Far be if for me to rain on the love parade in Columbia for Today's Catch but I can only address my experience today. $30 a pound... for cod? Isn't cod the classic fish and chips ingredient? Something you can get battered, cooked and served hot and ready to eat at any chippie in the British Commonwealth at two in the morning - with free fries - wrapped in a newspaper for an awful lot less than this cod! I mean, the cod at Today's Catch costs as much as the rockfish next to it. By contrast, Giant currently offers cod at $12 for TWO POUNDS. Sure, maybe Today's Catch IS better and fresher - but is it 5X better? For cod? Yikes. read more

I went in here a number of months back when me and a friend met up at the Starbucks in Columbia to hang out. It's a small store, reminds me of the cozier counter deli's in New York City, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't have a lot of seafood to sell. The first time I came, I decided to go with the seafood monger's suggestion on salmon. He said it was their most popular salmon by far ( I think they have about 3-4 different types). And to my surprise, it was easily one of the most delicious pieces of salmon I'd cooked up at home until that point. The next time me and my friend went to meet up in Columbia, I made in point in saying that I wanted to stop by Today's Catch Seafood lol. Ever since I had that salmon the first time, I wanted to get it again. Now, I live in Gaithersburg, so a bit of a ways from here. And I usually purchase my seafood from Costco. Sorry... I eat a lot of seafood and am on a budget. And I'll be honest, the seafood here is a bit pricey - especially compared to what I would get at Costco for my money. But the old adage resonates loudly in that price comparison. You pay for what you get. The quality of the seafood here... well let's just say that Costco's doesn't hold a candle to it. If you're in the area and want to treat yourself to some legit fresh and delicious seafood, I'd recommend you stop by. Just one note: the two times I have been in here most of the workers were not wearing masks. I'm assuming they've been vaccinated. That said, you can easily get in and out of here in less than 2 minutes. They are incredibly efficient, usually have plenty of people to help you, and a large seafood refrigerator separates you from the employees 90 percent of the time. I'm very much looking forward to going back. The second time I picked up the same salmon (I wish I could remember the specific name - but just ask for the most popular one and they'll know what you're talking about), some cod, and some shrimp. Better customer service is needed. I realize it's busy on Dec 23rd but your sign said closed Monday, with the door locked. We had a pick up at 10 but the door was locked. I knocked everyone just looked at me left me out in the cold without offering to tell me I needed to come back at 11. I wouldn't have minded coming back I just found the sign confusing and misleading. When I did get in I found everyone to be quite rude. read more

I called ahead of time due to the size of my order. Upon arriving I was greeted immediately. That may seem small. But, you'd be surprised how often customers are ignored when they walk into an establishment. I gave my name and they began preparing my order. I asked questions about the difference in cuts and fish. All of my questions were happily answered. The seafood display was clean and everything looked so fresh. I ended up adding large shrimp and some seasonings to my order. I will definitely be back and plan to try something new!! read more

We went to Today's Catch for our first time. The quality of the fish was terrific and the price reasonable. I was disappointed with the customer service-- I walked into the store 1.5 hours prior to closure and requested a red snapper whole fish. One of the workers scoffed at me and stated they typically do not provide that service so close to closing. I apologized (it was my first time visiting the store and I was unaware of this policy). He responded extremely sarcastically with, "I am sure you are sorry." His co-worker was nice and picked up the slack to quickly complete the order and provided a good service. Privately owned business operating here for decades (they just moved to a different side of the village center during the remodel). Although this was a small market, the selection was extremely fresh, the store was VERY clean, and the staff was extremely helpful. I was very impressed with the quality and price of the seafood - top notch! The employees took the time to inspect each oyster before bagging them for us and labeled the area each of the two varieties we got were from. Quite hard to find this place. And when you do, its not very appealing. Place is pretty small and looks kinda run down. But its not about the ambiance or setting. Its about the fish! Walked in and even though the place is small, they have a huge selection of fish you can buy. Many of the fish here are high quality or in other words sashimi grade. Expect prices to be a bit higher. Every time I got fish from here, whether its Monk fish or Salmon, they were amazing. Ate a piece of salmon and it almost melted in my mouth. Delish! Everytime I make the drive out here I think "why don't I make the drive out here more often". This is an honest to god seafood market. You will find fresh incredible fish. The prices are a tad higher than you'd pay at a supermarket, but the quality is leaps and bounds above even the best. The best part is - you can even ask questions about your seafood. They know where it came from, give suggestions on how to cook it, let you know how long you can store it for. They'll encourage you to try something new (I cooked whole fish for the first time since moving down here, a couple of times). I also love that Dave's Organic Market is in the same plaza. I bring an insulated bag, Today's Catch throws in a bag of ice to keep my purchase cold, and then I head over to Dave's to get whatever one-off items I need to cook up the fish. The US produces some of the best seafood in the world - just ask China, they import more of it than we eat. They then ship us farmed seafood they don't eat. As a result, we're polluting and destroying our wild seafood sources, and they're using questionable standards to grow our farmed seafood. Buying locally sourced seafood is not only healthier, not only better for our economy as a whole, not only ethically sounder - it's also just tastier. Let Today's Catch make you believe again in scallops! My wife loves the sweet bivalves, but I have bought too many supermarket scallops that tasted flat. Nothing special about them except the exorbitant price. The Today's Catch Seafood Market in Columbia made me believe again. The clerk told me that they don't always have the bay and sea scallops, but when they do, they're "dry" scallops - which means that they're just scallop. Never been treated. Never been injected with saline solution or however else the wholesalers extend their profits. Today's Catch's scallops were beautiful, a half-pound of sweet, firm flesh sauteed in nothing but butter and the juice of a lime. Today's Catch has a minimal feel. Fish on ice, fillets in coolers. There is a small freezer and a display of spices, but mostly, it is a few clerks, a few fish and you. The smell is right, more sea water than fish. The selection runs from mild tilapia and cod to sushi-grade tuna and strong-flavored mackerel. read more

However, it's evident what their priority is, and that's providing customers with good fish.
