Not overly impressed, the atmosphere was great. And I'm sure a dine in experience would be much more appealing. However ordered a carryout and unfortunately two of the three hot dogs were cold and the chili on all three were cold. It was pretty busy therefore they may have just added a new batch of chili and dogs and didn't allow them time to get warm. As it only took me a few minutes to get my carry out. What a great place to visit and stop and have either lunch or dinner. I had the original hotdog and the stuffed cabbage plate it was so tasty. I paired it with a Paco's IPA and boy did it complement the delicious dinner that I had. If you're ever in the Toledo area I suggest you come to this establishment. There are signed hotdog rolls from over 100 different celebrities and five different presidents who have eaten here. As the other reviewer's have mentioned it became famous from when Klinger ( Jamie Karr)who is a Toledo native mentioned it on five different episodes of mash. Throughout the family-owned era, Tony Packo made sure that the Hungarian food had maintained its delicious integrity. Having grown up with my Hungarian immigrant grandparents, and having visited in Hungary with our relatives, I "know" good Hungarian cuisine. Chicken Praprikas was solid and a carb bomb. Excellent Hungarian comfort food. I don't know what the carbs were, but it was good. The chicken pieces were inconsistent, one was fork tender, but the other took a little more work to cut up. The price was reasonable for a lunch dish, ~$8. Yes, the original local to the world famous Tony Packos (world famous thanks to Jamie Farr/Klinger and MASH). Sliced kielbasa smothered in Packos chili. Deep fried pickles. I live north of Detroit so this is about 80 miles one way---and we make the drive several times a year. The deco is American Bar with autographed hot dog buns seal in plastic (Bill Clinton, the Temptations, Jamie Farr and hundreds,if not thousands, more). Full bar, Yeungling Lager on tap-America's oldest brewery (can't get this in Michigan either). Great place, our server Alyssa was outstanding as well. read more

This iconic Toledo hit spot is falling on hard times. We have come here many times over the years and I love bringing out of town friends for their TP introduction. Last night was very disappointing. First, the place is very shoddy. The furniture has long outlived it's usefulness. The tablecloths are 20 years old based on the faded colors and condition. I specifically told one of my guests about the great German Potato salad. When we ordered we were told they out 'out' of potato salad. Then the server said we've been out of it since August! At this point, you aren't out of it, you've just stop making it. I ordered the limited time only fried perch. I asked for Malt Vinegar. Again, 'we are out of it. We're out of everything." Incredibly overrated tourist trap in Toledo. We enjoyed looking at the veritable who's who of celebrities from the early 80s who had signed hot dog buns. Ok so most people from Toledo know of this place or have some fancy tradition that brings the family here when they are in town. The point that I will quickly get to is that this place rocks. The original location of Tony Packo's is like going to Disney world for the first time (or to those in the area Cedar Point). When you walk in you are greeted with everything Toledo crammed on a wall so they could save money on not painting. As you venture further in you experience the holy grail of hot dog buns. You think I'm joking? I kid you not every famous person who has been to Toledo has mad it to Tony Packo's to sign a bun. As this place wasn't nostalgic enough the show M.A.S.H. referenced Tony Packo's on occasion. Ok enough about that let's get on with the food! Well I am one for eating a well portioned meal, but yeah that goes out the clutter filled window at this place. So on my most recent trip I ordered The Packo's Feast, a little bit heaven with a side of everything else. So what's in the feast? I'm glad you asked a cup of chili that I ordered with cheese and onion pared with a bowl of oyster crackers. A half slice of a world famous hot dog with yellow mustard, hot dog sauce, onions and cheese. So history has it that the hot dog was cut in half in an effort to not raise the prices back in Packo's younger years. Which I'm glad they did as it is more than plenty. Also this meal included a stuffed cabbage roll that was more than tender and filled with flavor. Did I mention these items are garnished with a side of there homemade pickles. My wife has wanted to go here for years so we decided to take a little day trip from Columbus to Toledo. The place was packed but our waitress to little time coming over to get our order. I've never watched M*A*S*H before - I only came to Tony Packo's because my friend, who has family in Toledo, recommended it. Fun place to eat, though, with how much memorabilia they have here! I opted for the Packo's Feast to try a little bit of everything: soup, dog, roll. Instead of the chili, I had the