A rare disappointment from Tops for me. My wife, in the Pasadena area again, made a stop by Tops and took phone requests for takeout. Our son, A Pastrami sandwich. Myself, Chicken and Fish tacos, as well as an order of onion rings. And for herself, the Pastrami burger and fried Zucchini. While the family seemed satisfied with their orders. I, on trying a a few items for the first time, found them highly lacking. The Fish taco was okay taste wise but was quite soggy with the abundance of sauce totally soaking through the two soft tortillas. A complete taco collapse! I had to finally eat the bulk of it with a fork. The Onion rings I found to be rather bland and a mix of both crunchy and soggy. I could only eat half of them and will attempt reheating and eating the remainder today. And saving my Chicken taco for today, it looked more like shredded beef than chicken. It was chicken but very unsatisfying to the taste and I couldn't force myself to finish eating it.. My Individual Ratings: Fish Taco 3.5/5 Chicken Taco 2/5 Onion Rings 2.5/5 But I'll be back.

The place is large and has outside seating. You place an order and when they call your receipt number, you pick up your food. I ordered chili burger. It was larger than the bun, but there was barely any chili in it. Still it was plenty and tastes good. The burrito was also OK. At least the staff are nice.

1st time back here after more than 13 years. It was packed at both locations. Didn't have to wait much after ordering, need more seating availability, as well as updating the seating & tables. Looks the same after even 13yrs ago or even longer. Cheese burgers we're fresh as always, pretty good also, the chili cheese fries were a shareable portion my husband & I still couldn't finish it, they were pretty good felt the type of fries they used were okay, not the best quality of fries, felt the chili was bland but over all great food still after many years later. Probably won't be returning any time soon.

Okay, look up the Alberto's -bertos SoCal variations. That's literally what happened here when I was foolishly baited in by not paying attention and thinking that since I was in Pasadena, naturally any Tops Burgers was the Original Tops (mind you, is like within the vicinity and a couple minutes away). I foolishly didn't realize until I was at the drive thru order menu and I was like wait a minute, this doesn't look familiar at all and at that point it was a tad too late and I was already looking at a super long commute back home. Service was polite and efficient enough for a big order and they put everything that I ordered in a white to go box, which was nice. Everything was SUPER oily and greasy though, so my car did smell like fried foods and the oil permeated the box and the napkins I didn't take out in time. From my order I got the: 1) Corndog: -I needed something to eat as I was driving almost an hour to get home and this was the most driving while eating friendly food on the menu. -It was probably my most favorite thing on the menu. Comes out super piping hot as everything was freshly fried and prepared. -Not a super thick layer of corn dog batter, so it it was mostly hot dog being eaten. Not bad since I prefer this over a soggy corn dog any day. 2) Large Fries: -Huge amount of fries. Lined an entire 1/3 of the to go box that I ordered. Definitely very shareable. -Initially crispy and fairly decent. Reminds me of canola oil fried fries if that makes any sense. But quickly became soggy and also super greasy. 3) 1/4 Lbs Tops Burger: -Comes with dressing, lettuce, tomato, and onion. -Despite having the name of the restaurant on the menu item name, this was just a standard burger you can get from any burger place. If anything, it's comparable to a burger that you can get at the campus cafeteria. Not bad, but not that memorable either. 4) Pastrami Sandwich on Rye Bread: -Huge, comes cut in half, packed to the brim with pastrami. There's also pickles and mustard in it. Impressive too look at and super filling and shareable if you give the second half to another person. -Insanely greasy though, super soggy and made the bread soggy and the wrapping soggy, and seeped into the box. -I know that the inherent nature of pastrami is to be salty, but this was overly salty and made even more so with the sourness of the pickles and mustard. Disappointing, since this was the item that I was looking forward to the most. Since I know for a fact that there's other options in Pasadena, this was just okay. Doesn't stand out from the other smaller independent fast food and burger joints spread throughout the 626.

