We asked locals where to eat reasonably around Avon and this place was suggested. It was very busy on a Thursday evening. I just love the 50's vibe with the vinyl seating and chrome. We both chose the cheese burger with a side of macaroni salad. Normally at a fast food place you cannot get a burger medium rare but here you can. I was surprised it was not over cooked and was tasty. The Mac salad was kinda bland but ok. We split one of their homemade hard ice creams(chocolate almond) and it was amazing! Big portion for a small and loaded with roasted almonds. So many almonds we were in heaven. I would definitely come back if in the area (especially for the ice cream). read more

We had a great $23 lunch for two yesterday - a cheeseburger, a Texas Red Hot, fries, and drinks. The Zweigle Red Hot was mine, and it was served split with relish, onions, and ketchup. I can't tell you how good it was! The ordering process was a snap. What a delicious chocolate milkshake to go with a grilled chicken sandwich complete with tomatoes and lettuce made a yummy lunch upon my visit to my former home area. Today my husband and I went to Tom Wahl's in Avon for lunch. The food is not like it used to be, the budget cuts are obvious but the prices way up. My complaint the ice machine near the drink dispensers was empty when we filled our glasses which I filled and sat in a booth. My husband picked up the order and as he was carrying two trays with food he slid and bent backwards to catch his balance straining his back, The ice machine was spewing out ice uncontrollably and was all over the floor. The employee was trying to make it stop. My husband told another employee that ice and water were all over the floor. No one mopped it up, they placed a wet floor sign on another area but not where it was dangerous. His back is strained, pain radiating from center to the left. No one there seemed to have any training in cleaning up spills etc. Several other customers kept telling my husband 'woah! Great save!' As he avoided actually crashing to the ground. It was embarrassing but also troubling enough that they left it like that for someone with less coordination to get seriously injured. What happened to Tom Wahl's? The food, the service, and the safety are all lacking now. read more

Growing up in Rochester, Tom Wahls was a great place to go. Since moving to Buffalo we just don't get there that often. So I was very happy when invited to a wedding and finding out that they were catering the event. The menu was limited but included the most important items. Obviously their cheeseburger, their version of a garbage plate, root beer floats, and ice cream, plus a few other items. I had the cheeseburger and fries followed by a dish of chocolate ice cream. Just seeing the cheeseburger made my mouth water! The burgers are thin, which prefer but huge and covered with gooey melted cheese. Then topped with their meat sauce! Not sure if their ice cream is their own but was delicious. I know others raved about the root beer floats. Only slight disappointment was the fries, not bad but nothing special. Best part was the service. Quick and friendly. They even before departing left out a plate of food for the dog. Even had his name on it! Though I didn't get a picture. I got bacon cheeseburger, coleslaw & cheese curds. I asked for multi grain buns & it did. Awesome!! Bacon cheeseburger w/ multi grain buns is pretty good. Coleslaw is kinda ok & not too bad. Cheese curds is pretty good & better than Minnesota's famous cheese curd, to be honest. Theres so plenty of tables for customers to dine in! Clean! Staff keep it clean to make us comfortable to eat in. Not cold or not hot, it is just perfect temperature inside. Its cozy warm. After five hours in the car, traipsing across New York via Route 20 to avoid the tolls of I-90, there wasn't much that could get me to stop the car. Just short of my final destination in Buffalo, it was the lure of the "black raspberry soft serve" sign that got me to make a U-turn in a pharmacy parking lot for some roadside eats. I had seen the signs for Tom Wahl's earlier on the same road and thought nothing of it. The burger on the billboard looked tasty enough, but not enough to think of filling my stomach before getting to the city on the lake and it's famous beef on weck sandwiches. "Just ice cream. Just one cone and you're done, Lucas. Beef and wings in another hour." That plan fell apart and the little guy in red with horns on my shoulder danced as I ordered a cheeseburger anyway. The smell of freshly cooked beef wafted from the exhaust fans as I got out of the car. I knew I was a goner. The burger was as thin as could be atop the fluffiest roll imaginable. The patty as big as the plate it came on. Ketchup and mustard in proper proportions. Not much to argue there. Within seconds it was gone. I almost went back for a garbage plate, but I had ice cream to contend with. The black raspberry was good, but not as good as the peach soft serve. The raspberry almost had a medicinal flavor to it. Stood at ice cream counter for more than 8 minutes and zero workers acknowledged me. Two young ladies were back there. Even if you're that busy, at least make eye contact or say something! Very impressed with the food and service at lunch today. Probably the best cheeseburgers around, huge, tasty, and cooked perfectly. The order takers snd servers were all very friendly and personable. But perhaps the most amazing thing was when I went back in for ice cream and the end of the lunch hour, the manager was thanking his workers for doing a good job during the rush. We normally love Tom Wahl's, but today was different. My husband and I stopped in to get a couple burgers and fries for take out. As if $32.00 for two cheeseburgers, two fries, and one root beer wasn't ridiculous enough, the wait for our food was even worse. Then to top it off, we got home and opened the bag to find that only one of the cheeseburgers was in there. The fries were uncooked and pretty awful. The burger was dry and tasteless. We did call and let them know we were missing a burger. They gave us the option to either come pick it up (a 12 minute ride each way...no thanks) or refund our credit card for the cost of the burger. Tom Wahl's has a very patronizing and comically annoying sign asking you please not to call their Burger a Burger. Apparently burger is a dirty word here. It's a "Ground Round." Perhaps someone should perform a Ground Round-house kick to whoever banned the word burger, and then they can roll a Round on the Ground for a bit. Just kidding. Other that that interesting and quirky idiosyncracy, the best thing about Tom Wahl's is indeed the Ground Round - with extra meat sauce. And it's definitely the standout dish and restaurant in the tiny little town of Avon. And popular with all the Avon Ladies. Though not too popular if they want to keep their figures. This is the flagship location of what has now become a local chain - and it's *the* location to visit for your first Tom Wahl's experience, for sure. If there's one section (south and west face of the building) of the restaurant where S & M "top" people hang out looking for victims, then those are the "Dom Walls." So more about this Ground Round. The roll is fantastic, the sauce is juicy and delicious, and the burger itself is too large for the bun, steaming hot and wonderful. This sort of "meat sauce burger" is really only found in Rochester, and Tom Wahl's makes one of the best 5 versions of it you'll find. Jim's Ground Round, Wimpy's, Schaller's and Nick Tahou's are the other members of the top 5, by the way. If they have pictures of people eating their food all over the place, that's just the "Nom Walls." The custard was good an the small was an enormous size portion, but it was $3, and I found it annoying that they didn't have a baby size version for 2 or less, because I didn't need that much ice cream. It was tasty but nowhere near the level of Abbott's or LuGia's. If they paint their entire restaurant a French shade of Apple-green, then they have "Pomme Walls." I also tried the home made Root Beer, and while I didn't like it as much as Mug N Bun in Indianapolis, it did taste very fresh and unique and homemade, so that also scores a 5 from me. Also, the service was pretty good and fairly friendly, and I love how busy it is and packed full of every kid in Avon. 5 stars all round, for sure. If you like this burger, please also try Wimpy, Schaller's, Nick Tahous and Jim's Ground Round of Spencerport. Garland says: The Soviets helped built a subpar version of this place in East Berlin, so a lot people don't know Reagan meant tear down that "Wahl." Tasted like a root beer float. Cool. Ordered the Swiss mushroom burger. It was awesome! Hand pressed, big on a hard roll with plenty of mushrooms and Swiss melting all over the burger and mushrooms.
