We walked in and grabbed a seat near the huge opened window in the front. We weren't very hungry as we had a slice of pizza @ Joes not too far away, so drinks were all we needed. I love this place for late night romps when tapas/appetizers are in order or when you just want to drink and have a little something to eat while you're at it. Food is pretty good--I dont know what other people are complaining about. This isn't Mexico so you'll be hard pressed to find the authentic Mexican food, everyone seems to have had but can't recommend anyone else to go to! As for service, I can say my hubby was none too pleased with our waiter since he only spoke to me for the most part. Second time I visited this establishment, and both times left happy. First off, restaurant itself is cute. Both times it was warm enough to be sitting outside so the large storefront was open. Granted there were no tables, so we sat in the back. I would always ask to sit in the back. It's a small, garden-like section that's perfect for a date night. A hair quieter and brighter than the main dining area. Service is good, nothing to get excited over, but you won't leave cursing your server either. Drinks are a highlight here. Their margaritas are delicious, as is their awesome flavored martini list. Coconut martini-delicious. Chocolate-A+. Banana? Not so much :) heard the pumpkin was amazing but not a fan, so didn't try. Very easy to get very drunk here. They are strong! Ordered guac, chorizo, calamari and shrimp for appetizers (not all at one time...not that huge of a cow :) the standout was the chorizo. Very good! Calamari had a delicious sauce with it, but just meh in my book. Guac prepared tableside, love that. The standout dish here I would say are their paella. They have a bunch of different ones and they're awesome sized portions. I had the chicken....flavoring was great, and my friend has the seafood. Also delicious. Tío Pepe is a Spanish and Mexican restaurant in the West Village with such a romantic ambiance. As an appetizer, the waiter recommended us to have the special coca, which is like a Spanish pizza, and we were blown away by how delicious it was. Then we order arroz con pollo and the entrecôte, some glasses of red wine, and everything was delightful. For dessert we shared una crema catalana (creme brûlée). For me, who heard so much about this dessert, I expected something more... it was like a blunt flan, but I don't know anything about creme brûlés, anyway. At the end, the waiter brought us complimentary drinks after the coffee, so we felt really appreciated as customers, well done! I fully recommend this place. I was extremely skeptical at first as the restaurant appeared empty but it is the Sunday right before Christmas so I walked in optimistic! We were immediately sat at a great table right near the window which was nice. Then immediately served water. Our appetizers included the croquettes & garlic shrimp. The shrimp was sizzling! The croquettes were out of sight- they are a must!!! The sauce they come with is a lovely touch. Our entrees were even better than what we expected. My night class is math so I decided not to drink (im lost as it is) I have heard great things about the sangria tho. They also give you chips and a side of beans and rice. 5 Stars for the service...my waiter was actually quite cute. 5 starts for the music...sweet aventura jams....( I did date a handsome mexican gentleman once and I went through a reggeton stage in my late teens lol) 1 Star for the bathroom..guys im sure you don't care but ladies it was a calamity! I came on a Saturday evening around 7 pm with three friends. Service was extremely slow, and when it did appear was very impersonal and brisque. They might have been understaffed. Food was good, but nothing to write home about. Food, drinks, etc. took forever to come, wait staff was nowhere to be found in general, and you could not get their attention to save your life. There was a mariachi band that, while pretty good, played in a different section of the restaurant, facing a different direction, and later came around to awkwardly demand tips from every table. Some of the clientele was very rowdy and obnoxious, hooting, laughing or arguing loudly in public. Overall, I was embarrassed to have asked my good friends to try this restaurant with me. All of this is sad to say, because physically the restaurant looks very good; it's a great space in a prime location. I think it's just very poorly managed. read more

