This review is for the new location in Bee Cave. It's not on Yelp yet. My wife ordered a sandwhich over the phone and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. She was in a hurry because she had a dog in the car. When she arrived the guy that took her order (Eric) was startled and had not yet started the sandwich. He began making it without gloves. My wife told him "Put Gloves On!" The veggies he was using were old and wilted. When she checked out Eric returned her credit card with lettuce and mustard on it - NICE! There is no sub shop that stands up to Thundercloud. I can't walk away from the NY Italian on wheat. It is excellent. The veggies are always fresh, bread is good, and it's a true Austin original. read more

In terms of food quality this place is not much different than any of the other Thunderclouds around Austin. All very good sandwiches and at a great price. My main issue with this location is the sanitation. The bathrooms are pretty gross and they don't even have soap in one of them. The other bathroom in the store does have soap, but the dispenser has an open top and I looked in and there's old napkins, hair, dirt and other gross stuff in the dispenser. GROSS! It also seems like they just add water to old soap to try and make more of it. Really, really disgusting. I've also seen them do this with soap bottles too. In addition, I've had multiple sandwich makers sneeze while making my sandwich and just wipe their shirt over their nose. And Of course, they DIDN'T wash their hands afterwards either. I'm glad they finally required them to wear gloves. They used to not and it was pretty gnarly. Other than that, good sandwiches. Good location. read more

How much can you not care about your customers and community when they are trying to support your business during COVID?? Do you not have ANY sense handing people a pen to sign receipts that have been touched by 100's of other customers?? At least provide a hand sanitizer available...or better yet use your brains and provide a stack of clean pens so customers can use those and then put them in a container of used pens afterwards. read more

I am shocked by the low rating of this place!! I have been coming here since I was in middle school up the road over a decade ago. Now, when I come home to visit this Thundercloud is always among my first stops in Austin. The sandwiches are extremely fresh (the bread and the fillings) and the place is very clean. Personally, I love that the guys that made my sandwiches when I was in middle school are still working there (the bald guy with the glasses & Mitch!). It is by far the best sub shop.. do not even think about comparing to the national chains. The tuna is amazing but really all sandwiches are awesome! read more

I've been a thundercloud regular for years now, some might even call me a bit of a thundercloud old head . I'm just kidding, but on a serious note thundercloud for years has been my favorite sub and I am proud to say it remains at the top. Though my service wasn't nearly at the level it's been in prior years, the amazing overall sandwich and overall atmosphere truly brings me back to the old Austin perky style. Back to the service, I think this is the only thing that kept me from five stars, a woman working here was quite the female gendered dog if you get my drift. Still I can't complain, shaky service or not, Thundercloud has always beaten out local competition and always will. The ultimate sandwich in my valid eatery opinion. This restaurant really just checks off all the boxes for becoming an absolute remarkable restaurant. The wheat bread adds so much flavor that it makes it hard to imagine getting generic white bread. Let me start by saying, I LOVE Thundercloud Subs and moved from Austin a couple years ago, so whenever I'm in town I make sure I indulge at least once. Plus a previous experience at this specific location (along with ALL of my other experiences) was great. Unfortunately, my meal this evening was not quite up to par. I asked for a large American Classic on wheat bread. When asked about lettuce/tomato/onion I requested all of the above. Fast forward to the end, I wanted a chocolate chip cookie... she told me that the brownies were better, but I stuck with my choice. Then she realized there weren't even any brownies left. I pay, and I leave. At this point, I am ecstatic about my meal but when I get home it's on white bread and there's no onions (which I'm really upset about because the wheat bread and onions are my favorite parts of the sandwich)! A friend of mine who also got a sub and cookie received her cookie in a brown paper towel used for drying your hands while I received mine in the correct wax paper (but her sandwich was made perfectly). Overall, I'm just disappointed with the inconsistency of this interaction. I was so looking forward to my perfect Thundercloud Sub and was met with heartbreak. My Co-worker shared with me an email with a Thundercloud "Buy one, get one free" coupon today. The coupon 5/31/2018. My two Caucasian Co-workers took theirs to the Thundercloud at Bee Caves & 71 and they accepted the coupon, no questions asked. I took mine to this Thundercloud in Westlake and the manager said I would need the original copy mailed to me. I explained that this was printed from an email. He said he would need to see the original email. This did not sound reasonable and I began to feel offended because my white co-workers did not experience this scrutiny and as a black customer I was being asked to verify the authenticity of their own advertisement. Nowhere on the coupon did it state that it had to be an original copy of the coupon. Poor management...And false advertising....If you're black. read more

