I've been coming here since last year (2021), and this by far is one of my favorite restaurants. The service (especially in the morning) is absolutely great, and I enjoy talking with the servers--namely Sisi and Yoyo. The Hong Kong style Lemon Tea is absolutely amazing and refreshing, and I also like to get the Baked Pork Chop Rice, which is really good and one of my favorites. We went there for dinner on Nov 20 night. We are a group of 4 adults and 4 kids. They provided us the menus after being seated. There was only one lady behind counter. She was busy answering the phone calls because it's around 6 pm and must be busy. I raised my hands twice to that lady and asked her to come and take the order. She told me she will. After 15 mins waiting, the kids are very hungry and kept asking when can we have the food. I walked over to the counter and asked the lady why she still don't come and the kids are very hungry. Living in SF in the past I was spoiled with all the HK cafes I could go to and I didn't realize how spoiled I was until I moved back south. I had Top Cafe bookmarked for a long time but never got around to eating here until my bf and I were in the area one evening after volleyball and we decided to have dinner here. Their service is very fast-pace and they have a good sized menu selection so be prepared with what you want to order. I got the wonton noodle soup and my bf got the eel rice plate (I'm not sure what the actual name of the dish was). Wonton noodle soup was nothing out of the ordinary, but it was a cold evening so it definitely warmed me up and satisfied my noodle soup craving. My BF's dish was interesting because the grave on top of the eel and rice was delicious but we couldn't pin point exactly what the spice was that we were tasting. The portion of eel to rice ration was a little off, but in this economy everything is a little off. I've eaten here a lot throughout the years. If you've got crazy work schedules, this is a good place to go because the are always open late. Which is mostly when I visit. The food here is mostly good, though they have gotten my order wrong a couple of times (such as I request no onions, but they put the onions... then again, I AM a really picky eater). I have to however say that if you speak to them in Chinese, the service seems to be a tad better. I almost always know what I want, so I rarely need the menu. The food is always prepared quickly, even when it's to go (which is more than half of my visits). And is always still hot when I get home. (Fried calamari is one thing I always order) Top cafe is an option if you are tired of the late night burgers. First time here ordered bolognese meat sauce over spaghetti and Diana chicken steak. The meat sauce was definitely rich but was very unique that the taste was sweet. It reduces the essence of the meat. Different than in hong kong but still flavorful. Will come back and looking forward to try other things on the menu. read more

I'm reviewing the Top Cafe in Cupertino. Review Date: 9/21/2010 Some background of myself, that might help you understand my perspective better when you read my review. I've been living in the South Bay Area for 15+ years, I originally came from Hong Kong, therefore to some I might be a little picky when it comes to Hong Kong Style Food. ---- Price: ---- A typical meal (not breakfast, rice plate + drink) should be around $10 per person. I would say it's average consider the living standard around the area, however it is not the best price in its category. (Refer to the Value section below) ---- Service ---- This is the problem I have the most. Now I'm not expecting a 5-star service of-course, in fact I don't expect much. Just fast service, somewhat not too unfriendly. However, a recent visit (9/19/2010) that prove that the already minimal service can actually get worse. I was ordering to-go that night, as usual I call in first to place my order. I called 3 times, no one answer the phone, I thought they must be really busy since it was a Sunday night after all. So I decided I will just go. I got to the store 5 minutes later, and I was surprise when I walked in. Because it was not busy at all, there are customers, but there are also server/waiter standing there idling. I walk up and try to order my to-go. There was a lady standing behind the bar, I think she is the person who do the drinks. However, she was not doing anything at the moment, since no one is ordering drink I suppose. Despite the fact that I was standing in front of her, she just looked down the floor pretend she didn't see me who stood only 4~5 ft away. At last my order was ready when the kitchen ring the bell, there was one young guy helping other customers. Another guy was just standing aside talking with 1 particular customer seems like friend of his. And the lady continue stood behind the bar doing nothing but ignore her surrounding. Out of no reason, food I ordered were just sitting at the counter for 5 minutes. ---- Food ---- The food is just so-so, not the best yet not the worst in the area. But do keep in mind that this place is not very clean though. However, I found out that to-go 's portion seems to be bigger than dine-in though. ---- Value ---- As mentioned above, the price is about average, however the value is just not there. In comparison to the many HK style restaurant in Oakland or San Francisco, TopCafe's value does not cut at all. Despite the fact that the owner is from SF's ABC restaurant, that I blame the lack of competition in San Jose. One example, Cafe Bakery (I might write review about in the future) in SF offer cheaper price, better tasting food, cleaner environment, faster service, and they even offer free refill milk tea! (Which its a standard in Los Angeles Area) ---- Conclusion ---- TopCafe is not a good restaurant at all, like many said it open very late 3am, but then so does Denny's or Carrow's, and some 24hours Starbucks. It is no where near some of the San Francisco (40 miles away tho) standard, however it can survive because of lack of competition. That said, almost all the HK style restaurant in South Bay (San Jose, Mtn View, Fremont, Sunnyvale, Milpitas...etc) is equally bad if not worse. I guess this is the go to place when there's no where else open to eat in Cupertino. I came here with a large group of friends and each ordered one thing, I thought it was better that way so we could try each other's items. I ordered the Watermelon Juice with Pearls and A.K. ordered the Chicken Steak w/ Tomato Sauce or something. My other friends ordered the Seafood Bake with Rice and Fried Rice. My Watermelon Juice was just that and the pearls were at least decent, if they messed this one up I would've been completely dissatisfied. A.K.'s Chicken Steak was alright, it was Chicken pieces on top of rice topped with a cheese/tomato type of sauce then baked. The sauce and rice were good, but I did not like the multiple shards of chicken bones I found while eating the chicken- bleh! I think the Seafood bake with rice was probably the best thing, it does not come with real crab- but imitation crab, mussels and a cream sauce over rice. The combination made me think of a seafood risotto, yum. Service was so-so, English is not their first language so don't bother asking what certain items are on the menu. I thought it was rude for the cashier to demand tip upon paying as well, it's called gratuity for a reason. P.S. Does anyone else think this place smells funky? read more

