I'm not so sure how this place is still in business or how it gets these raving reviews, unless it's just locals that want to create business. We had to wait 10 minutes for service although the place was pretty empty, but then were really pushed to order something, as the waitress came back every minute to ask if we had found something. The food was mediocre at best. The coleslaw was bland and had no flavor. The fries were the best among the fish and chips. The fish wasn't blackened but the breading was. The hummus was the standard grocery store brand flavor. All in all a place I wouldn't visit again if the food was free. read more

A terrific brewpub in downtown Bar Harbor, with a great tap list and good food. We ducked in for lunch on a recent rainy afternoon, and enjoyed spicy chicken tenders, crisp salads, hot Clam Chowder and a tasty Fried Haddock sandwich, along with some delicious local beer. Service was excellent during our visit, and the laid-back, family friendly setting perfect for both parents and kids. Space in the restaurant is tight, so arrive early and plan for a wait during the busy season. My only complaint is that the bar is also part of the waitlist, so you can't enjoy a drink while you wait for your table. But Thirsty Whale is still a solid spot for grub and brews. read more

Nice place for a quick bite to eat and some drinks! Walking in, the restaurant feels very cozy with wooden floors and walls. Right next to the door, they have a huge chalkboard detailing happy hour times and deals! The waiter was super nice and patient while we decided on our meal. I got a clam chowder to start with in a small cup. It was thick, creamy and perfect for a cold day. Both of my friends tried the Lobster roll combo with a cup of clam chowder. The lobster was warm and soft, but the bun was cold. I had a sandwich with a side salad, which was good, but nothing really special. This place has a pretty good veggie burger and fresh, hot fries. Something about the patty reminds me of a high quality, flavorful version of the BK veggie. They also don't skimp on the toppings for the Whale Salad - lots of feta, peppers and olives. My dining companion said the lobster roll was perrrrrfect and the best he's ever had. Good beer list with a lot of local options. The wait wasn't too bad right around dinnertime on a Saturday night because they have a ton of seating. Ambiance is very casual and lots of families dine here even though they have a full bar. First we order a Downeast Cider, pressed from local Maine apples and a Black Bear Demon Stout, both were quick to be our new local favorites. Then comes the cup of chowder, my second best since arriving in New England this vacation. Next they bring David's fried clams and my fish wrap. Wow! This is my first 5 star of this whole trip! Stopped in while here on a cruise last week and loved it! Sat at the bar and the bar tender was awesome. Very attentive and knowledgeable! I had a small whale salad which was huge and included feta and roasted red peppers and a bowl of clam chowder. I also had a local beer Allagash White. Which was delicious and light and I wish I could get it at home! My spouse had the lobster roll and a cup of lobster bisque. My clam chowder was probably one of the best I've ever had!! I almost (and wish!) I ordered a second bowl it was that good!! The lobster roll wasn't as big as some others we had order but it was by far the freshest and best lobster we had through out our New England and Canada trip!! Solid place for lunch. Not too touristy or crowded imho, just good food, friendly service, and a relaxed pub atmosphere. I ordered the lobster roll with the clam chowder. Lobster roll had chunks of lobster in it and was not overly drenched in mayo, a very solid choice. The clam chowder was delicious - very flavorful, had clams in it and not too much potato. Also tried the Lobster bisque - it had a nice sweetness to it, like maybe it had some corn in the soup, really good. Also tried the Blueberry Soda - a bit sweet, but still very delicious. This was our family's second trip to Bar Harbor/Acadia, and we love it here. We had not had a single bad experience until we came across this place. Approximately quarter past 8 PM, we asked the hostess for a table for 5 (full disclosure: asian family with three children ages 11 to 15). Even though the hostess just sat a couple to a table just in front of us, she told us they are done for the night and not taking any more customers for the night. We thought that was a bit strange since they were not to close till 9:30 PM. But whatever. We decided to order some pizza down the street at Rosalie's and to kill time while we wait, we walked to MDI ice cream shop and got some ice cream for the kids (not the best to spoil their appetite before dinner, but heck we are on vacation). While we were walking back (about 8:45 now), we noticed that the same hostess who told us they are done for the night taking/seating new customers. Hmmmm. I walked in to the restaurant to speak to the hostess and to ask for an explanation. The hostess told me that a table had opened up and they took new customers. Eh? I said to her that does not make sense to me and that the situation made us feel