Went there for a pastrami sandwich thinking it was going to be well a pastrami sandwich because of the hype it's gotten on social media , and to my surprise it was this tiny sandwich with two small prices of bread which was all I tasted(bread) very very little pastrami. No I won't be going back!

Not sure the difference between this location and The Orginial Tops but I was very delighted with this location. They did not disappoint! The drive thru line was out into the street so that was already a good sign. We decided to dine in and the food came out fast but fresh! We started with the chili cheese fries, and they were so flavorful and absolutely delicious. The portion was huge! Definitely big enough to share. We also tried the pastrami cheeseburger, which was juicy, packed with flavor, and really satisfying. The bacon cheeseburger was just as good, cooked perfectly and full of flavor. We also ordered the pastrami sandwich. At $16 for just the sandwich, it's a bit on the pricey side, but the quality made it worth it. Overall, everything we had was really good, and the portions and taste made for a great experience. We'll definitely be back!

Fish taco. Actually tasty, just kinda soggy because of all the garnish and pico de gallo, which I love but maybe put on the side.

I lowered a star due to the last few trips here have been less than ideal. Several times the French fries were cold, soggy and limp, which is rarely a good thing. Today we had a burger and a fish taco and fries. The burger was great, fish taco was good (a bit soggy so maybe for to go orders put the topping on the side?) the fries were actually floppy and barely warm. It was eaten within 5-10 minutes of receipt, so they went into the box cold and limp. Not great! Last time we came here I was given the wrong food, no apology, no call back, despite multiple calls and even was told there was "no manager" and they put the phone down and started taking orders and working leaving me on hold for like 15 minutes with zero resolution and never responded. I'm very disappointed that they gave me cold, old, soggy, limp fries the first time I give them a chance after staying away nearly a year because of the last experience. My daughter got old soggy pancakes and I got the wrong breakfast burritos and it was never resolved last round. Ended up with some mystery meat California burritos when I ordered bacon, egg and cheese or similar. The ticket was totally wrong also. They took the order, gave me old already made food and just washed their hands of it. Not a good look when prices are now quite high. It was $17 for those 3 items, one of which was basically inedible. Ate at home so can't really speak to the current ambiance but it's usually pretty decent. It's a diner type place and very serviceable and clean, perhaps the most important fact. On the fence about retuning since I've gotten lousy fries repeatedly over the past 2 years. Not sure why they can't just make some fresh and no make a bunch at a time because they get old and gross, fast.

Went through the drive through, the guy at the window was nice and food didn't take very long to make, they gave us some house salsa that had a nice amount of heat to it that we enjoyed. The burrito was filling and not overly heavy. Solid breakfast choice for the price.

I was sitting in traffic when I suddenly realized that I was hungry. I exited the freeway and decided on Tops Burgers. A hamburger restaurant I last visited over five years ago. I parked and went into the restaurant. After going back and forth on what I wanted to eat, I went with French toast. I waited approximately six minutes for my food to arrive, and I must admit, the French toast was delicious! Soft, tasty, and well prepared. The restaurant was spotless and busy, as it is a popular place for a delicious meal. The male employee who assisted me was friendly and polite. Parking is available in their private lot to the rear of the location.