Recommend garlic chicken cutlets over rice. Also this place opens til 2 so it's a good spot to grab late night food.

Solid food, no frills, salt and pepper tofu and congee are my go-to items here, although I've ordered other stuff too and not been disappointed. Bonus star for being open late, it was our after drinking eating place for years because they served until 3am, but the hours have changed due to the pandemic. read more

Decent hong-kong style food. Good prices, ok portions. Came here with my parents while they were visiting. Pretty authentic Chinese food, and quite the standard experience: cheap seats, gritty place, decent food. Prices here are cheaper than most, but the portion sizes are also slightly smaller than you would see at a typical Chinese restaurant. Would not recommend fried foods (pork chop and fish) as they were a bit over fried. Flavor profile is authentic, though, so will probably be back to try other foods. read more

I absolutely love that Top Cafe stays open until 3AM. I'm a die-hard night owl, so late-night spots always get extra coolness points. Top Cafe serves Hong Kong-style meals. Though I do prefer the location in Milpitas more, this one is still pretty decent. My top picks here are: chicken steak with black pepper sauce, papaya juice + milk, shredded meat and preserved vegetable vermicelli noodle soup, and pork and preserved vegetable congee/porridge. The food here is always served quickly! The service is pretty good too. Waiter is always attentive. I took off one star because it's a cash only joint (I'm a plastic girl), but they do have an ATM near the restrooms. read more

After a certain hour, there's not a whole lot of places to get food in the area. Top Cafe serves an eclectic set of dishes. A Hong Kong style interpretation of western dishes amongst other things. We showed up for dessert however, got some milk tea and a few dessert jelly selections. Things were fairly standard and service was ok. The people watching however is pretty awesome. There are quite a few weird characters coming through here, and maybe the best reason to drop on in. read more

You've gotta give some love to the decent late nite places like Top Cafe. It's open til 3am, and there are just so many options on the menu! They're all decently priced, too, hovering around the $7 mark. It's a fairly large restaurant with almost-too-bright flourescent lighting, drawing night owls like moths to a flame. The entire strip mall that it's a part of actually has a whole bunch of late nite options, including a pub, a Korean tofu/bbq joint, and a pho place. When we left Top Cafe at around 11:30pm on a Tuesday night, the live band was still going strong at the pub - we'll definitely have to check that out another night. Anyway, my favorite dish from Top Cafe is the salty fish and chicken fried rice. It's pretty tasty. Their HK-style milk tea is pretty good, too; it's a good milk to tea ratio. Another thing I appreciate about this place is the SPEED by which they prepare your food. It's so fast that I almost believe that they're psychic and have started cooking our food even before we order it. It literally took five minutes (after our order of five dishes) for our dishes to arrive at the table. How is that possible??? Kind of crazy, but I don't want to think too hard on it just in case I don't find the reason to my liking. :-) I'll definitely be back whenever I need some late nite fooding options and don't want to go the traditional fast food route. FYI - that strip mall can get pretty busy around 10:30pm. I couldn't find any parking (even though there were plenty of spots), and I ended up parking in the Scandinavian Designs parking lot a street over. Such a popular night spot! read more