Fastest Thundercloud I've ever been to! I'm not even exaggerating when I say I walked in out with my sub within 3 minutes.

A basic sub - nothing special. If you want a sub that probably hasn't changed from the 1970's, this place is for you. There was nothing wrong with the sub but everything about the experience was uninspired. The restaurant counter has a rather bizarre layout...as a result there are multiple signs showing where to order. Two drink coolers at opposite sides of the restaurant from each other. Poorly designed menu board. This place needs a major refresh and it wouldn't take much. I would guarantee that their revenues would get an instant boost. Would I come back for a sub? Delicious and easy place to go grab a light lunch. Warning... During the week around 12-2 there can be a line out the door! I come here pretty often and the staff is very friendly. My go to subs are the California Club and Texas tuna. I find they are the most flavorful. I also love adding some extra thunder sauce! Yum! I wouldn't recommend spending your money here if you like your subs very plain. You will not be impressed if you ask for bread, turkey, and mayo. Duh! I generally LOVE Thudercloud Subs. I usually visit the one on Lake Austin Blvd., however, on this day I was in the Westlake area and thought that they must all be the same. I always get an egg salad sandwich. I bought my sandwich and eagerly took a bite, only to feel/hear a loud crunch in my mouth. That's right- there were shells in my sandwich. Yuck! I thought maybe it was just one small piece that had made it into my sandwich, so I took another bite, only to find more shells. Gross! I won't be able to eat egg salad sandwiches for awhile because of this experience. I would not order one from this location. read more

I have always loved Thundercloud. For me, the sandwiches are the perfect balance of bread and filling. My standard is just a regular turkey - but if I am feeling like I need an emotional lift - I get the california club. And I don't usually eat red meat (is a pig red meat?) But that bacon on the club is oh, so yummy and then mixed with avocado - just heavenly. But if I am feeling a need for lighter fare, I get the tuna salad-salad. It is totally satisfying. It isn't too fancy - good lettuce - a few tomatoes and a couple of scoops of the tuna salad. If you mix the tuna up with the lettuce, you can have tuna salad in every bite. This location has recently expanded - it is huge. Even though you see a long line when you get to the door - it moves very fast. These guys (and gals) know what they are doing. Sometimes I order from a block or two away as I approach - yes, I keep T-cloud in my address book. Then you can pick it up at the to go window. There is a guy dedicated to phone orders. I take it to go - as that would be bad form to do a phone order and then sit to eat! read more

Thundercloud perfects theirs with the best bread, cheese, and a delicious Thundersause (a little mystery never hurt anyone!). Pretty good, if you can get over the apparent hygiene issues. The sandwiches aren't bad, but at this particular location, you get to have your sandwich prepared by a person wearing no gloves, but that also handles cash and touches the register all without washing his hands in between. I liked to go here because it is a convenient spot for lunch, but I won't be back until they decide to pick up the hand washing, start using gloves, or have someone whose only job is to handle the register. read more

Literally always the slowest thundercloud ever. I come here often and always end up waiting 30 mins. Never a sense of decent customer service. This most recent time, by accident, I assumed the guy behind the counter was taking orders as he literally just took the guys order in front of me. The guy was extremely rude, he asked if I wanted extra veggies. I assumed he meant add ons, I said no then he started to cut the sandwich I said "oh I'm sorry, I did want lettuce tomato and onion". He then became extremely over enraged talking about how he had already asked me that. Then he didn't add everything to the sandwich after I asked, overcharged me for my food, ignored me after I asked about the total, didn't bag my food, I asked if he could bag it and he said hold on and went to go help customers that didn't need help, then came back and threw the bag at my food on the counter. All of this for accidentally stepping up to the counter because it seemed like he was ready to take an order. read more

