The Q is right off the road in what looks like an old Dairy Queen. It is pretty sweet that there is BBQ in Fort Bragg. I was impressed with the sauces on the table to accompany the bbq meats and sandos. I had the blackened fish sando and it was tasty. I actually didn't get any of the bbq but it smelled good. Does that count? Probably not. SO this is not a review for the meats. I would skip the chowder unless you like super creamy chowder with bacon. Don't get me wrong bacon is everyones friend. In this case the cream takes the over and the bacon is lost. Can you imagine a dish where you can't taste the bacon. Well try.....Yup that is what this was creamy clam chowder with lots of cream. The Mac N' Cheese is uh-mazzzzing. Love that stuff. I would go to The Q just to order it; I don't even need the meat. That being said, I would say the BBQ here is above average. The meat is not dry (which is more than I can say for most "q" joints I've been to), but it also isn't particularly tender. I do enjoy the BBQ sauce though, especially the Carolina tangy sauce; My girlfriend liked the sweet sauce. They also rep North Coast Brewery to the max here so if you're looking for a nice cold one of Scrimshaw or Blue Star, this is your place. The owners here are friendly and accommodating. Good place for BBQ. Restaurant wasn't too busy when we visited on a Saturday evening. You place your order at the front desk and pick it up when it is ready. We had the salmon special with a choice of sides and also a combo meal with fish, ribs, and other meat with two sides. Note that the sweet beans is not vegetarian, but the chili is vegetarian. I received the wrong information from the cashier. My husband liked the ribs since the meat was tender. He usually doesn't like to deal with bones. Tap water is available for a $.75 charge. I just visited home for a few days ( I live in LA now since having graduated college, but my family still lives in Mendocino). As always, whenever there is a new restaurant in town we have to go check it out. I got the blackened fish with a side of macaroni and cheese and both were really good (Macaroni being great!). My cousin and grandma got the caesar salad with blackened fish and the portion size was really big, so that's always a plus too. Unfortunately, they weren't serving raw oysters on the half shell when we went and we ended up trying the smoked oysters.....YUCK. They were so gross :( That was the only downfall. I'm sure i'll go back when I visit home again next time though! Got delivery food here via food runners while vacationing June 2021. Delivery process was easy. App has accurate menu and prices and was rather fast. Maybe 40-45 minutes. Food was great! Like a state fair turkey leg large. Amazing and delicious. Fish was well seasoned and was just as good the next day (wife and I split everything and had so much left for the next day). We did overhear the worker talking about a large catering party the next day and someone new in the kitchen. The hoodie girl serving was a bundle of serving joy - NOT. The burrito was okay - at least there was enough liquid from the chili beans used in the burrito to ease the dryness of the beef brisket. My daughter got the kids pork spare ribs and if all the ribs gotten in the dinner party hers were the juiciest. The beef brisket gotten as part of the rib basket was dried out. Came to FB for a weekend getaway and was craving some good clan chowder and was let down at some other restaurants this weekend but alas on our way out of town, stopped at The Q and their clan chowder is the bomb! (They had me convinced even before I tasted it considering the ample sprinkling of bacon on top!) It's the best chowder in town in my opinion. With the cold off shore winds and often foggy nights, a big heap of Q seems the right way to settle in and make one's self happy. The blackened cod fish was tender, moist and served with a subtle sauce that was an impressive experience. The side dishes, whether mac n cheese, beans, rings, were amazingly good. The ribs and brisket seemed like they wandered into the warmer parts of the pit and on another day would have been tender and moist and bursting with flavor. The mac and cheese was flavorful but a bit dry. My son had grilled shrimp, which he said was tasty and satisfying. My husband opted for the fish and chips which was blackened, not fried and he really enjoyed his dish. My son's friend had the pulled pork sandwich and for being a picky eater, he said it was very good. While eating lunch, in the nearby field, we saw two deer wandering around and grazing. The mac and cheese was super cheesy (a big plus in my book) with what seemed like some breading and bubbled topping...I assume it was baked. Went here for the first time last night. You order at the counter and they serve your food. We both ordered the brisket and were very pleased. We also had the baked beans, which were not so overly sweetened and absolutely delicious. I also had a side of cole slaw, which was very good, despite what a "certified KC BBQ judge," said below. Also, half orders are about 2/3rds the size of full orders. I had a half order of brisket, which was 8 oz. and my wife had a full order, which was 12 oz. I also ordered bread pudding for dessert and while it wasn't bad, it was mediocre. If you like chocolate chips in you your bread pudding, which is okay, then you'll like this. The sauce was so-so, but overall it wasn't bad. I just like more of a cinnamon taste when eating such a dessert. The only bad thing was, that my wife's brisket had one small slice of meat, which wasn't properly cooked. We're not sure how that happened, but it did. When she showed the piece of meat to the lady (owner?), who took our order, she said all of the brisket is cooked to medium-well. True, but not that one piece. All she had to do, was remove the undercooked slice and replace it with another one. Bad call on her part. Other than that, she was very friendly. This a rustic type of place with heat lamps in front, where they enclosed a patio and tacked on corrugated metal roof panels. The brisket was lacking flavors typically associated from a top notch bbq place. There was a slight hint of smoky flavor, but the meat flavor was bland, probably from being cooked medium well to well. The bbq sauce selection was decent, and the combination of their house Memphis Sweet and Spicy Hot bbq sauces added a lot to the dish. The side I ordered was the potato salad. It tasted premade from a container, like something youd find in a supermarket. Overall, average bbq place. Price slightly higher than average, probably due to location. 3 stars. read more