chicken and dumplings - not quite how the South does it, but a tasty appetizer. The Packo's dog was tasty - you can't miss out on a chili dog when you're in Ohio! Also the reason why I skipped out on the chili as my soup, but I wish I had ordered the chili instead... Finally, the cabbage roll: not sure what to expect, but the filling was tender, the cabbage sufficiently steamed. A very filling meal and quite affordable as well! We came during a trip as it's on the way home. One of the better coney dog places, but not as good as I expected. Here is a famous and legendary place. They have signatures signed on the bun from all sorts of famous, presidents, astronaut, etc. We service is good, she automatically refilled all our drinks without being asked. Causal place to eat, and they don't mind us get lot as we played games while waiting. The chili dog is good. But most of the people on our table think the pickle taste weird. True Toledo. If you have not been you need to go. I am not a fan of the chili topping in here on the dogs, I am too Detroit and consider anything other than Detroit coney sauce an abomination. The dogs are quality though, snappy which I need, I also dig the size and the spice. The chili is nice on its own in a bowl, I also like the chicken chili. I would skip both though and get the Hungarian vegetable soup with dumplings. MMMMM You have to get a scoop of pickles and peppers. The regular are good but I freaking love the sweet hot version. The regular are best as the fried pickle appetizer, evil but who could resist. I also like the hot German style potato salad but I dig vinegar, if you don't you won't love it. I've been coming here since I was a kid and lived in Toledo. Lately I get here every few years, but every summer I get dogs and sauce from the Anderson's in Columbus and grill them up. It's not the same, though. Neither are the strip mall Packo's locations. You need to get here and soak up the atmosphere, and have some good dogs. The chili dogs are the star, and are very good. The meat is more like a smoked sausage, though they have "Front Street Franks" too, which are like good hot dogs. Anyway, get a chili dog or two. The cabbage rolls are also really good, and of course the chili. Walk around a bit and look at the (now plastic) hot dog buns that are signed by celebrities. Check out the gift shop for food, and wacky gifts, and wacky food (I tried the sweet hot popcorn, and the chili cheese popcorn. Do not do this.) I think I've had everything here; what stands out besides the dogs and cabbage rolls are the paprikash dumplings. Also fried pickles if you like those. Service is "cafeteria style" for lunch, sitdown ordering after that. Service is generally good, though my most recent visit it was a bit cold and unfriendly (still fast.) Yep, like the four stars say, I'm a fan. I can trace stopping in at Packo's Front & Consaul corner back to '65 or so. Dad took Saturday drives from Lorain OH to Windsor, ONT for Canadian beer (in '65 "imported" beer meant go to Canada and buy it yerowndamnself) and Packo's was the dinner stop on the way home. At that time it had grown up a little bit from a neighborhood bar/restaurant for the local blue collar crowd and guys working the Great Lakes freighters. Dad always had the hot roast beef (rye & gravy) and German potato salad, mom the stuffed cabbage or chicken paprikas and dumplings (spatzle really, but whats in a name, its flour, water & egg dough, sometimes seasoned sometimes not, boiled in water or broth) and the kids all had dogs (a seasoned smoked beef and pork sausage) with sauerkraut, mustard and onions (cheese wasn't the IN thing yet). Pickles and hot peppers all around...again, nobody heard of frying the things! Then when a couple of us reached college at BGSU in the mid 70's and we hit 21, this was our cheap date out as long as our dates liked this kind of fare. By then the weekend draw was the Cakewalkin Jass Band. Trad jazz (Dixieland) kept the joint jump'en and stand-in-line packed (they don't play Packo's anymore but are still at it in T-town). By this time Burt Reynolds' signed bun was not quite a year old and Jamie Farr's MASH episode was still in some writers head. Enough about memory lane because I live 400 miles away from that street. But, now that me and one of my Tony Packo's college dates are married going on 36 years, with our own out-of-college-age kids, we still stop in whenever we're close to the Glass City. Maybe a little nostalgia sets in, but our adult sensibilities sometimes order the stuffed cabbage and chix paprikas, and sometimes the hot roast beef and german potato salad and sometimes the hungarian dogs...and now it's beer ALL around! I'd recommend looking for a dinnertime crowd. Maybe even a stand-in-line night. You see it's when the place is packed and the order counter is sling'en, and the barman is tend'en, and the patrons are elbow to elbow tell'en each other where they're from and where they're going, THAT is when it's best for not only some fine east Toledo Hungarian food, but most importantly for a fine ol time! read more

