Update 10 years later: Tommy's Restaurant is still keeping San Antonio fed with the best tacos (especially their barbacoa) and Big Red drinks. I was able to stop in for breakfast to fill up before heading back to Austin after a weekend in town. I thought this would be the best spot for me to introduce my friend to a great breakfast before hitting up North IH 35 to head home. We came in on a weekday and with the amount of people eating inside AND the long line that wrapped around the side of the building for people who were waiting for their to-go orders. I was impressed how fast the folks in the drive-thru were getting through even on a week day morning. One of my favorite things about the ambiance is the die-hard San Antonio Spurs memorabilia that lines every booth as artwork. Here you can see all of the best moments and San Antonio Express News articles of our dearest Spurs wins in the past. Breakfast is still cheap but not as cheap as it was 10 years ago! The Huevos Ranchos is still fantastically priced but now at $6.99 (verses $3.99)! Tacos range from $1.50 - $3.00 and that is easily the most affordable homemade taco I have found to be just *chef's kiss* superb! My friend really loved the potatoes and kept saying that her scrambled eggs tasted so so great with the butter mixed in them. Great and fast service from our waitstaff. Been coming here for breakfast lately. I have gotten good service & hot delicious food, consistently. I especially love their salsa, I put that on everything here from tacos to eggs. Its all good. This place gets very busy & now they`ve added a makeshift drive thru to better serve you. As for me, I`d rather save the ozone and get off to order & eat in if possible. Everyone benefits more this way anyhow. I have noticed that a lot of city & county workers come here and I dont blame them. Went thru drive thru , waiting 30 min for 12 tacos . Just to get home and find my order wrong and a piece on metal in my carne guisada . Let's talk about one of my favorite things: breakfast tacos. Keep in mind this review will only be regarding breakfast tacos as: 1) that's all I've ever had here and 2) what more do you really need? This no frills joint serves up some epically tasty tacos. Call ahead and pick them up or dine in, regardless your choice you're in for goodness. Now two tacos is plentiful but on a "morning after" if ye know what I mean, three tacos will set you up for success! My go-to tacos include potato/egg/cheese, papas rancheras, and chilaquiles (and most times guacamole finds its way into my tacos to boot). There is nothing better prepared to soak up the alcohol than these amazing taco creations. Served hot and freshly made, they come in amazing, warm, home made tortillas that stand up to the fillings they're packed to the brim with. Also I am in love with their green salsa found on the table. It is spicy and amazing and I put it on everything! Now it can get busy in here and seating is on a first come basis so keep a sharp eye turned for an open table. Service here is great too. Attentive without being overbearing, the friendly servers always take good care of us. Once you're done then go and pay at the counter and you'll have the perfect start to your morning. While Maria may prefer cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels my tastes are tuned into a slightly different frequency that include big fresh hot tacos top with lots of salsa and that, my friends, is one of my favorite things...and Tommy's brings it every time. I know it's an informal place, but at least come out from behind the booth and greet your customers. Still looking down at phone. The food is subpar. I prefer Nichas hands down! Have been a big fan of this place and would usually visit Silicon Dr location. Went to check out original Nogalitos location and was very disappointed. Asked for limes and was given lemons for caldo??? ordered green sauce and it was rancid and old, was not offered a refill or anything else after my food was brought. They usually have a packed house, but even with all the patrons they seem to get you the food at the perfect time. Tommy's is always packed no matter what day it is. While this is good for business, it can be a little cramped-from the parking lot, to the space inside, to waiting in line to pay. The reason this place is always so packed though is because they roll out consistently good food & they don't skimp on their portions! They serve massive breakfast tacos on fresh tortillas. Even if you have a large appetite, two should be plenty. The potato & egg, bean & cheese, and carne guisada tacos are all solid. The hubs always get the huevos a la Mexicana plate, and he enjoys his food. I typically get coffee, and they are good about bringing me refills, even when they are really busy. Ordered some breakfast tacos over the phone about 20 minutes before we showed up and got some bean & cheese and carne guisada & cheese tacos... I truthfully think that those were the best carne guisada tacos that I've ever had, and that's pretty much hands down... and that says a lot because I'm picky about my tacos. I was there today after hearing the announcement of a city declaration of emergency due to Corona so I wasnt sure if Tommy's would be running....thank God they were open! We heard great things about Tommy's and on one of our restaurant hopping mornings we went to check it out. The parking situation is cramped, especially if it's during busy weekend breakfast or lunch hours. Walked inside and had to ask if we seated ourselves or if we had to wait, they said for us to find our seat. We had a waitress drop off our menus and walk off, she came back for our drink order and wasn't up for small talk when we asked what Tommy's favorites were...awkward! The place is packed with locals and you can tell it's a popular downtown spot, it was lively and loud. We ordered tacos and they came out in less than 5 minutes which leads me to believe that they have warming plates in the back with ready made eggs, bacon, and more. I prefer made to order restaurants. The barbacoa was a bit bland and had large pieces, usually I don't have to chew so much where the barbacoa is tender. The guacamole, beans, and lemonade were great! My sister said her bacon was cold, we both agreed that the tortillas were great. My sis didn't like that she paid $12 for two tacos and a lemonade. I felt I got a good deal with their Big Red and Barbacoa for $5.49. I'll return to sample their lunch offerings! read more
