For all the people who panned this place, realize that OTR is really a club. Either you belong or you don't. If you get it, and play nice, you will have great service and a reasonably good meal. Jaci, hands down the best bartender that we had the pleasure to meet and come to know by how she cared for us. We were there late to have cocktails and dessert one evening and Jaci cared for us. We returned the next night for dinner and we sat again at the bar. She smiled and asked us if we wanted the same drinks we had the night before. We are not regulars and quite frankly we were pleasantly surprised. Our evening continued as we recognized that Jaci has an ability to work her bar with precision and grace. I came here with my wife recently for lunch and we were not disappointed. We ordered scallop ceviche with a watermelon salad paired with a delicious pairing of rose wine. I enjoy this place every time I come to watch hill beach. After a day of being out in the sun and working up an appetite, i like to come here and order their flatbread and a nice salad or light meal. They shine on their sangria...it is so refreshing and some of the best I have had ever. The service is only okay and that is why they only get three stars. I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! We have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. DO NOT BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS RE:CHILDREN. It's not that they are "unwelcome". If you see the layout of the dinning room you will notice that there is no room for high chairs and other baby gear. Waitstaff and customers would have no room to pass by tables. We have been taking our children here since they were old enough to sit in a normal chair and behave. They have ALWAYS been treated well.The location is perfect. Beautiful Watch Hill, surrounded by summer boutiques, shops and art galleries. The menu is excellent. Varied and delicious. Their Tuna Tartare on crisp chip as a special was incredible. The Bolagnese Sauce is fantastic. The service is attentive and pleasant. Perfect New England atmosphere. Great selection of Martini's and cocktails. It is our "go to" place in the summer. Enjoyed a great meal....very busy and took just about an hour for the table, but worth it. The mussels and the flaked cod appetizers were terrific. Main courses were equally tasty. Wine selection was terrific. The place was very busy and the only downside was the wait (no reservations) and constantly being asked to move out of the way for servers. Hard to say. The Greek salad was delicious; with the giant feta chunks and whole lettuce heads---very refreshing. As for the drinks, the mojito was deliciously soothing topped with a sugar cane to add flavor. Regardless, it's a bit overpriced as with everything around Watch Hill, however the drinks are worth the trip. The atmosphere is wasp central... Seriously. For the first time in my life I felt discriminated against solely because I had a baby. First let me start of by saying my family has been patrons of this restaurant for 40 years. On average when dining at this restaurant our bill is around $200. When we come to this restaurant we are always nicely dressed and never have we have never shown up in bathing suits with see through cover ups, or have the men worn tank tops and trucker hats which seems to be the norm at this location. Last week my mother myself and my 11 month old son showed up for lunch right when it opened. We had our stroller with us. There was nobody sitting inside. I was told that not only was my stroller not allowed I had to put it outside around the corner where I could not see it. I'm sorry but my stroller is a thousand dollars.. there is no way I'm putting my stroller out of view. I asked if I could just fold it up.. Nope.. the real issue was they don't offer high chairs at this location. So there was no way for my child to eat with us. The hostess told me the owner doesn't want strollers inside because they don't want servers having to walk around them. I can understand at busy times where all the tables are taken but we were the only ones there!! I asked if we could sit outside..nope. It's clear that this restaurant wants nothing to do with children and will do anything it can to discriminate against people who do have them. I do not bring my child to certain restaurants because it's not appropriate. But this watch hill..if you allow people with see through shirts, bathing suits and trucker hats, babies should be allowed as well. We went to the Ocean House instead. I am truly disappointed and disgusted by the service I received at this restaurant. I guess 40 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars doesn't guarantee respect and good service. read more

We went to this restaurant for a dinner. We had Bahama salad with additional chicken and fish and chips. The salad was very good, but cost us $22. Fish and chips were below average. Our Big Y makes much taistier and juicier fish with the same unpleasant taste french fries, but at least they don't charge $20 for it. read more

We ate at the tea room last night, and can't wait to go back! We have dined here several times this season and it is consistently good, from the excellent service to the drinks, wine selection by the glass and of course the food. Had a wine mishap and without having to call for help, there they were, and they kindly replaced the poor spilled glass and brought over some stain wipes . Visited for an early dinner 4:30 on a Friday. Good thing because when we walked by 2 hrs later there were people lined up on the sidewalk! I was a little surprised by all the negative reviews, since I had nothing but a great memories of this place from my one previous visit (2010). No matter, we decided to go again for dinner on 8/2/12 and sat outside with Brittni as our waitress. We enjoyed the sweet potato fries as an app, had a few pink grapefruit martini's and enjoyed the excellent service. Brittni was attentive, pleasant, timely and made good recommendations. My wife had the half of spaghetti bolognese and I had chicken parm. The only minor thing was my wife wished there was a bit more sauce on the bolognese and I had remembered the parm being a bit more crispy. Neither of which had a negative impact on our meal. We had desserts of Ghirardelli cupcake and the Rum Gingerbread, both were delicious. We would go back for a 3rd time. read more

