First, the good: the quality of the nigiri pieces is good (B+). Size is average at best (or slightly on the small side of average). Unfortunately prices are relatively high. The biggest downside was the small size of the rolls. I got a spider roll and it was probably the smallest spider roll I ever saw (the pieces were about half of a typical size). The quality of the rolls was marginal (C at best) but the small size really detracts. Also, I got about 3 little pieces of pickled ginger. A disappointing meal overall. read more

Updating my review. My husband and I came back for lunch. The service this time around was excellent. Our server was very knowledge about my allergies. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and didn't realize it came with edamame and had already ordered an appetizer of edamame. She had no problem taking the appetizer one off the bill. Honestly, it was a great experience. We went during happy hour (highly recommend!). We were kindly greeted by the waitstaff and sat almost immediately. We did the 3 for 33, with another appetizer, just so we could taste around. The appetizers we ordered were the crispy rice bites and the calamari. The crispy rice bites were definitely better than the calamari, but both were still very good.what I loved the most is that the bites played very well to the variety of textures, like the soft salmon, paired with the fresh jalapeño, then the crispy rice. It was all great. The best part of the meal by far was the sushi (which is what we hoped). We were blown away by the presentation, quality, and taste of both of the rolls. If you like a great vibe and great sushi that is all you can eat at a great price then this is a spot you have to try. My favorite roll is the trump roll. I also love their mackerel nigiri and yellowtail nigiri. Don't skip the edamame or their miso soup to start as it is delicious. Sake bombs and banter with the sushi chefs is always a good time. I really want to like this place, but it's getting more difficult with each visit. Rolls are decent, but prices just keep going up up up, which is why you'll notice they keep getting new menus that include the higher prices. Lunch for two was $75. That's insane. Want to pay with card? Be prepared for your waiter/waitress to hold the card machine and literally watch while you type in the tip amount. One of my favorite AYCE sushi spots in Arizona! There weren't that many AYCE sushi spots in Arizona so I was so stoked when I came across Trapper's and it's actually reasonably priced and good! Parking isn't an issue since they have their own parking lot Service is ok, not too attentive but they are friendly Pricing is reasonable. Lunch price for the regular menu is $22.95/person (11am-3pm daily) and dinner price for the upgraded menu ($32.95/person 11am-8:30pm daily). The regular menu has a good variety of baked and raw sushi (20+ options) and the upgraded menu includes the items on the regular menu as well as nigiri, long, and premium rolls. It takes awhile to get your dish after you place it especially on the weekends because it gets pretty packed since you're only allowed to sit at the sushi bar! Sushi is super fresh and so delicious! We come to this place often for their all you can eat sushi! You have to sit at the bar in order to enjoy the AYCE sushi (there's about 10 seats). The AYCE menu also includes their appetizers which I highly recommend the trapper bites and gyoza. The sushi chefs are always kind and will make any modifications you would like. This last time we went, I did feel our rolls had too much rice and not as much filling. Either way, we will continue to go back! I've been coming here since this restaurant opened. For years I've been reocmmending it as a solid sushi spot in the west valley. The last two times, very blah. After today, I'm now on the search. All the staff is new in the last visits I've come. Even new sushi chefs. The service. Attrocious and I'm upset now. I told the girl I just needed two more minute to order, and waited over nearly 15 minutes. At around the 10 minute mark, I raised my hand and asked for attention from the two waitresses in the far end just talking it up. I raised my hand and all the staff stopped and stared at me as I asked for assistance. They all went right back to talking and ignored us again. As in stood up and went to close my menu, my waitress finally came out running and said "are you ready to order?......" The sushi was great! The service is blah. Yes lawd!! This spot was a find! Funny because we always visit the Ahpoki next door lol never thought to try here until one day. Minimal table service but they do offer seated dinning. Their sushi is fresh, just like Ahpoki they know what they doing with they bomb af seaweed salad. Restrooms and dinning room were both clean. Tried Trapper's for the All You Can Eat and while the price is in line with other AYCE spots, the flavor just didn't hit the mark. The fish quality was fine, but most of the rolls we tried lacked the bold, balanced flavors we're used to. Out of the six rolls we ordered, maybe one stood out. This place was a total letdown. The all-you-can-eat seating is only at the bar, which is uncomfortable, and they only let you order 6 pieces at a time. With a minimum 25-minute waits between rounds, it felt like forever. Service was slow and clearly understaffed. The chefs kept dropping ingredients, and the rice balls for the nigiri were huge--way too much rice and it's only available on the dinner menu ($30). It's been a year since I've been back to Trappers. I usually have great experience dining here. However, my visit today was not very good and I was not satisfied with the chef and their service. From what I saw, they had 2 chefs. One chef only made sushi and put it away for later usage. He did not once make any rolls for the customer. The other chef was the only one who made sushi rolls for customers and it was extremely slow. I only ordered 2 rolls ans several nigiri and it took almost 2 hours, no joke. The food was very good and I enjoyed it, but the chef service was terrible. Some new changes in this restaurant since my visit last year is that lunch is now $20 and dinner is $30, down from $36. They also add in eel (unagi) nigiri, which was awesome. I hope they add salmon roe nigiri some day and I also hope the service is faster the next time I visit. read more

We will never be back! We have been customers since the grand opening in Avondale, and took friends to the grand opening in Surprise. But these are not close to where we live, and there are many good Sushi restaurants much closer to home, so a visit to Trappers is a special occasion. My wife had an email offering buy two rolls and get two free, so we thought it worth the drive. The restaurant was 2/3 empty, but the hostess asked us to sit and wait for a table. We were finally seated, and asked for water to drink. When the hostess brought the water we told her we were ready to order, and we saw her tell the waitress. It was at least 15 minutes before the waitress came to our table. I was about to leave and get a Poke bowl a few doors down, but she showed up. We ordered and then we waited. In the meantime, a man who came in after us was seated at the counter for all you can eat. He was on his third roll before we even got our order in. We had told the hostess about the two and two e-mail, and she was fine with it but when we got the bill it was full price. We told our waitress, but she had to check with the manager to see if the offer was valid. When she came back with the correct bill it was like she and the manager were doing us a personal favor to honor their offer. There is good sushi much closer to home, so there will no longer be special occasions at Trappers. read more

We have been coming to here since they opened. Through the years it has become less and less enjoyable. The chefs are no longer engaging and fun. They talk mostly amongst themselves, on occasion they do ask if you want anything else. The food is ok but the wait to get appetizers from the kitchen is a long wait. Wait staff is ok often have to just have to snag a person to ask for items. The place was a little disheveled, AYCE counter had a smell to it after it was cleaned from previous guest, outside trim of glass countertop cooler was dirty, restroom was a mess.
