Amazing little spot in Chinatown that we went to for lunch today with some of the most competitive prices for the area. Got a nice beef brisket noodle soup and a half duck entree for ~$30. No indoor seating but that was fine, as there is a nice little park near by on this sunny summer day. Service is decently quick and efficient. Restaurant has a GOOD health rating so that's at least better than some of the OK restaurant ratings in the vicinity of it. Would come again for their other bargains! read more

This is my first time here and Im impressed. It's not even in the main area of Chinatown so you would have to know about it to look for it. Takeout only and they have a pretty standard menu similar to other bbq shops. Looks like they got the system down and process was very smooth. The guy takes the order and ring the cashier while the lady did the chopping. It was a little busy when I arrived at lunch but it wasn't bad. Even though it was busy, it didn't feel flustered or stressed. It was calm, quiet and busy at the same time. Food wise we got the 2 meat combo. We didn't want rice so he asked if we wanted veggies instead which we agreed. We got a bed of steamed cabbage which went well with the meat. I got the pork cheeks and the BBQ pork. It may be a bit of chaos as you walk in but after a few minutes the lady handling the meat asked me what I wanted. I got the crispy roasted pork and the spareribs. After a 30 min drive, the pork was STILL CRISPY. This does not happen with Kau Kau where the skin gets tough very quickly. I'm not sure what magic they do here but the skin was still crispy hours later. I was not as much of a fan of the spareribs. It was a lot of bone and not much meat. Skip. Ton Kiang's combos is truly one of the best meals you can possibly get in the city. Their cheapest meat plate (one option) drops you only 10 bucks and if you go for the triple combo, it's 15 bucks even with premium options (aka roast duck) while easily feeding two people. It's not just fantastic bang for your buck, the food is genuinely some of the best I've ever had; definitely top two if not truly the best Chinese bbq experiences in my life. It is a to-go only joint though, so you'll have to find another location to dig-in. They take card if you spend over 10 dollars, which is fairly easy. Crispy Roast Pork (4.75/5): I have no idea how they've done this, but the skin is insanely crunchy, fat is rendered so there's no greasy mouthfeel, and the actual protein is moist all the way through. No chewy, dry bites at all, truly a masterpiece. BBQ Pork (4.25/5): Was my least favorite of the three cuts I tried, but that's really a testament to how good the other options are. A couple of the thicker cuts were slightly chewier than I'd like, but great flavor and perfect balance of sweet and savory. Roast Duck (4.5/5): Seasoned ALL the way through, no sauce necessary, and perfectly tender. Not melt in your mouth and still greasy, but in the best way possible. read more

My husband got his usual combo with BBQ Pork (叉烧) and crispy roasted pork (烧肉). The combo meat with rice also comes with some cabbages, I guess to clean the palate and give you some fibers. Unless the NY style we have in NYC, the BBQ pork doesn't come with sauce, but already flavorful enough. I got a little bit of BBQ spare ribs to try, it's flavorful but a little salty for me since I didn't eat it with rice. Probably would be perfect if you eat the ribs with rice. It has been a few years since we were last here, but this used to be our go-to place for salted chicken (when they had two different types of chicken to choose from--Asian or American, and Asian was our favorite). We returned this time to order salted chicken and roasted pork, with very little expectation for the pork since the skin didn't look all that crispy in the photos. However, let me tell you, we were so wrong! The roasted pork was perfect--the meat was flavored just right, with the right amount of fat, so it wasn't dry. The skin was the crispiest I've ever had on roasted pork. On the other hand, the salted chicken, which was once our favorite here, is now mediocre. The chicken meat is soft and a little mushy. Nonetheless, it still seems to be a very popular item because on the day we visited, there were at least ten orders of the chicken packed for takeout. Don't expect too much with the ambiance of the place bc it's literally just your typical hole in the wall Chinese spot that serves bomb food with pretty decent service. It was busy when I came but they were pretty efficient and I was out of there in 10 minutes tops (that's with an order of fried rice on top of the other stuff I got too). I'm not even certain if I can all this a true hole in the wall place, as it is walk-up order for takeaway only. The person taking the order is quick and to the point, and the food came out just as so. All the meats are freshly cut and ready to go, and for the price you pay you get a very generous amount of food. I ordered the two meat combo (bbq duck and crispy pork), which