A long day at the Animal Sanctuary and we were starving for some food, my trusty Yelp app pleased me yet again and led us the Pepper Pod. Dare I say we were the only ones in the parking lot in a non-pickup truck. I felt singled out as the non-truck people. Don't judge locals, you'll still love me. The interior is definitely a bit dated, animal heads on the walls and dark wood interior finishes the cozy inside. We had two margarita's that were refreshing and there was no doubt tequila was being used. I hate getting a drink and don't feel like I'm getting any alcohol at all, that's not the case here. Mom decided on the Turkey Special of the day and I decided on the Beth's Junk Burger (no substitutions). The Turkey Special came with the soup of the day and one pass at the salad bar. Nothing special on the salad bar, the French dressing seemed homemade which was a definite positive. Entrees came and we both were very pleased. The Beth's Junk Burger seemed to be something the Pepper Pod is known for and was delicious to say the least. The meat was flavored and the toppings piled on top made each bite divine. Passable for highway food. Took a trip out here today because it was up the road and had relatively high Yelp stars for this type of place. Gravel parking lot in front with access to the restaurant only being marked by an OPEN sign near one of the doors. Friendly service inside the restaurant though a small sign taped to one of the pictures on the wall as you enter reminds you to turn off your cell phone ringer. Sat down and noticed some stray flies inside the restaurant. Isn't there some kind of health code on that? Annoying to have to keep swatting away flies as you eat. I ordered a basic burger and fries and a side of onion rings. Basically if a place can make a great burger chances are they will excel in other areas. Sadly I was not asked how I wanted my burger cooked. This translated into a burger that was as grey inside as outside. It was moist, and had some flavor, but a wee bit overdone. I'm hoping the fries were not homemade because they tasted like Ore-Ida shoe strings. The onion rings were interesting. First, they were large, and a small order had about 8 huge rings. I hate to see the large. The onion was fresh but the batter had no flavor - it tasted like it was tempura based. The rings were loaded with grease - way overloaded. No one really came back to check on me once the food was delivered so my drink glass remained empty. My table was sticky with syrup - like they used the same dishrag from breakfast cleanup to wipe down my table. My seat had something on it and the host simply brushed it off onto the floor instead of picking it up and disposing of it properly. For this privilege I paid $12.80 before tip. My husband saw the Pepper Pod a few times as he drove by, however we'd never stopped. We ended up having a date weekend and were headed out to the Animal Conservatory and decided to stop in. I was really glad we did! First of all: The parking lot, full of more pot holes than cars and more trucks than people. It's a good old, small town establishment and if they spend the money on asphalt it might affect the good food. So I say, Leave the dirt, mud puddles and keep the food delicious! Staff is great. Some of them look like they have been there since it opened, however they work their butts off and I can't complain. My husband and I went on a Sunday and I was worried about the church traffic. Not bad, we had no wait. Now for the food: Appetizers: Green chili covered potato skins: Good. However the green chili NEEDS to stand alone, toss out the potato skins and JUST eat the chili. Which leads me to my next appetizer. Green Chili con Queso: Really is just a bowl of green chili and some shredded cheese over the top. Forget the chips and the other people you are sharing with. Grab a spoon, pull the bowl towards you and eat away! This stuff needs to be boxed up and brought home with me. Meal: I had a problem choosing between the Chicken fried steak and fried chicken. But when I asked the waitress she said, "My Momma comes in every Sunday and gets it to take home for dinner. Every Sunday". As a small town girl myself, I wasn't going to go against her Mother's advice. My advice to you: GET THE FRIED CHICKEN (and then bring me some. My boy friend and I wanted to get out of Denver traffic before we grabbed a bite to eat for our road trip, and I was worried all we would find would be McDonalds or subway. Luckily this restaurant showed up on my yelp search. As a spoiled, city, foody type, I get apprehensive going to small town, hole in the wall places - but pepper pod is nothing to fear! This place has a traditional American Midwest, homey feel to it, the kind of feel that is lacking in the way too prevelant food chain restaurants these days. Got the beef tips over noodles. It was okay, beef was tough, and the sauce was a bit bland, but I should have asked what was in the sauce. Soup of the day was okay. Salad had some good topping options. Bathroom was surprisingly clean and presentable. A real step back in time. This reminds me of restaurants 20 years ago. The salad bar and creamy