Next time, I'll try the selection of breads and other desserts look damn good. Tried the highly raved about almond croissant here. I think this place is fairly dedicated to making good pastries, yet I still think the croissant is not comparable to Tartine's croissant. This is a wonderful local spot. They have delicious pastries and food. All of the pastries are reasonably priced. I pick some up for my coworkers all of the time and they are thoroughly appreciated. Noticed this place while walking back from Twin Peaks (not much need to worry about calories after walking 7 miles horizontally and 2000 feet vertically!). My SO was attracted by the courtyard, but the bread, croissant and apple gallette were what we'll remember. Croissant and french bread are my two favorite bakery items and this place got them both right. My SO complained that the croissant crust wasn't *quite* crisp enough and that it only matched up with typical bakeries in France, but it's downright impossible to do better here in the states. The french bread had good hole structure, a chewey crumb and a golden, crunchy crust. Clear Flour is my fav bakery back home (we're visiting SF for 10 days) and I'd say CF has the slightly better croissant and slightly worse baguette, but it's hard to complain about anything this good. The apple gallete was downright amazing---tender, yet crispy crust; carmelized, yet firm apple slices. Yummy! You must try one before you die! We went for breakfast today and ended up staying for lunch (sandwiches were quite good!) after learning that Thorough is a satellite of the SF Baking Institute, reading the "Advanced" book, meeting the VP as a result and chatting with a bread expert who was on staff! We'll be back tomorrow before we conclude our trip. If you were wondering (as we were) where they bake the bread, they don't do it here (no ovens for it!). They are supplied by SFBI. Get yourself one of their Almond Croissants and coffee (they use Sightglass beans!) and you'll know what I'm talking about. The BEST scone I have ever tasted, and I eat a lot of scones. The seating in this bakery is open and airy, and there are tables on a welcoming and private back patio. Maybe I have to try more of what they have to offer. What I've tried so far is good but not amazing. Their plain croissant and mushroom filled pastry is really good. I'd definitely come back here for a fresh croissant. Contrary to reviews, I didn't think the almond croissant was that great. It was pretty sweet and heavy on the almond filling. I've definitely had way better. I've also tried their turkey sandwich here as well. It was pretty dry and forgettable. I hope to come back and try more things! Highly recommend. Fast service, not cheap but fairly priced, and a rotating set of really creative baked goods. I got a butternut squash and Brie turnover which was rich but not particularly flaky, and would have been much better heated up. So first of all, I just want to set the record straight. Tartine has amazing croissants that are out of this world. The best in the City. What I said earlier was just a fit of post brunch elation. Just tryin to keep my Yelp street cred robust. However, Thorough Bread is still 5-Stars. Their baguettes are still awesome, I am still looking for better ones in the city or in CA for that matter. Some of the other stuff is amazing, it makes me feel like the luckiest guy in the whole wide world to have this a couple blocks from my joint. Stopping by just to pick up an Epi or an Olive shield thingy is my MO. Brunch here is amazing too, they have a really nice backyard outdoor seating area. Something that most other bakeries don't have. And one of the most amazing things is they never have lines here, which I still find incredible to this day. Probably the best ham croissant ever - complete with beschamel sauce. And there is a nice shady patio out back. Unfortunately service was just ok; dude who helped me needed help himself - first giving me change for $10 instead of the $20 I'd handed him and gave me an almond croissant instead of sticky bun. I had asked for my au lait in a mug but it came in paper cup. The pastries are well priced and looked amazing. We had a turkey sammich, a baguette, and the soup of the day. The soup was a bit bland but the tasty turkey sandwich made up for that. The place was clean and has a red-brick wall as well as lots of new track lighting. A very cozy feel to the place. Would def rec this place for sandwiches and bread. Today my friend surprised me by bringing me an almond croissant from this place. OMG - it was a great reminder of my days in Paris! Here are the details: Good size, like 7 inches, a large amount of almond paste and almonds on the top, no empty unfilled space. Then almond paste stuffed inside! It was divine. I had it in the afternoon, but it didn't even taste like it was made a few hours before. Still fresh, not overly buttery, but the butter did come through the bag, not in a gross way. Worth it! Am I the only one who has actually eaten the pastries from this place? Yes I think the berads are fine - I am not arguing that, but I definitely don't get the glowing references to the pastries??? I pass by this place 2+ times a day so I ahve been here a good number of times. The first time I had a pastry, I was greatly disappointed since it definitely looked much better than it tasted. The danishes were very dry and filling/topping had little flavor. The small cakes were mediocre tasting but beautiful to look at. I have given a variety of desserts here a try but