Tony Packo's is highly overrated, in my humble opinion. In fact, I'm slightly embarrassed to have suggested checking out the place when a friend had recently visited, since I could have thought of a dozen other (better) eateries in the vicinity. To put it nicely, Tony Packo's is a tourist trap. Then again, if you're touring the area, perhaps you deserved to be suckered into such a trap. To start, the food was cold from the start -- a strong indicator that the rest of the meal can't be all that stellar. The fried pickles, I'll admit, were delicious. While I didn't care much for the ranch, I loved dipping them in the accompanying two red sauces. Next up was a generous Hungarian chili dog, which tasted like a regular coney if you ask me, which came with a side of ho-hum paprikas dumplings. Service is slightly strange, as folks order from the same counter not mattering if you're eating in or taking it to go. The catch is that since nearly everything has been pre-prepared, the food is ready in five minutes, tops. So, if pre-prepared artery-clogging chili dog is your cup of tea, by all means, head on over to Tony Packo's. Some, like myself, will settle for a one-time gig. read more

I have been to all of the Packo's locations...and I still don't know how they do it....How can they each deliver those tender, juicy dogs served with just the right amount of tangy sauce....How do they do it? If you haven't tried a 'coney dog' from Packo's....You haven't had a coney dog...! My favorite dish in the world...is the stuffed cabbage. It is a special secret recipe from the ancient world. LOL seriously...Get the platter. A sausage dog, Stuffed cabbage and the mashed taters...cover it all with the tomatoe sauce...that is the great secret, my friends...the sauce! So I first started coming here as a die-hard MASH fan about 20 years ago. Try to stop in when driving to Chicago or Michigan from Cleveland. Had not been by for a few years. Great to say nothing has changed. The dogs are still good, the stuffed cabbage is good. The french fried pickles are THE BEST anywhere. Friendly service, generous portion size, good value. Simply put, Packo's is a Toledo staple. It's certainly our most signature eatery. It's also the most unique coney-type dog you'll have. If you're in town, it's a right of passage to grab a Packo's dog and gawk at the celebrity signed buns on the wall. If you've never been, do yourself a favor and visit the original east side location. All of the food at Packo's is actually quite great. The signature chili and dog sauce are musts, as are the unique pickles and fried pickle appetizer. If you're real hungry, the chicken paprikas is a delight, I love the savory sauce and tender chicken heaped over Hungarian dumplings! The stuffed cabbage is also excellent. The Hungarian chili mac is a total original, dog sauce piled over dumplings instead of noodles. You really can't go wrong. What a great place!!! Was in Toledo with my wife on business and found out we were three minutes from the original Tony Packo's. Years of M*A*S*H made a visit mandatory. I did not expect much given the fame the show must have brought it but had to go. It was a very cold, very snow Wednesday around 11:45. The place was just beginning to fill. Except for us, everyone seemed local and very at home. Service was cafeteria style but quick and friendly. No rushing. My wife ordered the Southern Slaw dog (she does not do spicy). I had the Hungarian original (what else?!?!) She had warm German potato salad. I had dumplings with gravy paprikas. My dog was of very high quality. Good beef. Slightly smoked, it seemed. Very flavorful and very much enjoyed. My wife's was equally as good and the slaw perfect. Her potato salad was excellent. A bit on the sweet side but it did not seem to detract. My dumplings (spaetzel) were a bit overcooked but still toothsome. The gravy was as it should be, a bit bland but still hearty. We watched others eating and all looked happy and the food disappeared. We were surprised by the range of the menu. It is Hungarian-style, down-home soul food. Nothing pretentious. Everything satisfying. You know how when you want to try someplace but at the same time don't want to because you will be disappointed and it may be better not to try it and still have intimations of what it should be like rather than have those hopes dashed? I have a few Detroit vs. Toledo food bets with my BF, he's from Detroit. Tony Packos beats the Detroit Coney for the following reasons; Tony's has a better atmosphere than Leo's or any Coney place that I have ever been to, Tony's has a full bar, their hot dog sauce is spicier, and the buns are fresh.. not steamed and wet like the Coney. I will advise against the German potato salad, which very well may have been authentic but I was hoping for the cold, mayonaisy variety.. this one was hot with a thick, sour, snot-like sauce. Eww. We went to the gift shop after we ate to get some hot dog sauce to