We came here a couple days ago. I went to this location with my bf & baby girl for our first time. Baby girl and i shared a wet style beef chow fun & it was delish (i didn't care for the beef texture or quality tho). Next time I'm going to see if i can just order it with bok choy only with the chow fun. My bf ordered chicken steak with black pepper sauce on the side, the sauce tasted a little too salty. Overall, we enjoyed our food. Compared to the other top cafes' i have been to this one is more spacious, brighter and more clean. We will definitely come back here. But my only complaint is how unprofessional the guy waiters are...they are speaking out loud throwing F bombs in cantonese, which isn't cool esp when i have my 3 1/2 yr old with us i don't need her hearing or learning inappropriate language in english or cantonese or in general. When I played 'Second Life' for a hot minute, I created this Asian female character named 'Baby' who was horrifically fat and deformed and cock-eyed. I made 'Baby' run around naked chasing after folks yelling 'Give Baby a Hug!!!!!' I didn't think it was possible for me to eat even MORE greasy cheap late-night Chinese food outside of DC. I lived down the street from DC's 'Chinatown' with it's cheap open till 3am hole in the walls and MY GOD I turned into a chunky monkey after 5 years there. I swear part of the reason I moved back to the south bay was to avoid getting horribly fat again. So then OMG why do I revert back to old habits and find the ONE late night Chinese diner RIGHT NEXT to my house whose menu is even MORE hole in the wall than any place in DC? I have never seen 'spam' and 'ramen noodles' listed so many times on any menu. I like the casually studied indifference the waiters exude and the skillful way they throw the two menus and your blank check at you. But mostly, I love that it's well-lighted, open late, cheap, and close by. I like the chatter of Cantonese and Mandarin and occasionally Tagalog so I can zone out or else watch bad Chinese soap operas (sorry folks, but Korea's where it's at for dramas!). i first went into here not knowing anything about hk food, but i lucked out when i ordered something randomly. i usually get the "beef with egg and rice", it's tasty, different from the usual chinese food but still not too weird for those who don't want to stray so far. i have seen a lot of other dishes that look less than apetizing, though. my friend ordered some kind of steamed chicken and the chicken skin still had chicken hair (? that's what it looked like to me) on its skin. is it supposed to be like that?? either way, it was pretty gross :[ never tried any of the western dishes service has always been nothing to complain about whoever said that there are usually flies buzzing around inside was right :[ but like somebody else said they're open late and it beats denny's read more

My first Yelp review! Yay! I don't know how many years I've been looking for a place like this around where I live. I mean, they built something similar in Downtown Mountain View and I was ecstatic, but alas, it's still too far away to go regularly. So after the Warriors game last night, my girlfriend and I decided to stop by to try some cheap, fast, Cantonese-style food. There weren't too many people in there at 10 pm on a Sunday night, and so we got our pick and grabbed the booth closest to the door. Since fellow yelper Diana's positive review suggested the salty fish and chicken fried rice, I opted to try that in addition the beef chow fun. I also ordered a cup of hot lemon tea to wash it down, and I'm glad I did since the noodles were a bit on the greasy side (just the way I like it!). Overall, the food wasn't anything to write home about, but it was pretty good and it did satisfy my hunger for some good ol' fashioned Chinese food. And since my dad's a chef of this type of cuisine before I was even a fetus, I think I'm somewhat qualified to make that claim. Thus, upon leaving, I asked for a menu since I will definitely be coming back. Oh, by the way, it helps to speak Cantonese when you're ordering; otherwise, bring someone who does. Their Mandarin and English are passable (from what I overheard), but c'mon. Also, make sure you call the right number if you're ordering for a pick-up. They have more than one restaurant, and the waiter was telling me that he'd lost track the number of times that people had come to the Cupertino/SJ restaurant expecting their food to be ready after placing an order in Milpitas. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is the fact that it's open until 3 am. The food is sub-par and the restaurant itself definitely is not very clean. Normally for Chinese food, the dingier place, the better the food but Top Cafe manages to be dirty AND terrible. A definite anomaly for Chinese food. If you're out past midnight and are looking for a place to eat, do yourself a favor and drive the extra couple miles to McDonald's or Jack in The Box on Prospect. read more

Sorry to hear of fellow Yelper WDLs driver's license incident there. I love the original Top Cafe in Milpitas. Their HK style milk tea (milpitas) is sans pariel. Tried the same beef tongue over rice in Cupertino and noticed the beef tongue was subject to freezer burns and the generic HK Chaa chan teng white sauce was a bit "hashy" (couldnt find a better word for that) Not so in Milpitas which has been consistent over the years. Service is a lot friendlier in Milpitas vs. Cupertino. They should realize there's a bit of competition from Broadway bistro across the street. read more

