I have to disclaim something before I dig in here. I had a five star experience at a good restaurant. I did not have a five star experience at a five star steakhouse, because this place doesn't serve five star steaks. Here's the nitty gritty: the steak is basically what you get at Roadhouse or Longhorn, honestly. It's wet aged, nothing special on that front. It's good, but so is some of the chain steaks. The pricepoint is in the ballpark of what you're going to pay at Longhorn for a similar cut, so I say if you're trying to decide where to go, pick this place for the extras it brings to the the table. What makes this place five star? Let's jump in. 1. Service. It was frankly some of the best, friendliest, most attentive I've ever had, from the hostess all the way through the waitstaff. 2. Environment. This is a very cool little spot. It's like being a dinner guest at someone's home, because that's what you are. This old house was converted into a restaurant decades ago, and it has character. While some of the decor leans into "cracker-barrel" territory, overall, there are enough cool antiques and other items all around to keep things interesting. The stone walls and fireplaces are also gorgeous. 3. The bar. What a cool, intimate, neat little place. 4. The drinks are not crazy prices and they're quite good, with a few nifty drink specials, like a Thin Mint Martini. 5. Food itself. While the steak was good, it was equal to the chains. The tableside presentation and customization of your ribeye cut was very fun and a nice vintage touch, the true star of my dinner show was the generous portion of scallops. They were perfectly grilled and delicious. The brussell sprouts were phenomenal. 6. The salad bar. Firstly, I appreciate a good one, and this is a very good one. Salad bars themselves have become a rarity, and it was the fact that they had one available that cinched me going to this place. I was very, very pleased with the offerings, presentation, freshness, and cleanliness. 7. Onion soup. That stuff was quite tasty. 8. Price. This place isn't cheap, nor is it terribly expensive. It sits right on that midline that's perfect for something a cut above fast-casual but not quite "get-dressed-up." The menu offers enough variety for cost-conscious consumers to find something budget friendly (the kids selections are especially affordable for families). It's a little more expensive than Chilis with much better food, atmosphere, and service. Overall, this was a perfect place to bring a date, especially if you're trying to make an impression with a good spot that isn't pretentious but is more special than Ruby Tuesdays. It is definitely my opinion that the Yelp reviews are too low and don't reflect the reality of goodness this place actually is. read more

Wow, what a major disappointment. Growing up in Greenville, going to The Peddler was tied to some major life event. It was a special treat - like really special. I was back in town for the night and decided to go back after probably 30 years. I was hesitant given the Yelp reviews. But nostalgia won out. In hindsight, I should have listened to the reviews. The positive - the staff was very friendly. Our server Phoebe was awesome. The parking - it is what it is. The free shuttle from the lower lot is an awesome service. The food? Below average. Salad Bar - decent. Nothing spectacular. The ribeye I ordered was flavorless and and awful cut. It was 16 ounces and I bet 5 of those were inedible. The steak literally had no seasoning on it. None. All in all, it was bad. Sides - broccoli was good. But hard to screw that up. The Brussels sprouts were good but there were very few actual sprouts. A whole of the "skins". As far as the atmosphere, you can't beat it. It is one of the more unique restaurants in all of South Carolina. But ambiance and service do not make up for below quality food. Wife and I went for our anniversary, and booked a reservation in advance for 6 PM. We arrived 15 minutes early and still weren't seated until 6:30, which was frustrating. The ambiance was nice, and the server was good. However, we placed our food order around 6:45 and didn't receive our food for almost an hour. And when it arrived, my wife's steak came out rare rather than the medium she asked for. So we were sat late, received our food late, and the quality of the food was not good. Honestly for the money the best value for a steakhouse. And I eat at Flemings and Capital Grill. No shade at those places. But the Peddler is a third less for a steak. Why 4 stars instead of 5. The system has devalued words and ratings. The Peddler is ABOVE average. Much better than Texas Roadhouse or Longhorn. I am trying to interject realism. Came in as a small group for dinner on a weeknight and this place was packed! Service was very friendly when we checked in and throughout our visit. We made reservations and as soon as the remainder of our group arrived, we were seated. The venue is very old school steakhouse (with a 70's flair). Lots of stone walks and floors and wood. The menu has most all the typical seafood and steak you'd expect at a steakhouse. Their niche is cutting rib eye tableside to your liking, which was nice. We all ordered one, so the butcher brought a large one out for us to review and pick which side we wanted it cut from, as well as the thickness. They also are known for their salad bar, which was really nice and offered a large selection of items and definitely the most salad dressings I've ever seen on a salad bar. All the food we tried was really good and fresh. I will say that one member of our party had his steak over-cooked (asked for medium rare and got medium plus, almost well done). There were a few other issues with service, bringing the wrong thing, etc, but they were very friendly, so it's easily overlooked. Overall, it was a decent experience. read more

