Really bad experience yesterday. We were in town for a funeral and walked in with no one at the hostess station to seat us, then we ordered flavored tea which tasted like day old dish water. My hummus was meh and late. The poor waitress was trying but worse the chef, Michael. My friends order was wrong and when my friend sent it back he simply threw some noodles over here protein. It looked very unappetizing. Good lord just make the bowl over right? I have worked in the food and hospitality , I know what quality customer service looks like. Later, he came over and offered to take it off our ticket. Then, much later into the conversation he agreed to make the whole dish over again. WTF. Additionally, we saw an African American couple be totally ignored and walked out upset. They didn't have enough staff to handle the customers. But the waitress and chef seemed very overwhelmed. Never trust a Fart after eating at Ton's Mongolian Grill. One of the Worst meals I have ever had. When you walk in no ventilation and air conditioning must not have been working. Frankly the first restaurant of this type that I have seen, and it has set a high bar. Go through the line, pick out the food you will eat, mix a sauce, and then give it to the cooks. They put it on a big flat round grill and cook it in front of you. Take it back to your table and enjoy it. Always good, but always a little different because you may choose a different mix. The only possible negative is that they cook seven at a time, so if you are in a group you may get your food at a different time than the others, but sometimes that adds to the charm. They close at 9:30 PM. I arrived at 9:10 PM to order two to-go meals. They refused to serve me stating the cook had just cleaned off the grill and I was "one minute too late." These we're going to be to-go orders, therefore I would not be sitting in their restaurant to eat, which there were still plenty of people sitting being tended to by servers as I was speaking to the man at the register. This place has some seriously good food. The selection of veggies is great in my opnion. They cook the food in front of you while you wait. I have been going here for years and they have never upgraded their interior decor or got any new furniture. It seems slightly dirty inside just because it is so old. The waitresses are so sweet and always offer complimentary ice cream at the end. They are quick here so you can get in and out on your lunch hour if you work in the area. Tons is a true gem of Grand Prairie, I honesty get happy whenever I come home cause I know I get to eat here. There menu is like nothing I've ever seen with endless variety that YOU get to create. If done correctly it's a great place for a health conscience person although I do see a far sure a people who simply pig out, to each there own. Ton's follows the basic formula of any Mongolian BBQ--you get some bowls, there's a buffet of raw meat, vegetables and sauces, you fill these bowls up with food, and then some guys cook them in front of you, adding things like eggs, rice, and sesame seeds if you so desire. The options generally include everything that you would expect to find in Asian cuisine--tofu, noodles, veggies, nuts, an assortment of meat. But the big win here is that this place (which also has an Arlington location) is cheaper than the big chains, such as Genghis Grill. Plus, they have soft serve. read more

My family and I have been coming to this location since they opened and it's exactly the same as it was back then... meaning: the place still has the original carpet, tables and chairs, "artwork," and decor. Although the paint has been "refreshed," it looks home-done and not very well. However, the staff and food are still fantastic!! So... my family took me there for Father's Day and I don't plan on going back. Food was decent but service was lousy. I had to chase down the waitress multiple time to get drinks and other things. I just can't eat here. The first visit, i couldn't for the life of me get anyone to help with combo suggestions. I would have liked to sample the flavorings before commiting to soaking my meat and veggies with a random oil. I also don't like that they are all oils and no dry spice optiins like at Ghengis Grill. My husband and I are new to Texas. We loved the Mongolian near our home in California. Friends referred us to Tons. From the momemt we entered I was less than thrilled with dirty cafeteria style seating. However, I made my way to the plates. I eat very little so in an effort to stay healthy my husband and I share alot. I had them wok my meal and asked for a soda. As I prepared a small plate for my husband I was told no. So I said I will take my meal to go. Again I was told no. What? No I cannot take my food home? Oh wait at $17.00 my crummy meal is quite overpriced compare to highscale $8.99 in Westlake Village. She will let me take it for $5.00 more. Forget it....count me out for good, POOR SERVICES, FOOD AND PRICES. And the little bit I ate gave me terrible cramps. I am not saying that to be mean spirited. Let's just get this out of the way now. There is nothing gourmet about this place. It's in an area of Grand Prairie that has been around for as long as I can remember. It's in the same shopping center as Movies 16 and Albertson, both of which I don't know how they're still running. There is nothing fancy about this area, but it will always be relatively busy because it is a staple of GP. And that's what Ton's is in GP. A staple. You don't get too many people on the south side that haven't eaten there, and definitely shouldn't find someone who hasn't heard of it. With all of this being said, if