Tops / Burger is located at 1792 East Walnut Street Pasadena, California 91106. It is a busy corner intersecting with Allen Avenue. It is located just off the 210 freeway. It is a Pasadena treasure. It has a great history and great food! It is very consistent with good service, diverse menu, and freshly prepared food. It doesn't matter whether you're there when it opens at 7:00 a.m. or late at 11:00 during the week or 12:00 midnight on the weekends. The drive-thru is an added Plus. The interior is kept clean and cozy with booths and tables available most of the time. There are times when it does get very busy. The staff is constantly keeping up with cooking food and keeping customers happy! I had some questions about popular items to order. I decided on an Original Top's Burger Special with Pastrami, a Chicken Club Sandwich, and of course, their Famous Chili Cheese Fries! The Chicken Club was special for this week. They have weekly specials periodically. A nice change of pace to an always tasty menu. Everything was packed carefully. It was easy to carry walking a short distance home. As I opened each item, the aroma of freshly cooked, flavorful food permeated my kitchen. It made tasting each item even more satisfying. The chicken club was done perfectly with each item having its own flavor. The chicken was tender and moist. Bacon, lettuce, and tomato on that lightly toasted bread was the perfect combination. The Original Top's Burger with Pastrami had the right combination of condiments to make it bright, tasty, and a memorable burger. I got all the condiments they suggested and it was a perfect combination. The chili cheese fries were as the perfect loaded with cheese and chili. The fries were long and freshly cut. You have to order these whether you come here for breakfast lunch or dinner. With a menu that has something for everyone from morning until evening, Top's is worth a trip from anywhere. It is a go-to place for those just visiting Pasadena. Breakfast items are next on my list. I look forward to trying that breakfast burrito with fresh eggs.

We were in Altadena showing my lady where i used to live and decided to take her to this spot i have not been to for sometime. I ordered my usual grilled chicken salad for both us with side of onion rings with ice tea and orange bang. Well still delicious and the home made ranch still bomb. Everything under $40 and let him tell you huge salads with black olives, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs was real good. The onion rings not greasy with the ranch wow. Nice and clean inside and bathroom is available for men and women. Definitely stop by always support your local businesses. Thank you Tops still great food.

I have been coming to this place for the last 12 years of my life and boy this place is great. By far this has the best burgers and chilli cheese fries i have had for a fast food restaurant. The burger are a great size and full of flavor. Also the order of fries are huge!! They have a big variety of great foods and combinations. The Mexican food is also great there. Let's call it 2 1/2 stars rounded up to a 3. Guacamole bacon burger was good, although tough to hold together. I was looking forward to the zucchini fries, but was disappointed. Perhaps zucchini chips à la Carl's Jr. might come out better. Maybe I'll go for the gyro next time. read more

They have horrible customer service and the employees can care less. I went there for the first time because I had a groupon and I'll never go back there again. The food was decent. I ordered a chili cheese burger and they gave me a regular cheeseburger. I should've checked before I left. Me and my boyfriend are almost daily customers. I have been coming for 3 years and he has been coming about 15 years. This food has never disappointed. The people are always nice and friendly with us. Sometimes drive thru can b a bit long but usually when they are packed. This Pasadena classic combines delicious burgers, sandwiches, and sides with a comfortable decor and a couple of big screen televisions with sports or news. i eat here almost everyday mon-fri... i work right up the street so i can walk there... i love their food... pastrami sandwich, burgers, tacos, salads, sandwiches and soup!!! tip for those who have never eaten there.... if you want a burger i recommend ordering the jr cheeseburger meal... trust me the jr size is the regular size anywhere else... and it's only 4.19 plus tax... the salsa is awesome... and the people that work there always make me feel welcome... read more

Their Tops special is my favorite item which is a cheeseburger with pastrami. Their fried zucchini is very good. But do yourself a favor and just order small fries or zucchini as those are quite large. read more

Amazing place, my favorite place to be. Though I've only been to the place once myself, I was on a trip to the museum and stopped by for lunch. The food is incredibly good and for a good cost. They give a large amount especially the fries they had. I couldn't finish the fries there, so I took it home after it got cold. I microwaved it and it came back to being hot and smell just as good as it was first made and given to me at the restaurant. Even my sister had the temptations for them. read more

Love the Tops Burger Special, it was filled with goodness and definitely tasty. The pastrami on the burger was delicious, and they don't skimp on anything. My son loved the chili fries and would definitely come back for more. All in all it was a good experience other than my order got mixed up in the kitchen, but they fixed it quickly. read more

