I first visited Tostadas last May for dinner with some friends. They had vegetarian tostadas on the menu made with soyrizo that could be made vegan without cheese and sour cream. Very good tostadas! This time over a year later the menu has been updated with a couple more vegetarian/vegan options. One option being vegan Birria tacos. If you are fully vegan and do not eat cheese, make sure to ask for no cheese on these tacos. The menu says "vegan birria tacos" but it also says "melted cheese" in the description. My husband being vegetarian ordered them with the cheese and it was not dairy free cheese. I ordered them without the cheese and they were perfect. It was 23$ for 3 tacos and + and extra 5$ for a side of rice and beans. I didn't mind the price point because the tacos really were worth it. I will go back for the birria tacos and the wonderful spicy sauce they serve with them. read more

Came here with my boyfriend for Sunday dinner. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the ambiance is a mix of restaurant and club. The music is pretty loud but with just the two of us, we had no problem carrying on a conversation. We ordered the chicken and shrimp tacos with the sides of rice and beans. I also got their mango Margherita. The shrimp tacos were delicious and some of the largest tacos I've ever received at a restaurant. 6/5. This place is a hidden gem downtown San Jose! Was my first time here and learned they also have other locations. It's a divey rustic Mexican restaurant that serves Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and drinks. All the food was spectacular and I loved the tacos and the drink was delicious with watermelon pure! The ambience is quite loud but that is expected with all the chatter, music and fun environment. You can definitely tell there are regulars who come here for take out and dine in. I came to tostadas for brunch yesterday. Huge mistake!! I kept seeing it on Instagram and it looked good. Then I read the reviews so I was excited to eat here. It was a huge disappointment!!!! I put my name on the waitlist through Yelp which was super convenient. I had to wait a little bit for a table. The hostess was a super sweet girl. She recommended the Chilaquiles verde . She said it was very popular. So that's what we ordered. Also ordered a super michelada & some other drink . Food came out shortly after we ordered. It was small I split it with my man and that was another mistake because I left hungry . I did not like this dish at all !!! Flavor was very underwhelming. There was not very much sauce so the Chilaquiles Was dry. And I thought the sauce tasted like it came from a can . Almost bitter tasting. Chilaquiles had chorizo supposedly I can tell you there was not very much . Barely noticed it. Beans did not have much flavor. The drinks we're just ok . The restaurant was super packed and loud. First to start off, the food here is pretty good hence why it even has stars. Now, let me explain why it ONLY has two stars. Service is okay. They check on you every so often but sometimes you do feel forgotten and have to flag someone down. You can get a table pretty fast or put your name down so that's always a good thing. Now, when you order food, stuff always comes at different times. The portions got smaller and the way they serve the food got worse than before. I ordered a carnitas skillet and it was super dry, they gave me little meat and the potatoes are different than before. They used to be big chunky potatoes, now they look like a hash. Also, they don't inform you but when you order a soda, it's in a can or bottle so there is no refills and a bottle soda is $6 which is insane. They have made many changes here and none of it was communicated to the customer. Kind of a bummer. One huge thing they took away was the bottomless mimosas in on weekdays. They used to be $10 for all you can drink from open to noon which was such a deal! Now they took off bottomless all together! (At least that's what our server told us) other places have it for more expensive but not having it at all is kind of a bummer. From seeing all the reviews, pictures and menu, we were ecstatic to try it out since everything looked delicious. We came in the afternoon on 4th of July and put our names on the waitlist. We waited over 30 minutes before we were seated. Service was good enough, it took a bit of time to get the attention of our servers for ordering. We got the birria tacos as well as the birria burger. The birria looks the most popular here so we had to try the different forms of them. The ambiance fits better for night time alcohol + food vs afternoon eating time. Definitely worth the hype, we came on a Sat a little before lunch time. We were seated quickly - there was a steady amount of people leaving and coming. What was nice is they seated us even without our full party being there. Waitress was nice, she let us know kitchen was behind and so we ordered some starters and our entrees at same time. Everything was so good but my favorite was the tre leches French toast and the Elote. Drinks were very beautiful, tasty and strong. The interior set up was a little crowded but I didn't mind so I can see what other people ordered. The menu was huge. Came here on a Thursday at 7 and it was so crowded! The yelp page said the waitlist was less than 5 min long but that clearly wasn't true. I came here with a group of 6 on a Saturday night. I thought