go. My boyfriend asked the girl at the register what the difference was between their hot dog sauce and the chili, and she actually said, "Well, the chili is like- it's like soup." Wow. If you are famous for two things, one would think that the staff would be experts on them. Sadly this is not the most idiotic thing we have ever heard in a restaurant- once, we asked a server at Morretti's in a Chicago suburb how the grilled calamari was prepared and she said, "it's white and there's no breading on it". I was a newbie going here for my first time and was impressed. We got the fried pickles for an appetizer. They were a little bit too spicy for my taste but liked that they came with three sauce choices. Not being a chili fan I got assistance from my table mates and waitress to figure out the proper combo to order. I ended up ordering the TP Hot Dog and stuffed cabbage. It was really fun to check out an old classic like Tony Packo's, I just don't know that the food was something I'd go back to if I had a choice. Definitely a once-in-a-while meal with the heavy chili dog and dumplings on the side. The chili was flavorful and the dog was good, it was just heavy on the stomach. Plus the dumplings were a bit flavorless, though I did appreciate how comforting they were. I tried the fried pickels which were pretty delicious. Came here with friends after visiting the zoo. Our first visit. Son ordered 2 american dogs with chili sauce. He loved them. I ordered stuffed cabbage and dumplings. Pretty yummy. Very dense. ALmost like a sausage with a cabbage casing. The dumplings were like little pillows they were so light. Not a huge fan of the pickles, but you can't love everything. Super friendly waitress.. Manager came around to check on us. Will gladly come back whenever we go to the Toledo Zoo again. Side note: I'd not heard of this place when our friend suggested it....at least I didn't think so. I love this place, great memories of my grandfather coming in town off the ship's and taking him to dinner, this was his fave place to go! My Mother and I loved the Hungarian hamburger, they no longer sell it on the menu, they said it's only certain times, I was so disappointed. This was a total Yelp find while en route from Cedar Point to Detroit. I'm glad we stopped! This is the original of 5 locations, I was told it has been here for 86 years. Their claim to fame (aside from the food) is being mentioned several times on the TV show M.A.S.H. We walked up to the counter as newbies and I felt the pressure to order quickly. I ended up getting their classic dog with onions, chili and cheese. I chose hot German potato salad as my side and it was delicious! I tried the mac and cheese my kids got and it was just ok. Beware the pickles! They looked like innocent bread and butter but were SPICY. (I'm a wimp so gave them to hubby who happily ate them)The cherry strudel was microwaved then topped with ice cream and whipped cream. It was yummy too! I browsed the gift shop full of Packo paraphernalia and chatted with a friendly salesman who was very proud of the place. I really liked the sides (Mac & Cheese, warm German potato salad, cucumber salad, dumplings with gravy) and the soup (Hungarian Vegetable, Chicken & Dumpling, Chicken Chili). After a 14 hour day of driving, we got to Tony Packo's. No sense of order in the line at the hostess stand. Casual attitude from hostess like, you guys wanna eat? Um, yes. Told it would be about 10 minutes, went to the bar to get a drink. For five minutes, no bartender in sight. When she arrived, she seemed to studiously ignore us, even when we tried to get her attention (ps, there were three other people sitting at the bar). After another five minutes, I started looking up other places to eat. But then we were seated. Our server was sweet, but didn't know anything about the beer or shine selections- like, not if they had chardonnay, a common house white. Food: the fried pickles were under-done, dough-y, and a bit... Tough? We didn't finish a half order. Soup: average, but probably the best thing we had. Hot dogs: average, and yes, you should advertise that this is one dog in two buns. Dumplings: served cold. To echo a previous review, this place seems popular on reputation alone. My brother and I used to have contests on how many hamburgers and hot dogs we could eat at one visit.Our record was three apiece.I was told they were going to bring back the hamburgers this fall.If this happens I will be making a special trip to Toledo to have several of the best burgers I have ever eaten. Klinger from MASH made Tony Packo's, and thus Toledo, famous by longing for one of Packo's spicy hot dogs. Jamie Farr is still the ultimate Toledo Celebrity, and Tony Packo's may be the only thing most people know about Toledo. Well, they're an acquired taste. I find the spicy hot dogs too bitter and a little tough, and I personally don't even call what they serve chili. They pack their own pickled peppers, too.