you're expecting Genghis Grill when you walk in, I'll say it now, GET OUT OF TOWN. This is not Ghengis Grill, but more so the comfort version of it. (And we Southern folk love comfort food.) The place is very simple. No decorations, no frill. You'll be seated by a nice server, she'll take your drink orders and ask you what type of soup you'd like, egg drop or hot and sour. If you want a separate bowl of white rice, you ask for it now. The soups are mediocre. I used to like the egg drop more, but I think the hot and sour has grown on me. Once you mosey on over to the buffet line, grab your tray and a bowl or two. (Dustin D. always grabs two bowls and piles it on, ultimately regretting it every single time.) I grab one bowl and I take it easy. It's all you eat, after all, and I love my seconds. You really don't have to put on all the spaghetti noodles you possibly can, it's a lot more than it looks. Like the sign says, it's All You Can Eat not All You Can Waste! They have a good array of meats including chicken, pork, beef, sausage, shrimp, fish, and imitation crab, I believe. They also have tofu down the line. The meat is frozen, get over it. I prefer this because they slice it thin, and it doesn't overtake my meal. Throw your veggies on top, add some noodles, and hit the sauce bar. These sauces are not pre-mixed. I told you, if you expect Ghengis Grill, get out. A lot of them are diluted, which trust me, that's good for you. The Hot, Med, Mild chart up top means nothing to me. I put in what I like, they cook it with soy sauce anyways, so honestly, a lot of it comes out tasting very, very similar. Am I okay with this? ABSOLUTELY. When I give my food to the cooks, I ask for an egg and skip on the sesame seed. (Second time around, I usually get rice instead of noodles.) I sit down. I feast. I do it again. And I end it with a complimentary soft serve ice cream and my day is complete. The service is good. The place is clean, which I have never had an issue with. And as long as you know what you're getting into, the food is good. They have regulars for a reason. They have a special on Wed (maybe Monday as well, Mimi T. can confirm.) for two dinners for $14-15. Tip the server. Tip the cooks. Grab a fortune cookie. And don't skip the check. Everytime me and my boyfriend come to Grand Prairie our first stop is this place! yes, it is out-dated and the bathrooms need a good deep clean. But the staff is VERY friendly and attentive. I have been going to Ton's for 7+ years now. I love it! There in another Ton's in Arlington, that is the same as this one in GP. (there is also one in Mansfield that is not affiliated with this place). The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual. During lunch it is usually not overly crowded, dinner is usually a bit busier. The staff is always very nice and once you have visited frequently enough they get to recognize you which is always nice. As you can gather from the other reviews, you choose your meats, veggies and sauces. I have been going for so long and have learned what I like, you get more adventurous after a while. I never mix my sauces according to the chart (other than not adding more than one spoonful of hot oil; it WILL cause flames). I tend to think the food is most flavorful when they have had a busy day! If you are a very picky eater, I would not suggest this place. Your food will end up with pieces from your grill-neighbor's; I have no problem just picking those stray pieces out. I have been to Genghis and I must say, I prefer Ton's any day! In my opinion, the two are incomparable, just very different flavors. So years back I used to have a group that would meet here about once a month post our local gathering. It was really my first experience with mongolian grills. That said Ton's became the bar that I measure most other mongolian grills against. The decor is simple, with no real embellishments. Instead the giant grill sits front and center as you enter the building. Staff is quick to grab you, get you sat, and take a drink/soup order. They then direct you to the nearby bar to start your dish. The options are pretty standard as far as mongolian grills go, but they mix up as well as any other place. I usually end up with a bowl of meat and one of veggies by the time I make it to the grill. That said, even being a good distance away you can feel the heat coming off of it while you are waiting for it to cook. While you sit down and eat, the staff is unobtrusive. They really only stop by to refill drinks, and there is not much chit chatting with them as you dine. Of course being a grill I usually go back for a smaller round of second dishes before finishing my meal with a small scoop of softserve. Overall, I love Ton's, and usually stop in a few times a month to get my grill fix. read more

All hail Ton's!! "See you tomorrow!" they always exclaim as you walk out...and it's pretty much true. I went to DBU just down the road from this place. Ton's for a DBU student is what Freebird's is (or was) to an A&M student. It's one of these places where you're not sure if there are any Mongolian workers there at all, and there is instrumental MUZAK versions of 70s/80s pop songs on the speakers, and a neon blue squiggly lining the perimeter of the dining room, and those are factors that add to it's ironic awesomeness. At lunch it's 5.95 for an all-you-can-eat buffet. You walk up to the line, grab two bowls, put your meats in one and your veggies in another. Then comes the sauces. You mix your sauces yourself and my advice is just to put two of everything on both bowls. You do NOT want to get behind a rookie who very slowly and confused looks at the chart above