I visited this original location of the Original Pancake House for a late Sunday lunch, there was no wait. It is amazing to see a place that started back in the 1950s where the waiting room is full with the historical photos and telling the story of the restaurant. The food and huge portion sizes clearly no change in over 50 years. Even though I am on keto diet, I opted for one cheap-day just to try their food. My favorite is the Dutch Baby. It was perfectly baked, fluffy, and slightly crisp on the edges. It is huge portion and served with whipped cream, lemon, and powdered sugar. The hash browns were another outstanding item, so far the best hash browns i ever had. It's perfectly crispy and homemade. We also tried the cheese omelette, which was rich with sharp aged cheddar. The fluffy buttermilk pancakes came as sides, it's a good match with the syrup and cream. We were far too full to try the famous apple pancake, but I will surely order it on my next visit. read more

I have been visiting this location for over 50 years. By far this was the worst experience I've ever experienced. First of all it was my wife and I and the hostess must have forgotten how to follow the numbers for a party of 2. We had been waiting for over 30 minutes and 2 different parties of 2 with higher numbers were called before us. I went to inquire about this and was told it would be another 10 minutes. When we were finally seated, we were stuck in front of 2 portable air conditioning units with the hoses staring me in the face. There was also a coffee station behind us that the waitress had difficulty getting too. The service was very poor and slow. The food was very disappointing where I took a couple of bites and pushed it away. I wouldn't have even fed my dog this meal. You have lost a long time customer. Served with whipped butter, hot blueberry compote, dusted with magical fairy dust ( or you can call it powdered sugar ). Decent for a breakfast spot of you want big portions. Ordered the apple pancake, which by the way is so freaking huge and dense. Can easily feed 3-4 ppl. I also tried their French crepe. Which also was just okay. Kinda tasted a little eggy, like as if they cooked the crepe on the same grill as the eggs. Basically the crepe tasted like egg. Or maybe they just added too much egg to their crepe recipe. Another thing I didn't care for was that the crepe was rolled too many times to where it kinda made it thick. It was such a thick piece when you bit into it. The crepe was filled with a strawberry preserve and lemon custard which was just too sweet and too much for me. I did try their pancakes. I would say their regular simple pancakes is what I liked most. Not overly sweet or dense like the other items. They have parking but there isn't allot of spaces. I had the Italian Omelette. Which was excellent. But fair warning, this is a six egg omelette, which I over looked when ordering. So I did take half home with me. You also have to love their coffee mugs. You will want to buy one and take it with you. My waiter Ciara was great. Very friendly and helpful. I have to give this place 5 stars, the food overall is great, and the coffee is much better than it used to be. It's been a few years but they did win a Joe Beard's award. I don't come as often as I have grown tired of the menu. Summer is always a treat as they have fresh fruit! It is so popular that in the winter they have California strawberries which are not nearly as sweet (or in my mind have any flavor), but drowning them in whipped cream helps. They said their raspberries were also from CA at first this summer, but I found those to be pretty good. Later the ones from Oregon and then later again from CA were more bitter. The peaches started out great, juicy and really flavorful. Today they were a bit dry with no flavor, I did not even eat them. So their fruit selection is not what it used to be, I was told the founder inspected the fruit before accepting it. Worse even the waffle was a bit heavy more cake like than it used to be, maybe a bit under cooked, but not raw or anything like that. Anyway I had several weeks of Peach and raspberry waffles, with whipped cream on the side to use if the fruit is not a sweet as it often is, that were very good, and had the winter version of blueberry pancakes (because those are baked into the batter). which was excellent, better than remember when they did not have peaches.. Might have to quiz the waitress closer on the fruit from now on. For some reason they don't show it availability on the table, if you are new you might not know to ask. I also like the cherry crepe (too sweet for some), Dutch Baby, German Apple pancake . . . Oh the community table can be a fun place to talk it up though I don't know the people like I used to . . . It is very loud , maybe all the hard surfaces or everyone talking loudly to be heard. I bring headphones with noise reduction most of the time now days. It was a Friday, it is located directly off the freeway and there was plenty of parking. We were greeted with a smile and sat immediately. Menu is extensive. We ordered the following: 1. Dutch Baby: didn't know what this was and had never had it before so it was a must. It's "eggy" so if you don't like the egg taste stick to pancakes. It's large and shareable. Not bad. 2. Denver omelette. Actually my daughter wanted a denver omelette but they had a veggie omelette on the menu and she just added ham. Also very large and shareable. Came with a side of hashbrowns. 3. As a longtime fan who has loved the Original Pancake House and sought out this beloved restaurant in many cities, I am saddened by today's experience. This is THE ORIGINAL, first location, and I've been here many times. Pros: Ambiance and service have not changed. Friendly staff, quick service, kitschy decor. Good coffee in cute mugs. Added bonus: the restaurant now accepts credit cards! Cons: Their signature Apple pancake was tough and rubbery. Cinnamon topping was wet and lacking in flavor. Usually the cinnamon topping is slightly crunchy with strong cinnamon essence and the interior has a bit more custardy and airy texture without a dry rubbery crust on the bottom. I suspect it was pre-baked and had waited in the oven too long? (Our server even offered to replace it with a fresh pancake.) But, I think they are using a different cinnamon and apples in their recipe resulting in overall lack of flavor. Cherry crepes. Crepes are tasty! Same chewy texture. But the cherries were completely different. Looked more like canned cherry pie filling, served in giant globs of overly sweet sauce. Lacking the sour and sweet true cherry umami flavors. Maybe pick a different filling? This change in recipes and possibly the quality of ingredients is just so disappointing. I hope the current owners rethink this. read more