Love the old feel. The building is 108 years old! The place was packed and we parked in extended parking. Luckily then have a little shuttle to drive you up. How nice! Service was friendly. The place was VERY busy (it was the day after Christmas). The food was overall good. I ordered my steak medium well and it was definitely more medium except the edges. My baked potato was fine. My guy had the salmon and felt it was just okay. I'd say there are nice portions and everything seemed fresh. The salad bar was good but I'd rather choose my own 2nd side than have the free salad buffet (my preference). Loved the soft appetizer bread. I grew up in Greenville. Going to the Peddler was always a treat. The past few years, we've had mixed reviews. Tonight, sadly, was likely our last. We went to celebrate a special occasion. My wife got the filet and I got the ribeye. Both of our steaks were lacking flavor. We both asked for steak sauce (which is a no no when eating a great steak). Half of our steaks were just fat and inedible. The service, however, was great. But the steaks were very mediocre and I'm kind of sad about it. read more

Overall food was good with generous portions. Just a few suggestions. Servers serving food in front of people two people over from them, they could've easily gone to that person and served it closer. No one seemed to know who had what when being served. Waiting for plates for salad bar, why not just bring them to everyone and they can go when they want. Bathroom needs to be reconfigured to where you can open the door without having to use your freshly washed hand. Following up to add that while our food and service was good enough that I was prepared to update my review, I subsequently received a text from the GM accusing me of walking out on my bill and not paying and threatening action. I provided proof of my payment via credit card. Then no response at all from the GM, not an acknowledgment that she made a mistake or an apology. I was brought here by a business associate who recommended the restaurant. Was traveling for work and had dinner here. Traveling for work and going to many restaurants over the years. I've lost count on the number of steak houses I have visited. The Peddler is a Steak house that should be in Chicago, New York, La or dare I say Texas. The 16 oz steak was cut in front of me and cooked perfectly to a medium rare. The owner stopped by our table to say hello and ask us if we needed anything , everything was perfect. Had supper there last night, 5:30 reservations so we got there 5:25. After checking in with the hostess we were told they would start seating at 5:30. We did not get seated until 5:45, we were the only guest in the dining room, why so long? Once seated everything was great! Came here after a very long week of moving into our new home. I'd like the start by saying the bar is by far the coolest spot in the place. Very intimate and dark bar that sends you back in time. Great place to come if you just want to grab a quick cocktail. We were seated within 30 minutes - fast service. Super friendly wait staff and very knowledgeable on the menu. The chef came out and hand cut out ribeyes for us to make sure the marbling was solid for us. Great experience on seeing that! Parmesan Truffle Fries - A must try if it's your first time here. They are crispy and fried beautifully with the light touch of truffle oil and Parmesan shreds! 12 oz Ribeye - Steak was well cooked (medium) and the marbling on it was beautiful. Only reason I'm giving this review 4 stars is because of the flavor. Couldn't put my finger on it but maybe the steak wasn't seasoned enough? Not sure but it was definitely a great steak - I've just had better at the price point. All in all, very nice rustic atmosphere to have a meal with your crew. The salad bar is a nice touch too! If you have room for dessert - go with the Peanut Butter Explosion. Comfortable environment. Great service and great food. Mahi mahi was cooked to perfection. My husband really enjoyed the ribeye.

