It's been quite some time since I last wrote something - the EX and I didn't really go out much, and he silently loathed my writing style (yayyyy), and then to top it all off I had to go and create a charity that helps thousands of children around the country so I figured I'd have to delete that review of my gynecologist for the sake of my professional reputation. And keeping my eye out on what has started to prove itself to be a horrible, horrible dating scene. Masochism is fun! One such adventure took me to The Oaks Tavern, a fun dive bar up in Sherman Oaks with the worst parking situation ever (but unfortunately for all you looking for a way out - still worth going). More specifically, it took me here for a trivia night - Charlie's Trivia Night, Wednesdays from 7:30p - 9:30p. They have a few of them, but I came here for this one. The drinks were dive worthy, and the pizza was, too. It's a fucking dive bar. ENJOY IT. If you want a fancy cocktail go to the arts district you asshole. Personally the combo pizza helped silence my growling stomach, because the brain power I have to use to get half the answers correct is cause for a bite or 20. It's all nostalgic. Nostalgia for a fun, easy, unpretentious evening where you don't feel like you have to wear makeup because doing a double wash with an oil based cleanser and then a cream based cleanser feels like a lot at the end of the night. I went here last week for my friend's birthday and it was so much fun! The staff was so friendly and accommodating and my friend really enjoyed herself. I liked the dark vampy vibe of the place. We got drinks and pizza, and even got to do karaoke. Having the complimentary popcorn was an extra nice touch. read more

This place was vibe. It does seem to attract the younger hipster crowds. Pooped in for a drink after dinner, the since a security guard in-front. He informed us that pretty much all the tables were reserved and that only bar seating or standing was available. It was about 8pm Saturday night... The place isn't that big but does have a cool vibes. They offer karaoke which I believe happens to be every night. It's a full bar and I did noticed that they had pizza. Not sure if it's just that or there's other food available. Crowd was fun singing along with everyone. The bartender, she was sweet and very friendly with the sweetest smile. We went for the Nerdology Trivia Night. All the tables were completely full but one of our friends was able to get there early and snag one. The trivia is very movie-specific so it's difficult if that's not your area of expertise, but fun to watch people show off their knowledge. The speakers were a bit loud, but the questions are put up on the TV screens all around the room, so it's easy to see them. I ordered one of the pizzas and the server was able to guide me to a vegetarian one I could order and add pepperoni to half of, which was super helpful. They are frozen and pre-made, so nothing spectacular, but they're also under $20. And there's free popcorn available for snacking on too, which is fun. read more

This is a "local" spot that you can find regulars at or a new face that is ready to sing and have a good time. Service is ALWAYS friendly. I have yet to have a bad time here. Just wish it was a little bit bigger.. I didn't care for the drinks but the vibes alone are making me go back. Id for sure swing by if youre in the area. Okay neighborhood bar. Not a great place for karaoke, as the waiting time to sing is really long, and the music is so loud, and the patrons are so loud, that you won't even be able to hear yourself. I spent hours here on yelp looking for a fun place to celebrate my birthday and nothing called out to me. Then boom! I called to see what was on the calendar for a Tuesday night and Maurie (sp?), told me about the music open mic! She was so sweet! She sold me on celebrating here with 13 girlfriends. I made a reservation with Joey who runs the open mic & music acts later that night. We had the BEST TIME EVER!!! Ordered a bunch of pizzas for everyone to munch on. It was perfect. Hannah took care of our drink orders & pizzas at the bar. BTW - Her Berry margaritas were delicious. I got to meet Joey after the show. She came over to our table to say hello! The Oaks Tavern is a cool little neighborhood dive bar. It you're a beer drinker this is your spot because they have a vast selection of Craft Beers (16 taps & 20+ bottles). Hannah was the bartender on duty, and she was awesome! When we got there it was fairly empty but as the night went on the place started to fill up and Hannah managed it like a pro. Making drinks and delivering pizza to tables with a friendly smile and cheerful demeanor. I had the JaJa Blackberry Margarita with a sugar rim, and it was tasty - a perfect balance of tart & sweet. One of the cool things about this place, if you want to buy someone a drink they will hand you a drink ticket so the person can redeem it when they are ready for another. In terms of food, they