I have been here several times for breakfast. This place is tasty and cheap! This place is great for omelets in the morning! They have a variety of omelets to choose from and you can also build your own if you want as well. I usually go for a ham, cheese and bacon... Another favorite it the avocado and mushroom and chicken... Each plate comes with your choice of toast and hash browns or tomato if you want some healthier options. Their coffee is nothing to brag about though. I always bring my coffee from home :) They have outdoor and indoor seating, the service is friendly and the owner is most likely behind the griddle cooking in the morning. Recently re-discovered this place, and I can't figure out why I stopped going! It's name has changed since the days I was a teen & young adult, but it's still a top go-to spot for just about whatever you're craving. It's in the industrial west side of Costa Mesa on a corner property with limited parking, but an efficient drive through. 3.5 really, but I am feeling generous today....Tom's Place is an unassuming little corner restaurant on the side of 17th Street - reminds me of a corner sandwich shop back home, except for the conspicuous absence of Italian deli influence and the addition of spectacularly huge burritos. You can choose to eat in, order out, or go through a very small drive through. I'm a big fan of the chicken souvlaki, and the burgers are pretty good, although the buns tend to fall apart a few bites in. Crispy fries pass the takeout test and remain crispy and hot until I get home - the test of a good carryout. After watching them make a breakfast burrito this morning, I can assure you it's the size of a newborn - and looked great, as did the homefries. 3.5 stars for Toms Place! We all knows these types of joints, they sell hamburgers and gyros and everything else under the sun. And they always hit the spot... even if its not the best quality ingredients. I like this place becuase its right down the street from my house, cheap and quick (drive through) Plus you feel less guilty than eating at a fast food chain. Drive thru costumer service is terrible the employee doesn't understand anything you are ordering, not in English not in Spanish, or maybe he doesn't want to or don't care. I love the Ribeye steak sandwich but last time it was awful, looks like the meat was cooked when it was frozen, I told him about it and his response was "I don't cook" really? As an employee you have to take care of the customers that are paying for your salary, he tried to make me look stupid when he was repeating "I don't understand, I don't know " like if I was speaking a language he didn't understand. I'm not coming back, will stop recommending the place and tell my story to anyone I can. Too bad I'm going to take my business to another restaurant. Stopped in to Tom's Place before a gig at Tiki Bar next door. Only had $5 on me (as I'd lost my debit card at some point during the night before's shenanigans) and I was famished. I bought the 8 piece chicken nuggets for $2.59. Service was pretty prompt, only waited a couple minutes before my order was ready. The chicken nuggets were OK, tasted vaguely of everything else that had been fried in there (fish, onion rings, etc), and they were also very greasy. I actually didn't even finish the 8 pieces. I'd go to Tom's Place pre-Tiki again, but hopefully order something with more substance and appeal (assuming my debit card remains in my possession). :) read more

So today I stroll in for my usual lunch, order a salad and the chicken sandwich. When I got my sandwich it was a bit dry, and you always hear these horror stories that, if you return the food, they're going to hate you or do something evil to it. So, I muster up the courage since I frequent this place a lot , and wait for one of the girls to answer me, but guess what? The lead cook sees me with the sandwich and asks what he can help me with . I politely advise that my chicken is overlooked and dry. Within 10 minutes Gabriel( the lead cook - I found his name out!) serves me the best most juiciest chicken sandwich I have ever had! So this is my second time to Tom's Place. The first time I got the breakfast burrito with ham. It was HUGE to say the least.. and great besides the underdone potatoes. So today I felt like going on another grease binge and decided to go back and give it another try. But in the back of my mind I was really hoping for a different potato experience. So I ordered the same thing but asked for well done potatoes and BAM! problem solved! :) Try the salsa as well, its pretty good from a place like this. Honestly, I used to drive past this place after giving living here my whole life and never gave it a chance. Lately, it's my go to for basically anything. The food truly is very good, they have the best carbonation with their soda, and their dipping sauces are amazing. I can honestly taste the love they put into every meal! I'll never judge a book by its cover ever again. Started coming here to save my hangovers, and now I go because I Love how convenient it is for how good the food is. The WORST fish taco I have ever had. I ordered in the drive-through,two grilled fish tacos on corn tortillas. I get to the window and the girl immediately knew she messed up and put in fried not grilled. She was gonna leave it that way too. She asked if I would take the fried. I politely declined. So now I have to wait for them to remake it. I get home and open them, they look good but they are on flower tortillas not corn. I take a bite and the fish is like rubber. Ive lived in costa mesa forever and never been to this place. Its about time i get my Tom's on...Everything you read in the reviews about this place is true. Its got a 70's throwback feel to it. Great people watching especially since its on the "interesting" part of town. I got the breakfast burrito with Bacon and my cohort went for the avocado Burger. I particularly like the cheesy, fake-oil paintings on the wall. Once the food came out I was less than thrilled.... The breakfast burrito was huge.....But pretty boring, salsa sucked. The burger my cohort got was mediocre. The onion rings (cornmeal battered) were meh.... There are too many other places nearby that you can go to, pay the same and get better..... Doubtful that ill come back...... Although they did have pastrami on the menu.....I love me some pastrami. Who knows maybe they have a bomb pastrami...? read more

I always get patty melts at indie burger places like this. I can't get a patty melt at a chain, so why not make the stop something special. The patty melt at Tom's Place is quite good. Definitely not small, it could have a bit more flavor, but it was more than adequate. Drive-thru is a bit slow, but they're making the food to order, I suspect. So, you're getting real cooked food, rather than food from the corporate fast food assembly line. I wish I could say that Tom's Place is mind-bogglingly awesome, but I can't. However, Yay! Can you say live it! Little whole in the wall with a drive through, inside and outside seating. Great fresh food all day long and it's cheap. Your wallet won't cry. I don't normally eat at places like this. You know, the Mom & Pop version of a fast food place that sells burgers, burritos, and pastrami sandwiches. But sometimes Life beats you with a hangover stick and all your body wants is grease and mediocrity. So I ventured on out to Tom's on a Sunday afternoon hoping to recalibrate my body and salvage at least part of the day. Everything here is exactly as expected. Cheap food, traditional menu, everything is just a-ok. I split a Philly cheesesteak and a pastrami sandwich with the BF. I thought the meat on the Philly was pretty tough and not the tastiest, but when you cram melted cheese and sautéed mushrooms and peppers on top it comes together just fine. I was surprised by how much I liked the pastrami-- pretty good quality pastrami for a place like this, served with lots of yellow mustard and pickles. It was just right for a groggy Sunday. Fries, however, were mediocre at best. What I did really like about Tom's is that you get real plates, not baskets, and actual table service. The waitresses were all extremely friendly - to the point where I thought they weren't being genuine and were actually patronizing me, but I'm willing to bet that was the hangover talking. read more
