    Chilaquiles
    Susan F.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a friendly place. It's very small, making it a great place to sit with a friend in a quiet atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's not a place for a big party, but if you get your food to go, there is a courtyard around back.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We usually go for breakfast after going to the farmers market. I always get chilaquiles verdes con cesina (try it once and you'll know why!). My daughter tells me that the birria chilaquiles is "bomb". The portions are huge. I love the al pastor. The flavor is perfectly spicy and just the right amount of sweet to make your mouth very very happy. The staff are so friendly here. It really feels like the perfect place after shopping Old Town for some down time with delicious food. There are parking lots all around the area, and one can - occasionally - find street parking. But even if you have to pay for a spot, do it! It's worth it.

Came here with some girlfriends for a quick dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was pretty empty on a Saturday at 7pm. It's a pretty small establishment with maybe 4 tables and some window counter seating but clean and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So one downside was they only accepted cash or Zelle and they didn't really have an itemized tab. I ordered the birria chilaquiles and asked to add guacamole. My friends ordered the birria plate and menudo both with flour tortillas. We also got individual flan desserts as well. When it came out they got corn tortillas and I didn't notice mine did not include the guacamole I asked for until after we left. So not the best about making sure orders are accurate. Another downside of them not using a computer system since I'm pretty sure I was charged for the guac and didn't get it. As for the food, it was just ok. Not the best and not the worst and that was the consensus amongst the group and we grew up in El Sereno so we know good Mexican food. My chilaquiles didn't taste like the chips were freshly it was already pretty soggy. It's all right for Pasadena but for authentic Mexican this is prob not where you'll want to go and price point was a little on higher end.

I ordered the vegetarian taco after reading this restaurant sold the best vegetarian tacos in the area in a magazine. I ordered at the counter and ate outside. The woman who took my order was nice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside was colorful, and there were a few tables outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The vegetarian taco was very full with ingredients including a generous portion of fresh avocado, rice, lettuce, tomato, beans and cheese. You can select the salsa based on spice level. Food was fresh and yummy. Price is on the higher side, but portions are big.

Soooo freaking good! [[HIGHLIGHT]]A quaint little restaurant in downtown Pasadena.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got the birria torta and the pollo enchiladas rancheras and loved both! Be sure to ask for the salsa on the side too the spicy salsa was our absolute fav but all three were delicious! Service was amazing they were quick and attentive. Next time we're in Pasadena we will definitely be passing by Tortas Mexico again!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Delicious breakfast and great courtyard to sit in![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got the chorizo omelette and heuvos rancheros.

It's not every day you come across a neighborhood institution that actually lives up to the hype. I've heard great things about this place for a while and decided to stop by for lunch yesterday. Conveniently located on Holly/Fair Oaks, it's a perfect place to grab lunch during the work week. With their variety of tacos, tortas, burritos, combo plates, and more, there's something for everyone. I've only tried their asada burrito, but I will defintely be back for their tacos and tortas. Ambience: You can just feel all the love that was poured into this place when you take in the interior. Colorful art lines the walls with warmth and flowers bring life to the corners they touch. Even the counter tiles of classical, intricate Mexican design add to the authenticity of the space. Food: When was the last time you had a burrito that was FILLED TO THE BRIM with meat? Yeah, me too But in a world where that's the norm, Tortas Mexico TRULY stands above the rest With the first bite already full of rich, salty, succulent asada I knew the rest was going to be good. The rice, beans, cilantro, and other components all worked to compliment the asada (which I was told they're known for) in flavorful harmony while not overpowering it. Since I generally get full easily, I saved about 2/3 of the burrito for dinner/a snack so the $13 price tag was easily worth it. Service: Upon first glance of the menu, I was pretty overwhelmed. I asked the lady taking my order for some guidance and without missing a beat she gave me three recommendations off the bat. And when I was still unsure of what to order she so kindly explained what the most popular items on the menu were. She was so patient and always had a smile on her face throughout my inquiries. It just warmed my heart seeing how much joy she got from her job.