only offer pizza. (Gluten free also available.) Several were ordered for the table - Cheese & Pepperoni. Judging by the crust I'm fairly sure it was frozen pizza. However, it smelled good, and the cheese pizza was tasty. Free popcorn is available too. They also let you bring in food. Our hostess with the mostess brought fresh salad to go along with our pizza and, of course, there was cake! We had such a fun time at Open Mic night. A dozen musicians signed up to perform their music. This provided the perfect backdrop for a birthday gathering. It was Te-see's pizza party and celebration for her birthday! Hannah was our server and bartender! We had fabulous service and a good time. This place conveniently located off the 101 freeway is very popular to meetup in a casual environment. Had an amazing time here on Sunday at their Trivia and Karaoke night! I met up with some friends who had scored a table early right by the stage. I took some time to admire the quirky decor which really felt unique and unlike any bar I've been to. It wasn't super crowded and I was able to order a drink without having to wait for the bartender. I noticed that there were specials and since I love limited time items, I opted for the strawberry margarita. I'm not sure why I thought it would be a blended drink but it was served on the rocks, which was still very refreshing on a hot summer night. It was very affordable at just $11. It was just strong enough while balancing the strawberry syrup. Everyone there was so friendly and the entertainment was superb. Both the trivia and karaoke hosts were fantastic and so engaging. Bonus was that my friend won a free vanilla vodka shot, which I got to try and really enjoyed! Another bonus was the free popcorn which was so fresh and flavorful! Reasonably priced drinks and amazing Karaoke Fridays in this very divey bar in Sherman Oaks! I visited The Oaks Tavern with my friend, who is a regular. We arrived around 8/8:30pm on a Friday. I was able to find street parking right away, but she had some trouble. Karaoke Night was a 5 out of 5. The energy was great. People were having a good time. I also applaud the staff who kicked out a creepy guy who groped a woman while she was on stage singing. He was very drunk and a complete mess! Immediately after it happened, the staff kicked him out. Even when he tried to sneak back in, they got security to escort him out again. Although the staff is amazing, I am knocking down a star because as the night wore on, the crowd started to turn and got grimy. Cigarette smoke filled the bar and the people started to resemble characters in a movie where sour-faced men drown their sorrows over whiskey because their wives left them. All in all, I would come again for karaoke, but would be hesitate to come another time. read more

Normally don't do this but this place is soooooooo fun!!! I've been here a few times but this was my first time on a Saturday and the place was POPPIN! Joey at the bar was so attentive and so kind the whole night and made some killer drinks. Sam created such a fun comfortable vibe for everyone to sing and just have a good time! Loved his energy from the moment I got there. He made personal connections and was very personable with all my friends and I making the singing part even more fun- and not as scary!! Definitely coming back on Saturdays from now on. Sam is definitely my favorite KJ so far from Oaks Tavern. I will say since I'm already here writing this- I did notice one of the female hosts yelling at someone inside the bar on a recent Tuesday that I was here and to me it didn't seem necessary. Came on a Saturday night. Party of two. Bar service was great but we waited an hour and a half for karaoke and still hadn't sang. When we asked the KJ (didn't get his name but it said "Emo"?) he said there were still 15 songs ahead of us. Meanwhile people who had come in after us were singing. Not sure what the order is or what their system is but is it really normal to wait that long? We had also tipped before we even sang. I know it's a weekend but still disappointed honestly. Honestly, hands down, this is probably one of the best bars in the valley.. First and foremost: woman owned and you can tell, it's a quality place where you can have fun and not break the bank to have a good time. Atmosphere 10/10: it's small and quaint, or we can just say intimate and on a busy night you'll definitely get to know your neighbor. The ambiance and decor was great. Drinks: 10/10: nothing (that I ordered) was over $20, unheard of in LA... that's all... quality and quantity is equal... they also have happy hour, so can't go wrong with that. Food 10/10:they got pizza! the gluten free pizza is lowkey better than the regular, and the regular was a solid 10/10 for taste and price.. Not many options, but I mean, we're only ordering pizza to sober up a bit more to drink more, right?? No one needs that many options anyway once you're at that point. As someone who is not a fan of karaoke, this bar