Yes. I found my fresh bread place:) Now, bread doesn't do my body good, but if you must do bread, it had better be good. The garlic bread has chunks (I do mean chunks) of real garlic. You can truly see the chunks of garlic in the slices. It tastes like it's been prebuttered. Hubby tasted it lightly roasted and raved about it too. On my way to pick up a jalapeno loaf. "Details at eleven". Customer service is just incredible. Appears to be family owned. Oh, and you may want to call in the morning to order garlic and jalapeno loaves. They will hold them for you, otherwise??? Location is somewhat hard to find because of road construction. Bakery faces East in a small strip mall at the North/West corner of 15th Street and Campus in a small strip mall, but current construction makes travel difficult. read more

My husband and I bought a couple of scones from their booth at the Claremont farmers market and I must say- best scones ever! They were delicious and moist and made with a few simple ingredients. A short anecdote... I grew up a couple of blocks away from Boudin's on 10th and Geary in SF so I can relate to fresh bread. As a youth, my friends and I ran off with a fresh sourdough bread round once tucked under the front of our jackets as we walked by the open rollup doors and snatched them from their cooling racks and bolted up the street. One of my friends who was with me would find me years later on FB and told me that his son wanted to meet the infamous bread thief that he had heard of so often before... I'm sure that salty, crusty taste of Boudin is due to the mild SF climate and the mother yeast that it is proofed from. The people at the Rustic Loaf go through a similar process I'm sure to come up with their artisan breads. I know that they deliver to Claro's among other markets, so I can get it without too much trouble, but it's nice to be able to get it sometimes from the source. The Upland store is small, modest, clean, and cute; not as production looking as Old Town Baking Company's store. I took the last rye bread and it was around 300pm on a Thursday so it may be good to call ahead to check. The person helping me was friendly. At $6 it was a little pricey for a small round of bread, but when we used it the results were superb... I was there for the (sourdough) rye bread, but I might return to try their regular French Sourdough, or perhaps the Asiago Sourdough which sounds good... ***** Edit 032713 ***** I just learned that not every Claro's carries all of Rustic Loafs breads, best to call ahead to see what they carry; since they make deliveries every week, you can special order and tell them to bring it during the next delivery. I got married a few weeks ago at my mom's house in California and realized we needed a BUNCH of bread for the cocktail hour and reception. After a tip from the peeps at the Cheese Cave about the Rustic Loaf having the best bread, my bridesmaids and I piled in the car and headed over. I walked in and asked if they could give me 40-50 loaves of bread now. I explained that I was getting married and had completely forgotten to take care of the bread aspect of things and if there was any way they could help me out, I'd be most appreciative. The owner, a cheerful and easy-to-talk to man, sang his congratulations for the impending nuptuals and gifted me some AMAZING tapenade. Then, he not only filled my order (I had apparently lucked out as they got rained out of the Farmer's market that day and I got all that bread!), but he gave me an additional 10% "happy wedding!" discount, bagged everything up, then boxed THAT up, and then wished us even more happiness. Yum yum yum yum!!! I'm so glad that I was referred by a coworker to come to this place while in town. The place is small and focuses on bread and scones. I was told to get the scones, so I loaded up. Lemme just say, these scones are baked with some magical ingredient! They are extremely soft and are almost cookie like. I told myself I was only going to eat half of one on the way home, but ended up eating the whole thing because it was so good. I also picked up cinnamon raisin bread. I also couldn't wait and had a piece before leaving the place. I came by around 11am, and there were a few breads already sold out. As a carb aholic, I was sooo excited when I spotted this shop in the same strip mall as my hair salon. I made a beeline for this place right after my appointment, and had a difficult time choosing what kind of bread to buy -- all of them sounded wonderful. Ultimately, I chose the lemon rosemary sourdough but was a little disappointed that the flavor was not infused throughout the loaf. The texture was great, soft on the inside, and chewy on the outside, but I could only get the lemon rosemary flavor from one spot that sat on the outside center of the crust. Sigh! This is a super cool shop with excellent home made bread... they have super killer scones (which i normally hate because they are hard and gross) but these a flaky little delights... people are really nice too. I've been craving artisan bread and found this place on yelp. The lady in the store was super sweet and friendly. I tasted the multigrain whole wheat, jalapeno, harvest and garlic. All are good but I bought multigrain whole wheat eventually since I preferred mild flavor and nutty texture. Will come back for sure! read more