Yup! Those chili cheese fries were huge! Should have ordered the smaller size, haha. Burger was cooked to order, tasted great! There's a reason why I buy at least 4 of the groupon ($5 for $10) everytime they go up for sale. The fried zucchinis are good (just a bit over battered) but they are very generous with their portions. Fries are hot and crispy. Love the free pickled carrots. read more

I have to say I prefer Tops over Lucky Boys. The bread is thinner and the burger taste a little fresher, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, it really enhanced the burger. There is a lot on their menu, but I just stick to the burger. You can't beat the price, 2 cheeseburgers, 1 order of onion rings, 2 medium drinks = $14. And it's fresh! You can tell buy the patties their not as symmetrical because they make em themselves. read more

First of all, I love food. I'll try just about anything, and most of what I try is delicious. It really hits the pallet, but coming here and reading the reviews below I'm very disappointed. I ordered a pastrami sandwich, it was eh. The fried zucchini was overly battered and too fried. The chili cheese fries were what almost made me cry of disappointment. I love chili cheese fries, but here, the chili tasted weird, over seasoned old taco meat. And adding jalapeños does not make it chili. I will definitely not be coming back, ill just go to Jims in Boyle Heights as they know how to make delicious pastrami sandwiches and chili cheese fries. If I can give it no stars I would, but I gave it one because the raspberry iced tea hit the spot. read more

Ordered 3 pastrami sandwiches to go with 2 small fries and i regular order of fries. Tip; the small fries are big enough for 2 persons. The pastrami was great and the bun was super soft. Came with pickles and mustard. When we went during the week, the take out line was 6 cars long at 2pm! Went inside and placed the order to go. They boxed everything up and was in the car in less than 10 minutes. As I was walking out, the last car in the to go line was just placing their order. Lot is small but fills up during lunch hours. Will have to try the breakfast burritos next time! We will be back! read more

Quality food, but the service is CRAP the people behind the counter are RUDE AF that's the reason why I gave it 2 stars for the food only! The dining room is riddled by NON CUSTOMERS sliding in from the side door using the restroom. So take your food to go, so you don't have to deal with in dinning problems. read more

I've been going here since I was a little kid. Always loved the food but I have had it with them charging for ranch. Today I spent almost $20 worth of food, but yet when I asked for ranch they wanted to charge me $0.50 for the ranch. That is so ridiculous. Went to Pasadena to visit family and we cannot leave without stopping at Top's. Even though it was high volume customers, they are so efficient, they have it down to an art form. I have tried different places for pastrami but this is definitely the best place. The portion size is the best, you will never leave hungry. read more

Established in 1983.

The name comes from the family's coffee shop and restaurant started by Uncle Jim Bicos in the beginning of the 1950s in Pasadena, on Colorado Blvd. His brother, Terry Bicos, decided to open Tops Jr. (a fast food hamburger stand in Alhambra) which is still there under new ownership. He wanted to give customers quality, homemade food, fast. His concept was a success.