this restaurant was bigger, but it's actually petty small. It was packed with a bunch of people waiting outside for a table. It's like a cross between a club and a restaurant, but with children included. Idk. It was loud with music AND people. It's not really my scene. I just came for the food. The tostadas were huge. Stacked with chicken and fresh lettuce/tomato. I had so much on top that I scraped it off and put it on the other tostada shell. We also ordered 2 rounds of shots. I liked it, but it was way too spicy and burned my throat (another sign I'm getting OLD). I can't drink like I used to. I got tipsy after a shot and a half. This place is good, and I feel like I got my money's worth. I just don't like the club vibe, people yelling CHUG CHUG CHUG, and eating with small children (I think it's weird to have kids sit very close to the bar) while I'm trying to eat. What an amazing brunch this place has to offer, today we had the veggie skillet with scrambled eggs. It's the perfect mixture of veggies, it comes with tomatoes, spinach, bell pepper, onions, potatoes, and mushrooms. It's so tasty it comes with toast or tortillas. The California Benedict, it was cooked to perfection, the toast it come with is amazing. The potatoes with bell peppers and onions make it even better. Plain pancakes, the server brought us a side of strawberries and a side of whipped cream. It honestly completed our meal. The pancakes are fluffy and not overly sweet. The café de olla is perfect, you don't need to add anymore sugar or creamer at all. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is the service, the server could be a little nicer. Maybe smile a little, but I do understand that it's busy there. The food makes up for the lack of service. The music is a little loud but it's decent music that's playing. The time limit is an hour so I circled the block and found regular non metered parking by some houses near SJSU. They also have a couple of outdoor tables. We were promptly greeted by their host and brought waters right away without even having to ask. The waiters were all on top of it! We were checked on many times and not in an annoying way. They have a QR code to scan for their online menu. I ordered their vegan tostadas with a side of fries and a michelada. $5 miches?! Sign me up! My friends ordered the birria tacos and their happy hour nachos. The vegan tostadas were 100!! Their soyrizo was so good and wow their orange sauce kicks! It's pretty spicy. I like that their vegetarian options are not just basic veggies and rice and beans. The steak fries were a pleasant surprise. Yum! My friends report their birria tacos were delicious! I had visited the San Carlos location before, but last night was my first time trying out the downtown Tostadas. Joining Yelp Waitlist from home was extremely convenient, and our party of 4 was seated about 30 minutes after joining (on a Saturday evening). Compared to San Carlos, the space was smaller but the vibe was very similar - loud music, wall murals, etc. The only difference was the dimmer lighting, which I appreciated. Our server Herick was fun and energetic and we started off with drinks - I got a classic Margarita and my friends got the Pineapple Mango Margarita, Guava Margarita, and a Pacifico. I also ended up ordering a Mojito later on, but all the drinks were a bit too sweet/syrupy - surprising because I never felt this way at the other location. However, they were also strong! For food, we got an order of Guacamole to share and I chose the Shrimp Tacos. These were fantastic - tasty shrimp and great flavor overall. I loved the sauce on it too, which had a slight kick to it. My friends all loved their food, including the Pacific Catch Tostada, Asada Burrito, and Grilled Chicken Burrito Bowl. Had to get on the waitlist via Yelp App. Waitlist didn't matter too much because it was quoting a wait time of 20-30 minutes but ended up to be longer than that. It's fine...I get it, it was on a Friday evening afterall. So we get inside this small cramped restaurant. Waitress introduced herself and told us she'll bring us some waters. Had to follow up multiple times due to the kitchen not washing the water cups fast enough. Throughout dinner, service was spotty. Had to ask a few times for our drinks, I got the feeling she could care less about our table. Whoever said chips & salsa was complimentary just a few months ago is no longer true. Started off with that and sadly, this was the best part of the meal. So we ordered shrimp tacos (one order comes with 3) and it comes with rice & beans and the birria tostadas. It was disgusting. She put us on a waiting list but when we got there..there was availability for outdoor dining which i thought was nice right in the middle of downtown SJ. The experience I had was lackluster...Although I do enjoy music at restaurants, I had trouble talking over the music when placing my order and when chatting with my partner. Not only the ambiance, but also the food was meh. The shells were a little on the chewy side, and not crispy as I would have liked it. Birria was dry and not as juicy as some of the other places I've tried. The rice and beans were plain and a confusing addition to the tacos for lack of toppings. Getting birria topped on the rice plate would have been nice. Overall, I think I'll still be visiting Tacos el Noa Noa instead when I have a craving for birrias. Pros: Spacious indoor seatings.