My family loves this bakery! First the sour dough bread is amazing! I'm sensitive to gluten, not allergic and this bread does not bother my stomach. We also get their peanut butter cookies. These are the best ever! They are super moist in the inside and not super sweet like most peanut butter cookies, with a nice rich taste. They are also at the Claremont Farmers market on Sundays. I have had four different loaves from them now (on two occasions), and their bread is pretty good. I have to say, to start off, that they are very friendly! It is a bit of a trek to go to Upland, but luckily they sell in some retail stores and also show up at farmer's markets. Sometimes they run out of the bread you want. The good news is that their other varieties are good as well. The loaves are fairly small and are somewhat pricey for their size. You also will not get anything that will knock your socks off for flavor. A good, solid, workaday bread. Now, to the loaves! Their Country is very much in the San Francisco tradition rather than the French one. Now, I have always been a big fan of SF sourdough, so that is not a problem. It is pretty heavy. Crumb is pretty good, but even so the bread is somewhat dense and needs to be sliced thinly. But it does not like being sliced thinly so much - this is a hard task, even with a really sharp bread knife. It will tend to squish and then break apart. I made some pizza with it yesterday and a couple of the slices (sliced long ways) fell into parts on me. Definitely could be my fault, though I wield a bread knife rather often. Nice sourdough flavor. The Asiago is like the country but with some cubes of asiago cheese mixed in. Always nice when they burst on top and get browned while baking. Same comments as the country as for the bread character and quality. The asiago is a nice cheese to have in the loaves. The Rye is a nicely flavored loaf, although I must say it was pretty heavy. The rye is one of those fortitudinous breads - it requires you to chew a lot. It is very similar to the rye ("Black Forest") from Berolina Bakery in Montrose. A good loaf of bread, but not nearly as good as Seed's Whole Wheat Rye (which is their best bread, btw). Now, to my personal favorite type, the Whole Wheat Multigrain. I love whole wheat bread. Their's is pretty good. Definitely a more traditional WW bread - You'll notice its heft when you pick it up. Small loaf and packs a lot in it. Not just whole wheat, but has a number of different grains, like La Brea's whole wheat. Makes it somewhat heavier and more complex than straight whole wheat. I prefer a bit more simple of a loaf. Not something you make closed face sandwiches with - open faced is the way to go. read more

Have been getting bread at "The Rustic Loaf" for a while now...should have said something on yelp long ago; they're about as good as it gets. Have never had better bread in the U.S. (as far as I can remember). Costs a little more than an "artisan" loaf at Sprouts, etc., but MUCH better quality, more variety. Then again, a loaf of wonder bread is like $4 at the grocery store last time i checked.......so judging by weight, the bread here is probably cheaper than fake bread, actually. Employees are always super friendly and helpful, too. I DO wish they offered a rye loaf without caraway, but that's what Americans expect in rye bread, so can't complain about that (they have the rye on Fridays, and it is excellent - I always buy it, even with the seeds). I think they run a stand at all the local farmer's markets, too. If you go to the store in Upland, try to get there early because they do tend to run out of some varieties in the afternoon. read more

The cranberry walnut loaf is perfect even when you eat it a few days later (just make sure to wrap it up well with some wrap). It's not overly sweet or salty (La Brea, I am talking about you!). The flirtatious sweetness of the cranberry pieces and subtle nuttiness of walnuts are quite different from what I've experienced with other rustic breads--clean and simple, which may come off as bland. I've tried the Lemon Rosemary bread as well, it was sadly a loaf doused in olive oil, suppressing the beautiful rosemary and lemon flavors. Maybe it was an off-day for the baker preparing this particular bread. My verdict? For lemon rosemary bread, I'll probably go elsewhere. Short and sweet: - you feel less terrible and unhealthy because of the ingredients used - crusty outside, moist inside - not up to the quality of Zoe Nathan's baked goods - may disappoint those who are infatuated with Scarpetta's breadbasket - best served after you wrap it in saran wrap and microwave it for about 20-30 seconds the next day read more

The Best bread shop you'll find in this area, without a doubt. I visit them at least twice weekly to get thier great baguette. I've tried most of the loafs and never been disappointed. I have been buying their breads for years now. I have to say they make a really good loaf of European style bread.

This is serious. I don't like eating bread. Every brain cell fights bread and carbs daily. But I will happily make an exception if it's worth it; meaning you won't catch a crumb of wonder bread or store bought bread in my mouth. The bread they bake here is 100% worth every carb and calorie contained in it. The first time I went early around 8:00am and got a multi grain loaf. It was still warm. WARM!!! I have also tried the kalmata olive (sample) and garlic parmesan (full loaf) that were delicious. (I made grilled cheese and tomato soup with the garlic parmesan and it was heavenly.) The customer service is incredibly friendly and they have a punch card which they absolutely don't need because the loaves are priced really well. Bread. What once was the common staple of breakfast, lunch, and dinner has become a simple ingredient for sandwiches and toast. The Rustic Loaf changes all that. I came in to browse and ended up taking a few bites from the sample table. If my eyes were not attached, they would of rolled back and fell into the back of my head. The sourdough was outstanding and pairing it with the garlic infused olive oil was a match made in heaven. I purchased a loaf of sourdough and a bottle of the garlic olive oil and they sliced my bread for me. At home, I had a meal of just bread and olive oil. The bread itself was moist and soft with the perfect amount of sour flavor. The crust with its rich brown color was crisp. My family loved it. I can only imagine how delicious pairing it with pasta, soups, and sandwiches can be. You will want to eat this bread with every meal. I plan on returning to try out the other artisan breads and purchase more sourdough. This time, unsliced so I can make clam chowder sourdough bowls. read more

My brother told me about this place. I am sure glad he did! I asked the owner if he had any vegan bread. Yes I do he says. He points out the breads that would qualify. Not being the trusting type when it comes to what's in my food, I ask him if he can show me the ingredients in the flour. He looked a little bugged at this wierdo being so pushy but he goes and brings me the big bag of flour. 100 % wheat flour. I buy a bag of this lemon rosemary sourdough bread.
