My friends recently moved here and were raving about this place. Naturally I had to give it a try when visiting. Customer service is excellent with friendly staff. The menu is extensive with an assortment on reasonably priced food. My friend ordered the tempura bento box that was just massive. I ordered a roll, unagi and yellowtail sushi with ice tea. We're from out of state (AZ) vacationing at Box Car Hill Campground in Coos Bay. Tokyo Bistro came recommended by one of my hubby's co-worker who use to live in the area and after having lunch here with my hubby and one of our close friends, happy to say, we had a pretty awesome experience. The was restaurant clean, service was good and most importantly, the food was fresh and delicious. Each of us ordered bento boxes, one with Beef Teriyaki and Tempura Shrimp, another Beef Teriyaki with Tempura Vegetables and Chicken Teriyaki with Creamy Crunch Sushi Roll. All came with salad and rice and I believe it was suppose to come with Miso soup but it somehow didn't make it to our table which was no big deal. We also ordered sushi rolls to share, the Pink Lady, Dragon Roll and Lion King (not your typical baked Lion King roll, this one was not cooked and had fresh salmon on it which was still delicious). My review starts a little different than most. I have eaten here before with my brother but decided to go to a different place called Momiji over by the casino in Coos Bay. We called at 5:30 to confirm they still offered the "all you can eat" special. They said yes but they stop serving at 8:00. We got there at 6:00 and had about a 20-minute wait for a table. The waitress came and started taking our orders which was overheard by the sushi chef. He then yelled out "no more all you can eat orders " which left us shocked and in disbelief. We said that we called before coming and were told the special ended at 8:00. The sushi chef yelled out "I'm too busy and backed up". We got up and left...... never to return. Just a few minutes down the road is Tokyo Bistro which never disappoints with their food or service. I had the Humbolt Squid which was grilled to perfection. It comes with miso soup, rice and salad. We are wary of trying sushi restaurants that we are unfamiliar with but took a chance on this one while staying in Coos Bay for a week. We couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. Everything was fresh; the sushi rolls were delicious and not overly sweet. The seafood maintained its integrity without being mushy. We came here because it was highly recommended by friends of ours. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the feel of the inside. My wife and I tried around seven rolls and there was really only one or two that I actually enjoyed. I noticed that the size of the rolls are quite small given the price. Our favorite roll was the Crunchy Salmon which has some nice sprinkling of peanuts on top. I tried a few rolls that the fish was sered and that was a first for me. Personally I didn't think it was tasty. The wait staff are very attentive here and there's good customer service. I guess I would try to come back and find some rolls that I actually enjoyed. read more

Not many choices for sushi here on the coast. This is decent, the best so far. I did not like the vegetable tempura, it is done as vegetable threads, reminding me of calamari more than tempura. I love this little place! Every meal I had here was excellent! They have a pretty extensive menu, and they seem to care about your experience. I've only been there three times, as I was only in Coos Bay for a couple of weeks, but I'd say that, for the area, (only one other sushi place that I could find nearby), a 5 is what I'll give it. I literally spent $18 on my lunch break, and then went thru taco bell for a bean burrito so i could get thru the rest of the day. Hope you find this helpful. No disrespect to restaurant owner. We ordered the omakase which means chef choice in CA and most sushi restaurants. In Charleston, near Coos bay we found a new meaning. Omakase here means you order 2 days in advance. Instead we got a "modified chefs choice". Meaning a mixture of anything they give you. What was disappointing was we did not get toro, mirugai, ikura or uni usually standard with omakase, another dissatisfaction located near the crab pier, was I expected fresh Dungeness crab no where to be seen but was told to ask. The only fresh fish we got was fresh hamachi which was absolutely delicious The cooked shrimp sushi was cooked really firm. Some of the sashimi fish was previously frozen. Staff was very friendly and chef came out to give us all the answers above as stated. My advice would be to call ahead for menu selection. read more

NOPE. We had REALLY high hopes for this place, based on the Yelp reviews. And I hate being "that person" but I want to throw out there that I'm from Bay Area, California.... so maybe we are just spoiled with REALLY good Japanese restaurants and maybe, if you're not as fortunate to have tried good quality Japanese, then this place may be great for you. To each his own... but this review is for those who HAVE had amazing / fresh Japanese food. Do NOT go here. Trying to keep this short... here's a rundown of we got: Lemon Drop Sushi Roll to share - Did NOT taste fresh... tasted VERY fishy (and I know that seems strange when you're eating fish but people who enjoy good quality sushi will know what I'm saying). Told the waiter we didn't care for it much. My son got the Teriyaki Dinner - this was ridiculous... $15 for about a cup and a half of PROCESSED (and likely previously frozen because some pieces were COLD) "chicken"... and the teriyaki sauce was disgusting and practically flavorless... more than half the plate was this weird HUGE pile of shredded veggies that were not seasoned or anything... this dish was worth about $3 ... I'm amazed they've gotten away with serving this stuff for that much, it tasted like what I imagine dog food to taste like. And I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to save people because I saw bad reviews about their teriyaki chicken and I didn't listen ... and we ALSO got I got the Maui bento box (with teriyaki chicken and veggie tempura).... $17... I couldn't even eat the chicken because what I said above and asked the waiter if it was processed and previously frozen chicken... he said it was fresh and that the chef just cooked it... NO.... that was a lie AND that's a problem if it WAS because some of it was cold.... but I know for a fact it was processed. And the vegetable tempura!?!?!? Who the heck wants shredded tempura veggies??? Way more unhealthy and you cant even taste the veggies!!!! I expressed my unhappiness with everything.... and even though the waiter was very nice... most places would offer to make you something else OR to give you a credit since you weren't going to eat it... but not one offer to make anything right or to try and make my $50 dinner worth $50... nothing... so we paid $50 and asked for a to-go box, took it back to hotel, rinsed off the bland teriyaki sauce and fed it to our dog. read more

I normally get the chef's special that way I can compare sushi restaurants truly by their chef but this one was way over priced. $45 is the base price and it only goes up from there. Really to bad, the fish was cheap. Frozen gas treated tuna, escolar, and salmon was most definitely bottom of the barrel farmed Atlantic. That quantity of salmon should not be served raw. I can justify the one star based on the live prawn they have, they called them ama ebi even though they are botan ebi. I can believe that the chef just didn't know the difference and isn't trying to rip off her customers. Service was fine from the server but getting anything from the "chef" was like pulling teeth from a chicken. Ambiance is tacky. I'm sure this place is only getting good reviews because of the lack of knowledge from guests and a lack of competition. read more

My mom and I picked up two bento boxes for lunch and both were excellent value. She got seared salmon and a California roll. I got vegetable tempura and a Cali roll. Both included rice and a very lovely fresh salad. All dishes tasted excellent and fresh. I really enjoyed the Kakiage-style vegetable tempura. Another poster complained about the presentation, but this is typical of this tempura style. Kakiage is nice because it's more surface area for crunch. We also split a hamachi nigiri which tasted fresh off the boat. read more