the sauces to decide how they are going to mix theirs. You then take your bowls to the giant wok where they cook your food in front of you and you can ask them to add an egg to it if you wish. After they will ask if you want sesame seeds on it. Say yes! They give you free soft-serve ice cream at the conclusion of the meal. It's such an excellent place, now that I'm away from Grand Prairie and in downtown, I make the drive from downtown Dallas at least once a month, and my friends who I meet are making drives from all over the Metroplex. Hmmmm where do I start. I'm sort of conflicted on this place. On one side I really enjoy the food here because for one it tastes good and it's an all you can eat Mongolia BBQ. On the other side, the place is dated, could use some cleaning up, and I'm pretty sure there has to be some sort of health code violations. In this case, beyond my better judgement I'm gonna have to say this place is a place I would come back to just because the food is addicting lol. Ton's is amazing. Sure, their food is not five-star restaurant material, but it is delicious, you get to pick your ingredients and sauces (definitely use multiple sauces) and you get soft-serve ice cream after your meal. You can also order soup, rice, or tortillas with your meal for free or a slight charge. You don't have to, though, because trips down the buffet table are unlimited and you can cram a LOT of food into those two bowls. Ton's always used to be crowded when I was in high school and went there but lately I haven't had to wait in line at all. Lunch is the best deal and dinner on a weeknight is when the place is the least busy. Sometimes in the old days the line at the grill would stretch out all the way to the door. Ton's is a staple for me and my friends---whenever one of them comes to visit from out of town we immediately think to meet up at Ton's, and my boyfriend and I go there about once a month. I've been to A few mongolian grills. There's a reason why I've only been to very few and that's because I found the holy Grail of all Mongolian food. This was one of the very first places I got to eat at here in the DFW and I was not sorry I did. Are used to go to a place that's been long forgotten in Arizona called hot wok café. it was the absolute best Mongolian food I have ever had and it was so popular. To this day nobody knows why this establishment has closedown that turned into a restaurant not even worth mentioning. I had only tried very few other Mongolian Grill's and they just were not the same. YCs in the Phoenix metroplex area came the closest until I moved to Texas and discovered Tons. I will be the first to admit that the main reason why I rated it five stars is because this place I go to very often and it never fails me. I have enjoyed the food every single time I have visited this place in the customer service is excellent as well. It's a very good price for a very good food and you basically get to pick out what you want to eat. The only complaint I have about this place is that it looks a little bit rundown. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's dirty but it's a very old and there has not been any refurbishing whatsoever. Believe me when I say that's a small complaint compared to how great the food is and you can serve yourself as much as you want and go up for seconds if you choose to. That's my kind of eating establishment if you ask me. If you haven't tried Mongolian food believe me this is your kind of place so please enjoy and you will want the second serving. read more

My husband and I have been eating at Ton's since 2001 and the food is still as delicious as the first time. The management is the same friendly people as before, still greet you with a friendly smile. You choose your ingredients at the bar and the chef cooks your items on the hot grill. You can add rice or eggs to your food once at the grill, just tell the chefs. At the table you will find a bowl of rice and a cup of soup(egg drop or wonton). As I eat, I try not to look around me. The restaurant is extremely dirty. The walls, counters, decorations, chairs, floors, restrooms look they haven't been wiped down or sanitized in years. The employees had a tv at the back of the restaurant and would watch tv in between serving customers. This was unprofessional. It seems like I always get a stomach ache after eating at tons. Supersuper cheap, tasty and unlimited portions (they gave each of us two bowls, but one was enough for me-- try to not waste! You can't take it home anyway), and yummy vanilla soft-serve. Genghis Grill is more expensive than I would like, so this was an awesome (and tasty) alternative. The staff could tell we were clueless and showed us how to get it done (like Will V. said, grab bowls and a tray, and throw in what you want grilled-- having "buffet" in the name threw us off, but it's not a Chinese buffet), then followed up to be sure our dishes were to our liking. Very friendly. Lots of fresh veggies (which you can throw on afterward if you'd like them raw) and seasoning options, five or so different meats, and posted "recipes" for creating your sauce. I wish there were more variety in sauces beyond mild, medium and hot, but it was fun mixing them myself. A scoop of this, half a scoop of that, less salt or soy if you're not into that. Like a fun, tasty chemistry experiment (you may or may not be able to tell that I rarely cook anything that doesn't come in a box). They also have soy sauce, sriacha sauce, and a few other condiments on the table for you. Another fun aspect is that they make the grill the centerpiece of the restaurant, so that's the first thing you see when you walk in.
