ANOTHER LITTLE ROADSIDE ATTRACTION plus good food! If you just drove by on the street you would most likely not look up and think "oh I'd love to eat there". The pitstop is a rather nondescript exterior place next to a old motel that you can't tell if it's open or not (but it is). Once inside it is an extraordinarily clean, step back in time. Tons of memorabilia all displayed with a sense of humor. You can look in the same direction 5 times and see something different each time. I particularly delighted in the fact that everything was clean and dusted even though there were old-fashioned bottles and knickknacks there was not dust on them. It's part rock 'n' roll and part car parts with counter that appear to be original to the building (round pieces of wood on pedestals) and quaint old wooden booths. The staff were all comfortable and relaxed with customers. The main waitress, Kimber, was very pleasant and easy to converse with she waited on us immediately intended to everything quickly. She even likes to keep the coffee cups in a little warmer because the ceramic gets cold so quickly. We all had traditional breakfast either bacon or sausage and eggs and our son had an omelette. Everything was hot, fresh, cooked perfectly and delicious. I didn't want to leave a three star or a four, so this is really 3 1/2*. The food was good despite getting a couple of things in my order wrong. The service was good, the atmosphere, ok. It is next to a less than one star motel, and around the corner from a truck stop. I would describe it as a trucker diner, and an easy and good stop for truckers. They open at 7 and close at 3pm, so they only serve breakfast and some brunch/lunch items. We went there for the Indian tacos, shortly after noon, and were told they were "out". Yet, around that time, they advertised them on social media, and again, an hour later. Bit disappointed in that. Not a five star review because the food was good, but nothing to jump up and holler about. Not a four, because the place felt old and dusty - the more "stuff" you have on the walls, the more dust accumulates, the more there is to clean or sneeze at - the seats were torn, and it just seemed like nothing in the place newer than the 80s. Not much to look at outside but don't let that stop you. The breakfast and service are top shelf. From the 2.92 special(yeah you read that right) , to the daily 5.99 special with their delicious sausage, to the best Denver omelette we ever had we were never were disappointed. Just as you would expect, it's a great place to stop when on the higway. Their hours are very accomodating to travelers and it's very family friendly, in fact last time we stopped here before heading to The Grand Canyon there were the cutest little girls doing jumprope games like on a playground, something I had not seen for many years. Came here as a recommendation, finally, and I'm wondering how I've never stopped in before. I wish I had because I feel like I've been missing out and I've driven by a lot. It's a "greasy spoon" diner with great breakfast, real hash browns, real sausage, with great service and an excellent kitchen staff. Highly recommend if passing through on I-10. Very nice, clean, yet nostalgic little cafe. You see an old jukebox when you enter and I was greeted right away by the waitress who told me to sit anywhere. They have counter seating like an old diner, but I opted for a booth. There are old posters and gas station signs, motor oil ads all over the wall, nothing dusty. It was a wistful experience for me because I felt I was eating at my Tia Julia's house. I ordered the huevos rancheros Christmas style and my friend ordered the New Mexican omelet. Both were fantastic. Everything was fresh and homemade. The green chile was hot and flavorful. It tasted like it was fresh roasted. I think in tasted rosemary in there, which actually complimented the chile. The red was not too hot and had that beautiful earthy flavor and gorgeous red color. Maybe I should've taken a picture, but I was so hungry that when it came to the table, I dug right in. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Coffee was fine, service was outstanding and food off the chart. I am an Uber eats driver and had a recent delivery from this place. When I arrived, it had the look of a small, humble roadside dive from a bygone area, in an isolated part of town. The party that ordered the food was staying in a hotel a few miles away. The smell of the food perfumed my car on the way to the delivery. I began to research the place and realized it had a small cult following. Out of curiosity my son and I dined there last night. My son had the combination plate and I had the burrito banado with red. Mine was just about the spiciest meal I have ever had. It was wonderful, but painful. The real gem was my son's combination plate, which was incredibly flavorful. All three were sublime: the green tamale, the enchilada, but I think the chile con carne was the best of what was on his plate. Las Cruces has always had three premier destinations to us: El Sombrero, Chachi's, and Andele Dog House. The Pit Stop Cafe now joins that list for us. read more

My wife and I stopped in for lunch today at the Pit Stop Cafe. It was an interesting experience, since we stayed in the RV Park, adjoining the cafe, in 1987. We think that we also ate in this restaurant, name might have been different then. I am sure the owners are new. I had the jumbo cheeseburger with green chiles and french fries, and my wife had the patty melt and fries. Both meals were good. Service was excellent. Would return again. read more

After reading reviews and being personally recommended to eat here by a local, we have it a try. Dined in for late breakfast (11:15am) and they gave us the standard lunch menus. We asked if we could still order breakfast and the server checked with the kitchen and they said sure! So we each had a delicious omelet with sides. My omelet was delightful with green chili's and onions but I think next time I'd skip the hash browns and order the home fries. Friendly server and very accommodating! The Pit Stop 292 Cafe is ranked 27th on the 2018 Mr. Sensitive list of Mexican food restaurants around town. The Pit Stop is a restaurant that serves New Mexican/Southwestern and American food. Inside there are two rooms with one having a bar and booths and the other a couple booths with tables and chairs. The chairs are of the cheaper banquet variety. The walls of the cafe are covered with all kinds of "stuff." Some may like this atmosphere and some may not. This place is for very casual dining only. It is not a thrilling place to dine. The last time I was there, in March 2018 for lunch, the only other customers present were seventy-five year old locals....mostly agricultural types coming in in their pickups. The place seems basically clean and well lighted. The waitresses who have served me over the years here have always been less than stellar. Not poor, but just sort of "doing my job." I had some pretty poor meals served here before the current owner took over in 2015. Things have improved since then. The food is not only somewhat better now in 2018 but the place seems a little cleaner. In March 2018 I ordered their BATHED BURRITO BREAKFAST which came with home fries and two eggs. The potatoes were crisp and not greasy. They had a decent flavor. Although I ordered my eggs over-medium and not runny.....inevitably as with other places....they came with runny yolks. The eggs were laying over the burrito which had green chile con carne inside. The beef did not have much flavor and the chile, while higher on the heat scale, seemed to have little flavor also. The chile was not properly strained before being placed in the burrito and, consequently, the burrito was sitting in water.....something that really ticks me off. All-in-all, another less than stellar meal at the Pit Stop. What to expect if you go: A casual dining area with just so-so and somewhat indifferent service, lots of junk littering the walls, and food that ranges anywhere from below the norm to just ok. Lunch is good. Excellent ("old school style") cheeseburgers. Delicious milkshakes. Other plates passing us (en route to other tables) are also nicely prepared and generous. HOWEVER: Spouse and I have not been overly happy with breakfasts (three or four) we've had. On one occasion "the buttermilk pancakes" (part of a breakfast special) were obviously ready-made store bought (frozen/pop into toaster). *FROWN* Absolutely unforgivable, considering the "just add water and whisk" box mixes available. Another positive note: Retro Americana interior. Good vibes, friendly waitstaff, quick service. We likely won't bother with breakfast here again, but WILL return for the delicious cheeseburgers, Mexican plates, and milkshakes. read more