have been let down every time. I figured that was not their specialty... Having only tried two pieces of bread and a latte here i can not give a totally accurate rating of all that they serve, but what i did have I really liked. The latte was tasty, and i think it was much better than the bland Church St Cafe that neighbors this store. The baguette and focaccia were perfect. The baguette was still warm on the inside, light, fluffy, delicious. The focaccia was not only very tasty but also has an amazing buoyancy on the inside. This bakery is a welcomed change from Tartine. Although Tartine is DELICIOUS, this bread at thorough bread is also delicious, but you don't feel like eat bite is a pound of butter. I LOVE this place! Just happened to discover Thorough Bread & Pastry last week, and what a find!! I've had the following so far (yes, all in the past week) and haven't been disappointed by any of them, which says a lot...almond croissant, ham and cheese croissant, choquettes, gougeres, pumpkin cream cheese muffin and the mini macaroons. I'm a sucker for almond croissants and they are absolutely delicious here. ...and for me, the almond croissant at a bakery is like the Pad Thai at a Thai restaurant...if they can't get it right, I'm very skeptical. Another favorite so far has been the pumpkin cream cheese muffin...so flavorful, light and fluffy! Had this next to a pumpkin muffin from Arizmendi (much denser and way too sweet) and there was absolutely NO comparison! I can never pass up trying a new macaroon either, especially ones so small and adorable. They were tasty, but to be honest, I couldn't pinpoint the flavor and thought they were just a tad on the sweet side...but since they're minis, I didn't seem to mind as much as usual. The back patio is also a plus...it's nice and spacious, but got a little chilly and I had to move inside after a little while. I can't wait to go back and try more, especially the sandwiches which I hear are super delicious. My only complaints are that they don't have heat lamps or wifi, but that might be the only thing keeping me from camping out there all day and gaining 20 lbs. Hopefully I'll only gain 5 instead. read more

Holy moly...want can you possibly say about this place that hasn't already been said?? It's absolutely ridiculously awesome. I was in the city visiting and a friend told us to meet him here for breakfast one morning. We drove out and was blown away at the amount of wonderful baked goods that this place has. Their coffee was excellent, atmosphere was super fabulous. My daughter was in baked-goods heaven, as were all the adults in the group!!! It's probably a good thing that we don't live in the city because I'd be a 500lb person living close to this place. The Almond Croissant was impossibly good, the Castro Cookies were fabulously fun, the quiche was sublime, the blueberry little cake was superb...I could go on and on. Really, one of my most favorite spots in the city. I know I'll be visiting there again when we go back to the city!!! read more

It saddens me to write a poor review for this bakery. I have seen the service deterioriate at this place. Employees are not as friendly as they were. I came in to get latte. Guess what? Latte was little bit cold. I was shocked - $3 for that? I could have went the next door to CHurch Cafe and got a better latte. I asked the lady to give me a better late. Few minutes later, I got the latte that is also cold. Hmm.. Turned out that this person who made the latte is a manager, and she was so rude and a nightmare. I've been coming here since 2012. Had I written a review prior to my recent visit it would have been a 4 star rating. My enthusiasm for this bakery cafe has taken a tumble.. Something is amiss. The pastries are not as good as they used to be. My latte was barely hot. My favorite has been the almond croissant and bostock (discontiuned). The almond croissant was so good I used to buy a few to put in my freezer. I'm glad I only bought one this time. I was sorely disappointed. It was not very flaky and the filling was a bit scant. The sticky bun was not worth the calories. Just not the quality that used to draw me here. Not sure I'll be back. Thorough Bread & Pastry was great! So I was craving pastries last week but didn't want to stand in that crazy line at Tartine so instead, I finally decided to try Thorough Bread & Pastry. I was SO happy to see that there was only 2-3 people ahead of me in line! My biggest complaint was that I felt rushed in ordering and felt like I couldn't really look at the selection. I ended up getting a Blueberry scone, eclair, and almond croissant. First of all, the prices were so reasonable and I walked out of there for under 8 bucks which I consider a steal for how delicious the pastries were. The almond croissant was great! Although, it was a little bit too rich for me and I couldn't get through the whole thing. Halfway through, the almond flavor became too pungent and sweet. But it's great for sharing and is definitely worth trying. I don't like scones much but my boyfriend does and we both loved this one! He couldn't stop raving about it calling it the best scone he has ever had. It's not dry like those terrible Starbucks scones. It was moist and each bite basically had crumbs that trailed off because of how soft it was. The eclair was good, too. It was no Tartine though- haha. This is a great alternative to Tartine if you're looking for a pastry and don't want to wait. They have a lot of seating too and it doesn't feel overwhelming when you walk in.
