And because there's a huge population of…read moreJapanese on the Aloha State, it's not surprising that this restaurant reminds me of the mom and pop places that you find on the island. It's a small restaurant but the nostalgia of the interior cannot be denied. And it turned out some of the staff are from Hawaii too so it just adds to the warm, friendly atmosphere you can expect from a place like this. As for the food, just as good and impressive. My dad and I had their chirashi or rice with different seafood varieties and my mom had one of their teishoku or combination plates. They said it's a sushi restaurant but I guarantee they have more than that at Tanaka. If you decide to try it, which I recommend you do, call and make a reservation because unfortunately you can't do it online and it's a small restaurant so it's better to call ahead of time anyway. Once you try this terrific restaurant, it's worth it!

Don't judge this place by its exterior. The inside is absolutely beautiful--homey, welcoming, and…read moresurprisingly refined. There are so many thoughtful little details in the décor that make it feel special. Every server and staff member was genuinely kind and impressively hospitable, offering a level of service that honestly surpasses some higher-end restaurants I've been to. Now, the food. Their ginger salad might be the best I've ever had. They use romaine and green leaf lettuce instead of the typical iceberg, which gives it far more flavor and texture. The dressing was smooth and creamy--not broken, watery, or overly acidic like so many ginger dressings tend to be. The miso soup also had more depth of flavor than most versions I've tried. A bonus surprise: they have more lunch options than what's listed online, and the in-person prices are actually cheaper. So don't rely on the website--come in and look for yourself. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and sushi roll combo. They offer a generous selection of rolls to choose from, and I went with the Alaskan roll. The filling was plentiful and well-balanced. The rice on the outside was slightly thin in a few bites where the seaweed peeked through, but the overall flavor was excellent. The chicken teriyaki was outstanding--juicy, tender, perfectly seared, and full of rich teriyaki flavor. I also appreciated the unexpected cold bean sprout salad on the side, which added a nice contrast to the meal. Overall, this was a wonderful lunch at a very fair price--only $15. I'd happily return and highly recommend stopping in rather than making assumptions based on appearances or online listings.

Did not realize that was an unique request..... Shrimp and veggie tempura were hot and crunchy as anticipated. Shrimp shumai were okay - only 4 to an order ( $9). Hamachi roll - did not include any veggies and not much fish to be candid. If you are looking for middle of the road basic offerings, then lunch here would be fine. Even on a busy Friday night, the food was absolutely worth the short wait. The sashimi and nigiri were so fresh and flavorful, the roll was perfectly balanced, and the sushi rice was some of the best I've ever had--tender, seasoned just right, and never dry. I also tried the pork gyoza, which were light, crispy, and such a great starter. When I picked up my order, the staff was warm and welcoming, which makes me want to come back and dine in next time. This place clearly cares about quality and service. If you're coming on a weekend, I'd recommend making a reservation--you won't regret it!

Can't speak for parking as I walked over. You'll have to call and ask or drive around and check it out for yourself. I didn't make a reservation but as busy as it got, I'd recommend it just in case. I sat at the Sushi bar - there's also a bar - but if you want a table - that's where it got busy, then busier when I finished up and left. Service was great! Sitting at the Sushi bar, the crew behind the counter was busy but the wait staff checked up on me like I was a VIP. I didn't even need to ask - someone was there to follow up. Not hovering. Just great timing. They do not offer Sashimi sets thus what you see in the pics I posted. Not complaining - I got my fix later in the week. But enjoyed the meal from appetizer, to dessert and the drinks in-between. I especially enjoyed the Yellowtail Jalapeno - nice punch of flavor - same for the Crab Sunomono. The Margarita Roll had a little kick - not spicy for me but if you're sensitive to spicy heat - might want to avoid. Grabbed the Banana Tempura for dessert. Figured it would pair well with the Banana Bread Old Fashioned. It didn't. Little to strong for it. That's on me. But enjoyed the separately. Next time I'd order something that doesn't overpower the dessert. But next time I might just say it's two desserts - the second being of a liquid variety. Anyway, would I go back? Lots of other places to try but I wouldn't hesitate if someone wanted to go and asked me to tag along.

We were seated on the second floor and our server handled our party of 6 with ease. The sake list is very extensive, and I really enjoyed the few that I tried. What's more, the glassware they use to keep the sake cool was...COOL (check the pictures, but you should order some and see for yourself)! We were also pleasantly surprised by the decently priced but beautifully executed menu. Try the golden California roll if it's your speed. I think half of us got to-go orders after having a wonderful dinner (shoutout to our server for alerting us before the kitchen closed for the night), and we're already planning our next outing!

When I first had their ramen that's all I could think about when we visited Atl. After moving in the area and having this on a random Tuesday night idk what it was but I got their spicy kimchi ramen and my husband got their tonkotsu ramen and it lacked flavor. I asked for spicy Sichuan pepper sauce on side and all it was doing with a tiny bit in my ramen was making my tongue tingle the whole time. It kind of ruined my appetite. I had this better and not sure why that happened. I was charged extra without being informed of this and I gave her the whole sauce back after telling the server about this. I just like being informed of what I will be charged extra for, that's all. Anyways, overall did not appreciate this location at all.

The short, thin hostess at the front repeatedly rolled her eyes behind our backs while seating us. I didn't notice it at the time, but our friend pointed it out towards the end of our meal, and it left a very negative impression. Our server was also inattentive. He checked on nearly every table around us multiple times but rarely came by ours. We ordered over $150 worth of food for just the two of us, yet received very little service. Despite that, we still left a 20% tip. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing as well. A lot of the food arrived cold. The quality and taste were nowhere near as good as what we remembered from previous visits. After giving this restaurant multiple chances, we can confidently say we will not be returning.
