Great food and atmosphere. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because of the lack of waiting space in this very busy restaurant.

We were in the area and unfamiliar with the local restaurants. Googled and found this gem. I had the chicken piccata and my husband had the veal parm: both were fantastic. The portions are great and all the sides. Believe me, you will have plenty of food: We also had the pepperoni rolls as an appetizer, delicious and fresh. I've only eaten here a few times and it usually gets rave reviews. Rave-worthy I'm not so sure, but here is my review. Service.. polite and friendly, and we got everything that we asked for... in due time. The wait between sit down and initial service was long, the time to get food after ordering was even longer. It was a Monday at 6:30 pm and it wasn't overly crowded. I do however realize that Covid-19 may have them with a short staff.... I guess?? Be sure to take your mobile phone, they're using online menus for ordering. There was only one paper menu per table, we were told to take it with us. I assume due to Covid-19 requirements of menus having to be disposable. Food... My Veal Parmigiano was beaten into a 3/16" piece of veal at its thickest with basically no meat or thick consistency. It was tough to cut with even tougher edges. There was no cutting this with a fork, oh no, it took a sharp knife and some sawing. The taste wasn't bad, but I expected better. The next day leftovers had me worried that I was sawing through the paper plate, it was that tough. My wife's chicken marsala was over salted and she didn't finish it. My son's large sized linguini fantasy was OK in spite of no visible signs of the advertised scallops. Overall I rate my experience 3/5. It was however nice to be able to sit down in a restaurant and eat with the surrounding counties open for take out only due to Covid-19. Oh and BTW, they don't take Discover card. Brought in a bunch of clients while in the area. Décor and setting were nice as it is located below street level and had exposed masonry and interesting historical prints of the area arranged around the walls. There was also a small bar area off the entrance. I went with the grilled tuna salad served with blue cheese, pear and walnuts over mixed greens. The tuna was obviously pre-frozen and did not have a great flavor. The salad was also arranged with everything unmixed which meant you had to combine it forkful by forkful. I would give two stars but the service was good and my guests enjoyed their meal. read more

I was so disappointed from last week's dining experience. The entree that i ordered was horrible. It was a seafood fantasy pasta. The noodles were over cooked and it was served with a red or white sauce and the server did not ask me which one that I wanted she just chose one for me and it was bland, watery and no flavor. I asked her to fix it for me and add the red sauce and it came out luke warm. She did not seem to care. I am in no hurry to go back. read more

We started with the fried zucchini, which came with two different sauces and was a great start. We ate a medium cheese pizza and a personal chicken artichoke. Both were excellent. Lovely & very comfortable. Had a long business day in Washington & my niece recommended this place. We arrived @ 5pm on a Friday night & the place was busy but we were seated right away. The hostess was pleasant and attentive. All of our food was well prepared & pleasant to the eye. The Fried Zucchini appetizer was great. The Wedding Soup and Lobster Bisque were great. The side salad was great. I only had one problem. The Delmonico steak I ordered was cooked perfectly & it was a nice size but there wasn't any seasoning on it... The Blackened Tuna was good... The Fried Shrimp we asked them to prepare it Scampi style & it was perfectly done. I would definitely return, but I would order something different as my main course. read more

