed one table from this strip it was be much more comfortable. The drinks were simple and good, however, extremely expensive for non-fancy or mixologist drinks. My husband ordered a Manhattan and the No. 9 which were straight alcohol and he said we're good but for simple drinks not worth the price tag. I ordered The Nines, while it was tasty, but not very boozy at all nor was it mind blowing and for a $26 price tag I would expect it to be one of the best drinks I have ever had. The second drink I got was The Shaken which was straight liquor and what I was looking for. Truthfully, although the drinks were pricey it's clear you're paying for the ambiance. The pianist was going when we were there as well. However, due to how packed in the tables are it wasn't the easiest to hear him play. Also, for the type of atmosphere and decor of The Nines I would have expected the pianist to play music was more classic and not Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi' living on prayer and Madonna's material girl. A bit odd. Regardless, It was nice to feel like you were transported to a different time in NYC at The Nines, but I think it's a try it once place to check it off the list, as there are places throughout the city that have just as good of an atmosphere (if not better) that certainly also have better drinks for less money. read more

The nines offer a slice of old New York despite being new. A red velvet bar and lounge bar welcomes the visitor with a medley of great piano classics sans cheesy adaptations. The bar experience excelled our expectations in presentation and attention. The dirty martinis with cheese olives came out perfect and an ice glass chilled the remaining libation that couldn't fit in the glass (very nice touch). I made a reservation with a friend that was visiting nyc, and I woke up on the day of the reservation with very sick (on the day of birthday, I should mention). I called to attempt to reschedule or cancel, and the host said they would not accommodate discussion over cancellation fees over the phone. He was incredibly rude and also hung up in my face. I called back to say that my friends would still be going to the reservation, and he accused me of lying over "having covid." Worthy to note that the word "covid" was never even mentioned (or alluded to) in the previous conversation, and I was in reality feeling sick due to a chronic illness. Receiving a condescending, disrespectful tone over the phone on my birthday is the opposite of what I wanted--and what any customer deserves. The nines really is not what it used to be, and this service is definitely not worth the sub-par cocktails and conventional piano music. Go to somewhere like monkey bar or the odeon instead for better service (and food). read more

Then you must leave !!! I've never experienced that before anywhere . If you dont bribe the host, he'll give you the worst table. I mean, this place should be reported for its practices. We came from out of town to the nines to celebrate a big birthday. While the ambiance was amazing and the service was fine, what really got me was that in the $40 salmon there was a HAIR. Not only did that ruin the entire meal it was just unappetizing and ruined the vibe of the meal. For such an expensive restaurant this is just quite unacceptable. Unethical Business Practice at The Nines. On 12/2/23 I brought my family to The Nines for dinner. A manager came to our table to recommend a bottle of wine. I stated the features we enjoy in a red wine and the manager suggested three different bottles that she thought we'd like. The bottle that seemed to best align with what we'd like happened to be the most expensive at $350.00. I ordered the bottle. Several minutes later, the manager returned to our table carrying a wine glass containing a taste of wine. She didn't accompany this glass with the opened bottle, so I wondered out loud where, in fact, the sample had come from. The manager offered no meaningful response. Not wanting to make a scene, I reluctantly said the taste was fine. The manager left the table and, again, returned several minutes later. This time, she brought a carafe that had been filled with a red wine. And, again, no bottle. I expressed my concern that without seeing that the wine was poured from the bottle I chose, I couldn't be sure what red wine I was drinking. The manager explained that given that space limitation in the dining room, she always opens bottles outside the room. She wouldn't acknowledge the obvious reason I was skeptical. As a result, I feel I was duped in my purchase of an expensive bottle of wine at The Nines. Future customers are warned to be cautious in this restaurant. Given the manager's apparent lack of concern with my concerns, I have a hunch the might not be the first time this has happened at the restaurant. I feel I was the victim of a fraudulent bait-and-switch at The Nines. I won't be back. read more

I had the pleasure of coming to this beautiful cocktail bar over the weekend with my boyfriend for some date night drinks! Reservations are hard to come by and they also have a $100 cancelation fee per person so make sure you only reserve when you know you can come for sure! The entrance of the restaurant is super unassuming but as soon as you enter, it is like you are transported back to what I envision a speakeasy in the 1940s would be. The interior has dim, seductive lighting and all the seats are velvety red with delicate candles and place settings. There is a beautiful grand piano towards the back of the restaurant where someone is playing all night long. The ambiance is what you pay for here - and it is so worth it! Our waitress, who was very friendly, recommended the mushroom pate to us for apps and we each got 2 drinks: the 9s Martini and the Hemingway. The drinks are very strong so well-worth the cost! The mushroom pate was also very tasty. Each table is also served a set of olives, popcorn and salted chips. A very nice gesture and snacking item but the popcorn was stale. I showed up at 5PM to secure walk in seats in the bar, there were about 6 seats open at the bar and I asked if I could sit there and the host along with 3 other hosts all totally perplexed told me no and that that the bar seats were reserved, so I asked if I could sit at the other open seats along the wall (definitely fair game) and was told no they were reserved. Alternatively, The Nines offers a chic, downtown feel of uptown's Bemelmans Bar (which agreeably has become basic sorority central). The cocktails and food menu items are light and perfect for a prime time date spot. The staff and service are incredible.