I went there Saturday evening. Very crowded. By myself. I sat at the bar and had dinner and watched the Mavericks game. I really enjoyed the steak. I got the 11 ounce fillet cooked just the way I wanted it. Had broccoli with it as well. The shrimp cocktail was great quality appetizer. I asked for extra hot horseradish and I was surprised at how potent it was. I was very pleased. It reminded me a lot ofDunston's steakhouse in Dallas. One of my favorites because of the salad bar. A big shout out to Melissa, who helped me navigate through the kitchen after I accidentally parked in the back. Well, we went here to celebrate our third or fourth vacation together. They're also good but we were really impressed with this restaurant. It has an incredible ambience Our server, Katie was amazing The salad bar really caught our attention. The steak was really good. We had the New York strip with loaded baked potatoes. And the Keylime pie was amazing. The owner makes it herself. We'll definitely be coming here every year as we enter into our marriage together it's in a amazing venue It's like walking into a movie set which I'm quite familiar with lol it's my job but this dinner was anything but a job. This restaurant is such a staple for Greenville but it's definitely gone down hill. I was happy we were able to find a parking space. We waited about 40 min for a table. We got sat in their sunroom/covered patio area. This steakhouse isn't cheap and I was slightly annoyed that we were sitting on cheap lawn furniture. The place also was a little dirty. Lots of cobwebs and the carpet was filthy. I wish we were able to sit in the main dining area. I was happy they had the salad bar. They didn't have everything as usual but most of the stuff. I ordered the prime rib queen cut-cooked well done since I was pregnant. My husband got the ribeye cooked medium rare. My steak was cooked pretty rare even though I got an end piece. My husband's steak was cooked med well. Our server was non existent. Tables around us kept having to ask other servers for things because our server just wasn't around. We literally thought she went home. She took our order. Forgot my soup. Told her to take it off of the check. She never came by ever til we were almost done with our food. When she finally came by and asked if we were ok, my husband said that he thought that she left and she busted out laughing. My wife, adult Son and I have been taking each other out on Biweekly Thursdays to try different restaurants around Greenville for last few months and it was my week to pick somewhere and I chose The Peddler Steakhouse! Wow it was fantastic. We had a reservation at 5:30 and checked in and received a text our table was ready about 5 mins later. The ambiance was very nice, our server was Jennifer who was very attentive throughout, and she took our drink order and told us the specials. They were a 28oz Porterhouse, Surf and Turf of Grilled shrimp, and Shrimp & Grits. My wife and I both ordered the 12oz Ribeye and my son ordered the Porterhouse! As weird as it may be to add, their baked potatoes were so good and perfect! Usually we end up at other places with a wrinkled up hard excuse for a potato J/S! My wife got the Mac & Cheese and it was a plentiful side! We received plates for the Salad Bar which had everything you could ask for to make a great Salad. We also ordered the pimento cheese bites, the French onion soup and the Calamari.Get the French onion soup, it's the best and I order french onion often everywhere I go! I think if you're on the fence about coming here, try it once, everything was wonderful and Jeff the owner came around to all the patrons several times to check on everyone, that was really nice and we asked him of the history which is quite interesting. Okay so some of these reviews didn't get the dessert and it shows. First time visitor and it was delicious. The salad bar was weird for me and gave me the ick but I still tried it. I love the variety of items on the bar. I ordered the salmon and it was delicious. The portions were more than I expected but delicious nonetheless. I was full but still ordered dessert. I got the Chocolate Tuxedo Bombe . OMG IT WAS DELICIOUS. Literally it took everything for me not to consume it all. If you had a bad experience get the dessert you won't be disappointed. Had reservations 4:30. Got there about 4:00 they opened the doors and took our name and then text saying our table was ready. I ordered a 12oz ribeye and my husband ordered the prime rib 14oz. He had baked potatoe and salad I had looked like home fries made from scratch. Could have been cooked a little longer but was good. And I had a salad. It was a little better than "ok" in our book. We all give it a 3 out of 5 stars. My husband and I are not meat eaters (well, he will, but he prefers not). It was his birthday, so he chose it based on the salad bar reviews. When we arrived, I made sure to mention to the hosts that it was his birthday, which they acknowledged quietly. I expected that word would be passed in and they would celebrate him appropriately. Be warned that they open at 5:00, but they don't start seating and serving food until 6:00. We arrived hungry at 5:00 but were told we had to wait an hour. We walked to the nearby Thai restaurant for starters, since Peddler only offers party mix and drinks during this hour (and we are not drinkers). We returned before 6:00 and there were a number of others now waiting and playing checkers on their giant checker board. The salad bar was good, but nothing so special. I guess it's a matter of perspective, as we come from a big city with entire restaurants devoted to making great salads. They have just started making Brussel sprouts, which are a favorite of mine, so I had to get them. They were good, but something was not quite right about them...too sweet maybe? But still good, and worth a try if you are up for Brussel sprouts. Our daughter said her chicken breast was dry and the chicken she gets in her college cafeteria is better. Our son had the steak and said it was "ok." My baked potato was dense in texture, as if it had been sitting for a while, despite our having arrived early. Our waitress was good, kind, and competent... although when I asked for a glass of Pellegrino, she handed me the wine menu . When I explain that Pellegrino was sparkling water, she said they didn't have it... but they had "the other one...?" I had to supply the name "Perrier?" At the end of our meal, as we were leaving, I mentioned to her that it was my husband's birthday. She said "Oh you should have told me! We have a special treat for birthdays." I told her that I told the hostesses, but she said they had not mentioned it. We all loved the old house, and the woodsy view where we were seated... but, it also felt like we were seated at the kiddie tables, because they had cheap plastic tables out there. It might have pulled more stars if they had splurged to have the same kind of tables on the terrace area. Maybe it would have made it too heavy with the wooden tables, I don't know. We felt it was as a bit over priced for the quality offered. The charming building itself is made of locally gathered stones and has an interesting history. The food is always great. You have great selection at salad bar and you choose what size steak, etc you want. It' a very homey and laid back atmosphere. Never had a problem with service. Our go-to place for our anniversaries before my husband passed away. We both loved it. Good variety on menu and food is always cooked to order. Always packed. Decor very rustic but not tacky. Would highly recommend if want good, but not pretentious at all. Can just relax and enjoy. Prices very reasonable. With no cocktails, two can dine for less than $75 + tip. read more