I don't know where they got the name for their fantastic Sycamore Sandwich, but it's a pastrami reuben with cole slaw instead of sauerkraut, and it very well could be the best I've had outside of New York. Thin, mostly lean pastrami stacked with Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and homemade Thousand Island dressing served hot on grilled rye bread. A heavenly handheld! The thin, crispy onion rings were cooked perfectly, to where the coating was almost falling off, and just oily enough to give moisture and flavor, but not greasy. The fresh, thin, hand cut fries were great by themselves but then add the beef chili and melted cheese, it could be a great meal by itself. Don't forget the Patty Melt, too. Since I do not like tofu, I politely asked the employee serving me, Austin, if he could provide the eggplant with little or no tofu. Austin immediately told me that he could not do that and that the dish had to be served with tofu. Unsatisfied with the response, I approached the cashier, Hannah, and asked if I could speak with the manager. Hannah responded professionally and asked if she could help first. She listened to my concern, treated me respectfully, and attempted to assist me. I even complimented her by saying that she demonstrated excellent customer service and that I would hire someone with her attitude anytime. After hearing my compliment to Hannah, Austin appeared upset. Instead of focusing on serving customers, he approached Hannah and confronted her. He then went to find the manager, Ken. I found this behavior unprofessional and inappropriate, especially in front of customers. I even have a photograph showing part of this interaction. When Manager Ken came out, I explained my concern regarding Austin's attitude and lack of customer service. After some discussion, Ken eventually agreed to provide the eggplant dish with only a small amount of tofu. This demonstrated that a reasonable accommodation could have been made from the beginning. My concern is not the food itself but the manner in which I was treated. Austin seemed more interested in defending himself and discussing the matter with coworkers and management than serving customers. His behavior created an uncomfortable atmosphere and reflected poorly on the restaurant. I would like this matter reviewed and hope that additional customer service training can be provided. On the other hand, I would like to commend Hannah for her professionalism, patience, and excellent customer service. I've gone twice in my life. Once about 4-5 years ago, and once last week. I'm going to go off the last week experience. This is the only place in the LA area I've found a California burrito (burrito w/ fries inside). Since I go to school in San Diego, I've become extremely used to the Cali burrito, and miss it every time I come back to LA. While they don't have the thick fries that usually makes a Cali burrito awesome, the sheer volume of the thin fries they put in pretty came close to making it as good. My buddy got the chili cheese fries which I got when I went there years ago, and they were as awesome as I remember. The only problem I had was that I was in a big group, about 6 orders, and mine was last. It seemed like mine was taking especially long to be called, which prompted me to go to the counter and ask what's up. They got my food out pretty quick. Tops Burgers never disappoints! Every time I tell myself I'm going to be healthy, I order the chicken Caesar salad... and then somehow a large chili cheese fries with pastrami magically ends up on my tray. It's all about balance, right? The salad is always fresh, the fries are loaded with flavor, the pastrami is tender, and everything comes out hot and delicious. I am allergic to cilantro. Asked for no cilantro on the taco. Instead I got a fish taco loaded with cilantro. I order 2 items and they screw up both items. I grew up going to this Tops, and it's honestly disappointing to see how far it's gone downhill. The food quality has been rough. Breakfast burritos used to be a go-to, but lately they've been bland and poorly made. On top of that, orders get messed up way too often. It feels like there's no consistency anymore. This place is not your typical fast food place. The quality and food looks and tastes like real food! My favorite is the bacon avocado cheese burger. Their fries are amazingand so are the zzucchini fries and the onion rings. Very interesting selection of food. I also like the Greeek salad and the tortilla soup. Love their food!! read more

Yup, what do you expect, it's Tops! And if you haven't tried it, then you must. Pricey, but the portions are for sharing, especially the fries. Delicious all around. Love their chicken tostado salad and the service by Armando is always amazing! I live across the street at a wonderful apartment complex and frequent this restaurant drive thru. The prices are reasonable and the wait is never too long! There is a plethora of items to choose from! Highly recommended! read more

I recently stopped by this hamburger joint and was really impressed. The burgers were juicy and full of flavor, the chili fries were crispy and loaded with tasty chili and super cheesy, and the chicken sandwich was well seasoned and tender. Definitely a spot worth visiting again. read more

I have been driving through Tops for years. I've tried many different items on their menu. Most are real good. Prices have become a little steep but I still give 5 stars for service and food. One of my favorites is the Carne Asada Tostada salad. Tops is Tops. hahahahahahaha ! read more

The food is good they have a delicious avocado and bacon cheese burger. Try the fried zucchini or onion rings, although you are charged for any condiments (got charged .50cents for ranch after paying over $20 for my order which seems ridiculous) read more

We had 2 Pastrami's a small order of fry's 2 small drinks. Over $27. And it tasted awful. The entire place needs an upgrade. Its old, dirty and run down. Tom's down the street is much better. Won't be going back there again. read more