There's this huge poster inside Top Cafe these days pointing out that you should go vote for them online as one of the Top 100 Chinese restaurants in America... haha SURE! I believe every Cupertino/West SJ local knows of this place as the guaranteed late night Chinese food place to go. Always open till 3am. A golden rule when arriving at the late hours of 1:00-3am is that you must be either intoxicated or under some kind of influence. This helps make their very mediocre cafe food taste so much better. Trust me, it works wonders. Average price of a dish HK cafe style is $5.75 to $8. The selection of Cantonese/Chinese dishes is quite varied. Portions here are just enough to hit the spot when your drunk and willing to devour just about anything in front of you. It's hard to complain that this place isn't very good when it's the only place that serves in reasonable time at a late hour when nothing else is open. No, Carrows won't do, they take a year and a half to get your food out. Service has been improving slowly, I think the late night Cantonese guy waiter has heard a bit too many complaints. He's been working there for years now after all. Avoid if possible but go when your late night munchies leave you with no other choice. read more

This is one of the few places in the happening town of Cupertino that opens late for those who party the night away (the others being a Pho restaurant and a Jack in the Box). I can say that I've been here 3 times and I can also say that I will never come back here again. It's so bad that its a disgrace for Chinese food. I feel like the location in Milpitas on Barber Lane has the best cook. This location is spacious and the workers seemed chill. Together, my boyfriend and I got Beef Chow Fun, Baked Seafood with Rice, and West Lake Beef Soup. The chow fun had way too much bean sprout in it. I mean some is okay, but there was just way too much. I picked A LOT out. And the beef, well, it did not taste good. It did not have the beef texture. It tasted like it was precooked and coated with a shit load of corn starch. The baked seafood was okay. I've gone here before with friends, and it's good, typical Asian fare. This time, I ordered through DoorDash, if that makes any difference. I got the baked seafood rice and the spareribs and vegetable (bok choy) chow fun. The spareribs were good, but too many noodles, not enough spareribs. The baked seafood rice was perfect, though! Just the right amount of cream to soak into the rice, and a generous amount of squid shrimp, and mussels (yum!). We came in at 2:17am, & still we were being rudely rushed to order, & were hounded & constantly informed the kitchen closed at 2:30am. Then why even stay "open" until 3am?! I'd say only one dish is really worth getting here, and that is the baked seafood with rice. Buttery, filling and very much unhealthy for you but still (guiltily) delicious. The interior of the restaurant is pragmatic, unpolished, and utilitarian: metal tables scattered around, plain walls, etc. In general one does not come to Top Cafe for the atmosphere but rather the unhealthy dishes and the late hours at which they stay open. read more

If you have a late night craving and need a quick fix...this is the place to go especially since it is open till 3am! It's better than going to Denny's...and the food is "a lot better" says my friend! :) The place is cafeteria-style...meaning the long tables with seats on each side. The staff is what you get at any typical asian restaurant, no small talk...they seat you, give you water or tea, take your order, serve your food, and leave you your check. Nothing fancy but that's okay...when you're here that late, it's usually 'cuz we're hungry :)...so we like the quick service. I've had a few dishes here but the 2 dishes that stands out for me are the salty fish and chicken fried rice, and congee with preserved duck egg. This four star review is for their BAKED PORK CHOP OVER RICE. It's sooooo good! It's the only thing I order from Top Cafe unless I come with other people and they order other things for me to try. But I always want this when I come here. I totally recommend this dish. Service is not to bad. Always the same guy workers. And be cautious about TIPPING because they will tell you if you tipped or not!! (which I find kind of rude in a way..) This is the only place open late at night besides Carrows around here that I know of. While it is no glorious Chinese restaurant does it really matter when you are piss drunk? When I eat here most likely I will be puking it within the house since I over did it with the alcohol. This is the quintessential HK style cafe I grew up with and love-- for those who don't quite know, it's a combo of casual Cantonese style food + more "western" style dishes influenced by British colonialism in HK (catered economically and by taste to the HK working class, who couldn't quite afford European restaurants so made it their own-- think Cantonese diner, not Panda Express). I've loved their baked spaghetti bolognese with Borscht soup since I was a kid, and their sparerib chow fun is another go-to. I've been here a little short of a million times and I could not love it any more than I do now. Just, trust me on this. The pricing is amazing. I used to live in the Cupertino area and I'd go here out of convenience. The food/drinks are far from pricey and it's good. I've moved now but I still go here when I can, even if it's out of the way. We go here often, once a month probably. It is consistently good. They have a three item special for a family that's $27. There's a good choice of items. They are always very accommodating to my toddler. If it feels fresh and tasty. The only good things about this restaurant are their hours and their cheap afternoon discount. If you were a Silicon Valley workaholic getting off from work past midnight, they would still serve you while most restaurants were closed. There are a few branches in the area. The one in Milpitas opens late past midnight too. The chef is below par in my opinion. I ate there many times before but I don't remember I crave for any dish from this restaurant. Their regular Chinese dishes like those in their set dinner for 10 and those posted in Chinese writing on the wall are pretty good. But this is a Hong Kong cafe, I expect to order the HK cafe food which they fail to deliver. Only the items written on the menu remind me of Hong Kong. Once I started eating, that feeling was gone. The pearls in the pearl tea are the worst I've ever tasted in the bay area. Try Fantasia Tea's pearls, they taste better. [update] They offer $3.50 afternoon tea specials on weekdays after 2:30pm. Drinks are at $1.50 during the afternoon hours. Broadway Bistro across the street used to be a competitor offering the same kind of food.
