Yay! for Mel's of Folsom. They don't take resevations, but they were outstanding when it came to accomodating our party of 13 a week ago Sunday (8/21). Our table was all set up perfectly, with crayons and puzzles for the two little kiddos in our party. Heather was our waitress, a bundle of energy and the epitome of excellence! Every request was met with a smile and a "of course". Orders were delivered efficiently and accurately.( by multiple helpful people) Food was hot, very tasty and correct! II have been here a few times, for breakfast or lunch since it is walking distance from my work. I usually gravitate towards the biscuits and gravy or something with chili, but have tried different items which are always pretty good. The service has always been good. We love this place. Great food and the service is amazing. Our favorite waitress is Joey, she always greats us like we are family. We love their breakfast choices. DURING COVID-19: I ordered over the phone for their website advertised "curbside delivery" and was told it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. They asked for a description of my car, which I gave. I was 8 minutes away, just coming from the hospital for an MRI. I sat in the parking spot in front with headlights on for at least 20 minutes. No one came out. But while I sat there, I marveled at how respectful customers were, wearing their masks. Even the staff appeared compliant with mask protocol except for one young girl who had hers below her nose, which is useless! About 10 minutes after I got there, I saw these two high school age girls come bee bopping in, no masks, laughing talking and probably not realizing, spitting. After a few minutes I figured out they must be employees because their maskless laughing and talking continued as they walked behind the counter and other employee only areas. I got frustrated with the wait and got out of my car and went in. My order had been ready and sitting on the counter for who knows how long. Ended up being soggy fish and soggy onion rings and soggy fries. I paid close to $36 for this meal, and they all seemed confused at first which order was mine. Finally figured it out and never apologized. Too bad too, because I had a sizable tip waiting in my car for the curbside person who never materialized. There was a reason I ordered curbside during Covid. The manager stood right there and let these employees violate their own rule posted on the door, even when their customers followed the rule. I had to put MY mask on to go in, disrupt social hour, and bring it to the attention of the manager. He apologized to me but did nothing. Oh I'm sure they all had a good laugh about me after I left. But, folks, there's nothing funny about Covid. Don't advertise yourselves to be Covid compliant and having services that you don't truly offer. Will you be laughing when you or your parent, friend, grandparent, or someone you care about dies from this disease all alone on a hospital? Because that's what happens. This is a general review after having ordered several times from this place and feel that I have to share my opinion after having such a bad experience trying out some place else. I really like the food here. It is consistently well prepared with skill and care especially for the price. I regularly have the chicken fried steak breakfast which is very nice. I have never thought of Mel's Diner to be a place id ever eat at, but that all changed. Mel's Diner is now on my top favorite food places. Their fish and chips are delicious. Their burgers are very big and juicy. The staff is very friendly. The inside is very live and bright. They have jukeboxes you can play the 60's 70's and 80's music. The prices are adequate. Came here today for breakfast with my husband, got seated right away, ordered chili cheese omlete and a soda, husband got Wolfman jack. Food came out super quick and hot. Only complaint I have is that I never got my soda refilled and I finished it half way through my omlete, also they never came by to refill my husband water either ... the waiters were to busy talking to each other to realize that we needed a refill. We like to our drinks with our food all of it, we tried getting there attention but with no success. We went this diner in March for a breakfast birthday celebration. We waited for our meals for a long time and when they finally showed up a few of the plates were incorrect. After leaving 6 of 8 of our party were sick for a week! All of us live in separate places and only see each other very seldom. I know we got sick on something they cooked. I sometimes come in with my Mom before hitting up the Folsom outlets. Thankfully this day I was in a super chipper mood (I was getting a new purse and I knew it so I guess I couldn't be in a horrible mood). She comes back less than a few minutes later, and is so awkward at this point, I tell her I will flag her down when we are ready. Place our order. Comes out perfect. We didn't leave her a huge tip, I left her what my Mom normally does (read my other reviews you will know why I say this). Because she has horrible server etiquette. Mel's is Mel's ... the servers here make it or break it. I have had other servers here and they have all been really sweet. The manager guy was super nice and personable when he was checking me out (at the register, not like up and down you sickos). It was funny, as a side note, he is like me ... super OCD about the money being put facing the same way in the register. Managing bars for years I can't get over them being faced in different orders. Drives me BAT SHIZZNIT CRAZY!!! Same with him. We had a good chuckle about that. It was prob my horrible server. I didn't mention it to him, but in retrospect I should have, just so he would have known, but honestly, we will just not sit in her section, or maybe I will school her next time. The breakfast was shockingly good , not 5 star but better than I was expecting. I had the sunrise sandwich w/potatoes. My main problem with this place however is that with all the pictures they have on the walls there is not one person of color. There are a lot of pics from the movie American Graffiti. Some of the rest of the pics from back in the day seem to be from segregated times. The juke box has 80% black artists, like they are trying to distract you from realizing the all white pics on the walls. All I could do is shake my head. Loved the juke box on each day!! All in all loved mel's...had a great birthday dinner there and I received a really good Birthday sundae when I told the server it was my birthday!