I've come many times with my family. I honestly don't think I need to go back though. It's very small and gets very busy. There's not much space as they pack the tables in. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I really enjoy the hot cocoa (even though I don't know if it's really milk and chocolate or if it's instant). It's a bit too sweet though. I wanted a specific type of pancake but wasn't sure what kind it was, the waitress gave me a recommendation to try the sourdough pancakes which I had never had before so I decided to try them, while they weren't what I was looking for I'm glad a I tried them they were really good. A slight sourness and a little thicker than a typical pancake. The whipped cream is made there fresh and is so good I could just eat a bowl of it lol The only negative thing I would say it's a small and fast paced area so the tables are pretty close together and waitresses are constantly coming and going by but that could just be because we were sat right next to the kitchen. I tend to always order the same thing here, which is the empty crepe shells (I put butter, powdered sugar, and whipped cream on them), bacon, and hot cocoa. Their orange sauce is also really good on the crepes. These items are simple, fast, and consistently good. Recently, I tried the French Toast with strawberries and whipped cream. The strawberries were really nice, only ruined by the French Toast. The sourdough French toast is akin to eating dry-ish bread with scrambled eggs, opposed to custard like. If you're a French Toast lover, don't eat this. For what amounts to sugar, flour, eggs, butter, and milk, it's very expensive. I can get a breakfast of steak, eggs, and really good fried potatoes on 23rd for less than 3 crepes, 4 slices of bacon, and hot cocoa. The original pancake house is a must stop for brunch in the portland area. They have a wide variety of delicious offerings. I would recommend the bacon, it's was $9, but is was delicious! We also enjoys the Dutch baby. I would steer clear of the "fresh squeezed orange juice" it was thick due to how much pulp was there ( see photo). I couldn't drink it die to thickness. read more

Any restaurant that's the first of its kind has a special place in my heart. And "Original" in the name is not just marketing - this is the Pancake House that begat them all! As you can imagine, they have nearly every type of pancake that exists - inspired from all over the world. I recommend the pigs in a blanket with the hot tropical syrup - it'll make you squeal with delight. The staff is attentive, kind and treats you like family. God forbid if you're in a wheelchair. The handicap parking is right out front with a very lovely set of stairs going down to the front door. If there is a wheelchair ramp, there's not any signage we could see directing us there. The wheelchair situation is only temporary for us but we'll make not revisiting this place permanent!
