We recently moved to Irving from the Rio Grande Valley, where truly good, authentic Mexican food is not hard to find. Being in North Texas has been more challenging when it comes to satisfying our high demands. But, seeing the good reviews on Yelp, my sons and I decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. We knew when the chips and salsa, with bean dip, came out that it was going to be good. The chips were clearly homemade and had that light texture that is hard to find. The salsa and bean dip also tasted homemade and were perfect. One son ordered the taco salad. It came in a huge, fried taco shell and was full of savory chicken. My other son and I ordered tacos al carbon, which is a traditional authentic Mexican dish. It was very good, though we both thought that the beef was a tad too chewey. Holy burrito! It was a deep fried love affair the minute she put the plate in front of my face! I love places like this, small and delicious! I cannot wait to go back and try with my husband. A friend and I were looking for good grub after a conference and went out of our way to try this place, well worth the trip. The staff is friendly, prompt and check to make sure you're good without being intrusive. Plenty of fresh, hot chips and good salsa and a tasty black bean dip. I had the carne asada and my friend had shrimp tacos for mutual grazing, all of it terrific. Everything was spiced just right, the shrimp and carne asada were tender and flavorful and good sized portions. I ordered a skinny Margarita but asked for a slice or two of fresh jalapeño to be added and they were happy to oblige. We also ordered churros and sopapillas for dessert (we were stuffed but couldn't resist) and they came out hot and fresh. I seem to mostly keep finding Keepers when I'm traveling someplace where I'm not likely to be very often, and this fit that description as well. Great resturant they make enchiladas like they do in san antonio with the red tortillas. I wish they were 6.50 everyday not just Wednesday mexican food is so expensive in North texas. The portions are good here and so is the service. I will always come bk here but i wish it was cheaper. I do appreciate good mexican food and convenience. I called one time and they didnt answer for like an hr so I went up there really upset and realized they were having a family repass dinner for their own family. My favorite texmex place (perhaps the only second one in dallas that I like and would recommend). I always get the house margarita and brisket quesadillas (enough to eat for 2-3 people). A bunch of out-of-towners needed some good Mexican food and margaritas, and Tio Carlos stepped up to the plate and hit it out of the park. Service was attentive and fast, the food was really good, and the margaritas were delicious and strong (and cheap -- only $5 during happy hour!). The bean dip served with the chips was awesome, and they kept it coming with giant bowls of the dip and more chips when we devoured them. And then the brisket enchiladas came... I could almost hear George Takei standing next to the table saying "Ohhhhh myyyyyyy." When everything was said and done, the servers had already split up our bills individually without being asked, which was awesome, and the price was really reasonable especially considering the quality and amount of food and drink. Pro's - Service couldn't have been better. Waitstaff helped each other, which I rarely see these days. Other waiters checked on me as they passed by. Good decor. My Tio Carlos Margarita was outstanding, as it should be for $11. It's Top Shelf liquor and made perfectly. Cons- Silverware is the cheapest possible! Very annoying. Your prices aren't cheap and your utensils shouldn't be either. My $8 Chicken Enchiladas off the lunch menu with rice and beans were only so-so. Sour cream sauce was bland with a strange texture. I came due to the positive reviews on Yelp. I will come back, sit in the bar and give them another chance to WOW me. The potential is there but they just miss the mark. This place is great! Amazingly fresh chips with red and black bean salsa. The menu is true to its name options include Argentinian steaks, Cuban dishes and they have plantains and yuka fries. We had the yuka and chicharron app and it was delicious they paired it with the Salvadorian salad! The egg enchiladas are also amazing. The soft egg joins the enchilada sauce to make a delicious combination. The brisket is true to a Texas taste and flavors. I've never had an avocado enchilada until today and it was made with real quality ingredients. Overall a great experience we will be back! read more

I have been here a few times before and based on those meals would give them four stars, but the meal I had today was nothing less than a five! I ordered the grilled salmon salad, but beforehand I noticed its price was about the same as the grilled salmon plate. I asked the waiter if the fish portion was the same size for the salad as it was for the platter. He said yes, so I ordered away. The salad comes with raspberry vinaigrette dressing, but since I hadn't previously tried it I asked for ranch on the side. When my salad arrived I was very pleased to see a nicely sized piece of fish sitting atop the salad greens and accompanied by generous slices of tomato, cucumber, and avocado. I cannot express how delicious the salmon was! It was perfectly cooked - nicely seasoned with a light crispness outside, juicy and flakey in the inside. The salad greens were a mix of spring greens and baby spinach and were so fresh that I didn't have to use dressing at all. This salad is so, so good and I cannot wait to have it again and again!! read more

My wife and I went to this place for the first time tonight. She ordered the brisket tacos and said they were really good. I tried them and have to concur. I had cheese and beef enchiladas. They too were really good. The waiter we had was excellent and very attentive to our table. He was very knowledgeable as well and knew the menu front to back. We had mango margaritas. I love this place. My boyfriend and I come here all the time!! We love the Carne Asada lunch special. The chips and salsa are tasty!! Rhey also give you bean dip with the salsa! A mexican restaurant with quality chips and salsa is important to me. I love the margaritas too but they are a little pricey $8. The glass isn't anything big and fancy i woukd order more of them if they were maybe $6 or if they were stronger. The staff is very nice and the restaurant is clean. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the inconsistencies. We order the Carne Asada lunch special and split it. Normally they split the plate for us and it has a lot of meat. Today for lunch when we said we were splitting it the waitress gave us 2 small side plates, I mean small, instead of splitting it for us. A tortilla was bigger than them. There wasn't as much Carne asada meat like the times before. She also only brought us 3 tortillas when in the past we normally get 5. My favorite little hole in the wall Mexican place. My co-workers and I come here almost 2 - 3 times a month! The food is wonderful! The salsa isn't too spicy but fresh tasting. The bean dip is savory and mouthwatering. I have had multiple food items. The pollo asado will never steer you wrong because it is savory, that has spices that hit many of your taste buds. The carne asada is charred nicely and not spicy but flavorful. The enchiladas are so great both the cheese and chicken! The chicken is tender and moist. The BEST part is that they make their margaritas according to the customer's specifications! Service is impeccable! Not many places do that these days without whining a little bit or saying they do not have all the ingredients. Nothing of that sort happened at @Tio Carlos. I even got to recommend my favorite margarita to 2 customers at the bar and they LOVED IT! As far as the food goes, I think the quality is above average but it can be better by adding a little more flavor and spices. In closing, I would definitely came back here but only for thge drinks an dapetizers and not so much for the food. Chose this place based solely on Yelp reviews. We were very impressed. I had a quesadilla (I filled up on chips and queso before I ordered) and it was so good. Instead of a half folded tortilla I received a plate of quesadilla goodness! No one at our table could finish their meals as the portions are huge. Came in after a funeral for my grandfather and immediately greeted and seated right away. Of course it probably helped being in the Marine uniform, but Tio Carlos came by personally introduced himself and made us feel welcomed. Cute interior establishment but my food was questionable...Aside from the taste being ok, I am a little concerned about the chicken in the Taco Salad. The shredded chicken looked pinkish in color which had me a bit worried. Although the server did inform me it was a marinade that gave it that color, I am a bit sceptic. We both really liked this place. This is almost the definition of a hole in the wall place. Very friendly atmosphere and staff is great. It is not super expensive and has nice size portions. The food is also very good and we have never had a problem. We like to go on Taco Tuesdays and Fajita Wednesdays. O'Connor Rd.; it was a great place for lunch, since it's located close to the "183" exit. We were seated and served quickly and the food is good enough for you to want to visit often.