discriminated. No reply from her. Just a stare back. At this point, as I took out my phone to snap a picture of the place to post a review, and she reached over to grab my phone (the phone snapped a photo just as she is grabbing my phone). She pushed me out of the restaurant and slammed the door closed. Wow. I snapped another photo of the place through the front glass. We proceeded to Rosalie's to wait for our pizza. Lo and behold, two police officers showed up to the restaurant and were speaking to the hostess in front of the restaurant pointing at us. After a few minutes, the officers approached us to get our story. We told them just as above. The officers were mostly cordial. They did tell us that the hostess, who happens to be the owner, grabbing my phone is considered an act of assault. We were certainly not going to press any charges at this point, and we went our way. But more we thought about this incident, more uncomfortable it made us feel. Whether the hostess/owner was discriminatory to us based on our race, group size, or was just having a bad day/life, this incident had certainly added a bad rotten taste to otherwise very enjoyable Bar Harbor/Acadia experience. Also, what was the point of calling the police? It is only reminiscent of all the "karen" videos of late threatening to call the police to report that they are being threatened by the "other" people. Unbelievable. Please read other negative reviews of this restaurant on Yelp and Google, and you will see many negative reviews, especially regarding the rudeness of the hostess/owner, whose name is reportedly Heather. Cannot possibly recommend this place to others. Customers beware!!! P.S.: The hostess/owner will deny, deny, and deny, true to form of a guilty person. Hostess and staff might be the least accommodating group in all of Bar Harbor. Walked to the restaurant to put our name into the waitlist at 5:10pm. Told at least an hour of wait time. Went back to shower and change. Exit the shower to see that they called after 26 minutes (5:36pm). Call them immediately back after I exit the shower and see a missed call to say we are still wanting to eat there and would walk there immediately and wait for the next available. Was told we were skipped over and would be re-added to the back of the list and that we "were part of the problem" by not answering our phone. read more

Food was just fine. For a take-out order, a 15% gratuity was automatically added to my bill - this was not communicated at all. Only noticed by looking at the receipt, where this is a request for additional gratuity that may deceive one into not noticing the pre-added gratuity. Looking through recent Yelp reviews, I can see the owner responds to many reviews. On the gratuity issue, they have responded saying that Bar Harbor is busy, decreased capacity due to COVID-19, takeout orders are difficult on their kitchen, and other Bar Harbor restaurants add a larger gratuity. I have not experienced a single automatic gratuity on takeout orders other than this establishment, and here at the end of October, Bar Harbor is a ghost town. Regardless, the issue is not the gratuity itself - I always tip on takeout, and it is your prerogative to add a required gratuity on takeout if you choose. The issue is not communicating this at all - I was not told on the phone, the website does not mention it, I was not told when I arrived to pay. If you are going to add an automatic gratuity to a bill, you should inform customers ahead of time to allow them to choose whether or not they'd like to continue ordering from your establishment with that condition. Very shady, not the norm in Bar Harbor, and the owner seems to respond to every critical Yelp review blaming the reviewer. There's a LOT of places in Bar Harbor - I've been to 3 this past week serving the same fare as this place with better food and without the weird gratuity and angry Yelp owner. The owner/host is very disrespectful. My boyfriend and I have a service dog due to his disability. The host asked rude and personal questions when questioning our dog. She claimed they did not allow service animals. We showed proof and even asked to eat outdoors and she still refused. She got very snippy and kicked us out of the restaurant. We had a terrible experience trying to eat at this restaurant. I would not recommend going here to eat, especially if you have a disability. Never tried the food. Couldn't get past the nasty hostess who ORDERED me to pull my mask all the way up my nose (I already was) and then barked at me to 'get back ! ' as I approached the hostess desk. This after she is literally brushing customers with no masks elbows as she walks from the back. It's a Yankee nightmare and Red Sox wet dream by memorabilia, but put aside the sinister rivalry that has infected this North Maine Bar Harbor pub you have quaint local pub with friendly peeps and some decent eats. Heavy on the lobster and seafood but light on the juicy burgers and super sides. The floured wings are deep fried and spicy but do fall short of succulent and flavorful. The saving grace was the added substitute of sweet potato fries for an extra $1.50 accompanying a good burger. Slightly dry but hearty and warms you up on a cold autumn day. The surprise of Bar Harbor is the saturation of wild blueberry everything. Here the Urban Farm Blueberry Cidah added a pleasant flavor to the burger and now I am slightly buzzed. The bar is bustling and the line to get in is an average 15 minute wait but all in all this is a nice place to visit and eat despite the nasty memorabilia. read more