came with a huge bed of rice, Asian cabbage, and a side of soup that was a clear broth with some herbs. Needless to say, this lasted me at least two meals, and I still had enough rice left over to make a small portion of fried rice at home. The salt+scallion dipping oil that comes with it is the finishing touch to give you that perfect traditional flavor. Once of the best parts about working in the neighborhood was all the awesome food. And Ton Kiang was the pinnacle. Friendly, good food, no pretense, nothing fancy, and well-made, and a delight to eat. I'd got there probably more than anywhere else over the 13 years I worked in the area. This is my go to stop for chinese bbq in chinatown! I typically get a combo meal which you can choose 2 types of meat. I usually go with the char siu, oil chicken, or crispy belly and all of them are delicious! I also recently tried the tomato with beef over rice and this is my new favorite dish! Its like an elevated version of tomato egg plus beef but the meat is so tender and the rice just soaks up all the sauce and its so flavorful. The staff are super nice and service it really quick. This has been my go to place for Cantonese bbq for a while. They've got all the standard fare: roast duck, barbecue pork, roast pork, chicken. I usually get a 2 meat combo with duck and bbq pork or duck and roast pork. The duck is my favorite wherever I go, and they season it just right here. Good flavor and not overly salted (just remember to ask for plum sauce, they don't always include it automatically). The barbecue pork is well seasoned, love it when they include the end pieces that have the most glaze on them. Roast pork has never disappointed either, with a nice crispy skin and both lean and fatty meat with each bite. They give a good amount of meat, on a generous bed of rice with some cabbage as well. I've been coming here for a few months from recommendation from my coworkers and has become one of my favorite lunch spots. I've been working through their menu and everything always hits the spot. Working in the area, it's hard finding healthier lunch options with good amount of vegetables but this restaurant always throws in an assortment of veggies. I'm not sure if I came on a bad day, but based on a subpar first impression, I would not recommend Ton Kiang nor would I come back. I ordered roast pork with rice, BBQ pork with rice, and garlic string beans. When I came to pick up my order, it was very unclear what was going on at the restaurant. There was one guy loudly speaking Cantonese to the cashier, then there was another couple who was waiting to place their order, and then there was me. The couple managed to place their order with a lady that randomly came out to take their order then disappeared. I waited and waited behind them to pay for my order. After a long wait, I asked the couple in front of me if they were waiting to pay, and they told me that they were just waiting for their order and instructed me to move ahead of them to pay, so I did just that. Anyway, as far as the food goes, it was very underwhelming. The portions of meat were very small compared to the generous portion of rice that was given. There was like 4x more rice than meat. The meat seemed like an afterthought, the way there was such a limited amount sprinkled haphazardly across the bed of rice. The roast pork was just okay because the skin wasn't very crispy. The BBQ pork was very uneven. Some pieces were well flavored while other pieces were bland. The garlic string beans were bland and soggy. Aside from all this, as I was waiting for my turn to pay in the restaurant, I watched a cockroach crawl across the wall. I got home opened the box and the amount of duck given was definitely not the double amount I asked for. Saturday at 1 P.M. and they were already sold out of so many choices. This is a limited review. I've bought only one thing from them for many, many years - Joong, aka 粽, aka Rice Dumpling, aka Chinese Tamale. Decades ago when I moved to the Seattle area, Ton Kiang is the first location where I found the very homey, very legit and authentic Cantonese Joong. (In the Seattle area, the other commonly available types are Taiwanese and Shanghainese ones.) They sell two varieties, differentiated by having egg yolk and peanuts (version 1), or not (version 2). My photo of the inside is of version 2 (without egg yolk and peanuts) but the Chinese mushroom and the dried shrimps are hidden. Decades later, their Cantonese Joong is still better than any other place in the entire Seattle area. I vouch for that! The cost is very low; it's the best deal. Some quick comments about the restaurant itself. It's a small outfit with their primary business on the Chinese BBQ itself - take-outs and with rice lunch box. They do have a normal menu, but tends to be less popular. Their clientele is predominately local Chinese. They speak English perfectly fine ; do not be intimated. Their BBQ is also lower cost than most other places, possibly the lowest in all of ID. read more
