Ah, The Wienery. The best hole-in-the-wall (with a few holes in the actual wall,too) in Minneapolis. Don't expect right-away service during eating hours,(breakfast,lunch,dinner) Even at 2:00 the place is almost full with its 2 tables and about 15 wobbly stools. Now on to the food. Almost everything at The Wienery is great. But, My recomendations are... Drive-In Dog: Coleslaw, Chili,Cheese. Its like nothing you will ever have. The slaw is tangy and there chili is top notch. Not to mention the Vienna Beef dogs and buns, Sure to make your "trip" to the Windy City a whole lot closer and cheaper. Chilli-Cheese Fries: Again this chilli is DA BOMB! And with the freshly cut made to order fries that are so crisp. You have a great side dish with your dogs. Verdict: Go. Its Cheap, and good. What else do expect from a dive? The Wienery is most likely the best Hot Hog joint in Minnesota. So what are you waiting for? head on over to Cedar Av. (make sure you lock your doors!!) and go to the wienery. Grungy tables and chairs, but also clean and the food is delicious and very cheap. The Upsetter is great, as are the Drive-In Fries. If you like spice, I would get them with the Habanero chili instead of regular. I also had the Italian combo and the Habnero chili dog, which were both good as well. Got take out today from here. Asked for a chicago style spicy italian sausage. Got home and all i had was an italian sausage with one measely pickle. To top it off, my sausage was overcooked, burnt, and chewy. Paid $5 with a $2 tip. Could have (and should have) just bought a pack of johnsonville brats for a lot less and it would have tasted better. Not recommending this place. read more

After seeing the segment on the food channel for The Wienery and having relatives in the St. Paul area, i knew it was on my lists of places to try. to put it bluntly, this place puts the term dive into a category all it's own. my mouth was agape for the first 5 mintues of being there. it was gross and dirty. waitress's clothes were filthy. i had to make a trip to the bathroom, downstairs and was afraid a rat was going to come at me. how does this place get around any health laws, is beyond me. but, in all fairness, the dogs and fries were good. cole slaw to mayoinnasey for me, and the onion rings were very good. would I go back, no way! read more

I love this place, every time. It's cash only, so be prepared. They have a Somali-inspired burger with peppers that is incredibly good. Enough heat to counter the MN winter outside. The hand-cut fries are wonderful, slightly spiced, piping hot. Unlimited soda refills are always a nice touch. The dogs are awesome. I have yet to try a tofu dog, I'll get on that. I'm sad they aren't open later as well, but Pat has three kids under 10 years old, so he has to be home in the evenings by bedtime. I think that's a great reason for an early closing time. I returned today with my boyfriend and I decided to try their west bank burger. My thoughts?........amazing. The burger was very cheap and yet the quality was very high. I split my boyfriend's minneapolis style bratwurst and my only gripe with it was that I wouldn't use a bratwurst for it (you choose your own hot dog/sausage so it is easily avoided) and would pick either a hot dog or polish sausage. I will certainly come back. Even though their hot dogs may disappoint, their burgers and fries don't disappoint in any way (I actually want to make a trip here to try their italian beef sanwdwich). And even better, this place is obscenely cheap. My bf thought it was going to be more expensive than our normal hangout, the hard times cafe, and yet when he looked at the menu, he o.oed when he realised that it was way cheaper than he thought it would be. For each of us, it came to 6 bucks. I got just a burger and a soda, my bf just got fries and a bratwurst and decided to go with a water. Come here and enjoy this hole in the wall! read more

A Step Below "Dive"---Prices are fair to cheap; owner/chef works hard but the place is just awfully sleazy. Took out 2 Chicago dogs , one with bacon. Bacon not well cooked and dogs are smallish. My girlfriend and I saw this place on an episode of "Diners, Drive-ins and dives" and we decided to check it out. The food does not disappoint. The Chicago hot dog was undoubtedly among the best I have ever had (perhaps better than the dogs at the Wiener's Circle in Chi-town). We also loved the "drive in fries" which are covered in coleslaw. I have been back a few times now since my first visit and also have to recommend the Selamu burger, which has hot peppers cooked inside the patty. Overall, absolutely worth the trip into Cedar Riverside. read more