Top Cafe is A reliable Hong Kong bistro type restaurant serving up traditional communal dishes, individual rice plates, noodle soup, congee, as well as typical Hong Kong baked rice & pasta dishes along with Hong Kong milk tea and coffee. Foods are decent. My only wishes are they turn up the heat a little more at night and take credit cards. I knocked off one star for these reasons. I'm truly grateful though that they open till 3am!!! The best place for after-midnight Chinese food in the city of Cupertino. I don't think I've ever been to Top Cafe earlier than 1 a.m. in the morning. In a city where everything closes early and when "open late" means past 9 p.m., Top Cafe is the one place that bucks the curfew and serves good Chinese comfort food until 3 a.m. in the morning. They have great fried rice options, including two classics - egg fried rice and Chinese sausage fried rice. The interior of the restaurant is modest. Decor is old, and they have a TV playing old Chinese dramas without sound. The floor is clean, but they look like the bathroom tiles at your grandma's house. One or two of the tables are rickety. Get a table by the window if you can. I've been here on at least 5 or 6 occasions, with each one very clear in my memory. At any other time of day, Top Cafe would probably be no more than 3/5. But at 2 a.m. in the morning, the memories made bonding with friends over comfort Chinese food in Cupertino gives this place 5/5. read more

I'm not picky when it comes to Asian food but I don't even think what we ordered should even be on any restaurant menu at all. I had the egg, tomato sauce, and beef w/ rice and it seriously looked like a poor man's dinner. The beef and egg chow fun was, unfortunately, just as bad as the other dish. The sauce on top really threw me off.. It was slimy and had such an odd texture to it that it was hard for me to swallow. We ended up not eating 3/4 of each plate and threw it away. Cantonese style food. Satisfactory and decently priced I came here late-night with some friends a while ago and we all ordered some random dishes. Do NOT order the Noodle Wonton Soup. It sounded so delicious but they used some weird, thin, ramen-like noodles that were undercooked and ended up being crunchy. My friend said his chicken wings were good, but it's very hard to mess those up. Their meat + veggie chow fun is good though, but be warned! Cantonese-style chow fun has sauce all over it compared to mainland-style chow fun which is dry noodles. Also Cantonese-style food has much less salt than mainland-style food, so if it is bland, it's supposed to be that way. Just add the chili garlic on the table and it should be fine! read more

I've also recommended this restaurant to many of my friends. Today, for the first time I was left speechless with a bad taste in the mouth after lunch. I ordered 3 dishes and normally the waitress would bring a cup of their complimentary spicy soup for each of us. Today she only brought one. When I asked for 2 more, she said you only ordered one dish that comes with soup. I said that's ok, please bring me 2 more and I'd pay for it. I didn't even ask for the price. She then said you could order a big bowl for $6.95. I said great. The more the merrier. When she returned with the bowl of soup, it was the saddest sight, it was watery with hardly any veggies or meat inside and my friend said it was also lukewarm. To me it looked more like dish washing liquid so I called the waitress over and she said you can pour it back into the big bowl so I can microwave it for you. I thought that was kind of odd. My friend had already tried a spoonful in his own little bowl and I had done the same. So we were supposed to pour everything back into the big bowl for her to heat it up? I said the soup was not acceptable because it was watery and had hardly any ingredients in it. My friend and I fell in love with this spicy soup for many years and we'd always looked forward to this soup every time we came. For us, it was the main attraction of this restaurant. She said that's how it came out of the kitchen. Not even a sorry but kept insisting for us to pour everything back into the bowl so she could heat it up for us. Finally I said no, thank you. It's not acceptable and I don't want it. It's watery, cold and nothing like the ones that we'd had in the past. At the end, when I went to pay, the bill was a little bit high so I asked if they included the soup. The waitress said yes because we ordered it besides, the other Leng Nui (beautiful girl) offered to microwave it for us but we refused. I was totally dumbfounded. They don't seem to understand any etiquette for treating their customers especially we've been going there almost weekly, sometimes twice a week for years.
