I used to enjoy this place until I was told I was lying by the lady who took my to go order. I ordered chicken fajitas as I do not eat beef due to a dietary restriction. When my husband got home and realized they gave me beef, I called and the same woman told me "Even though you said beef and I not wrong, I will give you chicken. We will not remake the vegetables." The vegetables were sitting under the beef. And by this point, they were cold. So, I'm stuck with cold, beef saturated vegetables I can't eat and told that I was lying when I know exactly what I ordered. The black bean dip is awesome. Some foods tend to be to salty for me so will only review what I can eat that are not to salty. Chili reno with chicken about the best I have had ever. Chicken Monterrey very good and so much food.. Bistic beef is very good but last time we got was much to hot. Could not even eat it was to spicy and I am pretty tuff. Another good Yelp find! We were in town on business and wanted some good Mexican food, so we did what any good Yelper would do and looked for a 4 star or more place with a good number of reviews and found Tio Carlos. We started with the chorizo queso and it was great. Our server mixed it up table side after heating it by pouring a full shot of Everclear in it, lighting it and mixing it up. I've never seen it prepared this way, but it tasted great. They also start you out with chips and salsa and some black bean dip. Stick to the black bean dip if you don't like your salsa with some kick. I like some spice to my salsa and theirs is good. I ordered the brisket tacos at the recommendation of our server. They were very good. The meat was juicy and had good flavor. The brisket is not BBQ style, so beware of that prior to ordering depending on what you are looking for. The service was good and we enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back. ******** My Standardized Yelp Ratings 5 stars - This is for a place that I see as one of the best at what they do (steaks, sandwiches, BBQ, seafood, etc). 5s are for places I've been several times (typically) at least and never had an "off" experience. The food quality, service, price and atmosphere are all going to meet or exceed expectations. 4 stars - This is for a place that is good, I would drive a little out of the way to go, and the food and service is good, but maybe not amazing. Also for me, this could also be a great place that serves Pepsi products - automatic 1 star loss - bad management decision. 3 stars - This is for a place that I view as standard. I have been to this location a couple times and the food and drinks are good and reasonably priced. The staff is friendly, but the last time I was there on Cinco de Mayo I was disappointed in the service. I'm not sure if our waitress was new or she was just overwhelmed but we asked for silverware, chips, and salsa multiple times to the point I just ended up going behind the hostess counter and getting them myself. Good Mexican food. I came for lunch. The restaurant was busy. We were sat at an awkward table but it worked. Then we proceeded to wait for both water and chips and salsa. I live nearby and eat here at least once or twice a month. The service and food are good. The fresh warm chips come with salsa and a warm bean dip that is really excellent. I love the beans and rice here. This is not a fancy place, but it is a comfortable, large, quiet sit-down restaurant. The fajitas are great. There's also a deck if you want to eat outside; I haven't tried it. There's a Mexican bakery next door if you want some take-home treats after your meal. The people who run this place are warm and friendly. My cousins and their young child were in town once and I took them. The next time I went back, the hostess/owner (?) asked me, "Where is the baby??" That was sweet. First impression was probably just another Tex-Mex joint. That is NOT the case! This restaurant is the Latin culture all wrapped into one spot. Argentine, Cubano, Mexican, Salvadorian...ALL delicious! Chips, salsa & black beans were served first. Beans were hot, salsa fresh & chips crunchy. The pupusas were amazing! They came with the traditional curtido, refried beans & Mexican rice. The shrimp tacos were sautéed with a red sauce and tossed in queso before stuffing into a corn tortilla. They were served with cilantro rice & black bean soup. The black beans were so great! Fresh and not canned, which makes all the difference. If you haven't tried this place I highly recommend it! We came here for lunch. The blanco queso is fantastic with their chips that are fresh and thin. The taco salad is really good here. I split it with another person and we got the combo chicken/beef. I really liked the beef as it was flavored great. The street tacos here are really good. The beef ones were flavored really well. The pastor actually comes with pineapple and it was good. The Absolute taste bud experience. Had the queso appetizer with ground beef. The Free chips and salsa was mild in intensity, tasty and delicious. For some reason the diet coke served in this restaurant has the best flavor I have ever tasted anywhere. Diet coke drinkers delight! I was fortunate enough to try the steak fajitas. I had high hopes after reading the reviews, but the food was just okay. The chips improved when I sprinkled a little salt on them. The salsa had a decent flavor, but the black bean dip was the saving grace for my dinner. It added more flavor to my fajitas as did the guacamole which had a good taste. I ordered a white queso dip and what came out was a cross between cream of mushroom and microwaved queso. I had to send it back as it was not good at all. They kindly replaced it with two scoops of guacamole. The flour tortillas tasted like warmed up store bought tortillas. The Mexican rice with my fajitas was a bit bland. Our friends took us here last night for our first time. My hubby has lived in Irving for over 20 years and never knew this spot was here. The food was phenomenal! I had the chile relleno and my hubby had the beef enchiladas. I can't remember what my other friends had, but let's just say their plates were cleaned as well! Our waiter Sam was fantastic as well.