definitely has vibes and I've been a regular for a bit now. Last night some loser kept whistling (you know that high pitched whistle that someone might do at a concert) which is so rude to do in such a small place. It was ear piercing and bugging a lot of people, including me. The busy bartender who was running around had to tell him not once, but twice to stop and the guy gave him so much attitude and then just to be a child on top of it whistled on his way out. I dont usually leave negative reviews on dive bars as they are few and far between in LA. Last night we were at the oaks, a place I try to avoid as I do not enjoy karaoke, and this is a 7 days a week torture of the ears place. But my friends like to perform and it was my buddies birthday so we stopped in for a drink. As usual very crowded, people screeching into the mic and having a great time. What ruined it for me was the male bartender. A very rude fuck. Ive seen this pretty boy before, he spends more time chatting with the ladies than he does making drinks, while the woman behind the bar busts her ass. I've worked in the bar industry 25 years, I would have fired this guy in a heartbeat if he worked for me. But to the point. When we got our birthday boy on stage to sing, as the room cheered and applauded, my friend let out a whistle. This set the bartender off for some reason, where he ran over screaming at my friend to stop whistling. "We dont allow that here!" He barked. Im sorry, my friends whistle was too much for you? On a nightly basis you hear the shriek of Woo girls and drunks, but this was too much for your delicate sensibilities? We left as soon as our friend was done singing. It's that bars loss too, you made 3 bartenders, a waitress and two dueling pianists leave because youre a dick. We won't be back. Thats a lot of good tippers. Thoroughly enjoyed my night here. Went with friends on a Tuesday night, and was able to get the last open table upon arrival. Our bartender was very nice and helpful. We caught the end of open mic night before jumping in on kareoke. I will warn you, they no longer have pool tables and the place is pretty small. But the crowd was fun and we had a great time! Also, no taco truck that night but they do offer pizza and free popcorn! read more

I came to leave a long overdue glowing review of my go to bar and was dismayed to see the most recent review before mine. As a bonafide regular, let me first just say that there is no one named Jessica who works here so like... lol what? Was he even at this bar? Who knows. But to clarify anyway- if a KJ DOES ever tell you that it's not possible to sing it is either because A) you signed up too late and their list is packed to the end of the night (common on weekends- if you really want to sing on a Friday or Saturday get there EARLY), or B) they don't have the weirdly specific song you are trying to sign up for (and look- my go to song is called Camel Toe and it's about exactly what you think so I feel you on the obscure song choices. Friendly reminder that not having your song is not an excuse to be crappy to the staff.) Now back to the review I intended to leave: This place is awesome and they really have something going on for everyone. Do you want beer and bar snacks while watching football? They got you. Want to play trivia? They got you. Want to sing karaoke literally any night of the week? They got youuuu. Do you often find yourself slaving away in a corporate hellscape fondly reminiscing about the theme parties of your youth? The KJs go out of their way to host some awesome theme nights like wig Wednesdays, Gatsby themed white tie nights with special prohibition cocktails, and 80s night. Follow them on instagram and keep an eye on the stories, they're great about updating regularly with the upcoming events. They also have open mic and acoustic nights, amateur drag shows (featuring drag queens AND kings), and host a Cornhole league through LA SportsNet. They take reservations for large groups if you're having a party but they also have a huge group of regulars who are super inclusive if you show up by yourself. If you're new to the area or just trying to make some new friends this is definitely the place to be- you'll always find someone to talk to. The staff here is also great. The KJs are enthusiastic, the bartenders are efficient and friendly, and the bouncers just want to keep the place safe so everyone can keep having a good time. All of these things are great but the best review I can leave is this: I'm not a huge fan of drinking and I am a terrible singer, yet somehow I ended up being a regular here. And it isn't because of the super fun theme nights or delicious drinks- it's because of the vibe. It's because of the people. There is a community feel here that you just don't get from clubs or larger bars. I've made as many friends in a year of being a bar regular here as I had in my previous 5 years of living in LA put together. And that's not something you can find everywhere.
