My boyfriend and I are both big sushi fans and have been to many different sushi joints. Toshi's has the best selection, quality, and pricing that we've found. (We've tried Kai Lana and can't understand the hype that surrounds them. Toshi's is far superior in our opinion. There's not a single roll that we've tried that we didn't like.) Their food was delicious...! I'm surprised this place doesn't get crowded (which is good because there is no wait time!). I ordered a baja role, a poke salad, and the fried avocado. OMG the FRIED AVOCADO is an amazing appetizer; for only $4-5, that's definitely a must! Will definitely be returning to try the other roles soon. read more

Toshi's Sushi 5735 El Camino Real, Atascadero CA What a wonderful surprise! Just when I was complaining to our friend and Mayor, Roberta Fonzi, that there were not enough good ethnic restaurants in our beloved Atascadero (sometimes called 'the drive-in capitol' of the Central Coast) we noticed that Toshi's was open on El Camino Real and tried it that night. Toshi's owner, John Jang, had the same-named restaurant in San Luis Obispo and opened in Atascadero about 4 months ago, their loss is our gain. We sat at the Sushi bar and John Jang served us numerous delights, producing fabulous and fresh Sushi bites after our discussion with him about what he would recommend on that particular evening. He respected our budget limits and recognized that we were happy to experience the pure stuff. He let us order 'Japanese style', only ordering the next item after savoring the previous one. We drank the house hot sake, which was excellent, but many other choices are available. We tested the kitchen by ordering shrimp tempura (asking for it crispy....which may not have been necessary). The tempura was heavenly, light, hot, crispy and with no oil seemingly clinging to it. Toshi's was excellent and we will return for more (as we do occasionally to the wonderful Goshi's in Paso Robles). The service from the waitresses and our Sushi chef could not have been better. The decor seemed very appropriate for a Japanese restaurant. Our only suggestions would be that Toshi's begin the custom of giving hot little towels to guests before they eat, and having some Japanese music to hear or see on the HDTV (instead of sports......but that's probably asking for too much!). We have been eating Japanese food for over 45 years in California, the East Coast and in Japan. We look for freshness, good value and as little 'Americanization' and distortion of the original Japanese cuisine and style as is possible. We will continue to try new restaurants in Atascadero with high hopes. read more

My husband & I have been eating at Toshi's's since John opened years ago & was the head sushi chef. Sadly John passed, we missed his oldies music & great smile. We stayed away for a while & decided to go back. Robert was now the head sushi chef (we always eat at the sushi bar) and he was great. Very polite, wonderful customer service, personable & made great sashimi & rolls. Recently, for whatever reason, there was a new sushi chef, John. He got our order wrong twice, we were understanding. Then I ordered a kitchen item for my sister in law who was visiting from out of state. John rudely informed me that this was the sushi bar & would not take my order. I've enjoyed sushi for 30 years now, I do understand sushi bar protocol. This is ATASCADERO, not New York City nor a very metropolitan area. Robert & John have always gladly taken my order of any item from the kitchen in the past. The rudeness was not necessary. We will return, but will only be customers at the sushi bar as Roberts customers. John would be sadly appalled. read more

This place was me and my wifes favorite place to go untill the owner passed away. After that day toshi's went down hill fast, the rolls got smaller, prices got higher, and they stoped doing their free roll punch cards. If you want my advice go to crazy sushi fever. Rolls are bigger ya you pay about the same but service is better same with the food. read more

Used to be a regular here, but quit coming last year when some of my favorite rolls were being made differently. Decided to try it again rather than fight the fair traffic in Paso, and I am so glad I did. There was a different Sushi chef, and is he Good! I had one of the special rolls...Dancing with Fire roll...I was blown away. So good. The raw oysters were fresh, and the other roll I had, one of my old standbys, was excellent. I am back! read more

We don't go anywhere else for sushi. Prices and selection can't be beat. If you don't know what to try, sit at the sushi bar and let them know what you like. If sushi's not your thing, they have really good cooked options like teriyaki and noodles. Fish is always super fresh, staff is friendly and on top of things(attentive). We eat here at least twice a month, we'd go more often if we could. Love this place. read more

Quality of fish was good and rice was decent. We all know that the quality of the sushi rice needs to be just as good or better than the fish for it to be great sushi, right?? ; ) I had ordered takeout and ordered the Nigiri Deluxe Sushi Combo. Besides it taking soooo long to get my food, the food was good. I got some miso soup and salad with my meal. Miso soup was just ok but the salad dressing was pretty good. I moved to the central coast about a month ago from a very small fishing town in the pacific northwest. I am very spoiled when it comes to fresh seafood, good sushi, and great service. I have tried about a dozen sushi spots in SLO county, searching for my "Sushi Place". I finally found it!!!!! I always start slow and order a few individual pieces to get a taste for freshness and quality. It was all amazing. I am not usually a big sake drinker, and so I always ask for input from the waitstaff. My waitress Melissa, was very patient and helpful. She told me her favorites, and the Chefs. I had the Unagi (Eel) and the Hamachi (yellowtail) to start. Awesome! I then described what I am fond of to my waitress and she pointed me towards the "Neptune Roll", which turned out to be an assortment of different fish (spicy), on the inside, with Hamachi on the outside. This place kicks out good sushi for a reasonable price. That being said, it's not "slap your mama good", but definitely worth the price. I'd give it 4 stars, however the last three times I've visited I have waited a long time for our order. We're talking over an hour. I'd like to think I just went at a busy time.....but three in a row? So, if your above a beer budget and below a champagne budget, and have time to sit, this is the place. Talk about a skimpy meal! In a bento box, I got about 5 pieces of lettuce counting as my "salad", and no sauce on my chicken. The sunomono salad o got had no flavor, and the Blushing Dragon roll was not even made the way it says on the menu. We went in with low expectations, and were very pleasantly surprised. The spicy tuna roll was actually spicy, not a mayo-blend. It was good! My husband had the Poki Bowl, which apparently is different every day at the chef's discretion depending on what is fresh. It was generously sized and very tasty! Unfortunately YELP requires me to at least give them one star. Absolutely terrible. The red headed waitress girl, whose name I did not catch, was completely rude and incompetent. Every time we requested something she would leave with an attitude and return with something opposite of what we asked for. Majority of the staff were young white girls with inappropriately messy, died hair and tattoos. When my family ordered a side of ginger for their sushi, the waitress rolled her eyes. The Chef was absolutely rude as well and very unprofessional. When asked if they put green onions in their California rolls (because the last sushi place we went to did) the waitress rolled their eyes again and said no and then we heard her tell the chef that in a mocking manner and he laughed like we were dumb and told the other chef, who chimed in some sassy remark. The food was ok for the most part, regardless of the avocado in the California Rolls which was BROWN and tasted rotten. If you like refills, then I suggest you do not visit this business. Furthermore, we had paid the bill, finished eating, and the table was cleared, when they brought out a raw fish dish my father had ordered. He forgot about it because it came way too late and when he said he no longer wanted it they gave us mean looks and gossiped about it for the remainder of the time we were there. Short version: I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for good customer service and excellent quality food, or anyone who asks questions; because you will be mocked. read more