soup is nostalgic. Decor: you can tell it's been there for a while, so things are a little old and worn, but still good. It's very brown and wood all over, but it's comfortable enough. They have a bar/pub area too. Food: - Rocky Mountain Oysters: My friend 'tricked' us into eating this without telling us what they were. Buttt, I did try a few and while they claim that they make the best ones.. I wouldn't know since I don't have a comparison, but I didn't think too fondly of them. They were just fried...things. - French Dip: also so-so. The portion was big and the au jus was delicious, but it was by far not the best one I've had. - Fries: I like these; they're stringy and crispy. mMMm. As a fifth generation native, I have been coming to the Pepper Pod for years, more times than I can count! However yesterday was the last. When the waitress plants herself at your table and starts a political discussion smack talking the LGBTQ community, that's where I draw the line. Number one, your statements were way out of line, and number two, it is beyond unprofessional to interrupt your customers meal with your political crap. You have no idea what your customers political beliefs are, and I was DEEPLY, PERSONALLY insulted by your words, having friends that are in the LGBTQ and trans societies. We were trying to enjoy a breakfast before a nice motorcycle ride on the first nice day this year, and the waitress put a real black spot on the day. Shame on you! Blink and you'll miss it! Very happy to find this hole in the wall on our way home from a wonderful visit to the Wild Animal Sanctuary. There isn't much else in these parts (though the Mexican "shed" a block away looked rather interesting), so based on the solid reviews (and our rumbling tummies) we decided to give it a whirl. It wasn't a bad decision. Not the best patty melt I've had in my life (onions were....off, somehow), but I appreciated the choice of fresh, local ingredients in many of their menu items and the service was very friendly and prompt. It's a good option next time you find yourself in Hudson (and you should find yourself there, if for no other reason than to visit the Animal Sanctuary! ;-) read more

First time here. Parking was weird because you just drive anywhere off the street and park there. Walking into the restaurant, my nose was assaulted by a bad smell and I almost turned around and walked out. I had read the great reviews and decided to try the food anyway. I ordered the fish and chips on this fine Friday night, along with broccoli cheese soup. The cheese in the soup tasted like the fake cheese used in stadium nachos, but the chunks of brocolli were real. The fried fish was OK. Soggy, greasy but OK. Fries were also Soggy and greasy. Not OK and I was unable to eat them. 2 pieces of not great fish and inedible fries cost more than $14. I can get more fish filets prepared better for less money at many places. The restaurant is in desperate need of updating. The carpet worn, the wall heat registers bent and filthy dirty. That Terrible stench in the restaurant continue throughout the meal. Not everything was bad. The service was fantastic and the butterscotch pie was good. I won't be back. read more

We had the sirloin dinner for two and there is enough to feed 4. Lots of great leftovers. It's set in a rustic feel but it's clean. I've had breakfast here before and it was quick and tasty. Those of you who read my reviews, know I am usually pretty harsh on the Denver food scene as even to get some pre-made chicken and rice takes a solid 15 minutes and also the grocery stores are terrible and there is no produce. Anyway, this restaurant made me wish I was eating in Denver. The saga all began when my boyfriend and I decided to go to Jessica Biel's Wildlife Sanctuary. Before we left I decided to take the second and a half dab of my life. There's some debate whether the dab was too big or whether it's a Butane vs Enail issue, but I was way too high for my comfort zone and then I became very nauseous in the car. Even though I was very stoned and confused I do recall that my boyfriend was very unhappy with his food and mine was also meh. I had a buffalo chicken sandwich and it came on a ciabatta roll which was a flavor that doesn't go with buffalo chicken. The only reason we were there was because we were going to the Jessica Biel Animal Adventure and by the time we finally got out of this restaurant, it was too late to go as it is almost an hour drive back to our house and I had to be at work at 5 so it wouldn't be worth spending $30 to go in the park for 20 minutes. We were also held up by the fact that before going to Pepper Pod, we stopped at the only other local eatery and they ignored us for 12 minutes after bringing us a glass of water which we waited 5 minutes for. Positives about the Pepper Pod, they have wooden 70s style chairs and decor and the chairs are all engraved with the restaurant name. Someday we will get to the Jessica Biel Wild Animal Adventure Park and I will even pay for my boyfriend's ticket because this is the second weekend in a row we have tried and failed to get there. read more