OK, since it was featured by Guy F. on DDD, we had to try it. Food was good enough, fries hot and greasy - tasty. The waitress was really friendly and nice. Service a little slow considering there were only 3 other customers there at the time. Prices are cheap. Don't know that I care for the REALLY beat up furnishings, no AC on a 90+ day, spider eggs in the corner of the front window, or the filthy mirror above the counter; but, Hey, Guy said it was a dive! I found this place searching on Reddit for date night ides, ironic, as this place is one of the smallest, diviest places I've ever been to. But you just can't beat the price and the taste of their food. We researched the menu and recommendations from other yelpers. We got the Minneapolis dog, the picnic dog, and the drive in fries. We almost got a 3rd dog to share but I'm glad we didn't as this was plenty of food. The Minneapolis dog was amazing. I love Chicago dogs but adding the coleslaw took it to another level. The picnic dog was pretty good as well. The drive in fries though stole the show. I normally HATE chili cheese fries, mainly because they just leave me feeling heavy and gross. However the chili that they used was pretty mild and paired with the cheese and coleslaw it was amazing! Our bill came to about $12. What a cheap date. We left an extra large tip for them and both left promising ourselves that we would return for more. Whatever they are doing, it's working well for them. I almost considered giving 4 stars just because of the dive atmosphere but who am I kidding? I don't even care! read more

My main complaint is that the service is pretty sub-standard but the food is so good I usually try to tip a decent amount. The hot dogs are very good, it's not that the hot dogs themselves are really so tasty, but the toppings are very, very good. I really like the Drive in Dog and order that every time, it's divine, the coleslaw and the chili and the cheese go together so well and they're piled on top of each other prolifically. The place is also very dirty, so if you're easily grossed out by unsanitary places this might be a no go. This place is worse than a lot of restaurants in third world countries, I'm not saying you'll get sick from going there but yeah, it's a total dive. If you just concentrate on how good the hot dogs are when you order them with more toppings then you'll love this place. I would avoid the burgers as they just are not that juicy and they make you pay for all the add ons. Also, I was not thrilled that the person molding the ground beef did it without gloves on, I don't know if that is standard practice but it would have been nice if he put something on his hands before touching the meat. So yeah, I go to this place when I'm nearby and craving hot dogs. It's great. It is probably the best overall hot dog place in the city but there are other places that serve good hot dogs too like "The Bulldog" which are much more clean although very crowded and loud. I can't believe that this place was on food network! The food was good but not great and could not make up for the horrible service and filthiness. I was expecting a "dive" so I didn't have high expectations but this was so dirty and cluttered and I can't believe health inspection hasn't shut it down. All they have to do is get a little soap and water and give everything a little wash and the atmosphere would be great. There was only one person working there and he was using f***k for every other word right in front of my young daughter just because more customers were coming in. I don't want to eat anywhere they treat their customers like that and curse at them just for wanting a hotdog and give them business. read more

My girlfriend an I split a hot dog, burger, and fries when we visited the Wienery last month. The food was...fine. You get what you pay for, which is not a bad thing by any means! I have never left a review before on Yelp but one aspect of our Wienery experience stood out and warranted a review: the restaurant is dirty and rather gross. I understand and respect places that are "dives," but this restaurant is below that designation. The floors, counter, and walls were visibly dirty. The open kitchen looked run down, unorganized, and bluntly gross. I wasn't physically standing in the kitchen, so if it was not actually dirty, I apologize. However, it was visibly filthy. The one worker was nice enough and the food was slightly below average. The burger we ordered was stuffed with cheese and garlic but there was literally just a raw clove of garlic stuffed in the patty. Again, the food is not even remotely the issue here. If the restaurant kept the same menu but cleaned up the space, I would return for lunch again. read more

Hey now! I have been reading the reviews for The Wienery and am not surprised by the good and the bad. The Wienery is what it is and you go there for one reason and one reason only. THE FOOD! Depending on the time of day and the size of the crowd you are not gonna get the best service in the world. Get over it. You don't go there to have someone hovering over you and pinching your kids cheeks and hustlin' you for a tip. If you want that go to Applebee's or The Olive Garden. I do know that if your style of food is Chicago style dogs, chili, homemade fries and just all around great greasy spoon food you will not be dissappointed. Pat, the guy that owns and runs the place is a one man show. I personally feel the place should be renamed Pat's West Bank because that is what it is about. Pat's masterful and artful passion for his food and the West Bank that he serves. Breakfast is awesome, dogs are the best, fries could not get better. We found this place on the Diners, Drive Ins and Dives website and decided to give it a try. It truly is a Dive, and I can appreciate a good dive. Ok, so it's dirty and messy, I can roll with that. (I especially enjoyed the collection of prison ID bracelets.) But it was also FREEZING in there! We stayed in our coats and hats for the entire meal. Maybe on a below zero day in January, crank up the heat a bit so your guests are comfortable? Not a very welcoming environment. The staff, was neither rude nor welcoming. We don't need a parade when we walk in the door, but some amount of friendly banter would be nice. We were one of the few guests in there but it felt a bit like we were interrupting some friends hanging out instead of bringing business in the door. The food was ok. My dog was actually pretty good and the onion rings were great, but we ordered cheese fries and when they came out plain, we inquired about the cheese. When the plate came back, they had just thrown some shredded cheese on top and didn't bother to melt it or anything. Again, just not going that extra mile. Once was enough, we won't be back. read more