Went to dinner, first time to a Peddler in 39 years, last time was at a Peddler in Durham, NC. Worst meal I have had since moving to Greenville, SC 8 years ago. Salad bar looked tired. The Prime Rib and the Ribeye Steak were ice cold as well as the twice baked potato, which was supposed to be a special. Rolls were good and the server pleasant. I've always loved The Peddler. In a world full of chain restaurants, this is one of a kind.

We had a choice to go "downtown" or to the Peddler. My significant other and I decided for The Peddler. The ambiance was great along with the salad bar which has a huge variety of items to choose from. The dressings are all made in house. For dinner I had the 12oz ribeye cooked medium rare with a baked sweet potato. It was $36.00 including the salad bar. For a top graded choice steak, heavily marbled is a great price. That steak downtown would be close to $60.00. The service was on point and the wine selection is great and not overpriced (a bottle of Caymus is $135.00, and they have many bottles of wine around $50.00). For dessert I had the Apple Blossom with ice cream and caramel sauce. The service was on point, and I will return for a great dining experience at The Peddler! read more

While in town for a funeral, we decided to head to The Peddler Steak House for a "fancy" dinner. I called ahead and the girl seemed overwhelmed when she answered the phone. I asked how long of a wait it would be, and she said, " A good while". We were about to go elsewhere, but decided to take our chances. When we arrived, about 15 minutes after I called, there wasn't even a wait. We got a table right away. The man who took us to our table was very kind. The inside of the restaurant is really cool. The food- that's where it gets a 3 star. The rolls- meh, had better. The salad bar was good, probably the best part of the dinner- but I made the salad. The steak, I got a filet mignon - tasted like cheap grocery store steak. Overall, not good for what we paid. Besides that, the plates the waitress brought us for the salad bar were dirty. She had to go get new ones. For the price you pay, not worth it to me. I've had better steak at chain restaurants. read more
