This place has fallen pretty far. It's $10 for a side of honey dipped fried chicken and the chicken is tiny. I could get a whole bag of fried chicken from Safeway for that price. I had to ask for my own refills 3 times and ask for sides. Service was nonexistent. Another regular came in and one of the waitresses told him in a screechy kind of voice that the business is "dyingggg" and "weekends aren't busy anymore." Gee, I wonder why. Tocino plate was good; but there's less of the meat servicing and it was a little too charred for my liking. Thank god the home fries were there to save the day. The server literally had to be asked to get up from doom scrolling her phone or whatever she was doing. I asked her for a togo box and a refill and she only gave me the to go box. I had to get up and ask her again for the refill. Total 3 refills I had to flag or get up to ask and one straight ignored. $3.85 for a bottomless refill that you have to get up and ask for! Not only that, but the fried chicken side was ~$10.50 on the menu and they charged me $11.50 on the ticket. That's not legal. You need to have updated pricing on the menus. That's a VERY concerning liability issue that should be fixed immediately. I spilled vinegar on my shirt from the tocino and I asked her to wait for me to input the tip as I was putting the food into the to-go bag. She literally rushed me for the tip and signature as I was trying to put the food into the bag (yes, I did have to ask her for the bag, and for a full plate of food, she gave me two tiny togo boxes, so the vinegar I tried to put in the box opened and leaked due to pressing it into the box). She was impatient and rude. I did feel like telling her this kind of service doesn't warrant a tip. I was hoping this place would be like before and I could become a regular again as I work nearby. Guess not. Customers are your lifeblood. If you can't even check on a customer without them getting up from their meal, don't expect a good tip. It's ridiculous honestly. The Pantry has been my go-to spot for Filipino breakfast. I came here on a Monday and my bf & I ordered the sisig along with longanisa and a side of cornbeef. The portions of rice were huge but we appreciated that our eggs weren't overcooked. The sisig came on an iron skillet and was sizzling once the server put it down. I've been to The Pantry a number of times since I was first introduced to it in 2010. However, this is the first time I am writing a review about it. This is also my first time ordering from them since before the pandemic. I know that it is owned by a Filipino family and that they are very friendly, accommodating and welcoming. It's like being invited to eat at a Filipino neighbor's place for a meal. Today, I was in the area running errands when a craving for some Filipino breakfast hit me hard. I immediately made a beeline to The Pantry and ordered the Tocino breakfast. I was torn between hashbrowns and rice, the latter a staple for Filipinos. And although it paired well with tocino, the fact that it wasn't garlic rice made it less appealing. Sensing my hesitation, the person who took my order suggested half and half. I had no idea that was possible, but boy am I glad she gave me that option! To top it off, she even suggested putting grilled onions on top of the hashbrowns. This was an excellent recommendation as the aroma and taste from the grilled onions became a superb substitute from the fried garlic that was missing from my rice. By the way, even though it was supposed to be half and half, the "half-rice" was really a full-sized cup which was overly generous. The tocino was very tender and had the right amount of sweetness. There was the traditional charring of the meat. What was notable about this protein was the lack of pork fat that is almost always present along with the expected red food coloring. Both omissions were very welcome by this eater. Finally, the packaging for the meal to go also showed the excellent attention to detail by the proprietors. The small container of the vinegar, which had a amazing flavor by the way, was tucked neatly inside the to-go container. On top of the closed container was a small paper bag filled with the plastic cutlery, with sufficient amount of napkins and and enough ketchup packets. It's not a mystery why this place still exists in spite of the challenges suffered by other restaurants in the neighborhood. Kudos and more power to the owners of The Pantry. read more

This is the closest Filipino food to me, because it's across the street! I have had brunch here with my boyfriend and ordered for delivery to work many times. Sisig: It came out on a sizzling plate, which seems to be the common way of serving sisig nowadays. There was no flavor, and was extremely oily. Their sisig does include the tendons or maybe the ear?, which I'm not a fan of, and lots of fatty parts. I guess after eating sizzling sisig at Chibog or Tselogs in Daly City, it's difficult to enjoy others. I would not recommend, especially for the price they charge for it Tocino silog: Also lots of fatty parts, and not much flavor. The Pantry is a unique Filipino restaurant in a familiar A frame building providing hearty breakfasts and Filipino specialties. It's right near 101 and 92 so convenient for anyone crossing the Hayward/San Mateo bridge of heading up the peninsula.. Ambiance 3 stars - Quaint old A frame similar to a Swiss lodge with old wooden tables and a pay counter in the middle. Low windows in the sides with some visibility into the kitchen. Service 5 stars - Our server Erin was working the entire floor on this mid week morning and handles orders and bussing on both sides of the restaurant quickly efficiently and with a friendly smile under her mask. She is the granddaughter of the Woman who makes the lumpia (more later). Chicken Adobo 4 stars - A big bowl of adobo sauce and 4 pieces (2 thighs and 2 drums) of chicken with 