Ambience: from the outside you would never think that they are open, much less go in! Divy outside for sure! But once inside, there is this rich feel of stone and wood. You have your choice of eating in the bar or at a table or booth. Very nice. Food: the Italian wedding soup was very good and the Rachel Reuben is made with coleslaw so it comes off as sweeter. Service: seated promptly even at lunchtime which is a real plus if you are working in the courthouse across the street. And the waitress checked back a couple of times. But she brings the bill without a folder so I got looking for the cashier and am told oh, no you pay your server. The signal is to bring the check in a folder! Otherwise, five stars. LOVE the Union Grill!! My favorite menu item is the lobster ravioli. Every time I order something different, I regret it and wish I had gotten the ravioli. Their home made red wine vinegarette salad dressing is amazing. The catch 22 about this amazing restaurant that everyone loves is there is always a long wait! Cool little place that is very cozy and has that low, but not too low, of lighting that makes everyone prettier haha! Ordered the fried provolone for an appetizer. Which is one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. If you want to drown yourself or anything else in delicious cheesy gooeyness then this is where to start. Served with homemade marinara which is fantastic. Wanted to stop eating it but I just couldn't. While still in pain from my fried wheel-o-cheese my side caesar salad arrived. Fresh lettuce and onion with parmesan, croutons, and anchovies. Not going to lie, I've never had anchovies on a salad, but those salty little bastards were exactly what I never knew I needed on a salad. And now ladies and gents for the Pièce de résistance the Stuffed New Yorker. First off it was just a pretty piece of meat. Swear it came out glowing lol. It's a 14oz strip stuffed with cheese and shrimp. I mean I feel like I don't have to say more, but I will. It was amazing!!! Cooked exactly how I ordered. Every single time I go here, I am never disappointed. I've gotten many things there and have always been impressed. Their cocktails are to die for! I love this place. It's my wild card when it's my turn to pick a restaurant among friends. It's definitely a hole in the wall but the place is super classy. Came here with a party of 4. We ordered an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The fried zucchini was SO YUMMY! Huge portions and great breading. There menu is a huge selection of Italian foods. We all ordered something different and there were mixed reviews. Mine and another person in my parties food was very bland and the other two said there's was delicious. When it came to dessert WOW! With The Union Grill close to my sister's house, it seemed like a likely spot for a lunch on the road. Union Grill may well be the apotheosis of all Western Pennsylvania Italian joints. Ads under the glass-topped table, Steeler game on the tv at the bar, big party room in the back (hosting a baby shower as we were being served); going there seemed as familiar as a well-worn recliner. But, you're not here for that. You want to know how the food is. And, all told? Not too shabby. Their wedding soup is tasty and hearty, served piping hot. The calzone I had was more than enough to keep me stuffed for the long drive home. I could have stood for a little more variety--or some marinara for dipping--but it was more than passable. Service at the Union seemed...somewhat off. I'm not sure if there was something going on beyond the baby shower in the other room, but there seemed to be a bit of confusion regarding our drink orders and with some of the entrees. Parking is on-street and limited. The Union Grill is an extremely casual place, the young lady host wearing blue jeans with gaping holes in them. My family and I spent two hours and twenty minutes at the restaurant on a crazed Monday night, more time than we ever stay at a meal. We waited more than a half hour for a table. There is only a small area for customers to sit while waiting, so we stood. Though she made contact with us prior to coming over, It was then more than fifteen minutes for our server to approach to take orders. Then it was forty minutes until our appetizer arrived. Soon thereafter, the entrees came. The server knew how long everything was taking and was kind enough to present us with two complimentary cups of wedding soup. She thanked us for our patience and noted that some customers are not like us. It took a long time to get the check as well. She was very pleasant and kind. The many bussers were the unsung heroes of the evening, doing everything they could for us within their authority. A gentleman who appears to be an owner was present throughout the evening and did a lot of work to keep things moving. He did not come to our table or express any regret for the delays in everything. If this had been my restaurant, I would have apologized to everyone and tried to reassure them that such long waits for everything is not a common occurrence. Cloth napkins are a nice touch, but they are presented on paper placemats. Most of our dishes were very good: provolone cheese appetizer (overpriced at $11.95), ravioli with alfredo sauce ($19.95), hamburger, french fries, Reuben sandwich (very good, but would be better with kosher-style corned beef which is used in the best Reuben sandwiches). The chips that accompanied the burger and sandwich were stale, a disappointment. On the strength of the dishes that we enjoyed, we may return on a night that we can risk being stranded in a restaurant for more than two hours. A classic choice for reliable food and service. I have dined at the Grill countless times and it rarely disappoints. It's old-school Italian food in a unique environment (basement). I typically order the Linguini Fantasy but everything is great. The specials are usually outstanding. Service is usually great but hit-or-miss as it is anywhere. Be prepared to wait on the weekends and they do not take reservations. Drinks are a bit pricey for the area, too. However, this is one of the best restaurants in Washington and makes a great pick for date-night or even a special occasion. Oh yeah - always order the fried zucchini! read more

We recently had a rehearsal luncheon here for our wedding. We reserved the back room and everything was truly perfect. We actually arrived a lot earlier than planned and they took us back with no worries or stress. They quickly made changes so the food would come out sooner also. The women taking care of us were all so very polite, efficient, and accommodating. The food was obviously amazing and everyone was full and happy. Stopped in for an early anniversary dinner with my wife, haven't been there in ages. Still great atmosphere , Our appettizer of Calamari was tremendous one of the better ones ive had in years. My wife had the filet mingon gorganzola , there was only 3 medallions and they were not very large. She said it was ok, nothing she would get againI had the veal romano, and it may have been arguably the top 2 most bland veal ive ever had. Couldn't understand why it had no flavor. The absolute top restaurant in Washington. The staff is friendly, the food is incredible, and the prices are decent. All in all if you were looking for a non-chain place to eat in the Washington area, this is definitely worth your time. The linguine fantasy is absolutely incredible and my wife loves the fried provolone which is a breaded cheesewheel with their signature pasta sauce as dip. Can not recommend this place enough. What a great ending to our mini getaway to Washington! Interesting place -under a building- inside was so inviting and warm. Absolutely loved the spicy banana pepper pasta. Chicken was overdone, but they brought me another piece that was wonderfully tender and juicy. The linguini fantasy my fiancé had was buttery and filled with tender crab. Came here for a large family dinner on a Friday night. The wait here is always long so that was to be expected, but the staff are so friendly and although there are crowds of people around waiting, they made sure to offer my grandma a chair. We waited for 45 minutes and were thankful to be seated and quickly greeted by a friendly waitress. We started with the fried zucchini with marinara which was quickly devoured, along with the Provolone cheese wheel which was so unique and elegant but resembled mozzarella sticks in some ways. The Caesar salad was great and had amazing croutons. The Rachel sandwich had really sweet coleslaw, which I loved and was triple stacked. For me, personally, it was too much meat and bread, but some people may enjoy it more. Our Waitress was so nice and helpful to our large party and the staff was super quick with water refills. My dad and I work together and call this our satellite office for good reason - I'm at "the Grill" at least three days a week. While Washington is a small town and the Union Grill is a local favorite, it is not a hole in the wall, by far. The food is of very high quality and the nightly specials show that the chefs have sophistication and range. The wine list is very provincial, but the bartenders are excellent and friendly to all. I would recommend a reservation on Friday and Saturday nights because the line literally can go out of the door! read more

This Monday at about 11am we were just looking for somewhere to eat while driving through the area. This place seemed to be the only place open. When walking in it definitely just looks like a whatever bar and grill. The servers and hostess were fairly rude, chucking menus on the table, rolling eyes and just making you feel unwelcome in general. After opening the menu and finding out that it was about $20 per person to eat we immediately left. The lack of personality and friendliness combined with the high prices was enough to drive us out. read more