Man I am surprised by the rating of this place! This place is right across from the dock with a nice view. I would definitely recommend sitting outside if the weather is nice. When we first walked in we were greeted by a hostess and when we asked to sit outside, she sort of just said seat yourself. I thought this was a little awkward but I didn't mind too much. Shortly after we were given menus and drink options. My brother has been here before and he recommended the oysters and the fish and chips. I was not disappointed in either! I am from California so I am not used to these small oysters but they were delicious and sweet. I am not a big of oysters but I really like the oysters here. The fish and chips were excellent! Add a bit of vinegar and lemon for taste but i loved it. Honestly, best fish and chips I've ever had. It was so light, buttery and tasty. The portions were huge for the fish and chips. I shared with my brother. My sister got the tuna ceviche tacos. It wasn't for my liking and my sister said it was missing something. Our server was a dick! Also apparently the restaurant is so anti-kid that they don't have a single highchair in the restaurant, so my in-laws switched off holding my active 10 month old during lunch. Then while we were in the middle of ordering our server decided to tell us they do have a kids a menu, this is well after the fact that we asked about customizing food orders for my 3 year old and were about to order a $13 avocado carpaccio, so we got the kids a childrens cheese pizza to share and it was literally a grilled piece of pita bread with some sauce thrown on top and 1 glob of melted mozzarella barely touching 2 slices...so really it was dry ass bread and only 4 slices that he described as "plenty big, even you can have some" We did not feel welcomed there and the food wasn't even good to possibly make up for the shit service we got. Also, I've been in the service industry for 12+ years and never ever would I had made someone feel unwelcome in any establishment I've been a part of. Customer service is horrendous. We were told it would be a 45 minute wait, so my husband and I went to the bar to get a drink while we waited. After standing there for awhile, someone finally asked me what I'd like to drink. I order a glass of prosecco and then watch the bartender take other orders and set a couple up for dinner with silverware while I'm still standing there waiting for my drink. Why would she take care of other people first when I had ordered before them? I finally just walked away after waiting for about 10 minutes. Then, that 45 minute wait ended up being almost an hour and a half. We were told first come, first serve for outside tables. As they were walking us to a table, we saw an outside table had opened up. They wouldn't let us sit there and didn't really have a reason why. Then, once we finally sat it took about 20 minutes to get our drinks from our server. He was taking orders from other tables that had sat after us before coming over to us to bring our drinks. It seems like the staff doesn't know how to multi-task or prioritize when busy. The food was ok, but overpriced. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area with better quality food. Won't be going back there. read more

Tried to go there with 4 other families and were turned away. We offered to sit separately as if we went there on our own. We were told they wouldn't accommodate us as we had too many people and if we broke up into our families we would cause too much trouble. It was only 11:30 and they had just opened so it wasn't busy yet. The owner or manager handled it horribly. Used to be our go to spot numerous times a year but we will never return. We also watched him turn away someone simply because they had a stroller which could have simply been left outside. I was informed that I would have to go back outside the restaurant and look at the posted menu. Keep in mind I'm standing 2 ft from a stack of menus. No one else is waiting for a table. Hostess refuses to let me see a menu. Call back and after a couple attempts get the manager. Says restaurant policy is to not let people stand in the foyer and read the menu. So you mean all these bad service reviews are a result of poor policy not poor staff. Congratulations on running a restaurant to a 3 star yelp rating. Well done sir. read more

I had been here many times over the years as we frequent the local beach and normally get a meal before driving home. Food is below average and I am not normally one for writing reviews. But I always went back as sunset views are spectacular and place does have a good vibe at times - more because of patrons - than the staff. We had some friends come up with us from NYC one weekend. Waited in line outside and then got to owner to put our name down and hes said he didn't have a table big enough for us. We obviously disappointed said, no problem, we'll sit separately and then catch up for drinks afterwards. The owner refused to do that. he said we would get up and try talk to each other. I spoke to him quietly on the side and said. hang on sec, we're not kids, I come here literally 3 times a month and have spent a lot of money here. He looked me straight in the eye and said "I said, I can't help you"! He doesn't care. probably because there is so much tourism there and he is the only show in town and someone else will take my place. Sad that people have attitudes like that. After a beautiful day in Watch Hill RI with my daughter, we looked forward to sharing mussels at Olympia Tea Room. We timed it so the afternoon lunch crowd had diminished and spotted 2 empty outdoor tables. The hostess told us they weren't available so we were fine with sitting inside. That's when everything went downhill. We sat for 15 minutes watching waiters and waitresses walk by. No one came to even bring us water. While we were waiting we watched another couple come in and get the outside table we had asked about. We also watched them get served. Finally we left walking past the hostess who never even asked why we were leaving. Years ago I worked in restaurants and have a few close friends who have owned restaurants so I know it can be tiring but never have I ever been ignored. I wish I could have reviewed the food I had so looked forward to tasting. I also never thought I would ever leave a poor review but I am hoping that someone who works at the Olympia may read this and improve the attitude and efficiency of the staff. read more