I visited the Thirsty Whale last week on my second trip to Bar Harbor. As you all know, I rate on food quality, for certain, and service as a VERY close second. I went to the Whale on recommendation of a local resident, and was very pleased, indeed. I ordered my very first lobster roll. It was really very tasty - much better than I was expecting, as I'm not really a fan of lobster. (I've been served far too much nasty, rubbery, frozen lobster to every approach a menu option of lobster with glee...) Now I understand what a lobster roll is! My first clue - it's served on a toasted hot-dog bun! I get it! It's peasant-food... once that was corrected in my mind, I was able to really enjoy the meal. Whale's lobster roll is made with a lightly seasoned mayo concoction, which really allows the flavor of the fresh lobster to shine. Additionally, they use BARELY enough mayo to hold it all together... nothing gloppy, like a midwestern tuna salad... I chose the cole-slaw side, and it was divine... tart, creamy, and crunchy. So, that get's the Whale to 4-stars... but what really shown was the wait-staff. Originally, I came in with my husband, and we were seated at a four-top. However, he decided he wasn't hungry and went in search of wi-fi. I felt guilty and asked to move to the bar, allowing a bigger party to be seated for that waitresses section. (tips are based on sales, you know?) She was so accommodating, and along the way, I realized she would be moving me to someone else's station and losing MY tip... I felt really bad, but she and the bartender were so fine with the move... really made me, the obvi-tourist, feel at home. and, BINGO, within five minutes a table of three sat down. So, everyone was made better from the situation. In general, everyone was really friendly and happy. there was a good mix of locals and visitors, which always tells me this is a place to eat. If I had the option for zero stars, this is a place I would use for that rating. I ordered a salad, which I'm not sure how a place manages to mess up, but this one did. It appeared to be thrown together as if from a salad bar in a cafeteria. I also got salmon on top, and when it came out the salmon was cold. I asked for it to be warmed up (and I hate sending food back!) and it came out only slightly warmer. It tasted dry and plain. The salad ingredients also were not fresh. The fried clams here are phenomenal. The batter is light and crispy and clean tasting while the clams are plump and tender and full of fresh clam flavor. I opted for the Whale Salad rather than French fries or cole slaw to accompany my whole belly morsels of deep fried goodness. ---Cup of Clam Chowder $4.50--- Rich, creamy and packed with chopped clams just the way my husband likes it. This is the slightly thicker, higher in fat content type of clam chowder for those who enjoy this version. ---Grilled Chicken Sandwich $7.50 + $2 for extras--- Served with extra crispy French fries, the sizable portion of breast meat was moist and nicely seasoned. For an additional charge, my husband requested for lettuce $0.25, tomato $0.25, Swiss cheese $0.50 and a GLUTEN FREE BUN $1. The owner/host is extremely nasty, unprofessional and rude! Stay away from this place! I took a couple of days to write this review to think things over, because my experience was that appalling. It is the worst restaurant experience I've had ever I went in around 8:15-8:30 on Tuesday, to put my name down on the wait list. I had checked the restaurant to make sure it would be open, and the closing time was 9:30. She took a party in right before me and when it was my turn, she closed the menu said they weren't serving anymore. I knew it wasn't time to close yet, so I said, "you just seated two people." She rudely said they are full and those were the last customers. They are filling their orders and are done for the night. So we decided to order pizza at Rosalie's down the block, and get ice cream in the meantime. After 30 minutes, we walked by to pick up our pizza and the door is open at Thirsty Whale. I see the same host taking in new customers. I told my husband, so he goes in to see what that's about, because she told me they were closing. She immediately became defensive and claimed that a table happened to open up. She started to become irate, and belligerent with him. He took out his phone and she grabbed his phone, assaulted him and pushed him out the door telling him to get out of her restaurant. She then proceeded to call the police. We were at the pizza place waiting outside for our order when the police actually showed up. I saw them down the block, and waved at them. Very nice policeman.. we explained our situation. There was nothing to be done because the only one that should be prosecuted is that host. She's not even worth the time to do that. I'm guessing her name is Heather S. based on the other