I really wanted to love this place as my dad was a frequent customer in the '50's. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed. I had the brisket special which was an exceptionally small portion of meat that had obviously been in the warmer for quite some time. Fortunately, the flavor was good and the sauce was able to overcome the dryness. The side of onion rings were the most beautifully battered I have ever seen but the only thing I could taste was the cooking grease. Had lots of grisle and was overcooked a little. The one thing that was good were the Rocky Mnt. Oysters. I had never tried them before but they were very tasty. Off the beaten path for most Yelpers. I stopped in on my way back from Nebraska and was pleasantly surprised. This place has some history behind it and if shows in the decorations and furniture (in a good, authentic way). I sat at the bar, the bartender was friendly and attentive making sure I had everything I needed. Decided to order the pork chop special with a side of mashers with brown gravy. The. food came out in about 12 minutes, which was long enough for me to enjoy one trip to the salad bar. The chops were tender and well seasoned. The mash potatoes were whipped, and the brown gravy was a bit peppery. I suppose that is why they call it the Pepper Pod. I'd definitely stop by the next time I'm in town. read more

The food was decent for the price, the steak that we purchased was very bland. It also was over-cooked and believe it or not was cut into to see if it was done. The atmosphere is quaint as it is over 100 years old, they do need more servers as it left us with less than desirable service. Comfort food in casual setting served with a smile in Hudson just off highway 52. One reason to come to this venerable 103 year old place - the cook meat right. Aged on site and cooked just right. We had the special that day Swiss steak with real mashers no instant. More a pot roast it was delicate flaking off in bites with no pressure from the fork and was rich with flavor. The chicken breast on my wife's sandwich was seasoned well and moist not overdone. Our daughter savored her 2 pork chops. At first impression, it is badly in need of a general spruce-up... better yet, a complete rennovation. But worse than that, it was dirty. Both of the straws came in torn, unsealed wrappers. I asked the waitress for sealed ones. I ordered the "fresh cod sandwich" with fries. My wife ordered the "turkey, ham and swiss croissant." After a long wait for the food, the piece of cod on my sandwich was about 60% fried batter, not much cod. The fries were good. My wife's "turkey, ham and swiss" croissant had no turkey on it. Now this is the weirdest thing, and a first in my experience... the ketchup seemed watered down! Even after a thorough shaking, it had the thinnest consistency of any ketchup I've ever seen. It came in a well-worn (used and reused) Heinz plastic bottle. I've had Heinz ketchup many times. It has always been way thicker. My wife did get a small $$ credit for the lack of turkey on the croissant. Oddly, the place was fairly busy! Based on this fact you might conclude that we are picky food snobs. Nothing could be further from the truth! We are easy to please and have reasonable expectations from a low/moderately priced locally-owned place. All we expect is decent food and service, and a clean, insect-free environment. Of those, only the service was passable. Man this family owned & ran business is awesome. PEPPER POD has history dating back to the early 1900's, maybe even longer. It's nice to go to a restaurant knowing what your ordering is raised & or grown right here in Hudson Co. No store bought items...the beef they raise & I tell you, the flavor is to die for. It's aged perfectly! They serve pork chops there that are always supper moist...wish someone would share their secret. Breakfast is right on! When you stop in make sure you order their "french toast". They use sour dough & the portion is huge with a choice of meat. I get the bacon & it's not cheap & flimsy it's thick and flavorful. I can't say enough. ..I love everything I've tried to this date & recommend anyone driving thru the northeast end of Colorado stop in, but make sure you have an empty stomach. Upon entering, the hostess was very nice and me and my wife were seated immediately. The young lady that took our initial drink order was so nervous I almost felt bad for her, hope it was just her first day and not an ongoing thing. We decide to split an order of chicken finger and were surprised to find that they were highly proceeded and came with absolutely NO garnishment of any kind...costing a few pennies short or 9.00$. We were seated by the buffet in the front room with has direct line of sight to what seems to be the main servers station...while the seating was fine, there was a STEADY stream of profanity and gossip flowing from the servers station(f*** this and f*** that and can you believe that Bit** did this or that...) Our waitress was courteous and our food came swiftly, which is always important to us. I cannot say there was anything about this restaurant that would draw us back for a follow up visit.
