No babies allowed. My husband, our silent baby in his body carrier strapped to my husband (which he always sleeps in) and myself wanted to taste here. As we tried to come upstairs, they stopped us and said children under 21 were not allowed. I understand, but our 2 month old newborn strapped to my husband wasn't going to bother anyone, let alone drink illegally. When I got up there, my first pour was generous, but the dog (not hygienic) and the lady on speakerphone next to me seems more disruptive than a silent baby. Management-I get the law, but this is something where you recognize the spirit and not the letter. The only reason I can see you choosing to lose the money we would have spent is if an officer had already cited you for a similar infraction for an infant in your premises. read more

I have been part of the wine club here for several years now and I have yet to be disappointed. They have a great selection ranging from bang for your buck all the way up to the fancy stuff and the staff will gladly help you find something new to try. Great local business. read more

Went for the second time to the upstairs wine bar. Drove out from Brentwood. We are not regulars, though we used to be when we lived in Dublin. The staff is extremely friendly and informative, if you take the time to talk with them. Did a tasting of 5 wines for $22. It was an outstanding pairing and if you get the cheese plate, you can't beat it. Two of the wines they tasted sold out, which, to me, tells you they are pouring some pretty good wines. Each time we have gone, our party has bought several bottles of the wines we tasted. Highly recommend. Only problem tonight was the recommendation for a restaurant. Restaurant wasn't great, will be doing a review on that as well, but what was awesome and really puts the 5 in this 5 star review was the fact that when we discussed restaurants with our server, he offered to secure us reservations so we didn't have to worry about. Upon entrance, the laughter coming from their upstairs wine bar told me that I am in the right place. I love being rambunctious! But wow, while Sophia C and I worked our way upstairs, I could not stop being distracted by all the bottles of wine they have in this little wine shop! THERE'S WINE EVERYWHERE!!!! (And cheese!!!) We tried the red flight, which gave us two-ounce samples of red wine from five different wineries for $20. Needless to say, I had to finish Sophia C's last two glasses. She was done by the sixth ounce. The decor is simple, the patrons and staff members are friendly. I wish they could be a little more informative about what types of wine we were tasting, but it could be partly our fault that we didn't inquire about them. Oh well, why ask when you can drink? Great place to hang out and drink some great wine with friends, depending on who your server is, service is either 5 star or bleh, but its easy to overlook that portion with some good friends and good conversation. One of my vendors surprised me with a terrific marketing opportunity with just two days notice. They suggested that we have a wine & cheese tasting event at our store, featuring a celebrity guest.. Of course I said, "Sure, that sounds great"! I knew that I could easily put together promotional materials that would attract customers, but when it came to the event itself, I didn't have a clue. I didn't want to sound too unsophisticated, so I didn't let on that I knew nothing about cheese(other than American & Cheddar), let alone wine. My plan was get a list, which I did from my daughter, who is much more sophisticated than I, and make a trip to BevMo. List in hand, I rushed off to BevoMo with not a clue of what I was doing. On my way I got stuck in traffic on Main Street. At a dead stop, I glanced across the street to see "The Wine Steward Shop". Short on time, I quickly made a u-turn, and found parking right in front of the store. Upon entering, I was promptly greeted and I explained my predicament. In less than 20 minutes, I was out the door with a couple cases of "White", and a couple cases of "Red" as well as advice to help me meet my customers expectations. I don't drink alcohol, so I have little personal use for the things I buy here. That said, if you know nothing about wine, because for example you don't drink, this is a good place for gift shopping since they're friendly and avoid mocking your shameful ignorance of that which every other northern California resident seems to know from birth. I have to agree with Rick D about this place - I had the same experience. My friend and I stopped by the Wine Steward last night. It wasn't very crowded - there were a few people at the bar and at one other table. My friend and I asked to share the flight of 5 wines. The server seemed somewhat annoyed by this and poured the first wine without telling us what it was. We drank it and waited. And waited. Finally the server came over to pour the second wine. We asked what wine it was, and she just directed us toward the menu. Again, we drank it and there was a very long delay before the third wine was poured. And so on for the other wines. I was almost ready to leave after the 4th wine, since I thought the 5th might never come. All in all, they seemed annoyed having us there - it was very haughty service. (The only saving grace was the nice woman downstairs, who was very pleasant to us. She was the reason we went up to the bar in the first place.) read more