Wonderful! Tamales available in the late afternoon!
    Renee D.

Called ahead to make sure they had tamales. Tis the season where most places run out before breakfast. I had gone to my go to place and I was too late. At 1pm they only had 4 and I needed a dozen more! Tortas Mexico has great Yelps so I trust my brethren here. With faith I was able to call in my order, find an empty parking spot on Union, hustled up Fair Oaks and all was ready. The jalapeño and cheese had a healthy kick of spice which I like. The sweet pineapple have a nice amber colored masa to tell they are different from the savory. I put them in a slow cooker with a little water to keep them hot to transport to a dinner party. Everyone wanted to know where the tamales came from! My only recommendation is a way to identify the assortment when taken out of the bags.... I mixed them up once played and thought the green dot was sweet... They were jalapeño! I thought the red dot was carnitas, those were the sweet ones... opps Someone got a mouth full of spicy when they were going for dessert opps! . 16 tamales, order of rice and beans, salsas included = $70 fed 8 people with a few left over.

Here are the problems: 1. $7 for Chips and Guacamole - a giant basket of mediocre chips - basically a tablespoon of guacamole. Sorry, that's a terrible value. 2. The tacos were good, but again, kind of a crap value at $3 a taco. 3. I also ordered a medium Diet Pepsi. I don't know the exact price, but I had just spent $27 with a tip for 4 tacos/chips and guacamole/and a drink, but they wouldn't give me a refill unless I spent another $1.11. It's not a lot of money, but come on! Food is decent/not amazing/service is fine/prices are high and not a good value. I don't think I will be dining here ever again.

This was not the case when we had our dining experience. We got the plate of chile relleno with a beef enchilada, the mole plate and a kids quesadilla with rice and beans. 1. The chile in the chile relleno was soooo tiny, the battered egg was big and fluffy which is why it looks big. The rice was crunchy and had pieces of overcooked rice. The beef on the enchilada was on top of the enchilada NOT inside and it tasted like boiled beef with no flavor! I put it to the side. The inside just had a bit of shredded marble cheese. So disappointed. The beans were ok, restaurant quality, canned flavored. 2. The mole was very sweet and although that's not a bad thing, it still didn't have any kind of authenticity in the flavor it was as though it was just packaged sauce dumped on the chicken. 3. The kids quesadilla has bellpeppers and onions inside! Which was not disclosed on the menu. My kid likes bellpeppers but not the green ones and not in her quesadillas... come on. I had to pick them off. Over all I'm glad I live far away from here because it was really bad quality food. The service was nice and attentive. The ambiance was empty and almost abandoned... and I even went on a weekend.

It really hits the spot when you're craving comforting, flavorful Mexican food. The chips are fresh, the salsa is good, and the menu has offerings that feel more authentic and varied than a lot of other places. I especially appreciate that they have Yucatán cuisine options, which you do not always see at every Mexican restaurant. I am also very fussy with mole and typically do not like it at all, but I actually really enjoy the mole from El Portal. It has been a real eye-opener for me and honestly inspired me to give mole another shot elsewhere. One thing to keep in mind: a lot of the combo plates are smothered in delicious red sauce and plenty of cheese, so if you are not a big cheese person, just be aware before ordering. The enchiladas are good, though sometimes they could use a little more sauce, as the tortillas can come out a bit dry. The margaritas are tasty, but they do feel a little small for the price (Roughly $16 for a 8oz glass?!) The staff are friendly, the vibe is nice, and overall the food is consistently good. The only other heads-up is that some of the tables and booths are pretty small, so it can feel a little cramped in the main dining room. Also, **make sure you get your parking validated**. This is important because if you do not, the parking lot can be extremely expensive. You can also look for street parking on Green Street. They were perfectly thin crispy non-salty and warm, paired with a nice salsa that seems house made but was a little too tomato/ketchupy but by no means bad.