Not bad for a first timer! Wasn't sure what to expect... But (Cali or Kali) was such an awesome help she helped me decide on what to get and recommended what to put. It was very busy!!! I usually go to Jimmie Johns, but come here more often. I get more consistently friendly service and quality food. When I walk into Jimmy Johns, the dude at the register asks me all the same questions likes he's never seen me before. If I don't ask for a drink, don't ask me if I want one when I say that's all. Thunderclouds interacts with different people each time. Jimmy Johns the bread is sometimes hard and stale, and I stopped ordering roast beef because the grissle is nasty. I just ate the most lean roast beef here at Thundercloud and I can tell it is fresh. Hands down the best of the two read more

This is the worst thundercloud I have been to. Sucks that I live so close because I go often and they are super cheap in terms of their portions. They will spread your egg salad super thin, and make sure when you ask for a condiment that it is as thin as fishing line. You have to ask for extra everything to get a normal sub. I've been to this location several times. I usually just stick with the egg salad sandwich. It's pretty tasty. The broccoli cheddar soup is awesome but they don't always have it on the menu. I typically get pretty good service. I dropped a star cause those caps can't keep all the hair away from the food! Not a single person working to prepare the salads and sandwiches was wearing gloves. Not one. They handled my food with their bare hands, then handled my cash with their hands, and went right back to preparing food. That has to be a health code violation. the first 50 times I ate at this Thundercloud, I didnt write a review. I love the sandwiches, location, and I like to support local business... so I have held my tongue (and thumbs)....but the rude treatment I received there today finally put me over the edge... I find this to be consistent there... its like the manager/owner of this location deliberately seeks out the most rude/apathetic help possible... are there exceptions? Yes, there are. Some of the employees are very nice. But most are not. I work hard for my money too, and I am tired of handing it over to someone treating me with such disrespect. The tattoos and body piercings, boxer shorts haning out the back of their pants, etc. dont bother me. I am 40 yrs old, and a very Austin casual live/let live type. Not an 80yr old conservative retiree. But all of the "hip" dress and ambviance doesnt need to equal bad customer service. Tired of giving my money to this location. Will walk across the street to Jason's Deli, or down street to Subway, not because they make better sandwiches, but because I dont get treat like a piece of --- in those restaurants. See here is the thing - you can only survive on location and volume for so long. I am a business owner myself. EDIT ***I wanted to edit my review. Although the situation still stands, after receiving a phone call from this location's owner, I did not want to leave them with 2 stars because of just 2 employees. I feel like my complaint was taken seriously and their employees will be properly reprimanded. Thundercloud has always deserved 5 stars, I just wanted to make sure to reach the appropriate people.*** My family and I dined this evening and while our food was great and our service fine initially, we left VERY unhappy. About halfway through our meal, the only 2 employees on site, told us if we needed anything, they'd be right outside. While my husband and I were confused, we thought it was fine and assumed they were attending to some sort of business. Turns out they were going out there to lounge and have a SMOKE BREAK! Not only was this front and center of their OPEN door, but probably 2 steps from the sign stating the law that smokers should be no less than 15 feet from the door. My husband and I were shocked and appalled. Not only for the disregard of the law, but as employees of the establishment that they thought this was okay...especially being the ONLY employees in the establishment. Once another customer came in, one of the women came in to take their order and washed her hands for literally 5 seconds. As we were leaving, my husband let them know how upset we were and informed them of how unprofessional their smoke break was and pointed out their blatant disregard of the law. Instead of apologizing to him, one of them rudely says, "you're welcome for the service you received tonight." He then made sure to let them know we'd be making a phone call to corporate first thing in the morning. My husband quickly and disgustingly walked away, and neither of them moved, but kept smoking the entire time we were getting our kids into the car. We are both so disappointed in this experience and do hope something is done. I'm not sure we will feel comfortable returning to this location again anytime soon, which is unfortunate because we are in the area regularly and love Thundercloud. read more