Again, I imbibed here Friday after work. Happy hours drinks and tapas are at the bar ONLY. I sat at the bar and ordered a happy-hour-priced Coconut Margarita ($5, I think). After a failed attempt of getting a table at Las Ramblas where wait times were in the 40+ minute range, we decided to check out neighboring Tio Pepe Restaurant, which is owned by the same proprietor. Tables were plenty, and the hostess quickly seated us in the back room, which sort of looks like an enclosed and glassed-in greenhouse. The back room ambiance was not the promising, slightly dark and eerily cold. I would have much preferred to sit in the cozier and more lively front room, which had more of a Spanish flare to it. For starters, we order the much-talked about Guacamole ($12.00) which was prepared right beside our table. A gentleman took a large-sized mortar and pestle and mashed the Hass avocado, onion, cilantro, tomato, and jalapenos. The guacamole was solid, fresh with a subtle zest, though the portions were scant. After about 6-8 spoonfuls, the guacamole was gone. I found it way too expensive and unsatisfying. I'd probably just stick with the complimentary fresh tortilla chips and red salsa that they serve to you regardless. The red salsa is refreshing and has a nice kick to it. The Mojito ($10.00) was decent, though nothing I'd order again. It didn't have that vibrant and refreshing taste that I come to expect from an excellent Mojito. It was very strong with alcohol, but I found it to be somewhat muddled in flavors, making for a minty but somewhat drab cocktail. For our party of 2, we ordered: - Pulpo a la Gallega ($11) - octopus served Galician style, which consists of octopus sauteed with a sweet Spanish paprika, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and a few pieces boiled potatoes for added starch. The octopus was soft and tender, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well seasoned and delicious it was considering how little ingredients this dish required. The little kick that it had from the Paprika definitely amped up the quality of the dish. - Nachos Camperos ($10) - traditional nachos topped with melted cheese, diced red peppers, choice of meat (chorizo, chicken or beef), and a thick slice of a pickled jalapeno. Eight pieces, dare I say 8 chips, were included. Served in the middle was a bed of chopped cabbage, topped with sour cream. It was tasty, especially with the pickled jalapeno that added some heat to the nachos. But putting all things aside, this dish could have been easily prepared at home. The chorizo seemed almost underwhelming and insignificant in this dish. I didn't get any hint of smokiness or heat from the paprika that I come to expect from chorizo. - Paella Valencia ($20) - This dish was pretty tasty, consisting of seafood, chicken, chorizo and saffron rice. With all the ingredients, you may think the dish would be gigantic, but to keep things in perspective, only about 2 Littleneck clams, 4 mussels, 2-3 pieces of chicken, (chorizo? I can't remember seeing it) and several pieces of calamari and shrimp were included. The dish was delicious in all its sodium-induced flavor probably attributed to the broth. It had a deep flavor and I was really able to smell the saffron. The seafood was cooked perfectly, still retaining its firmness without being chewy, and the rice was cooked to softness. A solid dish, though far from being a top favorite for paella. I was steadfast on giving Tio Pepe four stars, but after writing my review, there were a lot of flaws I couldn't overlook. Prices were somewhat high for the small portions that you got. The flavor of the dishes were solid, but something felt so amateurish. Could it be the presentation, or the quality of the ingredients used? And then comes the eery ambiance and disgusting bathroom that were run down and felt like I was in some grimy bar. Because of that, Tio Pepe deserves three stars. read more

Make sure you request the chips, otherwise they will forget to bring them out. The seafood paella is excellent, it has a lot of flavor and a lot of seafood (shrimp, scallops, and mussels). The cactus salad was not very impressive, as we didn't taste much of the cactus. The sangria was really good. Ugh, I hate writing bad reviews. It's a downer. Anyways, consistency. Consistency is key. I think not having consistency is even worst than going to restaurant and having a bad experience, I'll explain why. I've been to Tio Pepe before, and I had a pretty good experience. Had some guac, which was okay, their goat cheese flat bread pizza, and other things. I decided that I would then have friends join me for my birthday brunch. I'm telling everyone how good it'll be and which dishes to try. What an embarrassment. The food was gross and I could tell everyone would move their forks around as they tried to eat it, but never took a bite. The only thing that was edible was their french fries. They brought out a slice of cake for my birthday which I thought was sweet, until I realized it said "Happy BErthday". Whatever, not a big deal. Here comes the bill. WARNING, if you're eating here, and they bring something to your table saying you ordered it, DO NOT KEEP IT. Their waiters brought about three items, which we did not order, and we made them aware of. They said to keep it anyways. We did, but when the bill came, they insisted we asked for it. Their was a random charge on our bill which the manager refused to explain. We asked for an itemized bill explaining everything, but yet he could not explain this random charge. He kept changing his story about what it was. After about 5 people spoke to him to try and clarify things, and we spent an extra hour there trying to figure it out, I just decided we pay the bill, and leave. To say this was an unnecessary stress, was the least. He was not willing to explain the extra charge. Tio Pepe, please do not ask your guests to keep items of food they did not order and then expect them to pay for it. Also do not add extra charges without having a valid reason as to what they are. No wonder your restaurant was empty, that should've been the warning sign. Lastly, chicken and waffles ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SOGGY & make your omelette adult sized, not the size of the palm of my hand. read more

Overall, food and service is good. But a little pricy for what you're getting. Ordered a paella de pollo. The chicken was a little dry but the rest of the dish is good. My biggest concern with ordering rice dishes is sometimes the rice gets hard or really dry. But the rice in the paella wasn't dry or hard which balances out the dry chicken. I've been here for brunch on two occasions. The first was with a few friends. The second was with a larger party, about 15 people, for my birthday. The staff was great and attentive as we definitely had a lot going on in terms of ordering.