For the out of towners... It's conceivable that you will leave here scratching your head wondering what that was all about. I haven't lived in NW Ohio for over 10 years now but will still go out of my way for the familiar flavors and memories that accompany. The nostalgia factor here is pretty high for current and past residents (myself included) and it's a comfortable setting to have some decent food, a couple of beers, etc. I recommend either two Packo's dogs with everything and a side of German potato salad or kraut. Stuffed cabbage is good also. Combo platter works too. Some of my most vivid memories of coming to Packo's were before a Toledo Goaldiggers hockey game, trying to get a seat somewhere near the front when the Cakewalkin' Jass Band was playing, my Dad giving me a few bucks to go tip the band, etc. This nostalgia will all be lost on the cold, dispassionate Yelp reviews which (deservedly) are based on food and service since there isn't a point of reference for a lot of reviewers...the place is vastly different than what it was in the early 80s. Call me sentimental...that's fine. Personally I think Packo's heyday has long past (M*A*S*H off air for 30+ years now!) and your opinion could likely reflect that the decor, etc. looks worn and dated. Either way...if you are reading this and planning to go, enjoy the retro decor, order up some dogs and brew, and have a good conversation and laughs with friends or family. Better still...do it before catching a local event. It is that kind of place. Also the experience during the the day is much different than evenings. You order at the counter and seat yourself and the nice woman taking orders screeches them to the serving line...great entertainment. Tony's is a historic cool little local place in Toledo. Historic, as it has been around forever and cool because a ton of famous people have visited this place. The original and best location can be found right off the main highway near downtown Toledo. If you ever watched the television show M*A*S*H*, then you probably have heard of this place. Atmosphere - Old, dark, brick, wood, friendly...BUNS ON THE WALL!! Food - I went with the traditional Hungarian Sausage/ Hot Dog, which came with a slathering of spicy chili and onions. I also ordered a side of chili and a piece of the homemade apple strudel. The dog was delicious. It had a great spicy bite. The chili on both the dog and in the bowl, while having the texture of chili from a can, was very tasty. I think the spices make the food at this place rock. The strudel, while promising, was a little burnt on the bottom and thus disappointing. I would definitely give it another go. Service - While this place has a nice table and chair setup, the process is cafeteria style. The people serving you appear to be longtime employees, because they banter playfully with some patrons as they arrived. Price - A little pricey for a hotdog, but hey this place is a tourist trap. For many years I've wanted to stop in at Tony Packo's while driving between Nashville and Detroit (or on the return trip back home). Today the stars aligned and we made it in. I don't recall if I first heard about it because of Yelp or because of MASH, but either way it's a location with a long history and worth a visit. We seemed to have arrived at just the right time, because there was no line at all. The only wait was for my fries, which appeared within only a few minutes. As far as Chili Dogs go, this was certainly a good one. Having recently eaten at Pinks and been somewhat disappointed, it was nice to have a Hot Dog place actually deliver. Additionally the Pickles and Peppers was a nice unique addition to the experience. There is certainly a tourist vibe now with the autographed Hot Dog Buns, but that adds to the fun. My wife and I have a compulsion when it comes to Tony Packo's. We are incapable of taking a road trip (from our hometown of Detroit) through Northeast Toledo that does not involve stopping here either on our way to our destination or on our way home. It's kind of a touristy "must" for the greater Toledo area, featured on numerous Food Network shows and such. Thing is, the food is actually pretty good. The classic Hungarian sausages topped with chili are what made this place famous. And rightly so, they are great. They are no Lafayette coney dogs but damn it if they ain't delicious all the same. However don't stop there, it is absolutely worth branching out and exploring the menu here. I am a staunch advocate for their hot roast beef plate. It is so so so so good. And my wife loves their "Nachos" (which are tortilla chips with chili and cheese). The chicken chili is also very good. As are any number of other items we've tried, which have ranged from ok to good to great. Never had anything here I truly didn't like, to be honest. It's definitely worth stopping here a few times before reserving judgement. Try a few different things off the menu, order some drinks from their full bar, and enjoy the kitschy ambiance of the place.
