I like the original tops better on Michillinda. The breakfast burritos here are average as every topping adds up in price. What I do like here is the pastrami chili cheese fries! We visited Tops Burger today (5/18) during the lunch rush after being given a $20 off Groupon voucher from my stepdad. The lady behind the counter seemed a bit intimidating at first, but she was nice and kindly informed us that we couldn't use both of our vouchers at the same time, but can do two separate transactions. Majority of my family seemed to have ordered the pastrami burger, or the bacon cheeseburger. Except for me: I ordered a Carne Asada burrito. Honestly, if I were to base this review off of my food itself, I would no doubt give this place ONE STAR. My burrito was so disgusting, it had absolutely no taste. Mind you, I LOVE Mexican food, but this has got to be the nastiest burrito yet. It was dry, and tasted like pure onions. The meat itself was flavorless and hard. The reason why I'm rounding it all the way up to 4 stars? My whole family enjoyed it, and the serving size was huge! We also ordered a side of chili cheese fries (to die for), onion rings (eh,) and zucchini fries. Just like what I mentioned, their chili cheese fries were to die for. For someone who HATES chili cheese fries, this was very good in my opinion! Thankfully I had this to eat, since my burrito had failed me. The chili tasted homemade, and not from a bag, like Tommy's. Yup, three stars. Surprised? I'll make this simple: Good food. Okay service... actually, lower than okay. This was the normal grub spot if you're a Pasadenean. During the high school days, whether it was in the 80s, 90s, or 2000s, this was the place to go when classes were ditched, after a football game down the street at PCC (Pasadena area high schools used their field), school dance, or a movie. This was one of those spots you "had to be seen in" if you wanted to fit in. Moving on.... My tastes have changed. I avoid the places that use Restaurant Depot, Smart and Final, or whatever to supply their meat, dairy, bread, produce, etc... all these places taste alike, from Wonder Burger to Jim's Burger, not that these places aren't delicious. They're all very good; I grew up goin' to these iconic Pasadena joints, but by today's standards with fancy food trucks (I hate those effing things) and bourgeois burger spots, Tops is now generic and mediocre. I'd rather opt for Oinkster or Dog Haus or El Loco (no longer in Arcadia), where the true in-store, hand packed beef patties are fresh, are a good cut, and just done right. Yeah, I might sound like a burger snob, but I still hit up burger joints like Tops when it strikes me, I just don't go to Tops (Lucky Boy, WOO HOO!!!). Ok, now that I've established that Tops, and its cousins are still delicious, albeit generic, here's why I gave 'em 3 stars: Rude service. The last two times I went there, I was met with attitude while putting in my order; no need for details. It was blatant and the guy takin' my order pretty much wanted to knuckle up outside. If you don't mind assholes, and want delicious generic food, give this place a shot. If you have little tolerance for people like this, stay on Walnut and you have Dog Haus a few blocks west on Hill Ave., or In-N-Out Burger a couple of blocks to the east (stay on the left fork where Walnut splits into Foothill Blvd.). read more

I have one complaint about the customer service. Their was this lady on the side of the cashier and I asked for ranch. I knew she was going to say that it's 50 cents. So I had my Apple Pay ready and gave it to her. She looked me in the eye and said "I don't have a scanner here." But yet the cashier was literally 2 steps away. So she made me go in line when it was super long. Other than that, the Assad fries were great and the onion wings as well. They give you a great quantity for everything. I frequent the other tops location about 2 times per month. Once I saw the groupon deal for this location I acted quickly!! What a steal - $12 for $20 worth of food! Well, what they didn't happen to mention in the fine print is that tax was not covered in the groupon. So not only was $3 of my groupon wasted, I also had to cough up $1.61. Which, may not seem like a big deal. But I'm on a budget - and now my $12 for $20 deal was a $12 for $15, woo-hoo. Oh and not to mention I had to walk all the way back to my car, 2 blocks, in the sweltering heat to find their $1.61, in change of course. (Parking sucks!!) Anyways, after I recovered from my heat stroke, I was able to take a bite of my "food" that was less than room temp warm, since it had been laying on the counter with flies buzzing around it while I walked two blocks to get their tax money, $1.61. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I was in the mood for pastrami. So I took a shot. ( A little background: I've never had a *good* pastrami sandwich in the L. A. area anywhere but a Jewish deli. Pretty good fast food place. Tried the turkey burger, onion rings and fried zuc. The former was A-ok. Special sauce (don't know if it's secret) gave it a bit of punch, it had lots of fresh lettuce and tomato, onion was nice and crisp--good size for the price. The latter two lacked salt. It's okay, though. They gave us plenty of ranch and ketchup to compensate (but you shouldn't need either ideally). Food came out pretty quickly (we did carryout) and the staff was nice. Even let us sample the onion rings first. Lastly, the portions of the sides are enormous. And they're called small. So the large must be, dunno, the size of Kentucky. This place has the best chili cheese fries in all of the world, I've tried Chili Cheese Fries in all of the places you'd expect to find great fries, but have been disappointed again and again. If you are sitting in the restaurant to eat, I recommend getting the Large with added white onions. But if you are going through the drive-thru get the small with the added onions, the large cant accommodate the extra toppings, so the small gives you that extra room.. This place also has my favorite burrito in the world. It's called the California Burrito. It comes in either chicken or steak, I always get the chicken version and pair it with a side of ranch dressing. One of my favorite late-night options if I'm staying nearby. My favorites are the gyros and the burgers. I know both are "fast food style" but that's what really hits the spot late at night. Gyros - nice and big, plenty of meat (and it's not dehydrated out like a lot of places would serve them), but also plenty of tomatoes and lettuce. They serve the tzatziki on the side to prevent things from getting soggy. The bread is fluffy and thick. It's basically the "fast food" gyros in great form. The burgers are also good. Yes, they are thin (not 1/2lb patties, but that's expected in fast food joints), but they are good, kinda like how In-n-Out can do thin patties fast, but still be good. I won't do a comparison of those two (it's not fair). It's exactly the type of food you need late at night, and has multiple good options at good prices for the big eaters. Tops is perfect for when you need a HUGE amount of greasy comfort food at the end of a long day, after drinking, or when you've just given up on the notion of ever being thin again and maybe purchased a muumuu. My go-to is a grilled cheese and a kids order of fries. Keep in mind the kids order is still massive!!! I can never even finish them and I am kind of a french fry addict. The manager was really nice and as we were finishing he let us know we could get free refills on our drinks. I got a lettuce wrap avocado bacon cheeseburger and it was very tasty.