2 big scoops of rice were more than I could eat in one sitting. The sauce was classic soy/vinegar/garlic/sugar and tangy and well balanced. Chicken was soft but not so much that it would fall of the bone. Pro Tip - Move your chicken to your rice plate, remove the meat, and constantly pour sauce over meat and rice to eat. Fried chicken and Texas Toast French Toast - 4 stars - An extra $1 for the swap but worth it. Thick eggy toast and 3 crispy pieces of fried chicken that were low in salt (the way we like it). Sandwiches 4 stars - Ordered the Truckers Special which consisted of several hearty layers of roast beef, Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions. Tuna melt on rye thick with tuna and cheese. French fries with the roast beef was way better than getting a the bag of chips with the tuna. Lumpia 5 stars - It's worth coming here just of the hand rolled Lumpia. They are crispy and fresh and filled with meaty deliciousness. Our server Erin's grandmother makes them daily and when they run out they are done. 8 lumpia for $6 is a bargain. Pro Tip - Get a bag of 50 frozen for $33 and be the hero of any party you attend. Overall - Great pit stop after an airport pickup and our GoTo place for Lumpia. read more

This place looks like it hasn't changed since the day it opened. They have a menu consisting of classic American fare, some Filipino items, and a few other randoms. We ordered the Shanghai lumpia which was good. Corned beef hash with rice and eggs over medium. Corned beef hash is out of the can which I actually don't mind. Eggs were cooked perfectly. The dish tasted good but it would be nice if they griddled it longer so that the hash gets a crisp on it. Chicken Fried Steak left much to be desired. Cutlet was so saturated in oil that it left a greasy film in the mouth. Chicken Fried Steak also had no crisp on it whatsoever. Completely drenched in gravy which only added to its lack of crunchy texture. Pancake was good. Huge. Service was nice and fast. Food came out at lightning speed which sometimes is a good thing but in this case it seemed like maybe they could spend a little more time cooking the food a little longer so it comes out with a bit more love. My second time here. I've had biscuits and gravy at Jack's and Neil's and was happy with their dishes, but the Southern Comfort from the Pantry was definitely a HOMERUN. I am Filipino and from Hawaii and I can say confidently that it is not chicken adobo at all but shoyu chicken- a semi-sweet gingery sauce as opposed to a vinegar based one studded with peppercorns that is adobo. The Pantry does a rustic hash brown that's only lightly browned (a little mushy in some spots) with salt and pepper with caramelized onions on top....i prefer mine plain but a good variation to try Limited seating as they're adhering to safety protocols so if going on the weekend, get there early. Takeout is not the best option as hot food items are layered on top of one another into one container...I'm all about minimizing waste and packaging but keep in mind your hash browns won't be crispy and taste like teriyaki from the chicken sitting on top. A lot of re-crisping when you get home so recommend dining-in (only one table outside) or in your car. :) Overall, I give The Pantry 3.5 - 4 stars for this experience and will try their lunch options in the future. Customer service is "ok"...I walked to the counter where it noted Take Out orders with 3 people behind the counter not even making eye contact...yeah I get you're busy and doing stuff but at least acknowledge...after about 5-7 minutes standing there I had to loudly say "I'm here for pick up" (to get their attention) and was directed to a table with takeout orders...basically, I could've taken any order I wanted! There were only a few other people dining at 11:00am. This did not include the many people in and out with to go orders. This is a hole in wall with a old diner feel. This is not the place if you want super fancy. This places is down to earth and keeps thing real. We decided on the Loco Moco and the Tocino with eggs. Both were pretty darn good. For spring break this year, instead of traveling someplace, we opted for a Food Crawl. The 4 of us entered places to visit and this place was pulled for Breakfast. It had been years since we've been so we were excited to go, especially for their lumpia and Filipino food choices. (which is why my husband entered this spot) For vacation, you want to eat great food right? Upon being seated, I was already grossed out. It was kinda dark and gloomy in there, only a few people dining. I watched the lady take a damp cloth and haphazardly wipe the table. I was sitting next to someone's leftover rice kernels my entire meal. I didn't want to touch anything or set my hands or elbows ANYWHERE! My daughter + I ordered their shrimp omelette (eggs, shrimp, avocado, mushroom, cheese) and lumpia to share. I barely saw any of the Filipino Favorites we were expecting on the menu. When it came, the juicy shrimp we thought we were going to get was what my daughter said was "the tiny shrimp you find in a cup o'noodles!" The cheese was yellow (thought swiss would've been a good choice) and not a good quality kind. The crispy hashbrowns we asked for were un- or under-seasoned. Thankfully the lumpia was still okay, that saved the meal. Even tho I barely finished 2, in between bites of trying to force-swallow the random pieces of omelette to keep peace with the Huz's choice and still try + salvage a good Breakfast Spot for the kids' spring break Food Crawl! Ugh. We paid $100 for a family of 4, and food that we could barely get down. They were probably so offended that my daughter and I left most of our omelette on our plates and DID NOT take it to-go. The steak itself had no flavor and very bland and the hash had no flavor. It also felt like they didn't clean the griddle because of how many burnt bits were in my food.