This review is concerning the tasting area. Like everything else on Main Street this was an overpriced experience for the value. More importantly, it was a bizarre experience. First, our servor had no clue as to anything concerning wine, cheese or meats. If that was not strange enough, the other servor had an incredibly indifferent attitude with a totally flat affect. I would buy a bottle of wine here - they have a great selection - but I would not have a drink here again. As others have said, there is one server in particular who is terrible. He pours each wine in your flight separately (one at a time) and never tells you what he's pouring. He spilled wine on my friend's bag and then charged her for the bottle of sparkling water that another (nicer) server got for her to use to clean it. He's unfriendly and just makes you feel like he doesn't want you there - basically, he provides the opposite of good service. Since so many other reviewers have said the same thing, it must not have just been an off night. So I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Wine Steward is a great place to hang out on a Friday night. Their tasting loft is open Thursday-Saturday and features a select tasting of different wines that changes weekly. You can also order a few different wines by the glass. The wine is always great. The ambiance is comfortable and classy. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly too! They have great cheese plates with fabulous crackers and apple slices. They also have a few sausage plates and I think a dessert or two. read more

Great selection and great prices. But when checking out their reserve Wines in their humidified room, I noticed no air-conditioning. Over 78 degrees in the storage area. Most likely their wines are cooked and will spoil early due to improper storage. Staff didn't seem to think it mattered. Now I know why they have lower prices. They're a quaffing Shop. Not a place to get reputable Wines. Hopefully they learn to respect their product. read more

i found this place by accident when Claude & Dominique's Bistro referred me to this place as i was begging for them to sell me a bottle ;) walking into a wine store in Pleasanton, one could expect walking into a place where pretentiousness was the norm. i'm happy to say that you don't experience that here whatsoever. they have the most helpful staff i've ever come across when shopping for wine. they actually take the time to go through your options as they listen to what you're looking for. they have a wine club that you can join, but i recommend that you try going there during a wine bar lounge event. it goes down Thursday - Saturday during the early evening and there's usually a theme for the week. if you want to try a really good bottle of wine, my favorite is a red Bordeaux from Chateau Haut-Brion. IIRC it's an 88 vintage and i can say without a doubt that it's one of my top 5 bottles. read more

A wonderful asset to the Pleasanton community. We are members of the wine club that is only $20 a month and gives us two bottles of red. They are always excellent and we get 15% off on all purchases. While some people seem to think that the Wine Steward is expensive, that is really not true. They always have a large range of great offers. And if you want that special wine or champagne, you have the experts right there. Very friendly and no wine-snobbery has been expressed towards us. read more

NOTE: 5 STARS for the actual store area that sells amazing wine, great selection, helpful clerks. I am reviewing the "wine bar" upstairs. Disappointed, and slightly confused. Went in for the first time this month for a much needed date night with my husband and instantly realized I was going to be less than thrilled as a customer. No friendly greeting, which is a bad sign for a wine bar. The menu was comical, and not in a good way, it was riddled with spelling and grammar errors. My husband and I had to laugh when we saw simple mathematical errors (the flights did not add up to the individual pours?! So it was cheaper to pay for each pour within a flight individually. Makes absolutely no sense). We pointed this out and were told, "Yeah there are some weird prices." In the corner a TV was scrolling through random photos off someone's personal camera, or so it seemed, very odd. The wine was delicious, however the server did not engage in any form of conversation or discussion about the wine, no recommendations or asking our taste preferences. This is somewhat the point of going to a wine bar, it is not? You are actually interested in trying wines, but to be honest most of the people in the room that evening were more interested in getting wasted, so we simply weren't the clientele they were catering to I guess. We enjoyed the cheese platter and our tasting, however were eager to leave as the ambiance was simply not there. It seems as if you are a "regular" or a wine club member you are welcomed and therefore enjoy the experience. Maybe they have enough regulars not to need new clients, I'm not sure. But as first time customers we were basically ignored. I feel as though this venue has the potential to be something special, especially given the location and the Pleasanton population, however they don't seem to be putting in much effort to make it a truly enjoyable experience for their customers. read more

I have to admit, I've walked by the Wine Steward a thousand times and have never stepped foot in there. Which is odd because I do like wine. But I bought a voucher on LocalGruv for wine tasting for 2 and $10 towards any bottle of wine. So, needless to say, my husband and I took advantage of this and had a great time at the Wine Steward. The staff was friendly, they answered our questions about the various flight options, and the pours were generous. I can see this place being our new meeting spot for pre-dinner drinks with friends. Plus, we left with a couple bottles of wine in hand....one we drank that night and one we're saving for Thanksgiving. Though the wine bar was busy and there seemed to be some regulars there, we felt well taken care of. I didn't have any lengthy converesations with the guy behind the bar (owner?), however I heard him talk at length with some of the other patrons and if I ever needed a bottle for a special ocassion I would go straight to him for recommendations.