bad reviews! Final thoughts: We are an Asian American family of 5. Racism does come to mind, but she never actually said anything racist. But she doesn't know how to run a business, how to treat or talk to customers, or be respectful of people. In NY, restaurant owners bend over backwards to their customers. And WTH, she called the police on us because we are standing up for what's right. Rough experience with lunch here today. Summary: This is our first visit to Maine, a surprise bday trip for my husband. Their food got my husband sick with food poisoning. The least they could do is take responsibility and apologize for it. Details: Their sauerkraut (used on the frueben sandwich) tasted off. My husband, after having a few bites, took the rest of it off the sandwich. In hindsight, we should have just sent it back but the service was so slow we decided to make the best of the situation. Bad call, in hindsight. 4-5 hours later, as we are about to head to the park to enjoy our afternoon, my husband got serious food poisoning and has been in bed all afternoon. I called the restaurant to speak to their manager but instead was directed to a guy named Zack who suggested my husband must be sick from heat stroke (which is ridiculous since it was only 70 degrees today) and then said it can't be their food because it takes 12 hours for food poisoning to kick in (incorrect again - it takes 4-12 hours). Also the only thing we ate today was a banana with coffee in the morning and then lunch at Thirsty Whale. Rest of their food was mediocre at best. Downright hype. I don't get the insane wait times and apparently "competitive" prices. As accurately described in previous reviews, you get a "bargain" because you pay for a lower than market quantity. This although, I do not mind as much as the substandard / inattentive / rushed service. We were asked to place an order twice within moments of arriving which feels sort of pushy. When asked for fries for appetizers with a chipotle dip, it took the server at least a few minutes of strides all around the kitchen and bar to bring us a tiny cup of the dip. All of this ended with an "are you finished eating?" which again sounded so pushy. We also felt that the place doesn't have enough servers to do the job because the servers seem to always be on their toes and rushing. Just don't believe all the hype guys. Parking is usually pretty cumbersome in this area of Bar Harbor but we were already parked on this occasion having completed some shopping at area shops. We dropped into Thirsty Whale with a party of ten for an early dinner around 5pm on a Thursday. There were a few people at the bar and a couple of tables but the dinner rush had not yet begun. We were greeted warmly by the hostess. We told her not to bother shoving tables together as we were fine sitting at several tables. Service was fast and friendly throughout our visit. Drinks were refilled in a timely manner and wait times for our orders were pretty fast. My wife wasn't too hungry so she opted for just a bowl of clam chowder and garlic bread, she was very pleased with both. The chowder was nice and creamy with lots and lots of clams, clams in every bite. I sampled it and agreed it was delicious. One of our party got the lobster roll and really enjoyed it. For some reason most in our party ordered the fried haddock sandwich and everyone raved about how delicious it was. My brother commented that he thought the bun was the most delicious bun he'd ever eaten. I ordered the Fisherman's Plate and, to be honest, I was disappointed. It just wasn't what I was expecting. The menu description is "A fried assortment of haddock, scallops, shrimp and clams." I was expecting a nice piece of haddock but instead got a couple of haddock nuggets. The shrimp were teeny tiny popcorn shrimp without much flavor but the scallops and clams were on point. The accompanying french fries were crispy and delicious. I can recommend Thirsty Whale Tavern but suggest not getting the Fisherman's Plate. Service was friendly and efficient and the room was comfortable. Overall, the food was very good. read more

The Thirsty Whale is a great spot for seafood in Bar Harbor. In a such a small, touristy town you would expect high prices - especially on lobster rolls, but the prices were so reasonable here. The lobster roll combo with lobster bisque was delicious, some of the freshest lobster meat I've had, and the bisque was the perfect consistency. The one thing I wish the combo had the option to include would be fries since the regular lobster roll meal comes with fries. I also ordered the fried clams, which were delicious. The waitstaff was all very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere was your typical casual and comfortable seafood restaurant and the menu had options for everyone. Would highly recommend the Thirsty Whale to anyone visiting Bar Harbor! read more

Between the two of us - my boyfriend and I had around 20 lobster rolls between the two of us on our Maine trip. This was by far, the best roll we had our entire trip. Just a touch of mayonnaise, the bread was buttered and toasted perfectly, the price was right... the service was good. Love it and miss it... I need another read more