I should have read the Yelp or Facebook reviews first and I recommend doing so. The majority of reviews say the service is poor and/or the food is subpar. Both are true. I took my mother there for lunch and they were practically empty, I figured it was because the busy season is over. However, if a beautiful place is empty during the off season, it usually means the locals know better. Tourists will eat anywhere especially after a day at the beach. I had the shrimp cocktail which had 4 shrimp and what tasted like a spoon of canned tomato paste with a lump of horseradish. No crackers, which would've been a nice distraction. We also ordered the "whole chicken" which was a flavorless overlooked tiny hen. The best part of the meal, ironically, was the $4.00 brussell sprouts. Almost everyone else in the restaurant was eating a fried fish sandwich with coleslaw on it. So, I suppose if you have to see for yourself, that's probably something they do well. The server appeared to have an issue with where the hostess seated us, although a dozen tables were empty. Then there was a couple with a young child who threw a yelling tantrum for at least 20 minutes while the parents spoke to each other over the yelling and ignored the hungry and tired little girl. The other customers just eyed each other in shock. It's too bad they don't take pride in service or quality. People say this is common in beach towns but maybe if they had an incentive they could turn things around. read more

If I could give a negative 5 star, I would. Olympia Tea Room is a complete disappointment. My family and I had a horrible horrible experience. I went today with my one year old son, two nephews 8 and 5, sister in law and mother. When we arrived, we were told that the kitchen wasn't working properly so only cold food would be served. We decided to stay since we all have fond memories of coming here as children. I asked for a high chair for my son and was told that they do not have high chairs. I told the waitress I was surprised because of how many families vacation in the area and she responded "I know, most people are surprised but it does see to keep families away." I ignored her comment and went to get a travel high chair from my trunk. When I returned, I was then told to leave my stroller outside. We sat down, the waitress seemed annoyed when I asked for some water for my son. I then pulled out a piece of cheese for my 1 year old to snack on while we ordered and was scolded by the waitress, saying "you cannot bring in outside food." I responded, we are going to order I just want to give my son a little something. She looked at me and again stated "we do not allow outside food." My sister in law then said "my son has food allergies, I brought him a few things too can I give it to him?" The waitress said no, at which point, we stood up and left. This place is awful and they clearly do not want children in the restaurant. Watch Hill is a place for families. Olympia Tea Room is a complete disgrace. I will never ever go back. read more

This restaurant yields the lowest rating for any restaurant I've ever dined at. While food provides a high percentage of a review, the service is also a consideration and how they treat customers. First they obviously don't want kids their and do not offer any high chairs or booster seats. Like handicapped access this should be a law not to discriminate against people with children. If you have a family with young children go elsewhere I attempted to make reservations by calling ahead, but was told they don't accept them. Upon arrival there were open tables and when I asked why we couldn't sit there I was informed they were "reserved" for friends of the owner. (Two tables each capable of about 6 people). I wasn't happy, but if you own the restaurant you can make your own rules. I was told t would be best if we sit outside at a table and it was "first come first serve". No problem I said then we will sit outside. After standing there for about 10 minutes another family came in looking for seating. They too were informed the outside offered the best opportunity to get a table in the near future. She then proceeded to tell them to stand outside and wait until someone was done to "grab" their table. Why in the world would she not explain that to me! I immediately called her on it and she told me she explained that to me. I told her all she indicated was that you didn't expect reservations and this "first come first serve" which in a civilized world would mean once you get there you would be seated as tables open up not hover over someone as they finished up their meal! Imagine what it would be like as were eating to have people standing over you with goal of "grabbing" your table when you were done! How low class can you get? Just laziness not to take names and monitor that like any decent restaurant would! The only reason they can get away with this level of customer service or should I say lack thereof, is they are the only restaurant in town! I want to make one thing clear. I've dined here before and find it completely over rated. If not being for convenience of being down the street, I wouldn't have chosen this location. Can I give this place less than one star? Walked in, flies everywhere. All over food and drinks. Seated myself at bar and took bartender at least 4-5 minutes to greet me. Asked for a 'HOUSE champagne' (for my wife) and an espresso. When my wife came to have her drink she passed it off to me saying the champagne tasted like 'Andre' then ordered a beer (the only other time we were acknowledged). After being ignored for the duration of our drinks (in which time we would've ordered an appetizer) we decided to close out. We were too uncomfortable with the crew taking badly about EVERY single patron they encountered. Upon receiving our bill our horrible 'house' champagne was $30 (for glass) . What????!?!!! When questioned, the server said there was only one and that was it. Seriously? It doesn't seem natural to offer that information to a customer?
